170: YouTube Trending is Biased, Crowder vs. Vox, and More

On episode 170 of the BSP I discuss a recent analysis done by Coffee Break regarding the bias shown on the YouTube Trending Page, and discuss a battle going on between Vox & Steven Crowder, what I think the true motives are, and what I think you should do with this information.   CLARIFICATION: I do not think my discussion on the second story was clear. To make sure what I said in the 2nd story is not misconstrued, I do not support the doxxing or harassment of individuals. I also think that if you label your self “x,y, or z”, and someone then calls you “x,y, or z”, that probably should not offend you or be labeled sexist, racist, or homophobic.   I also think that the move towards identitarianism is somewhat damaging. It puts people in groups, leading to a further sense of segregation and in some cases more animus towards one another. I believe that instead of thinking of people as “what boxes do they check on this list of physical/sexual traits”, we should view each person as the culmination of their actions and ideas.   Additionally, if you’re creating content for millions of people, there will inevitably be people who make fun of you and criticize you. That, unfortunately, comes with the territory, and the only way to stop this would be remove all ability to comment, which I think would be more damaging.   I hope that the harassment of Carlos Mazza stops, because harassment is awful, but I do not necessarily think that joking about someone is grounds for banning. If youtube decides that joking about someone is bannable, then no comedians, late night talk show hosts, or even politicians should be allowed on youtube because they have likely ALL done this.   Subscribe to the full audio podcast at http://www.bandrewsays.com   Twitter: @bandrewsays Ask Questions: AskBandrew@gmail.com Merch; https://teespring.com/stores/podcastage-store Discord: https://discord.gg/dXQUc7v Gear Used This Episode: Shure SM7b - https://geni.us/shuresm7b Universal Audio Arrow - https://geni.us/uaarrow Stedman PS101 - https://geni.us/ps101 Sony MDR7506 - https://geni.us/7506   00:00 - Intro 01:05 - The Truth Behind the YouTube Trending Tab * Coffee Break Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fDqBeXJ8Zx8 10:51 - Steven Crowder vs. Vox & The YouTutube Ban * YouTube Investigating Steven Crowder: https://www.theverge.com/2019/5/31/18647621/youtube-steven-crowder-bullying-harassment-twitter-vox-carlos-maza * Steven Crowder Video Response: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQbpbsY7qVQ 25:12 - Twitter Has 4 Person Live Streaming 25:30 - WYHTS: YouTube Never Promised a Living 27:55 - WYHTS: What happened to the first 8 Episodes of the BSP? 29:40 - WYHTS: Do you Use Speakpipe? 30:35 - Ask Bandrew 31:25 - Email 1 32:09 - XM8500 or SM48? 34:37 - Email 2 34:57 - Blue Encore 200 vs Samson Q2u 37:48 - Outro

SUMMARY The party enters the village of Starren and has some time to kill while they are waiting on the lift to come down and take them up into the city of Starrengeld. The have a run in with a member of the traveling company who they previously rented their now heavily damaged cart from. Hearing about what had happened to them Lydia, the mayor of the village, pulled them into the tavern for some drinks to tell them about Grimfang. They learn that Grimfang is a large gnoll that may or may not be a myth, however, his band of gnolls that occasionally attack people on the road are very real. Unfortunately, the damage being done hasn’t been enough for Port Norsal’s leadership to get heavily involved, and dwarves do not have enough forces to wipe them out. Rem goes to talk to the leader of the village guard, the Black Guard, and is offered a nice sum of money if they can track down Grimfang’s camp and return with any useful information. After sorting everything out in the village, the lift up to Starrengeld touches down and the party begins their slow climb up the mountain. Virtual Memories – season 4 episode 8 - The Slippery Animal "I'm always in the middle of a struggle with a short story. You'd think I'd have the hang of it by now. It's a slippery animal.'" Literary legend Bruce Jay Friedman joins the Virtual Memories Show for a fun conversation about his literary career, which encompasses six decades of short stories, novels, plays and Oscar®-nominated screenwriting. We talk about his newest projects, how both the writing and the sale of short stories have changed over the course of his career, and why he's happier in that form than the novel. Why was he successful in Hollywood when F. Scott Fitzgerald and Anthony Powell crapped out there? Listen in to find out! "Hollywood to me was fun. Like a boy being let loose in a candy store. I was offended when I'd get called in off the tennis court to write a few scenes. I can tell you: there is no one who had more fun than I did in Hollywood." We also talk about how stories begin, where he sees himself in the continuum of Jewish American writers, why Dustin Hoffman hates him, whether he's ever been tempted to write The Big Novel, why he's getting more Jewish as he gets older, why he prefers the Franco-Prussian war over other wars, and how to find the right kind of pistachio nuts. "I always feel guilty about being entertained. I feel like I should be reading Suetonius." Bonus: I rant about leaving my job and ask you for money! Enjoy the conversation! Then check out the archives for more great episodes!
