Today's episode features Part 1 of our October 30, 2025 webinar, "AI in Financial Services: Understanding the White House Action Plan – and What It Leaves Out." In this installment, a panel of leading experts breaks down the rapidly evolving role of artificial intelligence in financial services—from foundational concepts to the latest regulatory developments. Moderated by Alan Kaplinsky, Senior Counsel, founder and former longtime leader of Ballard Spahr's Consumer Financial Services Group, and Greg Szewczyk, chair of the firm's Privacy and Data Security Group, the discussion cuts through hype and uncertainty to provide clear, practical insights. Alan and Greg guide an energetic conversation about how AI has become a strategic priority for banks, credit unions, payments companies, and fintechs. Our panel includes: Charley Brown, leader of Ballard Spahr's technology and patents teams, who explains how institutions can protect and capitalize on AI-enabled technologies; Dean Ball, former White House senior advisor and one of the architects of the White House AI Action Plan, who provides a rare inside look at the policy landscape; Kristian Stout, Director of Innovation Policy at the International Center for Law and Economics, who examines the intersections of AI, regulation, and competition; and Charlie Bullock, Senior Research Fellow at the Institute for Law and AI, who outlines practical frameworks for responsible, compliant AI governance. Together, they unpack the complex patchwork of state, federal, and international rules now shaping AI deployment in financial services. The discussion highlights how automated decision-making laws, privacy requirements, and emerging definitions of "artificial intelligence" are forcing institutions to rethink compliance programs, manage risk differently, and anticipate new regulatory expectations. You'll also hear real-world examples of how organizations are grappling with these challenges in practice. This episode provides an essential foundation for understanding where AI and financial services intersect, and where the regulatory environment is headed. Be sure to tune in next Thursday for Part 2, where our experts delve even deeper into the future of AI, innovation, and legal risk in the financial sector. Consumer Finance Monitor is hosted by Alan Kaplinsky, Senior Counsel at Ballard Spahr and founder of the firm's Consumer Financial Services Group. We encourage listeners to subscribe on their preferred podcast platform for weekly insights into the consumer finance industry.

Next week the Cabinet is rumoured to discuss one of the most important documents this decade and one which could change the direction of travel when it comes to getting things built in this country. It's an action plan as opposed to a report on how to radically speed up infrastructure delivery and it will involve urgent legislation and quite a few noses out of joint if it's to be implemented. Seán O'Driscoll is the man who was one of the driving forces behind many of the recommendations which the government will consider used to run Glen Dimplex and now chairs UCC and the ESRI.
In this episode, we reflect on the importance of giving thanks to the Lord for all He has done in both the beautiful and difficult moments of life. We talk about how practicing gratitude can change our perspective of reality and helps us recognize where God has been present even in moments we do not understand. We also name the fears that can sometimes keep us from giving thanks and discuss how gratitude becomes an act of surrender that opens us to God's steady, faithful presence. As a gift to you, we end today's episode by doing Lectio Divina with Psalm 34 and invite you into a time of prayer with us. How did the Lord accompany me this year? What do I need to let go of as we transition into a new liturgical year? What parts of my life am I afraid to give thanks for? Discussion Questions: What has the Lord taught you in this season? What was surprising this past year? What challenges and joys did you experience this year? Where are you resistant to give thanks? Quote to Ponder: "Gratitude is at the center of a life of faith. It sounds too simple to be true, but isn't that the sign of all deep truth: so simple we're tempted to dismiss it, and so hard, it is exactly what God uses to change our hard lives." (Ann Voskamp) Scripture for Lectio: "I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul makes its boast in the Lord; let the humble hear and be glad. O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together. I sought the Lord, and he answered me, and delivered me from all my fears. Look to him, and be radiant; so your faces shall never be ashamed. This poor soul cried, and was heard by the Lord, and was saved from every trouble. The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and delivers them. O taste and see that the Lord is good; happy are those who take refuge in him." Leading shipping companies are joining forces to combat ocean plastic pollution through the launch of the Maritime Association for Clean Seas (MACS): a new industry alliance driving measurable reductions in plastic and operational waste at scale. Founded by Seven Clean Seas (SCS), an ocean impact organisation, MACS unites founding members including Berge Bulk, X-Press Feeders, and others from across the global maritime value chain. Clean Seas to tackle ocean plastic Our oceans underpin global trade and face mounting plastic challenges Oceans carry around 90% of global trade and provide livelihoods for more than 2 million seafarers worldwide. Yet they face unprecedented pressure, with 14 million tonnes of plastic entering and damaging marine ecosystems every year. While the maritime sector contributes only a small fraction of this pollution, even isolated cargo losses or poor waste handling on board or quayside can have serious consequences which could be prevented, especially with plastic pellets, films and light packaging. By advancing best practices, innovation, and collaboration across the value chain, the industry can play a pivotal role in reducing plastic leakage and protecting the very waters it relies on. A pivotal moment for maritime sustainability MACS builds on the IMO's established Plastic Marine Litter Action Plan and responds to the growing global sentiment for coordinated, industry-wide action on plastic pollution. As scrutiny around environmental and community impact intensifies, MACS creates a unified front for maritime players to reduce plastic use, share best practices, and inspire change across adjacent sectors with even larger plastic footprints. Collective action for measurable impact MACS builds on SCS' track record of tackling plastic pollution at its source. Operating in some of the world's most polluted coastal regions, SCS develops holistic certified recovery projects that not only recover ocean plastic but also deliver fair employment and community impact on the ground. The Association brings maritime leaders together to tackle two core objectives of ocean plastic recovery at scale and waste reduction across the maritime value chain, with the initial focus for 2026 on three key areas: Sustainable procurement and material use; Vessel waste measurement and reduction; And improved portside waste reception. These efforts align directly with the IMO's 2030 Action Plan. It also marks a key milestone in SCS' mission to recover 100,000,000 kilograms of plastic and improve 200,000 lives by 2030, proving how targeted collaboration can drive systemic change and inspire far-reaching environmental progress. "Seven Clean Seas has always believed in collective action as the most powerful lever for change," said Tom Peacock-Nazil, Founder & Chairman of MACS. "With MACS, we're providing the maritime industry with the tools it needs to make measurable progress against plastic pollution. Not in isolation, but together." Driving systemic change through collaboration Founding members Berge Bulk, Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement (BSM), X-Press Feeders, and Britoil Offshore Services represent a cross-section of the global maritime sector, from bulk carriers and ship management to offshore operations. Their participation reflects a shared commitment to operational excellence, environmental leadership, and data transparency. "At Berge Bulk, the oceans are at the heart of our business, so we have always felt an obligation to protect them and a responsibility to keep them clean," said Michael Blanding, Head of Sustainability & Communications. "Our long-standing work with SCS has already delivered tangible results, and through MACS, we're proud to help lead a united industry response that can achieve change at scale." Francis Goh, Chief Operating Officer of X-Press Feeders, added, "As a global shipping company, we recognise the responsibility we have to safeguard the oceans that sustain global trade. Our collaboration with S...

During an interview with the ‘Morning Report', Prime Minister Christopher Luxon confirmed that orders for the homeless in Auckland's CBD to move on were “definitely a consideration”. He later stated, that “Aucklanders don't feel safe going into the central city”, and both Central government and Auckland Council are considering how they can move homeless people out of the CBD ahead of summer. This follows previous reports that the Government was considering a rough sleeping ban for central Auckland. This news comes as Stats NZ released their annual unemployment figures this week. The results show that national unemployment has risen to a nine-year high at 5.3%, with the New Zealand youth taking most of the damage. For our weekly catchup with The Green Party, Wednesday Wire Max spoke to MP Ricardo Menendez March, to discuss the new unemployment figures released last week. Guest post by Orla Kelly, founder of Orla Kelly Publishing. You have a book inside you. It's a collection of your hard-won lessons, your unique perspective, your vision for the future. As a leader, you understand the power of a story to inspire change and build a legacy. Yet, that book remains unwritten. The document sits unopened, the ideas stay locked in your mind, and another year passes. As an independent publisher, I've seen this countless times. I work with coaches, founders, and experts who are brilliant at what they do - yet their book project lingers on the back burner. They build businesses, lead teams, and create impact daily, but when it comes to writing their book, something stalls. The truth is, this delay isn't about a lack of discipline or ambition. It's a complex mix of psychological, emotional, and practical hurdles that can stall even the most driven individuals. The Hidden Barriers to Writing Your Book Why do so many accomplished people put off this critical legacy project? The reasons are often deeply personal but universally understood. 1. The Weight of Perfectionism As a leader, your name is attached to quality. This drive for excellence, which is so valuable in business, can become a paralysing force in writing. You might feel that every sentence must be perfect, every idea groundbreaking. The fear isn't about writing a bad book; it's about producing something that doesn't live up to the legacy you've already built. 2. The Fear of Judgement Putting your ideas into the world is an act of vulnerability. What if people disagree? What if critics dismiss your life's work? This fear of being misunderstood can quietly stop even the most confident leader from starting. 3. The "Time" Illusion For busy professionals, "I don't have time" feels true. But procrastination is rarely about time and more about priority. The book becomes a "someday" project, overshadowed by immediate demands. 4. The Fog of Uncertainty Where do you begin? What's your message? How do you publish? The lack of a clear roadmap creates hesitation. When the path is unclear, standing still feels safer. Turning Procrastination into Progress Overcoming these barriers isn't about willpower - it's about clarity, structure, and support. Here's what consistently helps high-performing leaders make real progress: 1. Reframe the Goal Replace "write a bestseller" with "share my message." It lowers the stakes and reconnects you to purpose. Ask: Is it clear? Is it useful? Does it move someone forward? 2. Schedule Writing Sprints Momentum beats marathons. Block short, focused sessions and treat them like key meetings. 3. Start with a Mind Map Map your ideas before writing. It turns chaos into clarity and "writing" into "organising." 4. Speak Before You Write If typing feels stiff, talk it out. Recording your insights often captures your most natural, powerful voice. 5. Seek Trusted Support In my work with hundreds of aspiring authors, I've seen the breakthrough come when they stop trying to go it alone. This time of year is critical. As sales leaders map out their budgets for the new year, the conversation always centers on a core conflict: How to cut expenses and, simultaneously, motivate teams to hit larger quotas. What's the first line item to feel the squeeze? Training and development. It is often incorrectly labeled a 'want' and not a 'need.' We hear leaders say, "It can wait until next quarter," or, "Once we stabilize revenue, we'll invest in the team." This short-sighted thinking doesn't save money. Instead, it's costing organizations a significant, quantifiable amount of revenue and talent. When professional development is treated like a luxury, we undermine the foundational ability of our teams to perform consistently at a high level. Training is the Foundational Requirement for Peak Performance Sales leaders should consider peak performance in any high-stakes environment. In the military, or in elite professional sports, ongoing training is not a choice—it is a non-negotiable, daily priority. So why is it that, in Sales, we view continuous development as optional or too expensive? The simple truth is that lack of training is the most expensive mistake you can make. Think about the rate of technological change. Most of us have upgraded our cell phones in the last three to five years because the old ones simply couldn't keep up. The same principle applies to your sales team's skill set. If your representatives are still relying on techniques learned 5, 10, or 15 years ago, then they are operating at a competitive disadvantage. They will be outmaneuvered and outperformed by competitors who are strategically investing in modern sales frameworks every time. Henry Ford's famous quote still holds true: "The only thing worse than training employees and losing them is to not train them and keep them." If you believe training is expensive, you must take a moment to calculate the monumental loss of reps consistently missing their quotas. The True Cost of Inconsistency and Turnover Look at the numbers. Assume three of your representatives are consistently missing quota by just 20%. That deficit is lost revenue—but it also represents wasted leads, missed opportunities, and the corrosive ripple effect of deals that never even make it into your pipeline. The amount of potential revenue lost due to underperformance is often far greater than the entire annual budget you would allocate to comprehensive sales training. Action Plan for Sales Leaders & Managers To reverse this loss, you must treat coaching as a continuous operational requirement, not a perk. Calculate the 'Cost of Inaction' to Justify Budget: Reframe thinking of training as an expense and start focusing on the cost of the status quo. Calculate the annualized revenue loss from your bottom 20% of underperforming reps (e.g., missed quota * average deal size). Use that concrete number to justify and secure a budget for development, proving that not training is your biggest liability. Implement a Continuous Coaching Framework: Don't rely on annual training events. Transform your managers into daily coaches by mandating 30 minutes of structured, one-on-one coaching per week focused on skill development. This reinforcement is what locks in new behaviors and prevents the initial energy gained in training from fading. The Hidden Expense of Disengagement Talent turnover is another critical cost of lack of training that is often overlooked. A representative who feels unsupported, or who consistently misses quota because they don't have the necessary tools and coaching, is highly likely to seek opportunities elsewhere. The cost of recruiting, onboarding, and ramping a replacement—which includes the loss of established customer relationships and the disruption to team morale—significantly outweighs the expense of proactive investment. How to Take a Struggling Rep From Liability to Asset

This week on the Retirement Quick Tips Podcast, I'm talking about why I'm growing increasingly worried about the stock market - high stock valuations colliding with a recession is historically a recipe for steep losses - and it is looking more and more like we're moving in that direction. Today, let's talk about an action plan and how to make sure your portfolio is positioned well for both scenarios of continued growth, and a possible economic downturn and a bear market.

Local authorities are boosting their cyber-security systems with the official launch of Ireland's first tailored IT apprenticeship programme for county and city councils. Ten local authorities across Ireland have joined the initiative, which aims to equip staff with the skills and expertise to protect local government networks and data from cyber-attacks. The Cybersecurity Apprenticeship Programme, which allows employees to train while they work, was officially launched by Minister of State at the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Marian Harkin and Minister of State at the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, John Cummins in Dundalk, Co Louth. Representatives from the Local Government Management Agency (LGMA), which has collaborated with FIT (Fastrack into Information Technology) to deliver the programme, also attended the launch. The scheme features a 70:30 split between workplace learning and off-the-job training. This means the participants are applying the most up-to-date theoretical knowledge to IT practice in local authorities. When completed, the programme will equip participants with the skills and knowledge to work in cybersecurity roles within the local government sector, and they will receive an Advanced Certificate in Cybersecurity (NFQ Level 6). The first cohort of 14 participants began in June, serving their apprenticeships in 10 local authorities and the LGMA. Minister Harkin said the programme opens doors for new talent but also empowers local government's existing workforce. "This apprenticeship is a powerful example of how targeted education and training can support the evolving needs of our public sector, "By investing in both new talent and upskilling existing staff, we are not only strengthening cyber resilience within local government, but also building a future-ready workforce equipped to meet the challenges of a digital society. In addition, this programme supports a number of Government priorities, including growing the number of apprentices within the Public Service." Minister Cummins added: "The Government is committed to expanding apprenticeship and traineeship numbers on a sectoral basis alongside established primary recruitment processes. Today marks an important step in building cyber resilience within local government. "As global vulnerabilities continue to rise in threatening the security of our IT systems, this pioneering programme showcases the dedication of public servants in safeguarding our communities through stronger cyber resilience. This programme demonstrates the commitment of the local government sector to achieve the targets set out in the Public Service Apprenticeship Plan to provide programmes that offer a route to qualifications and careers in a range of diverse areas and to establish the sector as an employer of choice by attracting, retaining and developing its staff." Training takes place online and in person in the Advanced Manufacturing Training Centre of Excellence in Dundalk, where the launch took place. This initiative supports key goals outlined in the Local Government Digital and ICT Strategy 2030 and the Action Plan for Apprenticeship 2021-2025, contributing to the development of a skilled digital workforce in the local government sector. The training programme is being delivered by FIT. CEO Peter Davitt said: "We are proud to launch Ireland's first workforce development apprenticeship for local government. "By embracing tech apprenticeships, this model proactively addresses the challenge of skills obsolescence in today's fast-evolving digital landscape, ensuring that public sector digital services remain robust, secure, and future-ready for the benefit of communities nationwide." Chief Executive Officer of the LGMA, Pauline Mulligan added: "Upskilling current local authority employees is central to our digital transformation strategy, ensuring that they are equipped with the expertise needed to safeguard ...

In this Episode: This podcast episode of the "Achieve Results Now podcast" focuses on the importance of cultivating peace and stability not as an end goal, but as a crucial mindset for effective achievers and leaders. The hosts, Mark Cardone and Theron Feidt, dispel the misconception that one cannot be both highly successful and peaceful, arguing that peace enhances leadership and achievement. The goal is to provide listeners with actionable steps to increase their mental "margin" and handle unexpected daily events without losing their stability. Core Theme: Peace as a Tool for Achievement The hosts stress that peaceful people are more effective leaders because their stability builds trust. They view peace not as an "on/off switch," but as a dial that can be adjusted. Establishing a peaceful mindset helps listeners be more effective and happier, enabling them to deal with the unexpected rather than constantly being in a "reaction zone." 3 Action Steps for Living with More Peace 1. Establish a No-Reaction Zone in the Morning Own your morning: Dedicate the first part of your day (ideally an hour but start with 15–30 minutes) to yourself before engaging with external demands. Avoid immediate stress: Do not check email, text messages, or social media during this time. Focus on fulfillment and direction: Use the time for positive activities like: Reviewing and physically rewriting your top goals. Practicing gratitude. Taking a quick walk to get fresh air and sunlight. Build in flexibility: Avoid creating an "end-to-end" morning schedule that easily crumbles. View this time as flexible and enjoyable, not as another stressful "to-do" item. 2. Implement the Pause and Ask Rule This step is about creating space between a trigger and your response to maintain control over your emotional state. Take a quick breath and pause when hit with an external challenge (e.g., traffic, an inconsiderate person, an employee with a problem). Ask yourself critical questions: "Is this worth my peace?" and "Is this worth me getting upset about?" Recognize the difference between intention and action: Many issues are due to thoughtlessness, not malicious intent. Choose your response: By pausing, you prevent your ego from taking control, allowing you to choose a peaceful, measured response rather than reacting automatically, especially in trivial matters like traffic or minor arguments. 3. Schedule Unscheduled Time This is a time management technique to create vital "margin" in your day, preventing you from constantly rushing. Build buffer time into your schedule: If a task or commute takes 15 minutes, schedule 30 minutes. Actively block out time: Use your calendar to schedule these buffers as "run over time," "catch up time," or "flex time." Use the time wisely: If the time isn't needed for recovery, plan to use it for constructive, peaceful activities like reading a book, listening to educational content, or tackling a task for the next day. This prevents you from defaulting to social media scrolling and further enhances your peace. Federal Tech Podcast: Listen and learn how successful companies get federal contracts
Connect to John Gilroy on LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/john-gilroy/ Want to listen to other episodes? www.Federaltechpodcast.com The impact of AI in software development in the federal government is so pervasive that, in July of 2025, the President of the United States released a White House AI Action Plan. Today, we sat down with Bob Stevens from GitLab to put this development into perspective, examine some use cases, and suggest methods that federal agencies can use to prepare for this technological shift. What precipitated the initiative is the recognition that change is occurring so rapidly in the world of software development that the federal government must adapt more quickly than in the past, or it will be vulnerable to cyberattacks. Stevens notes that the federal government has been targeting modernization, producing software faster, and being more efficient, for a decade. AI will help them get there, with some possible cost reduction. For example, in the past, a vulnerability may have taken weeks to discover. Utilizing AI allows federal software developers to reduce that discovery to minutes. That ties in with one essential element in the White House initiative: security. In fact, one of the pillars of the Action Plan is titled “Promoting Secure-by-Design AI Technologies and Applications.” Stevens has been involved in federal software development for decades and thinks that a platform approach best serves the essential objectives of this Action Plan. The conversation concludes with the potential for AI to streamline government processes and improve operational efficiency. If you are interested in learning more about the economics of this approach, you can download The Economics of Software Innovations: $750 billion Opportunity at a Crossroads.
