Today on another encore edition of the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking to illustrator & cartoonist Drew Friedman, son of the great writer, screenwriter and author, Bruce Jay Friedman. Known for his pop culture writing, including screenplays like Stir Crazy with Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor and Doctor Detroit, Bruce Jay was part of the well-heeled Manhattan literary, pop culture and social scene, with his own table at the once-fashionable & paparazzi friendly Elaine's restaurant in the 70s and 80s. Bruce Jay Friendman was also a novelist with books like The Lonely Guy (which became a film with Charles Grodin and Steve Martin) & as well as a playwright for productions like Scuba Duba &Steambath which became a PBS production in 1973. This literati scene rubbed off on Drew who was always obsessed with drawing and cartoons from a very early age. This passion led to a career as a cartoonist for magazines like The New Yorker, National Lampoon, Spy, Newsweek and many more. In turn, this led to caricature books & illustrations with titles like Old Jewish Comedians, Maverix and Lunatix: Icons of underground Comics and All The Presidents. Drew Friedman became famous for his lifelike if sometimes slightly demented images of B-movie actor Tor Johnson, public access television host Joe Franklin, comedian Ernie Kovacs (ahem) and Groucho Marx and many more. The aptly named Drew Friedman is our guest this week because this is the Rarified Heir Podcast and everyone has a story. This one is fascinating. Take a listen.
Hey, Regular Friends! If you're feeling lonely this Friday, welcome to the club. It's another edition of Lonely Guy Friday. This week, we're diving into the unexpected wisdom of Sixto Rodriguez from Searching for Sugarman—how his lyrics AND life story can teach us more than we realize. Kev unpacks his experiences with ketamine and psilocybin therapy—why some people turn to them for healing, how they compare, and what surprising revelations they brought (including a bizarre visit from Charles Manson?!). How some people substitute mushrooms for a self-guided healing journey and how they do it effectively. How animals send us messages. How there may be a fine line between Serial Killer and Superstar - Despot and Deity. May the learning and healing continue. Talk shawtly. Disclaimer: This is just one person's experience, not an endorsement for or against these therapies. Any treatment involving ketamine, psilocybin, or mushrooms should be distributed and guided by a professional, if at all. -- HEAL SQUAD SOCIALS IG: https://www.instagram.com/healsquad/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@healsquadxmaria HEAL SQUAD RESOURCES: Heal Squad Website: https://www.healsquad.com/ Maria Menounos Website: https://www.mariamenounos.com My Curated Macy's Page: Shop My Macy's Storefront AquaTru: https://aquatruwater.com/ code: HEALSQUAD AirDoctor: https://airdoctorpro.com/ code: HEALSQUAD Prenuvo: Prenuvo.com/MARIA for $300 off Sleep Number: https://www.sleepnumber.com/ ABOUT MARIA MENOUNOS: Emmy Award-winning journalist, TV personality, actress, 2x NYT best-selling author, former pro-wrestler and brain tumor survivor, Maria Menounos' passion is to see others heal and to get better in all areas of life. It's another edition of Lonely Guy Friday, all you RGF fans. Why you should revisit Christopher Reeves' Superman, why we've seen enough of Batman and Joker, and why it's time for a new Superman. How the cold plunge is healthy but expensive and painful, and how to cold plunge at home in a far less painful way. How a 10 dollar hot water bottle at CVS or any pharmacy can soothe anxiety or a broken heart. How that same 10 dollar hot water bottle and some castor oil could ease your gut issues. How daily morning mass or service could be the thing to get your days and schedule on track. What empty nesters can do to heal and ascend. How your codependence is keeping you in prison and the irony of how the narcissist in you can free your codependent self (but also land you right back while adding time to your sentence). The tie between codependency and addiction. How trauma makes the artist, but also destroys them (as we see in Hollywood all the time). How Joan Rivers visited Kev in a dream, what she said and how I interpreted it - and so can you for your dreams. We're celebrating 100 episodes this week by returning to not one but two recurring themes from nearly two years of the podcast: the filmography of Steve Martin and the belief that February belongs to romance -- two concepts that combine decently well with some magical realism in our movie of the week, an absurdist take on life and love in Los Angeles that still feels like a cutting send-up of the city more than 30 years later. It's 1991's L.A. Story, directed by Mick Jackson, written by Steve Martin, and starring Martin, Victoria Tennant, Richard E. Grant, Marilu Henner, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kevin Pollak, Patrick Stewart, Frances Fisher, Iman, Larry Miller, Woody Harrelson, Rick Moranis and John Lithgow. So tonally cartoonish that it feels Martin is moments away from being crushed by a grand piano and popping out the top of it unscathed at any moment, that silliness conceals an earnest goodness about love, the universe, and everything finding a way to work out as it should. Are these beliefs that go hand-in-hand with the movie's wacky exterior, or does the film find itself at odds with itself? Find out, as we dive into a movie Hayley recently picked up on VHS. Plus: J Mo's still sore from having climbed into the wrestling ring over the weekend! If you'd like to watch the movie before listening along to our discussion, L.A. Story is currently streaming for free on the CTV app in Canada at the time of publication. Other works discussed in this episode include the video games Mario & Luigi: Brothership and Balatro, as well as TMNT: Mutant Mayhem, Only The Brave, 24, The Departed, The Nice Guys, Mission: Impossible - Fallout, Jurassic Park, the JJ Abrams Star Trek trilogy, the Disney Star Wars sequel trilogy, A Goofy Movie, Bowfinger, The Lonely Guy, Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid, Cheaper By The Dozen, The Tooth Fairy and They Came Together. Feb2ary Is For Lovers continues next week as we run it back for another 100 episodes beginning with Nicolas Cage and Cher in 1987's Moonstruck, which may be the most readily available film we've ever covered as it's currently streaming on Amazon Prime, Crave, Starz, Criterion Channel, Tubi and Hoopla as we release this. Thank you so much for listening for 100 episodes, or however long you've been on the ride. We love you, and see you at the movies!!
How for decades LA has been a reactive city and how the fires are no exception - AND nothing new. How we are reactive in our own daily lives and the reminder to be proactive. How we trip over the same extension cords, everyday, and the need for vigilance against that. How charities use donations for administrative costs and the best place and means to donate. The first thing most people lament about losing during disasters and this simple app and practice to avoid the loss. Haven't practiced any new year's resolutions or better haven't even had time to come up with any? How many of us are stuck right now and why we shouldn't feel bad. The ongoing tragedy of the LA fires. The state of Kelsey and Natasha during the fires. The art of practicing proactivity in all areas of life. The definition, instruction and necessary application of 1% marketing in your lives. The panic attack Mercedes Mone had before her Tokyo Dome match in Japan. Why being sick puts you in first position and why if it doesn't you'll remain sick or worse. What is ‘covert narcissism' and why the practice gives one carte blanche. It's another snowy Lonely Guy Friday on Regular Guy Friday, where we reflect on love, resilience, and the hilarity of life's unexpected moments. From finding her at a shelter on Christmas Eve Eve to navigating her health challenges with creativity and commitment, this tale reminds us of the true spirit of the season. Keven also shares his reflections on the fast pace of the holidays, the importance of celebrating our wins, and why taking moments to pause and reflect can transform our outlook for the new year. Welcome back, KWEENS!! Kev is also back and rocking this ep solo with a "Lonely Guy Friday" and in classic Keven fashion, it's filled with with reflections, laughs, and real takes. He gives a life update on the CT house and shares the power of knowing when to stand up for yourself—even when it feels uncomfortable. He also gets into how some lessons are only learned the hard way and why sometimes, showing your "fangs" is necessary. Whether you're handling the chaos of daily life, setting boundaries, or navigating friendships that might clash with personal/political beliefs, Kev helps us through it all. Bye Bs!! Healers & Heal-Liners: Setting boundaries and being firm with others is essential, even if it feels uncomfortable or against the grain. Tough experiences often provide the most impactful lessons. It's okay to be assertive when necessary. Sometimes showing strength is the best way to keep your peace and be true to yourself. Hold onto the simple joys, especially when life gets chaotic. This week, like the sand-people of Arrakis and Beetlejuice audiences before us, we're afraid of worms (worms!) as guest Rachel Hadaway (of Rachel's Chart Chat on The People Are The Enemy) goes for a steeply inclined stroll with us to breathe the mountain air in beautiful Nelson, Washington as circle back to the coziness of the Steve Martin rom-com. It's 1987's Roxanne, directed by Fred Schepisi, written by Steve Martin, and starring Martin opposite Daryl Hannah, Shelley Duvall, Rick Rossovich, John Kapelos, Fred Willard, Michael J. Pollard, Damon Wayans and of course Nelson, British Columbia, which almost played itself! A landmark 80s film for Canadians seeing their country onscreen, north of the border it seems more beloved for its locations than its clever reworking of Cyrano de Bergerac for a modern context. But this is a funny movie with a romance that works, brought to us from the dusty DVR box of a long-time booster of our show who we were happy to finally bring on! Plus: As we put Halloween season behind us, Justin goes deep on the truly terrible Blade: Trinity. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening along, Roxanne is not currently available to stream in Canada, but can be found on Amazon Prime in America at the time of publication. Other works referenced on this episode include Saturday Night, Challengers, Wicked, Blade, Blade II, Hellboy II: The Golden Army, The Witches of Eastwick, Practical Magic, V/H/S/94, So I Married An Axe Murderer, A Serious Man, The Creature From The Black Lagoon, The Reality Show Show, 8 Mile, The Lonely Guy, Review, Police Academy, The Muppet Babies, Set It Up, and Looney Tunes among others. We'll be back next week as No-Theme-ber continues... with what? We don't actually know yet. So keep it locked here to find out. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!
It's a melancholy Lonely Guy Friday as one of Maria and Keven's dearest and oldest friends passes on. Randal Malone was raised by old Hollywood, playing backgammon with Lucy and celebrating each of his birthdays with Bob Hope. He was an amazing friend and mentor to Keven and Maria with legendary quotes often repeated on RGF. In addition to honoring him, what to do when a friend is terminally ill. When are you interfering and when are you intervening? In 100 years someone else will own your house. You don't know your great-grandfather. Randal always said 'This is all on loan and merely for our own amusement.' A short and stumbling Lonely Guy Friday but Kev is really out of sorts and asks for your understanding. Lees hier meer over het onderzoek: Scientists traced roses' thorny origins and solved a 400 million-year-old mysterySee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
According to Greek mythology, red roses first appeared when Aphrodite pricked her foot on a thorn, spilling blood on a white rose. Since then, roses' thorns have captured the imaginations of countless poets and filled the outdoor spaces of keen gardeners. For those of us who love the thought of roses, but don't like the prickles – new research published in the journal Science has found the gene that can stop them from forming! Prickles are designed as effective deterrents to herbivores, helping to keep them protected from being eaten. However, they make the cultivation of agricultural plants difficult. While roses are beautiful, especially in a vase – their thorns are less desirable. One common solution is to use a knife to cut off the individual thorns, however this is not only a lengthy and sometimes painful process but can also wound the plant. To try and find the origin of the prickle, scientists started with eggplants (which also have prickles) and found a gene family called LONELY GUY or LOG for short. When they created LOG mutations, they were able to eliminate the prickles in eggplants, and wondered if this gene was responsible for prickles in other plants? They scoured the world for plants that did and didn't have prickles to compare them both and used genome editing to try and remove the prickles from plants as broad as the native Australian berry tree known as desert raisins - to the more well known roses. The team managed to find LOG-related prickle genes in 20 species of plant, which not only could help to engineer thornless varieties but also provides huge insights into understanding millions of years of evolution amongst plants. Interestingly, rose thorns are not actually thorns. 'Thorn' is used to describe a plant with branches modified for physical defence. Because the pointy projections of a rose bush are modified epidermal cells (similar to skin cells in humans), roses do not have thorns, they have prickles.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
LGF from the UK! It's a special edition of RGF this week: Lonely Guy Friday from the UK! How checking ego your ego could take you from Egypt to the promise land and how much it hurts to do so. How we seek peace, get it and then, subconsciously, find ways to invite the chaos back and how awareness can cure that. How low level people talk about other people, second level people talk about the past, high level people talk about ideas and the highest level people talk about execution of ideas. Why talent is not enough today BUT why that is a positive thing if you have less talent. And for you very lonely people on this Friday, amazing, cheap and easy to apply tips to break the ice when entering any and all new environments (work, vacation or otherwise). On this Lonely Guy Friday edition of Regular Guy Friday, we discuss stepping into your light, the magic behind the three words 'at this time', the power in surrender and in simply asking yourself what makes you smile. Are you tired or just not experiencing joy? When you fight to make positive things happen or even fight to overcome negative issues, the effects are often counterintuitive. Surrender doesn't mean to quit, cold climates bring spring happiness and everything good or bad is just 'at this time.' Bye Betches. Hey Heal Squad! Welcome back to another Lonely Guy edition of Regular Guy Friday coming at you all the way from Boston. Kev left on a mission with Mercedes Monet and shares the journey it took to get there. How life is a marathon, not a sprint. The universe tests us when transformation occurs to see if we're really ready to ascend. We train as much as possible, adapt as we go, maybe take breaks, and start running again. How people who are wrong try to bait you into negotiation and the art of non-negotiating. How our bodies incubate disease based on emotions and how important the question “if not now, when?” really is. RGF Bonus: Mercedes' entrance song… CEO! CEO! Bye Betches! We'd also like to dedicate this episode to Peter's long-time friend (and BIG 4-0 fan) who passed away unexpectedly a few days prior to recording. It's January 13th, and there are no movies worthy of celebrating their BIG 4-0's at the 1984 box office, so even though it's only our second episode of the new year/season, we're already doing a bonus episode. Last September we celebrated the BIG 4-0's of DEATHSTALKER and REVENGE OF THE NINJA, the sequel to 1981's ENTER THE NINJA. So, this week we're taking a look at that first NINJA film and DEATHSTALKER's sequel, 1987's DEATHSTALKER II. Welcome back to another Lonely Guy edition of Regular Guy Friday. How the song a 'Hazy Shade of Winter' speaks to many of us. What is Radio Roulette and how can it be a tool to receive guidance from the universe? How when you over give you confuse people and how confused people get angry. How the younger gen could be born with the diseases their grandparents died of. How it is better to go from 'I'll take care of you, if you'll take care of me' to 'I'll take care of me, if you'll take care of you.' How the best contribution to those around you is personal development. How it's less about self sacrifice and more about self-development. How rewarding more for effort rather than achievement, leads to achievement and how the reverse leads to failure. Self-care practices don't always mean feel-good practices. For this reason, we bring you a Lonely Guy Friday version of Regular Guy Friday. On this special 'Halloween' edition of LGF, encountering demonic forces and exorcisms. How dark entities attach to humans, how they cause depression, suicidal thoughts, violence and/or immoral behavior. How the more advanced one's soul is, the more agents of evil want to stop that soul (kind of like what happened to George Bailey in 'It's a Wonderful Life.') How mold, fungus, viruses and parasites could be these dark entities' best weapons. How entities like young, high-octane, powerful beings with big egos. How when you push against the darkness for decades AND survive, you build muscles to use for the light. How codependents hold true to the dysfunctional mantra that you're not entitled to anything and have to give others everything whether they ask for it or not. Steve Martin Month continues as this week we're heading down to the fern store and haggling over haircuts with 1984's The Lonely Guy, directed by Arthur Hiller, and starring Steve Martin, Charles Grodin, Judith Ivey, Steve Lawrence and Robyn Douglas -- a much wackier movie than last week's entry, though one that can't quite tonally balance all of its ambitions, losing its comedic edge to a rather rote romance. Still, the movie is quite funny, with the majority of its laughs belonging to Grodin, who is right at home mining comedy gold out of the absolute worst person to talk to at a party. Can Martin's charm and Grodin's misanthropy lift this movie above its rom-com trappings? We watched it to find out. Other works discussed on this episode include some bonus Martin movies like L.A. Story, Baby Mama, Traitor and The Man With Two Brains, as well as what might be a career-best turn from Grodin in The Great Muppet Caper. We also talk a little video games, as J Mo wades into Star Ocean: First Departure R, while Hayley has become ensnared in the music of one Taylor Swift. If you'd like to watch this week's episode before listening, good luck! Just like last week this one is not readily available on streaming in Canada. We'll be back next week with another Steve Martin movie, though his role as Insolent Waiter might be considered more of a cameo, as we cross off a long-standing unseen from J Mo's collection: 1979's The Muppet Movie, currently streaming on Disney+.
Steve Martin Month begins! As the comedy icon is set to return to the small screen early next week with Season 3 of Only Murders In The Building, we trace Steve Martin's love of crime comedy and detective noir all the way back to 1982's Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid, directed by Carl Reiner, written by Reiner and Martin, and starring Martin, Reiner, Rachel Ward, and a whole host of classic stars of the past including Humphrey Bogart, Cary Grant, Ava Gardner, Burt Lancaster, Ingrid Bergman, Veronica Lake and Vincent Price, as footage from old noir films is edited into an entirely new comedy. It's an incredible conceit when it really works, though the movie could perhaps use a little more Wild And Crazy Guy energy to hold it all together. Plus: We go deep on Barbie now that J Mo's seen it, Hayley is super into the new Carly Rae Jepsen album, and who doesn't like an ice cream treat? This is a difficult film to find online, so if you're looking to watch along with us this week good luck! Unless you live in Chetwynd, British Columbia in which case it is at your local library. And speaking of Chetwynd, stay tuned to the bitter end of this episode for a Peace FM radio throwback dripping with the kind of noir vibes this movie is all about. We'll be back next week with another Steve Martin comedy from Hayley's DVD collection, 1984's The Lonely Guy, which pits Martin opposite Charles Grodin -- a match made in comedy heaven.
Heartbreak can hit anyone. It makes us lonely, disconnected and creates a sense of grief. Nobody denies that it's tough. Dr. Guy Winch is a psychologist, author and podcast host whose TED Talks have tallied up millions of views. Hey Lonely Guys and Gals, the universe has again conspired to pre-empt RGF for another edition of Lonely Guy Friday. When the universe tests you, it's not about pass or fail but ready or not ready. When life cycles repeat, it's less about avoidance and more about altering. Why it's okay to allow others to make mistakes and not interfere with their karma AND how often they are not mistakes they're making at all. Why when it comes to momentos, the less you have the more valuable they are. When physical items you see in your present, remind you of mistakes in your past: the long term detriment and how best to navigate. Buying Ford Pintos, being mocked at the DMV, the decline of the Easter Bunny, Lou Reed's Perfect Day and how baseball's opening day weekend signals the start of spring and summer fun. Stay #krisp. Stay lonely. Bye Betches. Tech issues, travel, water damage and a run down motel appropriately preempt Regular Guy Friday for another edition of Lonely Guy Friday. Deciphering the universe's many conflicting daily messages and how the universe has a sense of humor, too. Question: Having a hard time with assertiveness, creating boundaries, protecting your energy and owning your power in your life? Answer: Practice on someone you don't know. How energy vampires have ADD and don't listen: they just wait for your lips to stop moving. How narcissists negotiate. The lesson behind Albert Einstein's basic math error. Why many of us don't know who we are. Why keeping it real and living beneath your means can be detrimental. The best techniques for Regular People that are in crisis, feeling depressed and/or overwhelmed. The 6 figure difference in being your own General Contractor plus the hazards of hidden mold. Why Friday is for the lonely and how St Patrick's Day signals spring and summer fun. Plenty of Regular Guy Friday name drops, too. Stay #krisp and stay #lonely Heal Squad .
Life issues preempts Regular Guy Friday this week to bring you another Lonely Guy Friday edition. Why narcissists hate (can't) be alone? Why your man reacts to your problems the way he does and why he needs to apply more empathy toward his reactions...but maybe why you need to do the same. Why some friends show up and others don't and why it's not always a bad thing. Why you always show up for others and why others don't show up for you and why that's not always a bad thing, either. Why people may show up - just in different ways. Gratitude for what you versus resentment for what you lack. LGF Bonus: Robert the Robber breaks into AfterBuzz AGAIN...to steal....Tide pods. Is seeking justice natural or childhood traumas at play? The clever way to prevent future thefts and the answer to why a robber would steal Tide pods in the first place. Stay lonely, betches.
Today on the show, we have director, Raja Gosnell. He directed comedy classics like Big Momma's House, starring Martin Lawrence. Never Been Kissed, starring Drew Berrymore, and Yours, Mine & Ours starring Dennis Quaid.Raja is best known as the director who brought not one but two beloved children's cartoons to the big screen, Scooby-Doo and The Smurfs. We also discuss the original vision that Raja and writer James Gunn had for Scooby-Doo. Let's say we finally understand why Scoob and Shaggy always had the munchies. He also directed the relatively low-budget runaway hit Beverly Hills Chihuahua. Raja's films have grossed almost $2 billion at the worldwide box office.Raja wasn't always a director; he started his film career as an assistant editor in the late 1970s.His first credit as a film's main editor was the romantic comedy The Lonely Guy (1984), for director Arthur Hiller. During the 1980s, Gosnell served as editor in films directed by Tom Laughlin, David Worth, Bob Dahlin, Bert Convy, Christopher Leitch, Annabel Jankel, Rocky Morton, Phillip Schuman, and Chris Columbus. For Chris Columbus, he edited the comedy film Heartbreak Hotel (1988), which features a 1970s teenager kidnapping singer Elvis Presley to bring home as a gift for his mother. During the 1990s, Gosnell would serve as editor in several more films by Columbus. The 1990s started with Gosnell working as an editor in two high-profile projects: Pretty Woman (1990) by Garry Marshall and Home Alone (1990) by Chris Columbus. Both turned out to be among the major hits of the year 1990.He then worked in the Columbus films Only the Lonely (1991), Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992), Mrs. Doubtfire (1993), and Nine Months (1995).Raja and I discuss his remarkable career as an editor, why he jumped to directing, and why he chose to do the thing everyone says not to do direct children and animals. I had a ball talking shop with Raja.We also discuss his remarkable new film Gun and a Hotel Bible, which he co-directed with Alicia Joy LeBlanc.Based on an award-winning play, GUN AND A HOTEL BIBLE is the story of a young man on the verge of a violent act (Pete) and his encounter with a personified hotel bible (Gideon). Can Gideon sway Pete before Pete pulls the trigger?Enjoy my conversation with Raja Gosnell.

It's a very special Lonely Guy Tuesday 'Back to School' edition of Better Together. Why getting what you want is usually not for the best. What are your peak life years of productivity? What is the autumn mindset, how can you apply it now and why doing so will help you ascend in so many ways. How regret remains worse than failure. Does Back to School shopping still exist? The Lonely Guy's cost effective method to whiten teeth and how @undergaro may pull an @rodneydangerfield and go 'Back to School' himself one day.
Regular Guys and Gals, @thekeleymeyer and @poojanayyarr are on much needed vaca leaving @undergaro to host this Lonely Guy Friday edition of RGF or "LGF" - cuz yeah we need another ridiculous series to further annoy @mariamenounos.. When we say goodbye to pets. When life missions are served by the least likely, including those in their final hours. When ego serves us and when it is the enemy. What to do to overcome ego? What to do, and how to fit in, when entering new environments and situations. And MOST importantly how to be popular with these three great tips to do so. Lonely Guys and Gals may never be popular or be accepted into the cool cliques but they should never stop trying! #latte #nespresso #frieddough LGF Bonus: Kev's attempts to be catfished again....is he AGAIN thrown back into the ocean? Bye Betches.
It's the Great Greyhound Charity Run! Staffy's handed the leash to Sam to pick a dog to keep our eyes on over the weekend. Are you getting on Lonely Guy?
Episode 126: “The Bridges Episode”Joseph and Tom Wu's feud and in-fighting reaches a new low when Tom leaves Joseph stranded at the airport forcing him to call in from the terminal.Despite this challenge, the ‘unstoppable three' persevere and debate the best scenes involving bridge structures and Top 5 Jeff Bridges' roles.· What did Jim do that annoyed veteran Hollywood royalty Lloyd Bridges?· Which podcast host dressed in Charles Grodin cosplay ala "The Lonely Guy" during a dry spell in his dating life? (Fern not included)· What are the three acting personas of Jeff Bridges? · Which Rickety Old Bridge will be sent into the future, or will it fall apart in the future too?· Why does Jeff Bridges' self-indulgent movie roles appeal to George on such a deep level?IT'S A TRAVESTY! Which critically acclaimed, Oscar-winning Jeff Bridges role was shunned by George and Joseph?
Producing 2 Lonely Guy editions has Kev depleted so we bring you another installment of RGF Zero! RGF Zero, the great taste of regular Guy Fridays with ZERO takeaways! In reviewing past incidents of irony, comedy and coincidence, the universe was telling you something but you probably didn't listen then, so listen now. Master 'work arounds' to master life.. Kev's carnie adventures and gossip from Netflix star studded 'The Pentaverate' premiere party. Kels offers tips on easy nails and mascara. DJ Pooj Pooj rolls out the hits. RGF Bonus: What do Jim Morrison, Adam West and Henry Winkler have in common with @poojanayyar and @thekelseymeyer? Remember, it's RGF Zero. Stay #krisp. Bye Betches.
And on this very special Better Together RGF crossover (think when Laverne and Shirley appeared on Happy Days) we bring you BT 'Lonely Guy Thursday Edition' as Keven sits in solo for Maria, Pooja and Kelsey. Gratitude for what family and loved ones have done for us AND what they failed to do. Sometimes in relationships, you can do the work for both of you to heal. Sometimes we think we are helping others but really they are helping us, even our furry friends. Seeing the world as dark place only attracts that. The positive truth about #WaltDisney. The universe is always speaking to us. Keep listening and if you haven't seen HBO Max 'Somebody Somewhere' then you're missing out on a work of beauty, learning and inspiration.. The great Larry Miller says if you have a roof over your head, a bed to sleep in and people that love you, it's game's over. YOU WON! Stay lonely, stay #krisp.
And on this very special Regular Guy Friday: we bring you RGF 'Lonely Guy Edition' as Keven gives Pooja and Kelsey the day off. The importance of 'taking the temperature' of your relationships. The therapy and release behind free dancing and the 20 dollar shower speakers to help you do so. Be willing to give but willing to receive, too. Sometimes they love you as much as they can. Let your past guide the present. You survived the battles, therefore you won. and @stevemartin #lonelyguy movie is underrated. RGF Bonus: a deep dive on the lyrics to Stairway to Heaven. Stay lonely, stay #krisp. Bye Betches!
On the podcast this week, I welcomed back a very talented and thoughtful writer as well as a man recently (and affectionately) dubbed "Film Twitter Royalty." Peter Avellino's long-form essays on the movies that fascinate and frustrate him make his blog Mr. Peel's Sardine Liqueur a must-read for cinephiles. In a conversation that's equal parts witty nostalgia and astute film criticism, we took a look at the (recently) late, beloved comedy star Charles Grodin's work in the films "The Heartbreak Kid," "Seems Like Old Times," "The Lonely Guy," and "Midnight Run," and in the midst of discussing all of the food in these movies, found ourselves getting very hungry along the way.Theme Music: Solo Acoustic Guitar by Jason Shaw, Free Music ArchiveOriginally Posted on Patreon (9/30/21) here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/56816129
His first big break in the movies came with a film called The Heartbreak Kid. But that was just the beginning for Charles Grodin. Then came Midnight Run. Seems Like Old Times. The Lonely Guy. And, finally, a new generation discovered him in the Beethoven movies. It looks like the classic success story. But in his 1989 book called It Would Be So Nice if You Weren't Here, Grodin wanted to reveal how about 1% success overshadowed the 99% rejection actors suffer.
Suicidal lonely guys, washed up talent managers, and factory workers with radiation poisoning; was January 27th, 1984 the funniest week in movies or WHAT?!? This week the boys revisit Steve Martin’s comedy THE LONELY GUY, Woody Allen’s ode to entertainment, BROADWAY DANNY ROSE, and the Meryl Streep/Cher drama, SILKWOOD. Dig if you will the podcast and might as well JUMP into Episode 35 of Opening Weekend!

By 1984, Steve Martin had played an idiot, a down-on-his-luck sheet music salesman in 30s Chicago, a noir detective, and a mad scientist – quite a variety of characters, though all very specific in their characterizations. Because of that, seeing him play a pretty normal, non-affected straight guy in Arthur Hiller's comedy The Lonely Guy almost seemed a bit of a surprise. Surely, Martin was looking for a variety of parts so he could show off what we could do, so it makes sense. The film didn't end up being a success, but it still allowed Martin the chance to play something a bit different yet again. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue our Steve Martin series with Hillers' 1984 film The Lonely Guy. We talk about why a lot of this film doesn't work, but why parts of it do work. We look at why comedy beats with Dr. Joyce Brothers may work (or not, depending on your take), but how her presence does seem to date the film a bit. We look at the team behind some of the technical elements, including composer Jerry Goldsmith. And we look at other cast members like Charles Grodin and Judith Ivey and chat about what works with their performances versus Martin's. It's a tricky little film that feels at times like the parts are better than the sum. Regardless, it has some great comedic beats, even if the tone is a mess. We have a great time talking about it on this week's show so check it out then tune in. The Next Reel – when the movie ends, our conversation begins. Monday Funday... and a major announcement: it's a Christmas miracle! Plus, Christmas in New York... tossing bears... and Mike is "The Lonely Guy".
Ken and Kendra give their final synopsis on the holiday known as Thanksgiving and rate their favorite holidays (including the pagan ones). Ken watched the Firm which shockingly features Tom Cruise along with Gene Hackman, Holly Hunter, Ed Harris, and David Strathairn. Kendra gives The Lonely Guy with Steve Martin a quick plug. Kendra reveals the folly of Ken saying golly instead of jolly. She also really tears into a movie on Amazon Prime called One Small Hitch. Ken watched Juliet, Naked and extols the virtues of Ethan Hawke playing a likable screw up and Rose Byrne just doing anything because the woman is an exemplar of talent and spirit. Kendra likes Chris O'Dowd despite Ken not wanting to mention him. And our connection to Peri Gilpin... Rose Byrne was in Juliet, Naked which we talked about. She was also in Neighbors (2014) and Neighbors 2 (2016) with the wonderful Hannibal Buress. Hannibal Buress was in Flock of Dudes (2015) with Peri Gilpin which we have now vowed to watch. I’m joined by Mike (@theGIGGAS) from Back to the Futurama (@backtofuturama) to talk about this song from TOYPAJ that I am constantly wishing was called “Short Story of a Lonely Guy” like he says in the song. If it does, we would have been doing this episode on 8/9 instead of 8/20! Episode 121 – … Continue reading Episode 121 – Story of a Lonely Guy →
With respect to Steve Martin . . . this was the best title I could muster today.
Because Guy can barely pay attention to ...well anything, he forgot that Gaz wasn't going to be this week and hadn't set up to record with anyone else. He talks about seeing the new Avengers flick, Apple financials, and the potential for broken microphones in iPhones after updating to iOS 11.3

Took us a little while (thanks to #TWDxFearTWD)! We've changed the background music - hence the new interlude - as well as the colors of our episode logos to suit the series - Fear The Walking Dead! Is nothing's to good for our listeners * You've never watched Fear The Walking Dead, this is the perfect episode to start with * The difference in cinematic colors/tones and how they contrast to #TheWalkingDead * Morgan decides to leave #TWD "16-24 Weeks" after #Negan's defeat and #AllOutWar ends * Our first of two odd, out-of-place characters, #JohnDorie, is a lot like #MorganJones: isolated for an extended period * Platypus, Pasta, Potable...? P.P.P.? Heath?! * Along with living in a movie theater for a really long time, J.D. seems like he was a Rodeo Cowboy * Is the Laura J.D. looking for a mute? or just didn't speak much? * Just like TWD, FearTWD is finally introducing character personas: The Gunslinger, The Journalist, and... Karate Man? * This episode feels a lot like the a video game intro * Morgan ends up taking Carol's, Rick's, and Jesus' advice, whether he realizes it or not * Morgan's encounter with Lonely Guy is revealing - even when avoiding people, can't help himself from aiding * ...and does it again when encountering John Dorie: Dave reveals his series' man-crush #GarretDillahunt * We don't blame Morgan for leaving a snoring JD: He borrows a move from #CarolPeletier * Morgan is dubbed "Karate Man" by Leland and the Pilferers, which is so "Texas". ALso, New Yorkers are not rude! * JD screws Morgan's pooch, proving Rick was right about world finding it's way back to him * Althea's militaristically tricked out S.W.A.T. vehicle: toy execs grew simultaneous erections over merch opportunities * ...how many tchotchkes is too many? Carol & Dave prove they'd make glitzy scavengers * #Althea only uses her SWAT van to ensure a fair deal, rather than assert force on The Pilferers * The odd, displaced nature of a journalist in the walkerpocalypse * What's the deal with the numbers on these structures? 51? 457? * Leland and The Pilferers are unusually persistent: even when saving one of them, he turns around and tries to kill Morgan * ...BEST ACTION SCENE: walker grenade, dives into a bathtub, kablooey * We finally see what the SWAT van can do... yeesh. Leland was right to be afraid * Morgan reveals to Althea why he needed to leave: "I left before I left" "I lose people, and then I lose myself" *waddle-waddle* * Whether Karate Man wants it or not, The Gunslinger saves him from certain death, then enables him to reach the Lonelyman Walker * Morgan buries the Lonely Man in an attempt to bury a more grave future "We're always alone" * Finally: Just take the candy, Morgan. John admits that he's realistic about his chances at finding Laura, but it's not the point * ...this episode should've been called "Get a Life" * Most of our series regulars finally show up at the very end of the episode to ambush our new people (I like new people) * ...WHERE DID #LucianaGalvez COME FROM? WHAT HAPPENED TO #AliciaClark, #NickClark, and #VictorStrand to turn dark? a tremendous amount of time has passed and we're missing one #MadisonClark * Sneak Peek: Time rewind, are we seeing the introduction of the group that eventually falls our protagonists? * Sneak Peek: Our series regulars either don't seem to know what the building numbers are or think our new people are responsible for them * Sneak Peek: #JennaElfman as Naomi... friend or foe? Looks like she's faces some horrors, especially with some Oily Walkers * Other than Strand as The Con Man, is Nick "The Addict/Risk-Chaser another one of these caricature personas? --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/squawkingdead/message
Today's Guest: Bruce Jay Friedman, author, Lucky Bruce, Steambath, The Dick, The Lonely Guy, Splash, Stern Mr. Media is recorded live before a studio audience of famous writers, brand name celebrities and their heirs who are mentioned in Lucky Bruce and are standing by to see what Mr. Friedman might say about them next… in the NEW new media capital of the world, St. Petersburg, Florida! Order Lucky Bruce: A Literary Memoir by Bruce Friedman by clicking the book cover above! How many guys can write an autobiography that is part Andy Warhol Diaries, part Zelig and part Forrest Gump? Even if you’ve never read a lick of Bruce Jay Friedman’s voluminous career output, or seen one of his movies or Broadway productions, I guarantee you’ll find his new memoir, Lucky Bruce, delightful. BRUCE JAY FRIEDMAN audio excerpt: "In the beginning I didn't think I knew enough to fill up a whole book. Now, with the clock ticking, I don't have enough time to fill out all the ideas I have." Why delightful? Because it’s not the story of a guy standing on his mother’s step begging you to notice him and pay attention. His substantial collection of life stories and career anecdotes weave a history of a guy who, by his own telling, wandered in and out of history. The Accidental Success, you might call it. Or American Splendor, Manhattan Edition. There is Friedman, who fell into a top editing job at Magazine Management Company, run by Martin Goodman (who also created Marvel Comics, which employed his nephew, Stan Lee). While there, Friedman hired and befriended a guy named Mario Puzo. Along the way to Lucky, Friedman declines the top editing job at Playboy, gets into a street fight with Norman Mailer, parties with Crazy Joe Gallo, takes a leak next to Muhammad Ali, writes the screenplays for Splash and Stir Crazy, and… well, frankly, I dog-eared so many pages of note that my dog ears have dog ears. (I should note that this wonderful opportunity to interview Bruce came about as a result of my friendship with his son, famed caricaturist and illustrator Old Jewish Comedians, Drew Friedman. Drew has been a guest here and it was he who suggested a conversation with his dad and open that door. Thanks, Drew!) Watch the Mr. Media interview with Bruce Jay Friedman's sons Drew, Josh Alan and Kipp, below! Hello all, In this episode we read Genesis 4 where Cain murders his brother able. We also learn of the horrors of gardening, how not to reject a gift and solving problems the only way you know how. Enjoy! PS I mention a movie that I call Lonely People. It is actually called The Lonely Guy. It is still hilarious.
Virtual Memories – season 4 episode 8 - The Slippery Animal "I'm always in the middle of a struggle with a short story. You'd think I'd have the hang of it by now. It's a slippery animal.'" Literary legend Bruce Jay Friedman joins the Virtual Memories Show for a fun conversation about his literary career, which encompasses six decades of short stories, novels, plays and Oscar®-nominated screenwriting. We talk about his newest projects, how both the writing and the sale of short stories have changed over the course of his career, and why he's happier in that form than the novel. Why was he successful in Hollywood when F. Scott Fitzgerald and Anthony Powell crapped out there? Listen in to find out! "Hollywood to me was fun. Like a boy being let loose in a candy store. I was offended when I'd get called in off the tennis court to write a few scenes. I can tell you: there is no one who had more fun than I did in Hollywood." We also talk about how stories begin, where he sees himself in the continuum of Jewish American writers, why Dustin Hoffman hates him, whether he's ever been tempted to write The Big Novel, why he's getting more Jewish as he gets older, why he prefers the Franco-Prussian war over other wars, and how to find the right kind of pistachio nuts. "I always feel guilty about being entertained. I feel like I should be reading Suetonius." Bonus: I rant about leaving my job and ask you for money! Enjoy the conversation! About our Guest Novelist, playwright, short story writer and Oscar-nominated screenwriter Bruce Jay Friedman was born in New York City. Friedman published his first novel Stern in 1962 and established himself as a writer and playwright, most famously known for his off-Broadway hit Steambath (1973) (TV) and his 1978 novel The Lonely Guy's Book of Life. In addition to short stories and plays, Mr. Friedman has also published seven other novels, and has written numerous screenplays, including the Oscar-nominated Splash (1984). His memoir, Lucky Bruce, came out in 2011. He resides in New York City with his second wife, educator Patricia J. O'Donohue. Check out his Amazon page for info on his books and plays. Credits: This episode's music is Frenesi by Artie Shaw. The conversation was recorded at Mr. Friedman's home on a pair of Blue enCORE 200 microphones feeding into a Zoom H4n recorder. The intro and outro were recorded on Blue Yeti USB Microphone. Processing was done in Audacity and Garage Band. Photo of Mr. Friedman by me.
"With my brothers, it was like ‘Resistance is futile! You will enjoy horror movies! You will go to comic book conventions! You will learn to love B-movies and worship Tor Johnson and Plan 9 from Outer Space! Shemp Howard must be worshipped!" Kipp Friedman is the latest member of a comedic dynasty (as per the subtitle of his new memoir, Barracuda in the Attic). The son of novelist, journalist, playwright and screenwriter Bruce Jay Friedman and brother of cartoonist Drew Friedman and writer/musician Josh Alan Friedman, Kipp has tossed his hat into the ring with a book filled with tales of New York City in the 1960's and ‘70s, of pop culture education, of living with his divorced dad during his days writing "The Lonely Guy" columns, and more! "My father was so prolific for so many years as a writer, people would wonder why he never seemed to be working. And yet his stuff kept on being published. I think making it seem effortless rubbed off on his kids. We agonize over everything." While in NYC for a series of book readings, Kipp sat down to talk with me about Barracuda in the Attic, the joys of “growing up Friedman,” hunting for comics and Mad magazines with his brothers, what he misses about New York, what he'll never forgive the Knicks for, how he ended up with a "real job," and what it felt like to add a volume to the bookshelf of works by his family. It's a wonderful perspective on the most creative family any of us will likely ever see!
