Nadine takes a coffee break with debut author Erynne Rivers about Wench, her fae-drenched, romantic reimagining of the Robin Hood myth told through Maid Marian's eyes. They discuss the surreal wait between selling a book and seeing it on shelves, the historical research that shaped the world (including medieval women's erased business ownership and the physical toll of archery), and Erynne's messy-first-draft writing process, including four scrapped versions of her sophomore novel. They close on writing rituals, chronic illness and creative work, and the "word of the year" that's guiding Erynne through 2025: whimsy.Erynne's recommendations from the episode: Honey in Her Veins by Ruth Mikel, Steel Born by Taylor J. These solo episodes are intended to be shorter – with a thought, a question, something practical to try.I talk so much about discovering our voice in another language, but I also started reflecting on the way I communicate in my first language – in writing and on the podcast. Finding what feels natural and conveys the right message is a journey too, especially if you have previously worked somewhere else where it was necessary to write in a different way.Of course I focus more on working in our additional languages because that's what my clients are doing with English. But at the same time, it's good to reflect on the ways in which we communicate in our first language too. There's so much talk about optimising and improving, that sometimes all the individuality is gone from a message – and that's really sad.I don't believe we should just write as we speak. Sometimes that's really hard to read, especially if your going in three different directions at the same time and it becomes hard to follow. But I do believe that people are looking for human connection over perfection – whatever that is – in our first or any additional language. And in my case at least, for a while, I was living with professional restrictions that don't apply now!And of course, if you are looking for support with being more visible in English, let me know using the contact form and we can arrange a time to discuss it. I have a number of group and individual programmes in which I accompany people on this visibility journey. Also check my home page – if you'd like more details about the individual programmes.

Japanese Together In this relaxed “Coffee Break with Noriko” episode, Noriko shares reflections on philosophy, modern social trends, and her recent language-learning experiences. She begins by introducing the book Suichuu no Tetsugakushatachi by Rei Nagai (永井玲衣『水中の哲学者たち』), a gentle philosophy essay collection that explains how philosophy begins with ordinary questions and everyday “why?” moments. Noriko especially appreciates the idea of philosophical dialogue as a respectful exchange where people listen openly instead of trying to “win” arguments online. She then discusses two trendy Japanese words: メンパmenpa (mental performance) and “emotion-muted society.” These expressions describe how modern people feel mentally exhausted from social media, AI, endless choices, and online conflict. Many people now prioritize emotional comfort, simplicity, and stress-free lifestyles. In the second half, Noriko gives updates on her language learning journey. She explains how extensive reading in Korean and Spanish helped her regain speaking confidence after years without practice. Through graded readers, podcasts, and conversations, she rediscovered the joy of learning languages naturally and gradually. Finally, she encourages listeners to connect Japanese learning with personal interests such as crafts, science, anime, or books in order to stay motivated long term.哲学(てつがく)- philosophy学術的(がくじゅつてき)- academic対話(たいわ)- dialogue肩書き(かたがき)- title / professional label提供(ていきょう)- providing日常生活(にちじょうせいかつ)- daily life素朴(そぼく)- simple / innocent疑問(ぎもん)- question / doubt排除(はいじょ)- exclusion論破(ろんぱ)- defeating an argument風潮(ふうちょう)- social trend対等(たいとう)- equal雰囲気(ふんいき)- atmosphere衝撃(しょうげき)- shock / impact注目(ちゅうもく)- attention発展(はってん)- development概念(がいねん)- concept限定(げんてい)- limitation / restriction精神的(せいしんてき)- mental / psychological感情(かんじょう)- emotion我慢(がまん)- endurance / self-restraint揺さぶる(ゆさぶる)- to shake emotionally無難(ぶなん)- safe / uncontroversial傾向(けいこう)- tendency学習者(がくしゅうしゃ)- learner自信(じしん)- confidence定期的(ていきてき)- regularly優先順位(ゆうせんじゅんい)- priority習慣(しゅうかん)- habit趣味(しゅみ)- hobby編み物(あみもの)- knitting惑星(わくせい)- planet

Most AI initiatives fail. Not because of the model. Because organizations skip the boring, essential engineering work that makes software survive contact with reality. Jake Dubin has spent 25 years building production systems, starting with neural networks that solved CAPTCHA back in 1999. He is the founder of Transcendent Software and is building CoffeeBreak, an AI platform focused on reliable human-centered workflows. In this episode, Jake breaks down why human in the loop almost never means what people think it means, what vibe coding is, and why it is quietly creating massive technical debt, and why the same fundamentals that built dependable software for decades still apply, no matter how powerful the model gets. If your AI investment is not delivering what you promised the board, this episode tells you exactly why.
