He titulado este podcast: “Porsche 928: Objetivo, “matar” al 911”… y seguro que algunos habéis pensado que es lo que he hecho para usar este título, un puro clickbait. Pues os equivocáis. Vamos a contar esta historia como nadie te la ha contado y gracias a la revista 0a100 vamos a avalar lo que decimos con datos, nombres y fechas. Y es que trabajar con la revista CEROaCIEN es un verdadero lujo, contar con información fiable, de calidad y no siempre conocida. En esta ocasión dedican ¡¡100 paginas!!! a este modelo. Y sobre todo cuentan cosas muy poco conocidas… Para mi CEROaCIEN es una revista imprescindible para el buen aficionado. Os vuelvo a recordar que CEROaCIEN solo se vende online y que si eres garajista tienes un descuento usando el código GH5… Ahora que Porsche “le da a todo”, ya sean SUV, berlinas, diésel, eléctricos e híbrido, da igual, y que la electrónica permite que el 911 sea un coche, desde el punto de vista de la conducción, “razonable” nos olvidamos de cómo era la situación de la marca a principios de 1970. Su gama era prácticamente de un solo coche, un coche que la propia Porsche consideraba entonces, ¡hace más de 50 años! obsoleto e inadecuado para el mercado que se avecinada donde la seguridad, la eficiencia y el confort, eran claves. El 911 no era especialmente seguro, en seguridad activa por su complicado comportamiento, en seguridad pasiva por que al no llevar el motor delante, no tenía “colchón” en caso de golpe frontal, su motor de refrigeración por aire no era un dechado de eficiencia en cuanto a consumo y emisiones y del confort y de la habitabilidad… mejor ni hablamos. Todo esto no es cosa mía… para nada. Era la opinión del señor Ernst Fuhrmann que en la primavera de 1971 es nombrado director de la compañía. Pero antes habían pasado muchas cosas y, como de costumbre vamos a comenzar por el principio… Una cosa que se olvida es que la marca Porsche, como fabricante de coches, no la crea Ferdinand Porsche, muy centrado en el trabajo con Auto Union y VW que le absorbía todo su tiempo e ingenio. La “oficina de proyecto Porsche” iba muy bien. Es su hijo Ferry, quien se había independizado, el que inicia el estudio de un modelo deportivo, el “proyecto 356” que se convertiría en el primer modelo fabricado con la marca Porsche. Porsche era una marca familiar, de gestión muy familiar, pero de gran éxito como asesor, sobre todo de VW, y como fabricante de deportivos. El 356, realmente un derivado deportivo del Escarabajo, necesitaba un sucesor y nace el 911. No nos engañemos: La marca Porsche, como fabricante de coches, nace con ambiciones más bien modestas. A pesar de ello, el éxito del 911 y los crecientes encargos como asesores técnicos hace que la marca crezca y mucho. A comienzos de la década de los 70 esta empresa “familiar” contaba con 4.000 empleados y fabricaba más de 14.000 coches. Pero este éxito a punto estuvo de acabar con la marca, pues ya sabéis que los “asuntos de familia” son complicados de gestionar. El Sr. Porsche, Ferry, el hijo, pues el padre había fallecido en 1951, decide profesionalizar la empresa y separar los temas de las familias Porsche y Piëch de la gestión empresarial. Ferdinand Piëch se va a VW Audi, Ferry “Butzi” Porsche, nieto de Ferdinand Porsche, funda su propia empresa “Porsche Design y… Y, ¿quién queda al frente de la marca Porsche? Pues el señor Ernst Fuhrman, quien se enfrenta a una situación delicada… USA era el mercado más importante de Porsche y desde 1965 con la aparición del libro “Inseguro a cualquier velocidad” de Ralph Nader, la sociedad era muy sensible al tema de la seguridad de los coches. Este libro, tan famoso como, para mí, parcial e injusto arremetía contra el Chevrolet Corvair y, de paso, contra todos los coches con motor posterior… como era el caso del 911. Criticaban la estabilidad en curva, la dirección inestable, la sensibilidad al viento lateral y su inseguridad en caso de choque frontal. Era el caso del 911 que a cambio, contaba con una cohorte de seguidores para los que un Porsche que no llevase motor posterior bóxer y de aire, era poco menos que un “anatema”, algo inaceptable. Más problemas: El VW-Porsche 914 tuvo un éxito aceptable en los USA, pero no en el resto de los mercados. Y la propuesta de Porsche para sustituir al VW Escarabajo, el casi desconocido y me atrevo a decir que exótico EA266, no cuajo. Este prototipo contaba con motor central bóxer situado bajo los asientos traseros y al presidente de VW Rudolf Leiding no le gustó… Honestamente no me extraña, pero esto supuso una importante pérdida de facturación para Porsche. Y, por si todo esto fuese poco, para complicarlo todo un poco más, en 1973 se desata la crisis del petróleo que no solo encarece los combustibles, sino que provoca un cierto rechazo de parte de la sociedad, especialmente la americana, a los modelos deportivos y prestacionales. Todo esto que he contado quitaba el sueño al Sr. Fuhrmann, pues pensaba que contentar a esos porschistas y seguidores acérrimos era importante, pero para crecer necesitaban un modelo más GT que deportivo… Os leo literalmente un sumario de la revista CEROaCIEN, clave para entender todo esto: “Fuhrmann estaba convencido que el 911 tenía un tiempo limitado y que finalmente quedaría desfasado. Pretendía orientar a Porsche hacia un nuevo mercado de Gran Turismos lujosos y refinados”. ¡Esto es poner el dedo en la llaga! La semilla del 928 fue un proyecto denominado “Coche deportivo K”. Lo primero que se decidió fue poner el motor delante con propulsión posterior. No fue una decisión fácil y si queréis conocer todos los detalles los tenéis en la revista. La primera opción fue un motor V6 a 60 grados. Pero la opción ganadora fue un motor V8 a 90 grados, con taqués hidráulicos para que fuese más silencioso y requiriese un menor mantenimiento. En las primeras pruebas en banco se alcanzaron sin dificultad los 300 CV, cifra que era el objetivo inicial. Otro rasgo característico era el sistema “transaxle” con el motor y el embrague delante y el cambio y diferencial detrás uncidos por un tubo rígido. Si queréis saber más hicimos un vídeo titulado “Transaxle, ¿mejor que el motor central?”, os invito a verlo. Por fin, a pesar de tanto lío y tanto tiempo de desarrollo, el 1978 es presentado el Porsche 928, para mi uno de los mejores Porsche de la historia y en su momento con una avanzadísima tecnología, con un magnífico motor V8, sistema “Transaxle” un sistema de suspensión posterior denominado Weissach que hacía al coche muy noble y dócil para su potencia, y un confort y acabados de auténtico lujo. ¿Cómo ves una comparativa entre el 928 y el 911 Turbo? He probado ambos coches y muy a fondo… ¡y no pueden ser más distintos!
