On May 19, 1884, a small yacht containing four men set sail from England to Australia.  On July 5th, the ship was hit by a massive wave and capsized.  The crew escaped the shipwreck on a lifeboat, but was left in a horrible situation. They were hundreds of miles from land, with no fresh water, and a single pound of turnips for food. Three weeks later, on July 25, food was out, and the men were still adrift, and the sailors made the decision to kill and eat one of their own.  Learn more about the sinking of the Mignonette and the legal ethics of cannibalism on this episode of Everything Everywhere Daily.  Sponsors Quince Go to quince.com/daily for 365-day returns, plus free shipping on your order! The months of the year are named after Roman god, and some are named after their placement in the year. However, the first month to be named after an actual person was the month of July, which was named after Julius Caesar.  What is surprising isn't that the name of the month has stuck for over 2000 years, it's that more rulers didn't try to name months of the year after themselves.  Many more rulers would have done this if they had answered their subjects' questions.  Join me for volume 32 of questions and answers on this episode of Everything Everywhere Daily.  ***5th Anniversary Celebration RSVP*** Sponsors Newspapers.com Get 20% off your subscription to Newspapers.com Mint Mobile Cut your wireless bill to 15 bucks a month at mintmobile.com/eed Quince Go to quince.com/daily for 365-day returns, plus free shipping on your order! In 1818, the man who would go on to become one of the greatest leaders in the cause against American slavery was himself born into slavery. At the age of 20, he escaped bondage and went on to lead one of the most remarkable careers of the 19th century.  He led a multifaceted life, including becoming one of the era's most notable orators, a newspaper publisher, an author, a presidential advisor, and an ambassador.  In the end, he perhaps played one of the biggest roles in the end of slavery.
