All sports are governed by a body of rules. Within those rules, there is usually a set of norms for how the game should be played. Most coaches will instruct their players to use similar techniques. However, every so often, someone comes along who totally rethinks how a game can be played.  Using the same set of rules, they come up with a totally different approach to the game, which sometimes can be revolutionary.  Other times, it's simply evolutionary. Learn more about innovative sports strategies and how taking a different approach to a game can lead to positive results on this episode of Everything Everywhere Daily. ***5th Anniversary Celebration RSVP*** Sponsors Newspapers.com Get 20% off your subscription to Newspapers.com Mint Mobile Cut your wireless bill to 15 bucks a month at mintmobile.com/eed Quince Go to quince.com/daily for 365-day returns, plus free shipping on your order! In late May and early June of 1917, the French Army faced what could have been an extensive crisis.  After three years of some of the most brutal conflict that the world had ever seen, many soldiers had had enough.  Thousands of troops refused to obey orders and refused to go along with the suicidal attacks that were the hallmark of trench warfare.  In response, the French turned to one of their greatest heroes to solve the problem. Yamamoto was the loudest voice against going to war with the United States and was one of only a few officials in the Japanese leadership who spent time in the United States and understood the country.  Learn more about Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, his rise and tragic end on this episode of Everything Everywhere Daily. “If you're doing a weekly podcast, the fastest way to double your downloads… is to do two episodes a week.” – Gary ArndtWhat an incredible episode this was. Gary Arndt isn't just a successful podcaster — he's a walking case study in consistency, discipline, and strategy. I've followed Gary for years, and to have him on Smarter Podcasting was not only a privilege, but a personal highlight.Gary's podcast Everything Everywhere Daily has over 50 million downloads, and unlike many shows, it's a solo, scripted, short-form, daily podcast. No guests. No fluff. Just educational content delivered with precision. He does it all himself — and he does it every day.As a podcaster and podcast producer, I found this conversation both inspiring and humbling. Gary breaks the rules you think you're supposed to follow — no niche, no guests, no endless chitchat — and instead builds a show he wishes someone else had made. And it works. This is one of those episodes you'll want to listen to more than once.Key TakeawaysYour show needs a reason to exist: Most podcasts fail because they're not actually compelling. Forget interviews (unless you're landing A-listers): Gary chose to do a solo, scripted show because the guest-based format is oversaturated and hard to scale without big names.Frequency + Quality = Growth: A daily show means more discovery opportunities. More reps. More downloads. But it only works if the content is great.Podcast promotion works best… on podcasts: TikTok, Instagram, social media in general? Nice for awareness, but they don't convert. Podcast listeners hang out on podcast apps — meet them there.Invest in your show like a real business: If you're not putting in money or time, don't expect big results. Growth doesn't happen by accident — it's intentional, strategic, and yes, expensive.Consistency builds audience trust: Evergreen episodes, a predictable format, and daily drops create listener habits. That's why thousands have joined Gary's “Completionist Club.”Chapters and Timestamps00:00 – Intro: Why Gary Arndt is a podcasting anomaly03:00 – Why most interview podcasts don't grow07:50 – The secret power of daily, scripted, short-form content13:40 – Gary's take on investing in your podcast from day one27:10 – Why he quit TikTok (and social media) despite viral views30:30 – The best way to grow: advertise where podcast listeners already areSend us a textEmail me (niall@sevenmillionbikes.com) or contact me on Seven Million Bikes Podcasts Facebook or Instagram to book your free Podcast Audit! Thanks to James Mastroianni from The Wrong Side Of Hollywood for the endorsement! In 1818, the man who would go on to become one of the greatest leaders in the cause against American slavery was himself born into slavery. At the age of 20, he escaped bondage and went on to lead one of the most remarkable careers of the 19th century.  He led a multifaceted life, including becoming one of the era's most notable orators, a newspaper publisher, an author, a presidential advisor, and an ambassador.  In the end, he perhaps played one of the biggest roles in the end of slavery. In 1610, a European astronomer used a new invention called the telescope to observe the planet Jupiter. What he found revolutionized the science of astronomy and our entire understanding of the universe. Galileo also observed Jupiter that same year.  The observation of Jupiter led to the discovery of the first objects in the solar system since antiquity.  Today, astronomers are hoping that some of these moons of Jupiter might have the best hope of harboring life outside of Earth in our Solar System. Learn more about the moons of Jupiter, the controversy surrounding their discovery, and why they are so important on this episode of Everything Everywhere Daily. After the American Revolution, the United States economy was in trouble. One solution proposed to solve the crisis was the establishment of a national bank.  The bank wasn't just an economic issue; it also sparked one of the first constitutional debates in the nation's history.  Fast-forward several decades, and the United States found itself debating the exact same issue, with very similar results.  Learn more about the first and second Banks of the United States, why they were created, and how they ended on this episode of Everything Everywhere Daily. The Romans were familiar with Africa. At one point, they controlled everything on the north coast of Africa from Morocco to Egypt.  However, below their African territories was the vast Sahara Desert, which was extremely difficult to cross. For all practical purposes, it served as a permeable barrier between the people above and below the desert.  As such, historians have wondered just how much the people above and below the Sahara knew about each other.  Learn more about  Rome and Sub-Saharan Africa, and what contact they had with each other on this episode of Everything Everywhere Daily. While it served as a barrier for armies, it also served as a hindrance to commerce. The movement of goods and people across the English Channel was much more difficult than he small distance that had to be crossed.  Some dreamed of one day taming that barrier, and in the 1990s, that dream came true. For thousands of years, people have looked into the night sky and seen something unusual. It was fuzzy, sometimes bright, and it wasn't there before. It appeared out of nowhere and, after a few days or weeks, disappeared as mysteriously as it had appeared. When these events occurred, they were often interpreted as omens. Good or bad depending on who was doing the interpretation.  Today, we have a much better understanding of what they are and how they work. If you were to ask most people what year they associate with the American Revolution, it would be 1776. That was the year that the Continental Congress declared Independence.  However, 1776 wasn't the start of the revolution, nor was it the end of the revolution. In fact, if it hadn't been for the Declaration of Independence, it would have gone down as a pretty horrible year for the revolution.  For my money, the most interesting year of the revolution was actually the first year, 1775.  Learn more about 1775 and the start of the American Revolution on the 1775th episode of Everything Everywhere Daily.
