Girls in Single-Sex Schools Face Major STEM Access Gap

Irish Tech News Audio Articles

The 2025 I Wish Survey has found that more than half of girls in single-sex schools see limited subject choice as a barrier to pursuing STEM. The annual 2025 Survey of Female Students' Attitudes to STEM by I Wish - a national non-profit that empowers girls to see the potential of STEM - also reveals stark differences between single-sex and mixed schools. Among the 2,335 Transition Year female students surveyed in single-sex schools, just 5% reported access to Construction Studies and 6% to Engineering, compared with 84% and 74% respectively in mixed schools. This trend reflects the national outlook, with the Department of Education's 2024 Indicator Report showing that only 71% of girls' schools offer at least one STEM subject beyond Maths or Science, compared with 96% of boys' schools. These findings highlight the structural barriers that continue to shape subject choice for girls in single-sex schools, limiting early exposure to key STEM pathways. The report calls for urgent action to ensure equal access to STEM education for every girl in Ireland. Central to this mission is the 11th annual I Wish Festival, taking place on 5 February 2026 at the RDS Dublin, which will bring together over 4,000 students to hear from leading female voices in global STEM industries. Registration is now open at iwish.ie/tickets/. Speaking at the launch of the Report at Government Buildings, Taoiseach Micheál Martin said: "I Wish continues to play a pivotal role in inspiring the next generation of girls to pursue futures in STEM. As technology and AI rapidly evolve, Ireland must have a strong pipeline of diverse talent ready to meet that challenge. The latest report from I Wish reinforces that early engagement is essential. This Government is fully committed to addressing the barriers facing females in STEM and ensuring every girl has the opportunity to shape their future through science, technology, engineering and mathematics." I Wish co-founder, Gillian Keating, added: "We're seeing real progress as more young women than ever before are pursuing STEM at third level, and that's something to celebrate. But this year's findings make it clear that the pipeline is still too narrow at the start. Limited subject choices, particularly in single-sex schools, continue to restrict girls' opportunities. Exposure drives opportunity. "The I Wish Festival is part of that journey, a vibrant, high-energy space where girls can experience STEM in action, meet inspiring women, and start to imagine their own futures in these fields." After a successful two-year pilot, I Wish have announced a new partnership with Logitech to scale its Primary Programme, which helps boost girls' confidence in STEM from a younger age through alumni talks, industry visits and hands-on experiments. Participation in the programme grew by 38% in 2025, reaching 265 students. However, confidence remains a concern - just half (49%) of students at primary level said they felt good at maths only sometimes, while 17% were not confident in STEM. I Wish co-founder, Caroline O'Driscoll, said: "Early intervention is critical. Almost half of the students express a growing anxiety about maths, and that's a concern. On a more positive note, 50% of students want more STEM activities in the classroom, with 95% of girls saying they believed that girls can be just as good as boys in STEM. That curiosity and confidence need to be nurtured. "Interestingly, we are also seeing a really strong link between sport and confidence. The data shows a clear difference: girls who play sport are more confident in STEM subjects, school life, and even speaking up in class - often by 10 to 15 percentage points. Building that connection between sport and STEM helps develop resilience, teamwork and problem-solving skills that open the door to underrepresented STEM fields." The I Wish 2025 Survey of Female Students' Attitudes to STEM sets out a roadmap for change, calling for early access to STEM education for all girls, ...

The world is a dumpster fire, confirmed. Following California's landmark AI safety bill SB 53, the head of Nvidia is allegedly "quaking in his boots"—which is a good sign, unlike the news that the "Nirvana Baby" Spencer Elden's lawsuit was finally dismissed. Meanwhile, corporate America continues its pivot to chaos: Spotify shuffled its execs, Meta is charging UK users for ad-free Facebook and Instagram, and the UK is introducing digital ID cards (Hello, Mark of the Beast). The entire internet is now dominated by bots, proving the Cracker Barrel logo outrage was manufactured, a fact that's somehow less depressing than the FCC accidentally leaking iPhone schematics. Naturally, Alphabet just paid $22 million to settle President Trump's YouTube lawsuit, confirming that legal threats are the new VC funding. Disney is panicking over an "AI Actress," sending cease and desist letters to Character.AI, while OpenAI rolls out its new Sora app and ChatGPT's ability to buy things for you, proving it's determined to turn the internet into one seamless, copyright-infringing shopping mall, and it's now worth more than Elon Musk's SpaceX.The ensuing boredom demands new media, though the pacing is terrible in everything: Slow Horses Season 5 and Human: Neanderthal Encounters are great, but even the original Matrix and Frankenstein trailer (by Guillermo del Toro) feel slow, confirming the Princess Bride litmus test. MXV's Riot Fest photos were rad, and Disney lost 1.7M subs after suspending Kimmel, which is why YouTube Music is testing AI hosts (who will only be wrong), and the Pivot Tour is happening. Our Apps & Doohickeys department confirms security is an afterthought: macOS 26 unlocked the Journal app, but the smart glasses race is fully on, and Logitech's new keyboard can be recharged by any light (finally, tech that works!). Amazon Fire TV is expected to ditch Android for Linux, Meta introduced the AI-filled Vibes feed, and Tile trackers were found to have a stalking flaw—a fact only slightly more depressing than the swift failure of the Neon call-recording app and the continued existence of the Comet browser. Finally, The Dark Side with Dave celebrated the low-budget charm of Blue Thunder and the necessity of Disney Park Ride Overlays, while Dave embarked on his quest to unbox the Home Depot R2D2. We thank our patrons for keeping this beautiful noise alive and pay tribute to the amazing Jane Goodall.Sponsors:Private Internet Access - Go to GOG.Show/vpn and sign up today. This show has been flagged as Clean by the host. Hi. My name is Moss Bliss, and this is Hacker Public Radio. This is my 3rd HPR solo podcast, and you can also hear me on mintCast and Full Circle Weekly News most weeks. I watch TV via streaming on a Lenovo ThinkCentre M700 Tiny. I change streams and services using a wireless keyboard, from my recliner across the room. For a couple years, I was using a Logitech K400r, and it worked pretty well. Good keys, nice touchpad, a couple of extra features. It was kind of flimsy though, with lots of flex and keys popping off from time to time -- not so much of a problem as they popped back on well -- and then the plastic on-off slider just wore out. It had a raised strip on the plastic slider which served as something to grab with a nail, and it just eventually wore down. So I went looking for something perhaps a bit sturdier. What I found was a Rii Model K22. The box had some different numbers in addition to that, and the label on the keyboard also had other numbers, but the best way to find it is to look for the K22. It was a solid, mostly metal, keyboard, so I bought it. No flex to speak of, and the keys are made to not pop off. There are some caveats. The volume up-down and mute buttons are part of the touchpad, not physical buttons, and are not lighted. In a dark room, with a black keyboard and touchpad, it can be easy to hit the wrong area of the touchpad. Also, I have yet to get the scroll feature -- supposedly the right side of the touchpad -- to work properly, but most of the time I can scroll with two fingers on the touchpad. Also, and I have no clue why, it sometimes brings up a menu I've never seen before getting this keyboard. Yes, it's pretty easy to make it go away, but still... Unlike the K400r, the K22 has a rechargeable battery built in, and charges via USB-C. Also, the touchpad is significantly larger than that of the K400r. I have had no problems with touchpad's responsiveness, other than the issues already mentioned. I'm not really very good with touchpads, so perhaps I just haven't learned the features. I paid $18 at Walmart for the K400r, although currently on Amazon it is going for $39.89 with a cheaper model for $19.99. The cheaper model has fewer buttons and a few cutbacks on design features. The K400r has a 4.2 star rating, with 67% 5-star and 16% 4-star. The Amazon AI reports, "Customers find the keyboard functional and easy to use. They appreciate its responsive keys and convenient setup. Many find it a good value for the price, lightweight, and convenient to use from the couch. However, opinions differ on the size and touchpad responsiveness." The Logitech is wifi only, but it does come with the ubiquitous Logitech wifi dongle. The Rii K22 is currently $24.99, minus a 15% coupon as of this writing. It has a 3.9 star rating, with 56% 5-star and 15% 4-star. Amazon's AI reports, "Customers find the keyboard works well on all devices and has a responsive touchpad. They appreciate its compact size and good build quality. However, some customers have reported issues with missing keystrokes and keypad malfunctions. There are mixed opinions on the touchpad, battery life, and typing experience." The Rii keyboard can use wifi or Bluetooth easily, and comes with a wifi dongle. While I'm a touch typist, I don't use this keyboard for typing, so I can't comment on its missing keystrokes. I'm sure there are use cases where the Rii K22 would not be the best fit, but for my use, it is a huge step up from the K400r. The build quality and materials alone make it perfect for my use, where I sit in my recliner and use it to maneuver my browser and streams, and then toss it in the corner when I'm done. If you have a need for a wireless keyboard, I hope you will look at the Rii K22. But that's it for me this time. Thank you for listening, and I hope to be back soon.Provide feedback on this episode.

This week, we saddle up for another bumpy ride through the dystopian tech clown show. We kick off with the surveillance state's greatest hits: ICE raids sweeping L.A., a website literally called FuckLAPD.com that lets you ID cops by their mug shots, and a Norwegian tourist who learned the hard way that having a JD Vance chipmunk meme on your phone is now grounds for deportation. Pro tip: if you're traveling to the U.S., you might want to wrap your phone in lead and bury it in a cornfield. In the news, Big Balls has apparently rolled his way from Elon's Department of Government Efficiency to the Social Security Administration—because nothing says “government modernization” like a 19-year-old tech bro with a meme nickname. Meanwhile, Tesla robotaxis are hitting the roads (and maybe a few pedestrians) with human babysitters in tow, Waymo and Uber are turning Atlanta into Blade Runner Lite, and Texas wants a permit for your self-driving car. Over in AI hell, judges can't agree if training your chatbot on stolen books is fair use or just digital asbestos. YouTube, never one to miss a race to the bottom, is rolling out an AI Slop button so you can crank up the crap to 11.In Media Candy, Russell Crowe is beefing up his IMDb with Highlander, Henry Cavill is along for the ride, and Anthony Bourdain Day is apparently a thing (even though he'd have rolled his eyes at it). We also dig into everything from Minecraft movies to the sad demise of Blue Microphones at the hands of Logitech. Plus, Dave Bittner drops by to commiserate about malware, retro gaming handhelds, and why some Star Wars maps are basically porn for nerds. And yes—Windows is finally killing the Blue Screen of Death, proving even Microsoft can eventually learn to read the room.DeleteMe - Head over to JoinDeleteMe.com/GOG and use the code "GOG" for 20% off.Private Internet Access - Go to GOG.Show/vpn and sign up today. “What is courageous to me is mine. I own it. I own those opportunities.” In this episode, Nick speaks with Scott Simon to explore the themes of courage, fear, and self-mastery. Scott shares his journey from being an introvert to founding the “Scare Your Soul” movement, which encourages people to confront their fears and embrace courage in their everyday lives. What to listen for: Courage can be broken down into four levels: micro, daring, ethical, and legacy. Labels can limit our understanding of ourselves; life is more nuanced. Small acts of courage build momentum and self-efficacy. Courage is rooted in service and love, not just personal gain. Sharing our courageous acts can inspire others to take action. “When I get my head on straight and I know what my goal is for that day, chances are I'm gonna do that thing and chances are I'm also gonna do a lot of other things that end up coming my way that day.” Clarity in the morning sets the tone for momentum throughout the day Focusing on one goal creates a ripple effect of productivity Intention is more powerful than perfection A clear mind is like a magnet for aligned action When you start with purpose, you invite unexpected wins “If you start small and start now, a courage practice, which is what starts to arise is actually a shit ton of fun.” Starting small removes the pressure and opens the door to growth Courage doesn't have to be serious, it can be playful and energizing Progress feels way more fun when you're not waiting for perfect conditions Boldness builds with each tiny step you take What begins as scary often turns into something deeply joyful and life-giving About Scott Simon Scott's journey from a chronically shy, bullied child to becoming a global advocate for courage offers a powerful testament to the transformative power of small, brave acts. As founder of the Scare Your Soul movement and author of the book "Scare Your Soul: 7 Powerful Principles to Harness Fear and Lead Your Most Courageous Life" (Hachette), Scott has developed groundbreaking frameworks that make courage accessible and practical. After a life-changing panic attack at 30,000 feet led to an epiphany about facing fears daily, Scott created methodologies that have revolutionized how individuals and organizations approach courage-building. His SCARE framework and "1:1" practice combine cutting-edge behavioral science with actionable steps that have transformed cultures at organizations including Logitech, Ritz Carlton, Cleveland Clinic, Nestle, and the United Nations Global Compact. A TEDx speaker and co-founder of a happiness incubator, Scott has dedicated his life to showing how small acts of courage can compound into extraordinary change. His unique combination of vulnerable storytelling, scientific insight, and practical application has made him a sought-after speaker for organizations seeking to build more courageous, innovative cultures. https://www.scareyoursoul.com/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/scareyoursoul/ https://www.instagram.com/scareyoursoul Resources: Check out other episodes about courage.
