The top of the 9 by 13-inch print starts boldly with the state name NEBRASKA and underneath it is spelled also in braille. Underneath the word NEBRASKA is the entire state outline of Nebraska exactly like a map. The only difference from a map is on the left side of the state there's a white cane instead of a straight line and on the northwestern border there is another white cane instead of a line. At the end of the strap of the white cane, the map continues along the river as it naturally would. The river continues all the way down to the southeast border of the state. In the middle of the west side of the state are the historic rolling sand hills, which are covered by prairie grasses. These sand hills are replicated by small wavy tactile hills as a nod to this critical and historic portion of the state, which supports the cattle industry. Starting in the middle to the right side of the print are three huge stalks of corn. My name is Moss Bliss. I'm a podcaster. This is technically my 2nd HPR podcast, but as the first one was unintentional AND back in 2019, I can start fresh. I don't know much of anything. I'm a Linux user, about the same way most people are Windows users. I have gotten more technical over the past few years largely due to being a regular on various Linux podcasts. I don't have sufficient education to be hired in computers (although I've tried several times), and I did spend a few years in radio back in my youth. So what do you have to know to become a podcaster? Almost nothing. Just so long as you have a computer, an Internet connection, and a microphone. (For some shows, you may need a webcam.) I got into podcasting by asking questions. I tried for almost 2 years to get Chris Fisher at Jupiter Broadcasting to co-feature me, with zero experience, on a podcast about using Linux desktops. It never happened. So when in 2018 Rob Hawkins asked for new hosts to take over mintCast, I was one of the first 10 or so people to apply, and one of 6 who eventually stuck with it. All I had was a computer, an Internet connection, and a Blue Yeti microphone my little sister gave me. Within a few months, I started another podcast, Distrohoppers' Digest with Tony Hughes. And a couple years later, I was asked to take over Full Circle Weekly News. Apparently some people like my voice. Since starting my little mini-career in podcasting, I have probably more than doubled what I know about Linux. I'm not all that scared of the Terminal anymore... Some microphones are pretty bad, and my Blue Yeti was the worst one on the show when I joined mintCast. In about a year, I found a very inexpensive CAD Audio U29 USB mic, currently $20 at Amazon, and that worked pretty well. Some time after taking on Full Circle Weekly News, the magazine bought me a Samson Q2U ($60), which I'm still using. I love this mic, as it can be used either as a USB mic or plugged into a sound box for even better audio. When I started, I had a T430 laptop and the Blue Yeti microphone. My listeners and co-hosts have made my life better with new and used equipment I could never have afforded on my own, including laptops, Raspberry Pis, modems, routers, headphones, and even a sound box. My current setup includes a 2016 Lenovo ThinkCentre M600 Tiny, which cost me under $200 on eBay, a Focusrite Solo sound box (a gift from a friend), a WavLink ST336A external goodies box (also a gift), and an old Dynex 26" TV I use as a monitor I paid $15 for locally. I have a boom arm for my microphone, which is made by Neewer and costs $15 on Amazon. My keyboard is a Fellowes Microban Natural, which I need as a trained touch typist. And I put all this stuff on a little rolling computer desk, which I bought used locally for $25. The only software I use is Audacity, and I didn't need to know any more than the basics. If you're part of a team, such as mintCast, you aren't even required to do any audio editing, although if you know your way around Audacity you will find your skills very welcome. If you want to start podcasting, have the equipment, contact Ken (Note: I misspoke in the audio and said Ronnie where I meant Ken) and do something here at HPR, which is a fairly low entry bar, or you might contact long-running shows such as mintCast. Participation and commitment are usually all that is required. OK, so maybe you want to do more than produce an HPR show or join mintCast. You have your own idea and you want to get it out there, your own personal podcast. This is where it gets a little more detailed. If you already have the information you need, you can stop the podcast here, but... First, you'll need a website or blog (if you're really broke, there are free WordPress sites available at wordpress.com, or you could use the dreaded Google blogs (blogger and blogspot). Other than that, you'd have to register a domain name, find a webhost, and write a website, some of which can be cheap (or not!). Then you have to find a way to stream your podcast. Google has closed Feedburner, but there are some paid places like Red Circle you can get for not much bread. Those will probably help you stream your podcast to places like Apple Music, Archive.org, Spotify, etc. But if you want help from me, I'm already lost. mintCast is handled by Bill H., Distrohoppers' Digest is handled by Dale M., and my Full Circle Weekly News is uploaded to Ronnie for publication. Or maybe you want to do it with a few friends, and they can't cram themselves into your bedroom to do that. In that case, you should explore using Discord, Jitsi, VDO.ninja, or (sizzle preserve us!) Zoom. Everyone will need to record their own part of the stream, and you'll need someone who knows Audacity well enough to edit a few (or several) streams together. Maybe you want to post it on YouTube. If you want both a video and audio podcast, someone will have to learn OBS and Audacity, and if you want the video podcast to be edited, have fun learning one of the many video editors out there (you might start with KDEnlive). For more information on streaming, you'll need to get someone else to make an HPR podcast on the subject. Way over my head. I hope this little show has pushed a few of you into wanting to try your hand. It doesn't take much, or it takes a whole lot, depending on what you want to do, and your future listeners will thank you. My listeners have certainly shown me lots of thanks.

I loved the natural banter between the two. What I Thought Could Use Some PolishingThe intro where you sing the intro is somewhat "Wayne's World, Pary On, Excellent." Depending on the goal of the show this might fit, but if you're trying to make a professional impression, maybe have a friend do some voice-over and buy a $5 track from Tunereel and blend the two. There is a hum in the background. Either turn something off or use something like the noise reduction in Hindenburg Pro. Some people leave the ums in, and some people (me) will remove the "low-hanging" ums. For me, it makes you sound more confident and prepared.Just a bit more planning to introduce the topic, and the book. If you're using one mic, go buy a second one (I like the Samson Q2U, and if needed a Podtrak P4 to record you, and then edit in software later). It just sounds a little 'bommy" like you're in a cave or fishbowl.I didn't hear an obvious benefit in your show, and for the record, I need to add one to this show. I say you get an honest first impression (so you can.....) I need to add that. The Goal Of This ShowThis show aims to help you make the best episodes and grow your downloads. Sus magestades han tenido a bien este año actualizar mi equipo de podcasting oficial. Paso del Samson Q2U a este micrófono profesional de RØDE, con su brazo a juego. Personalmente, noto bastante el salto de calidad, pero sobre todo el de comodidad y opciones.
In the realm of podcasts, the significance of impeccable audio quality is inseparable from the overall success of a show, standing as a critical companion to compelling content. While riveting discussions, insightful interviews, or captivating narratives are the lifeblood of any podcast, the quality of the audio delivery is what ensures that this content is not only heard but truly experienced by the audience. A podcast with superior audio quality enhances listener engagement, offering a seamless and immersive experience that fosters a deeper connection between the content and the audience. Clear, crisp audio not only prevents listener fatigue but also serves as a testament to the professionalism and dedication of the podcast creators. In a medium where auditory engagement is paramount, the harmonious marriage of outstanding audio quality and compelling content becomes the linchpin for a podcast's resonance and longevity in the ears and hearts of its audience. Invest in a Good Microphone: A quality microphone is essential for clear and crisp audio. Microphones like the Samson Q2U or Audio-Technica ATR2100x are popular choices for beginners. These XLR/USB microphones offer even better sound quality and are preferred by more advanced podcasters. Use Pop Filters and Windshields: Pop filters reduce plosive sounds (like "p" and "b" sounds) and windshields help minimize background noise and wind interference. Both can be attached to your microphone to improve overall sound quality. Select the Right Recording Environment: Choose a quiet and controlled environment for recording. Avoid spaces with excessive background noise or echo. Consider using blankets, pillows, or acoustic panels to dampen sound reflections. Position Your Microphone Correctly: Experiment with microphone placement to find the optimal position. Generally, a few inches away from your mouth and slightly off-center can reduce plosive sounds and capture your voice effectively. Use Audio Editing Software: Post-production is essential for refining your podcast's sound. Use audio editing software (e.g., Audacity, Adobe Audition) to clean up background noise, eliminate pauses, and enhance overall audio quality. Normalize and Equalize Your Audio: Normalize the volume to ensure consistent levels throughout your podcast. Additionally, use equalization (EQ) to adjust the balance of frequencies, making your voice more clear and natural. Pay attention to bass and treble levels. Employ Noise Reduction Techniques: Use noise reduction tools in your audio editing software to eliminate background noise and hum. Be cautious not to overuse these tools, as they can sometimes degrade audio quality. Remember, achieving great sound quality is an iterative process. Regularly listen to your podcasts, gather feedback, and make adjustments as needed. Consistency in sound quality contributes to a more professional and engaging podcast. Thanks so much for listening, I really appreciate it so much. If you need any help with your podcast, feel free to reach out. What is your biggest challenge? I get many questions about all facets of podcasting. Today we are going to overcome a variety of listener challenges. Cathy wants to know how long her podcast should be. Behiye is stuggling with echo in the audio. Dave just wants to get started. And Kate's challenge is getting clients. If you have a challenge with your podcast journey, you can always email me at Coach@PodcastTalentCoach.com. I would love to help you overcome that challenge right here on the show. HOW LONG Cathy's challenge: How long should my podcast be? There is not such thing as too long, only too boring. My radio coaches have told me that for decades. It is true in every area of life. Have you ever been in a conversation wondering if it will ever end? You're wondering if there is a point to the story they are telling. That's what I'm talking about. When I was getting my architecture degree, we had to take Architectural History. Not just one, but three levels of history. If you love architecture, you love architectural history. The cathedrals, the Greek classics, the modern movement. There is so much beauty. When I took Architectural History, it was a completely different story. The professor would stand at the podium at the front of the tiered lecture hall. He would turn off the lights and turn on the slides. For the next hour and fifteen minutes, he would proceed to read his notes in a monotone voice for each slide as we took notes and sketched the building on the screen. There was no story. No engagement. Just facts in a monotone voice. To make it worse, the class was at 8 in the morning. As a college kid, that was never good. I would sometimes leave class to get a soda from the machine upstairs just to stay awake. Twice a week, it was the longest hour of my life. BROADCASTING In my fourth year of school, I took Broadcast Management as I was considering a degree change to journalism. Dr. Walklin taught Broadcast Management. Every class, he would tell us about a great station that created a unique experience for their fans. Dr. Walklin would tell stories of stations that got in trouble or got sued for something they did. But, people were still talking about it 30 years later. In that class, we got to design our own fantasy radio station. We discussed why it would work and why it wouldn't. We learned about other station launches. The conversations in that class were electric. That's the difference between too long and too boring. Tell stories and be engaging. As long as the momentum of the show is moving forward and keeping your listeners engaged, length doesn't matter. Audio host Libsyn did a study of the top podcasts on the platform. They found that half of the podcasts were longer than an hour and half of the shows were shorter than an hour. There is no magic number. Engage your audience and be consistent. GARBAGE IN Behiye's challenge: It's about reverb. Twofold need; How to avoid echo in the room from happening and how to edit it once it happened? Best regards. Behiye Unfortunately, you can't do much with audio that is recorded poorly. You can clean it up a bit with some effects. But, you can't make it perfect. Garbage in equals garbage out. I once did an interview with Natalie Merchant. It was an opportunity that came my way while I was working at a station that played her solo stuff after she left 10,000 Maniacs. Natalie was coming to town, and I had the chance to interview her over the phone. After we completed the chat and I let her go, I listened back to the audio. It was horrible. There was a lot of hiss and fuzz from the phone line. There was very little I could do to save the conversation. I used bits and pieces that you could understand, but had to throw most of it away. If you record poor audio, you're stuck with it. So, make sure your audio is clean with a test recording before you do the full show. CLEAN AUDIO CHALLENGE Once the echo is recorded, it is difficult to remove it. There are 3 things you can do to get better audio. 1. Record in a room with soft surfaces. Hard, parallel surfaces like hard countertops, tile floors and bare walls create the echo. If your room has hard surfaces, hang some blankets in front of you to absorb the sound. I sometimes hang a sleeping bag over a stepladder in front of me to help. 2. Work the mic closely. The microphone should nearly be touching your lips or chin. No more than the width of two fingers away. 3. Ensure the mic is a directional mic and set up properly. This will prevent it from picking up room noise. Use those tips and your audio should be much cleaner. JUST START Dave's challenge: Just getting started. That's what I'm struggling with. Cheers, -Dave The first step is the first step. Don't get overwhelmed by the entire process. Just take the first step. In the Winter of 2015 and again in the Summer 2016, I stop podcasting. For about 8 weeks there was no new episode of Podcast Talent Coach. Life just got in the way. We were traveling, and it cause me to miss a week. That week turned into two. Two weeks turned into four. Next thing I know, I hadn't published for 2 months. I knew I needed to get back at it. But the outline, the topic, the content, the recording, the editing, the posting, the promoting... it all seemed daunting. Where was I going to find the time. Well, I just took the first step. I brainstormed 50 different topics. It wasn't about the entire process. I only wanted to get the first step done. Once I had 50 topics, I selected 3 that really sparked my interest. I created outlines for those 3. It was a matter of taking the next step. I wasn't concerned with every step. Just the next step. Let one step lead to the next. Soon, you'll have your episode published. Just take the first step. Open the mic and start. Schedule it, and get it done. CONFIDENCE Greg's challenge: Time and self confidence are big for me. If it isn't scheduled it didn't happen and we tend to focus on the easy things first. Got my intro done that took about 5 takes now don't seem to find time for first episode and when I do I draw a blank on content. My Godson plays high school baseball. He is a big boy who plays first base and can really crush the ball. He was at bat in the first game of the season with bases loaded and jacked a grand slam homerun. 4 runs. There were two guys on base for his next at bat. He hit another homerun. 3 more runs. 7 runs in two at bats. You don't need to know baseball to know that is pretty good. He's in another game in the middle of the season a few months later. For his first at bat, he hit a long drive to right center field. The right fielder makes an incredible dive to catch the ball for an out. On his next at bat, he drive the ball straight up the middle just like you want to do as a batter. The ball ends up hitting the pitchers glove enough to slow it down. The pitcher throws him out at first. Then for his third and last at bat, he hit a long ball all the way to the center field wall. The center fielder catches it about five feet in front of the fence for another out. After hitting zero for three in that game, he tells his dad he doesn't believe he is good enough to play college baseball. His dad made a great point. He said we often compare our results to the highlights of others. On paper, Joseph went zero for three. Evaluating the game, he nearly went three for three with a home run. It was all a matter of inches. We are often our toughest critics. Speak to your younger self. Create content for the person you were a few years ago. Help that person get to where you are without all of the struggles. RESOURCES David's Challenge: I haven't started a podcast yet but have plans to do so soon. Any resources you can share will be truly appreciated. Thanks. -David There are few resources you can use. First, visit www.podcasttalentcoach.com/launch. You can find my free podcast launch minicourse. That will show you what it takes. Next, check out www.podcasttalentcoach.com/workshop. I am holding a podcast fast workshop to help a group of people launch their podcast in a weekend. Bruce came to me for some coaching. He wanted to launch a podcast around a book he had written. As we do during my podcast strategy calls, we started talking about his goals. Bruce really wanted to help the world get healthier. Our next step was to determine where he is today. Bruce tells me he purchased his microphone two years ago and has wanted to start his podcast ever since. Sometimes the learning can get overwhelming. The more YouTube videos you find, the more different ways to create a podcast you'll find. To launch, purchase a USB microphone. A Samson Q2U will cost you about $70 in the U.S. Plug the mic into your computer. Download Audacity. It is free software. You'll record your episode there. Export it as an .mp3. Upload it to an audio host like Libsyn. Share the RSS feed with the podcast platforms like Apple and Spotify. That's the basic process. During the Podcast Fast Workshop, I'll answer your questions and refine the nuances of your process. We'll eliminate the guessing. WHAT MAKES A PODCAST Gary's challenge: I'm struggling with how to actually deploy a podcast. Can I call it a podcast if I do a series of LinkedIn Lives or Facebook Lives interviewing experts offering services to my target market? Technically, as podcast is distributed through an RSS feed. It stands for real simple syndication. By definition, a podcast is a digital audio file made available on the internet for downloading to a computer or mobile device, typically available as a series, new installments of which can be received by subscribers automatically. The automatic part comes through subscription via an RSS feed. You can do a series of LinkedIn Lives or Facebook Lives and call it a podcast. But it won't technically be a podcast, because people can't subscribe and have it automatically show up on their phone or computer. To distribute a podcast, you will use an audio host. I am an affiliate for Libsyn. You can get your first month for free at Libsyn.com with the promo code PTC. An audio host is like a storage unit for your audio. And your RSS feed is like the address to your storage unit. You give your RSS feed, or your address, to all of the podcast players like Apple and Spotify. Then each time you upload a new episode to your audio host, it is automatically ingested into the podcast players via the RSS feed. We cover all of that during the Podcast Fast Workshop. You can see all the details at www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/workshop. GET CLIENTS Kate's challenge: I have no idea how to convert listeners into clients. I use the books I have written as "sponsors" of the show, but am not sure what else to do without blatantly saying in a show, "I am a brain health coach". I'm not sure why it's bad to blatantly tell people you're a brain health coach. It is what you do. As long as you serve people and give them value, it is perfectly acceptable to give them the opportunity to go deeper with you. In fact, you owe it to them to get more if they want it. I had known my friend Dave for about six months when he mentioned his book. "Whoa, wait! You have a book?" Dave says, "Yeah, it has been out for about a year now." I ask him how I didn't know about that and why he has never mentioned it. He tells me, "I don't mention it much, because I don't want people to feel I'm beating them over the head with it." I say, "Dave, you've never mentioned it. How do you expect people to buy it and benefit from it if you never tell them it's available?" To turn your listeners into clients, offer your listeners value on your show. Inspire them with the why. Then, give them a chance to go deeper with you if they choose. As long as they benefit from the first part of the show, there is no guilt in giving them the chance to get even more. I have a great resource for you. It is 7 ways to attract your ideal clients. You can download it for free at www.podcasttalentcoach.com/attract. LET ME HELP If you don't have a mentor who can take your hand and walk you every step of the way, go to www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/apply, click the button and apply to have a chat with me. We will develop your plan and see how I can help and support you to achieve your podcast goals.

Welcome to Pocket-Sized Podcasting, brought to you by Alitu: The Podcast Maker. And on this episode, we’re talking about background noise. Let’s clear up a bit of confusion amongst podcasters - the difference between sound treatment, and sound *proofing*. On the last episode we talked about reverb, and that’s very much in the sound *treatment* camp. But many folks mistakenly believe that, once they’ve stuck up some acoustic tiles, they have sound *proofed* their room. If Dave Grohl was to move into the flat next door and start playing his drums, you’d quickly find out that your room hasn’t been sound proofed at all, though. Eliminating unwanted background noise can be harder than *treating* the sound of a room, for obvious reasons. There are some low-hanging fruits, though. Getting rid of that annoying clock, closing a window, or giving Dave next door a crisp 20 to nip down the pub for the next hour. The good news is that most unwanted background noise will be too minimal to be picked up by your mic and cause any distraction on your audio. A dynamic, cardioid microphone like the Samson Q2U, for example, does a great job of rejecting unwanted sounds around you. So do your best to minimise background noise, but don’t obsess over it. Conditions will rarely be perfect, after all. And you can’t let them get in the way of your progress as a podcaster. For a more detailed look at dealing with background noise in podcasting, go to http://thepodcasthost.com/noise
Welcome to Pocket-Sized Podcasting, brought to you by Alitu: The Podcast Maker. And on this episode, we’re going to answer the question “what are polar patterns?” These are also sometimes called “pickup patterns”, and they’re essentially the settings that determine the area a mic will focus on when recording sound. To think about this visually, imagine your mic as a torch or laser. The area it shines light on is the area it’s “hearing” your voice. Most microphones you’ll come across - including the Samson Q2U - have a ‘Cardioid’ polar pattern which means they’re designed to record one person at one time. Other polar patterns include: Omnidirectional - for recording multiple people. Bi-directional, or, Stereo - for recording 2 people. And Shotgun - for a laser-focused pickup of an audio source that blocks out everything else around it. Think of a news reporter, chatting away in a busy street, but you can still hear them clear as day. Polar patterns are represented by easy to understand diagrams. For example, Cardioid is heart-shaped, whilst Omnidirectional is a circle. These are like birds-eye views of where the pattern is picking up sound. To get a look at these diagrams, and to learn more about polar patterns in general, head on over to http://thepodcasthost.com/patterns
Welcome to Pocket-Sized Podcasting, brought to you by Alitu: The Podcast Maker. And on this episode, we’re going to answer the question “what is a Dynamic microphone?”. Dynamic mics tend to be tougher and more durable than their Condenser counterparts. A Dynamic mic can be looked at as something you’d typically use in “live” environments, and rougher “on-the-go” settings. If you record live, on-location, or just like having a mic on you at all times for ad-hoc recordings, then a Dynamic mic is a great option. Most Dynamic mics only have a Cardioid polar pattern, however. This means they’re generally designed for single person use. We’re going to talk more about polar patterns and why they matter on the next episode, so make sure you’re subscribed on your listening app of choice and that’ll be delivered to you, automatically. Bottom line, though, if you’re using Dynamics for in-person interviews then you’d either need to get two, or, hold one in your hand and constantly point it back and forward between you and your guest. Dynamic mics are powered by whatever they’re plugged into, meaning the recording signal isn’t quite as strong as it would be with a Condenser. This means you either need to turn the gain up more, or, bring the recording level up in the editing phase. Either way, that’s going to raise the level of hiss in your audio. But, this is far from a deal-breaker, and often, the pros outweigh the cons with Dynamic mics in podcasting. Our most recommended mic, the Samson Q2U, is a Dynamic model, which means it’s durable, flexible, and doesn’t require a perfect environment to sound good either. That’s what makes it such a good option for beginners on a limited budget! For a deeper dive on this subject, go to http://ThePodcastHost.com/dynamicvcondenser
Welcome to Pocket-Sized Podcasting, brought to you by Alitu: The Podcast Maker. And on this episode, we’re going to talk about podcast equipment for recording multiple people, locally. If getting people in the same room together is the key for your podcast, then there are a few different options out there. On the previous 2 episodes, we’ve mentioned the Samson Q2U mic and the Zoom PodTrak P4 podcast recorder. Get yourself a PodTrak P4 and then a Q2U for each person you’ll be recording, and you’ll have a brilliant set up for only a few hundred dollars. With the PodTrak P4 you don’t need a computer as it records independently. If you’d prefer to record into a computer, though, then you could get a USB audio interface and plug your mics into that. Our favourite USB audio interface is the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2, but be mindful that this only runs 2 mics at any one time. A couple of the more high-end options if you have a bit of budget behind you are the Zoom H6 digital recorder, and the Rodecaster Pro podcast recorder. These are premium options and if you pair them with mics like the Rode Procaster or Shure SM7B then you’ll have a better setup than 99% of other podcasters out there. Of course, there’s no need to spend a fortune on your podcasting kit, so for most folks, a handful of Samson Q2Us running into a Zoom PodTrak P4 will be more than good enough. For a more detailed look at choosing the right kit for you and your podcast, go to http://ThePodcastHost.com/equipment
Welcome to Pocket-Sized Podcasting, brought to you by Alitu: The Podcast Maker. And on this episode, we’re going to talk about podcast equipment for online interviews or co-hosts. Typically, the set up here is exactly the same as if you were podcasting on your own. If you listened to the previous episode, then you’ll have heard me talk about the Samson Q2U. This works just as well for remote recordings as it does on the solo podcasting front. You’d then either need online recording software or additional equipment to link up with your guests or co-hosts. We’ll cover software in-depth in a future episode, but you can easily record calls with Alitu, which also does all the cleaning up and volume levelling automatically for you. For a 7-day free trial go to alitu.com, that’s A-L-I-T-U dot com, and check it out for yourself. Back to the equipment though - if you’d rather use hardware than software for remote recording then you might want to check out the Zoom PodTrak P4. This is a great wee podcast recorder that lets you plug in multiple mics, record online calls AND phone calls, and you can even play music and sound effects “as live” in your recordings, too. For most people, though, using call recording software such as Alitu is the best option because of its pure simplicity. But, if you *do* fancy getting yourself a Zoom PodTrak P4, they’re usually available for less than $200 on Amazon. For a more detailed look at choosing the right kit for you and your podcast, go to http://ThePodcastHost.com/equipment
What works for one podcast may not work for another podcast because their audiences are different. Think of the two female singers, Adele and Pink. The are both authentic, talented singers. One tends to stand on stage, tell stories, and perform in a dress. The other does gymnastics that include floating around the entire outside stadium. Could you see Adele flying around a stadium? Instead, know your "WHY" and your "WHO" so you can figure out your WHAT and deliver it authentically in a way that doesn't bore your audience. Plus, we'll tackle the ever-elusive topic of measuring success. I'll reveal the strategies and tools I use to track traffic and engagement and the importance of creating engaging content that keeps listeners coming back for more. Tools To Use To Help You Identify What Works With Your Podcast Instead of just linking to your website, you can add UTM parameters (this isn't as geeky as it sounds). A UTM is Urchin Traffic Monitor (we really don't care). These parameters can be thought of as leaving a breadcrumb so that when you check Google Analytics you can see where the audience specially came from. I'm currently using Fathom Stats, which are not free but are easier to read and a bit more privacy-focused. Add UTMs to a Link using the Google UTM Creator the Google Analytics Campaign URL Builder for generating URLs to websites the Google Play URL Builder for generating URLs to apps on the Google Play Store the iOS Campaign Tracking URL Builder for generating URLs to apps on the Apple App Store There are parameters you can add that will be seen in your Google Analytics. I have been using Fathom stats as they are easier to understand (it's not free, but I prefer checking out my stats without the frustration of digging through Google Analytics). Why I Like Switchy Switchy is a tool that is currently available for a lifetime deal on App Summo. Not only does this create easy-to-remember links like www.supportthisshow.com/q2u (which is my affiliate link for the Samson Q2U microphone), but it creates trackable QR codes, and the ability to set UTM parameters and save them as a template. Welcome to Pocket-Sized Podcasting, brought to you by Alitu: The Podcast Maker. And on this episode, we’re going to talk about podcast equipment for solo shows. If you’re podcasting on your own then this makes choosing equipment easy. You’re just going to need a USB mic and some headphones. I say “headphones” but even your trusty earbuds will do the trick here. You’ll use these to “monitor” yourself as you record. That way, you can hear exactly *what* you record, as it’s recorded, and pick up on any sound issues there and then. On the USB mic front, it seems like there are hundreds of quality and good value options on the market these days. This can make choosing one tricky. With that in mind, we’re just going to recommend the one we think is ideal for 98% of aspiring and early-stage podcasters - the Samson Q2U. The Q2U can usually be bought brand new on Amazon for less than $70. You can also buy it in a special podcasting bundle along with headphones and a boom arm for around $95 - which is an excellent deal. Aside from being a great sounding budget mic, the Q2U works in both USB AND XLR form, so, if you want to upgrade to a mixer or digital recorder further down the line, you won’t need to spend more money on a new mic. The Samson Q2U’s availability varies depending on where you are in the world, but an almost identical mic is the ATR2100, so keep that in mind if you have trouble getting your hands on a Q2U. For a more detailed look at the Samson Q2U as the ideal solo podcaster mic, go to http://ThePodcastHost.com/solo

Today we're diving deep into the world of podcast growth and unraveling the secrets behind creating a successful show. I'm tackling the podcast growth equation and providing valuable insights for all you aspiring podcasters out there. Whether you're just starting out or looking to take your podcast to the next level, we've got you covered. We'll be breaking down the key elements that contribute to podcast growth, sharing practical tips, and shedding light on some common pitfalls to avoid. From clarifying your podcast goals and identifying your target audience to crafting compelling content, we'll explore it all. We'll also dive into the importance of building relationships with your audience, seeking feedback, and making strategic decisions when it comes to monetization. It's not the tech. You can use a Samson Q2U or an Audio Technica ATR2100X microphone (both under 100) Figure out WHY you are podcasting (be seen as an expert, make money, get the word out, grow your network...) Figure out WHO your audience is. Get specific. For example, "widows" is not specific enough, as a 70-year-old widow is different than a 32-year-old widow who lost their partner in a war. Then figure out WHAT to talk about that will hold the attention of the WHO and inspire them in a way that helps you achieve your why. Get ready to do it for free for a few years if the goal is monetization. Less than 10% of podcasts have enough downloads to get "big" sponsors. If your show has a hyper niche topic, you might have a better chance as your niche will eliminate the need for GIANT numbers (10K downloads per episode) because you have the RIGHT people listening. Starring at your stats will not make your downloads grow. Starring at your audience will. Spend $100 on a mic and 100 hours getting to know your audience. It is a marathon, not a sprint. Most podcast promotion (social) brings in a trickle. Go to where your audience is and make friends. THEN tell them about your show. You grow your show one listener at a time. Ask your audience to share and have links to Apple, Spotify, Google, and Amazon on YOUR website (and yes, you need one). Don't promote your show until you have someone not named Mom to listen to it and give you honest feedback. Go into recording the first episodes knowing you will delete most of them. Authors have rough drafts. Athletes have pre-season. The first thing(s) you record will need some tweaking. When picking names either for your show or episodes ask yourself, "What would make the audience click more?" It's not the media host. While some hosts have easier-to-use interfaces and make promotion easier, in the end, it is your content that grows the audience. The equation for downloads is downloads = value X promotion. No amount of promotion will grow a bad show. The second Avengers movie still had a marketing budget, and everyone in the world was waiting for it. You need to promote your show, "Building it and they will come" is a bald-faced lie. Mentioned in This Episode Rode PodMic USB READY TO START YOUR PODCAST? Today I'm talking about how I made 35% more than a host read ad. The POWER of feedback, and I'm playing with a new microphone that really lets me dial in a great sound. Use the coupon code schoolofpodcasting.com/listener to save 20% Thanks for listening to episode 887 of the School of Podcasting. Your feedback is always appreciated. The Knee Jerk Reaction to Podcast Ads May Be Missing Other Opportunities I've heard the average host-read ad in a podcast pays about $25 per 1000 downloads. Less than 10% have the needed 10,000 downloads per episode to get a "big sponsor." In some cases, they may have enough for ads that pay anywhere from $3.85 - $7 CPM (boo!). On Ask the Podcast Coach, I mentioned Switchy ( A link tracker and more) from App Summo (where it's a one-time payment for life). I earned $17.20. Obviously, I'm not going to retire on that, but the show doesn't have a huge audience. When I calculated the CPM, it was $34. So, if you're getting $5 CPM with your programmatic ads, you might want to mix in an affiliate that truly fits your audience. (and buy my book Profit From Your Podcast: Proven Strategies That Turn Listeners into a Livelihood ) For People Looking to Guest On Podcasts (and not start a show), the new Rode PodMic USB is a great choice. The mic is both USB and XLR, so if you later want to plug it into an interface like a Rodecaster Duo, you can. It comes with a sturdy pop filter (the original PodMic was east to "pop." Its all-back design is cool. You can use software that has Aphex processing and tweak the sound of your microphone and then SAVE THAT SOUND into the microphone. So when you plug it in via USB, you're sound is right where you left it. It works with Rode's Capture app, so if you want to record directly to your phone, you can. (I had to use a USB C to Lightning Cable). Likewise, if your computer doesn't have a USB C input, you'll need a USB to USB C Connector. The bottom line is for around $200 you end up with a single-channel roadcaster. The Negatives While this microphone is obviously meant to be on a stand, when I had it on a boom arm it was very sensitive to any kind of tapping on the desk, etc. So, don't touch the mic or anything when recording. At $200, it is more than double something like a Samson Q2u or ATR2100X, but those don't have the Aphex processing. Don't Fear the Feedback I recently created a video sales for the School of Podcasting. I went to my newsletter and asked them to "Talk about it like I wasn't in the room." As I started implementing the suggestions, more came in (so looking back, you might want to wait or give a deadline) as I ended up making seven different versions before I loaded on the final (for now) version. It all was great feedback, and I see people time and time again release their first episode without getting any feedback. What is the point of releasing something that is not going to impact the audience the way you want them to? Overwhelmed. That's the best word to describe how most podcasters feel as they take the leap and start on their podcasting journey. Perhaps the biggest source of overwhelm is confusion about the gear needed to get going, and I remember this well from my beginning in 2015. I didn't have a pro-level setup when I began, and I wondered and worried about how I would be perceived in this new world. In all honesty, I had about $100 in gear, the biggest part of that being a $60 mic.Things have changed since those early days, and STC has blossomed from nine downloads initially to over 1 million today. The tech-junkie part of me has enjoyed being able to upgrade my gear, and those upgrades have been a process of learning and experimenting. Even though your gear IS important for podcasting, I believe strongly that the most important keys are consistency and personality–and you don't have to spend a fortune to have those elements. In today's episode, I'm discussing my tech stack, what I use now, and what I recommend to other podcasters. Join me!You'll Learn:The three-prong fork in the road on the podcasting journey: the basic starter set of gear, incremental upgrades as the budget allows, and the decision to “go all in” with podcastingWhy I invested about $2K into gear upgrades in 2021–and how I made this decisionMy current tech stack:The Shure SM7B micMany podcasting pros use this mic because it is top-notch quality; it runs about $400 on Amazon. The RODECaster Pro all-in-one podcasting studioIt gives more nuanced control of the mic and headphone sound levels. The Pro I runs around $400, and the Pro II is about $700. A less expensive starter piece that I recommend is the Samson Q2U, for about $60.The Cloudlifter CL-1 signal booster This elevates the signal from your mic to give quality sound, and it costs about $150.Mogami Gold XLR cablesThese are about $60 each and are top-quality cables. The Gator Frameworks tabletop mic standI pair this with the Rode PSA1 mic arm. It's worth it to spend more for quality because it stays in place and doesn't shift or droop.Audio-Technica ATH-M50x studio headphonesThese connect to the RODECaster Pro and give consistent sound; they cost about $190.Resources:Want to launch your online course? Please check out our free 7-Day Course Creator Starter Kit For Therapists: https://sellingthecouch.com/coursekitLooking to launch a successful podcast? Please check out our free "Using Podcasting To Grow Your Business" workshop for therapists:https://sellingthecouch.com/podcastingworkshopMentioned in this episode:If you like what you hear, subscribe to the show!Never miss an episode! Dylan Schmidt is the host of Digital Podcaster and the creator of the Podcast Newsletter. (Subscribe to the bonusfootage.co newsletter for more bars) In this podcast episode, Tom and Dylan Schmidt discuss how to start a podcast and monetize it. They recommend starting with a minimal viable podcast setup, which can be as simple as recording audio with your AirPods or any microphone you have. The next step is to think of your big idea and break it down into smaller ideas that can be used as episode topics. Dylan emphasizes the importance of understanding your listener and being genuinely interested in the topic being discussed. Tom suggests practicing your skills by reaching out to people that have their own shows and offering to host or facilitate their audience's questions. For specific recommendations, they suggest the Samson Q2U microphone for remote interviews and solo shows, which costs around $50. They also recommend hosting your show on platforms like Anchor or Libsyn and monetizing through sponsorships, merchandise, and listener support. Key Points There is no one-size-fits-all approach to starting a podcast, and it can be overwhelming, so start with the basics and build from there. Creating content requires a strong mindset, including dealing with anxiety and imposter syndrome. Setting achievable goals, even smaller ones like the number of episodes, helps to stay motivated and overcome imposter syndrome. Podcasts are a sustainable format for content creation and can attract audiences who prefer evergreen content. Don't rely on chance to attract listeners, be shameless in promoting your podcast Focus on listener behavior and recommend similar podcasts at the beginning of each episode There is a need for tools to help beginner creators market their podcasts.

In episode 156 of the Leader of Learning Podcast, I discuss when someone will know when the time is right for them to look to advance to the next level in their career. For educators, that may mean becoming a school leader. I ask the question “Should you take the next step in your career?” There are three (and maybe more) reasons why you should. First, you are unhappy or unfulfilled in your role. Next, you feel like you are ready to make a bigger impact in your organization or your field. Finally, you want to make more money or want to live a better lifestyle.
