This week the Vinyl Tap time machine takes us back to a show that Randy Bachman calls “Homegrown”. The show features music that's been written in Canada by Canadian writers and it has been been done by artists all over the world. The playlist features music by Buffy St Marie, Neil Young, Tom Cochrane, Robbie Robertson, Leonard Cohen, Paul Anka and many other top Canadian song writers. If you want to hear some great music that's ‘homegrown' be sure to tune in to the Tap!
This week we're not just giving you the story about a musician you should know about; we're also giving lessons in history, ethics, and politics. Buffy helped jump start the career of so many in the worlds of both folk and rock, but still hasn't seen her due, a story all too familiar for an Indigenous woman. But trust us, you know her music, and by the end of this, we'll make sure you also know about the artist herself. How she was acutely aware of her otherness since day one, and turned that into her creative strength and driving passion. Want to support your favorite beer drinkin’ babes? Check out our Patreon! Listen to all the great podcasts over on the Pantheon Network! Lookin to rep our swag? Check out our merch store, available at TeePublic!
The guys welcome Rosali to talk about Buffy St. Marie’s “Many A Mile” from 1965. Plenty of other discussion including moving on election day, Hillbilly Von Trapp family, the Philly music scene, mouthbow (or “twangy mouth banjo”) and John Palmes, Cockswain and “not being the only whore in town,” traditional folks songs and some of their origins, and a song that we think Delta Rae should cover. Yves Engler has been described as “Canada’s version of Noam Chomsky” (Georgia Straight), “one of the most important voices on the Canadian Left today Yves Engler is a Montreal writer and political activist. In addition to ten published books, Engler’s writings have appeared in the alternative press and in mainstream publications such as The Globe and Mail, Toronto Star, Ottawa Citizen and Ecologist. Host Sylvia Richardson interviews Yves on his newest book, “Left, Right Marching to the Beat of Imperial Canada” , they speak about the need to go beyond traditional leftist political parties and left leaning groups such as labor as the left is supposed to be opposed to colonialism and at least skeptical of nationalism. However, Left, Right shows that, for decades now, this hasn’t been the case in Canada. Music by Buffy St Marie
