To mark Autism Awareness Day, Wendy spoke to Lisa Domican, who told her about her own children, and the inspiration behind 'The Grace App', and what she feels needs to be done to support autistic children and their parents. The Grace App for Autism helps autistic and other special needs children to communicate effectively, by building semantic sequences from relevant images to form sentences. The app stores a basic picture vocabulary of Foods, Things I like, Places, Colors, Sizes and Shapes on an iPhone/iPad or iPod Touch with a function for creating a sentence that can be read together. There is also a facility for finding and taking photographs of all the other things that each individual user may need. It is a portable means of supporting the communication development of the user, wherever they go and is proving invaluable in improving vocalisations through consistency of use over time. Grace and the other children have also learned to share what they see and photograph independently, as a result of using the App. https://www.graceapp.com/

This Elon Musk-made moment of government upheaval has some business executives seeing dollar signs, and that includes Matt Calkins, the CEO of software company Appian. Calkins contends there are billions of dollars to be saved in how the government buys stuff, but reforming that process requires “the most powerful digital worker ever invented” — artificial intelligence. On POLITICO Tech, Calkins tells host Steven Overly how he thinks AI can tackle the government's waste problem, and why Musk and Washington must find a way to get along. #731B Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/731B Presented By: Yellowstone Teton Territory The West is home to some incredible bug hatches, but only a few can match the size and intensity of the great salmon fly hatch. Today, we're diving into the magic of this hatch with Justin Adams of the South Fork Lodge. We will talk about the Middle Fork, the Salmon River, and even the Grand Canyon. Find out how Justin puts a 90-degree bend in the leader to fish nymphs more effectively. Plus, he'll share the #1 thing he tells his clients and why fish on the South Fork have scuffed noses! Episode Chapters with Justin Adams on the South Fork Lodge 04:54 - Justin started as a part-time guide while working for the Forest Service for 10 years. It was around 2018 when he went all in and started guiding over 100 days a season. Fishing the South Fork Justin says the South Fork is one of the best-known fisheries in the region. It holds a lot of fish per mile and can handle plenty of fishing pressure while still producing great days on the water. You can fish for cutthroat, brown trout, rainbows, and even hybrids called cutbows. Seasons & Timing Winter (December to February) Fishing slows, but snowmobiling and skiing take over. Ice fishing is possible on nearby reservoirs. Spring (March to May) High water from runoff, but big browns are on the move. Worm patterns and big nymphs work best. Summer (June to August) The legendary Salmon Fly hatch happens around July 4th. Dry flies dominate, with fish looking up for big bugs. Fall (Sept–Oct) Low water levels make for easier wading. Brown trout start spawning, so target deep holes away from the beds. Most anglers visit in July, especially around the 4th, when the salmon flies hatch. Justin's Go-To Set-Up for the South Fork 13:13 - Justin swears by a simple but deadly setup, which is the double Pat's Rubber Legs or what they also call "two turds". He usually runs it under a mini bobber with a swivel setup, and if he needs more depth, he says he'll add a split shot. Guides also swear by the Mic Drop, a simple olive-bodied fly with an orange collar. It looks like a zebra midge but could imitate just about anything. Sizes 16 to 20 work best, depending on the conditions. https://youtu.be/QUK-if6brp0?si=CNuh5On4qwtoBGXQ Rods Justin swaps between 9 ft and 10 ft rods for nymphing. He uses the 10 ft rod (usually a 5-weight with a 6-weight line) for easier mending. Since they're mending all day, he says the extra length helps control the drift. It's all about keeping the fly line behind the indicator for a slow, natural presentation. Leader Justin builds his leaders instead of using store-bought tapered ones. His setup uses a hinge system under the indicator, creating a 90-degree rig. Why Fish on the South Fork Have Scuffed Noses During the salmon fly hatch, the trout on the South Fork get aggressive. They're actively picking them off the rocks instead of just waiting for bugs to land. Many fish end up with scuffed noses or even a bit of "road rash" from rubbing against the rocks while feeding. The One Fly The One Fly is a fly fishing competition and fundraiser on the South Fork and Upper Snake River. Anglers get just one fly. If they lose it, they're out. Bigger fish earn more points, so strategy matters. The event brings in top anglers from all over, but local guides lead the way. https://youtu.be/9ZxmTBHEqAs?si=04eovcZemagJD5h2 The Rainbros Tournament Jimmy Kimmel and his crew fish every spring in their dry-fly-only competition. The rules are simple: Topwater fish are two points, subsurface is one, and a whitefish is a minus point. Michael Keaton, Jason Bateman, and Huey Lewis get in on it. Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/731B
I'm a guy that loves to shop. Even after working in the shopping mall throughout my youth, I still love a bargain. But there's one thing I hate when looking for new shirts, pants, or shoes. It's the lack of consistency in clothing sizes. I have to try everything on to ensure it fits before buying. That makes it difficult to shop online. I hate buying things online and then having to return them because the tag says it's my size, but when I try it on, it feels two sizes too small. For years I've had a problem with shirts and pants. But now I'm having the same problem when shoe shopping... Paul L. Singer, Abigail Stempson, Beth Bolen Chun, and Andrea deLorimier As we've discussed previously, price gouging has been a focus for enforcers in the past few years, and 2025 is proving no different. In the past month alone, California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced that the California DOJ has opened active investigations into price gouging in the aftermath of the Los Angeles fires (and Los Angeles county increased its penalty for price gouging to $50,000 per violation), New York Attorney General Letitia James issued a warning against price gouging for eggs and poultry amid the national bird flu outbreak, and Arkansas Attorney General Tim Griffin sued Capital City Tree Service for price gouging allegations stemming from severe weather events in the state. This week, Connecticut Attorney General William Tong joined the fray by proposing price gouging legislation that, if passed, would put a novel spin on his state's continued fight against price gouging. https://www.kelleydrye.com/viewpoints/blogs/ad-law-access/connecticuts-shrinkflation-legislation-expanding-state-ags-price-gouging-authority-for-shrinking-product-sizes#:~:text=According%20to%20Attorney%20General%20Tong,do%20not%20also%20reduce%20price.

Boat weight classes across your fleet can be assessed against members' weights. Timestamps 01:00 your boat fleet should match the needs of your group. Many masters group 'inherit' boats but for optimal club alignment match the boats with the membership needs. Assess the current fleet - look for the manufacturer's label - serial number, year of construction and athlete weight. Log these for your whole boat fleet. Different boat moulds accommodate the water displacement for heavier and lighter athletes. Variations can be built in by lowering the deck or the saxboards. When my club did the survey we added in a "state of repair" for each boat. Some are used more than others. And the frequency of boat use - we have some which are favourites and get used a lot more than others. 05:45 Athlete weight survey All members were asked anonymously what their weight is in kg and if they are men or women. We had fallen into the habit of calling boats "mens boats" or "womens boats". This was erroneous - we had men and women in three out of four weight categories. Masters do a lot of mixed rowing and so we need boats suitable for mixed and single gender users. 08:00 Do your boats mach your membership weights? We found a spread of needs across 4 ranges of boat weights. Remember crew weights are averaged to align with the boat. 4 Sizes of boat - Lightweight 60kg boats - Mid lightweight 70kg boats - Mid heavyweight 80kg boats - Heavyweight 90kg boats 48% of our members could fit into a lightweight boat; 60% of our membership can fit into a mid lightweight boat; 44% can fit a mid heavyweight boat; and 23% fit a heavyweight. Our club is skewed to female members and older females who are smaller in height and lower body weight. This affects the fund raising, boat purchase plan and the boat maintenance plan where club resources are focused. 10:30 Considerations for purchases The resale value of second hand boats is important to consider. This is not just about the boat's age and state of repair - it's who wants to buy this type of boat. Resale values for coxless quads is high in New Zealand due to a lack of supply. Few clubs choose to buy 60kg double sculls because lightweight rowing is being phased out of schools and international rowing. 12:00 Boat builders' weight ranges Boat builders can advise what size of boat they typically build. Size inflation has happened in boat weights - classified at one weight but will fit a bigger range of athlete weights than previously. It used to be +/- 5 kg and I believe it's larger than this now - maybe 10kg range. I believe that you want the oarlocks to sit half way up the pins for the average weight of the athletes when they sit in the boat with oars squared and buried at the finish. Too heavy athletes in a boat and you find insufficient freeboard to get the oars out at the finish or to row square blades. Too light athletes in a boat and you find you have to hold your handle higher up your chest in order to keep the oars buried at the finish and you cannot keep your wrists level with your elbows in the power phase. Gain an understanding of the number of years you use a boat before you replace it. Plan a replacement strategy so you can get the right range of boats for your needs. For example, we boat a lot of quads and now have a quad in three of the four weight ranges. Champagne tastes on a beer budget - we always want more equipment than we can afford to buy!
