Christine Anu has been a part of our lives since the early 90's, in fact Em forced her dad Vincie to drive her directly to Brash's to buy her debut album ‘Stylin' Up' after hearing her single ‘Party' on the radio in 1995. Today she sits down with Em to talk about her role as Hermes in Em's favourite musical ‘Hadestown' which is currently playing in Sydney and moves to Melbourne from May 8. Inside they'll talk about how groundbreaking her career was in the 90's, the toll this role takes on her after every performance, plus a side quest about one of Em's ‘Rage and Rainbow' vagine costumes catching Christine's eye mid conversation. Em also talks about why you need to make the effort to see Christine in this show if you can, how much of a trailblazer she was as an Indigenous Torres Strait Islander woman dealing with the music industry in the 90's, plus the journey she's been on to achieve self acceptance, while navigating grief, perimenopause and so much more. It's a deeply moving chat that's bound to inspire you and make you love Christine even more than you already do. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

A Breath of Fresh Air

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 4, 2023 52:00

From Daddy Cool to Mondo Rock and as a solo artist with no less than 26 ARIA Top 40 hits to his credit as a singer, songwriter and producer, ROSS WILSON is one of Australia's most awarded, respected and well-known artists. From the legendary band Daddy Cool whose number one anthem Eagle Rock and debut album “Daddy Who?” smashed all previous sales records in Australia an astounding 50 years ago in 1971, to the 1977 formation of Mondo Rock, delivering 80's hits ‘Cool World', ‘State of The Heart', ‘Chemistry', ‘No Time', and ‘Come Said The Boy' and into the 21st century as a solo performer, Ross has never been out of the limelight. In fact, Ross Wilson is probably the only person in Australian rock music who can't make a comeback simply because he's never been away. With a career that spans well over 50 years, Ross remains one of this country's most respected and most beloved artists. From Daddy Cool to Mondo Rock, as a solo artist, a songwriter or producer of the legendary Skyhooks and Jo Jo Zep, Ross's success has continued unabated. He fronted Daddy Cool and exploded out of the '70s playing rootsy '50s sounds. He then formed Mondo Rock who surfed the contemporary scene with chart topping singles & albums from the mid '70s to the late '80s. As a solo performer and major songwriter he continued to achieve success and make his mark during the '90s & beyond with many of his songs being recorded by artists as diverse as Jimmy Barnes, John Farnham, Troy Cassar-Daley, Keke (Spain), Renee Geyer, Christine Anu, Duane Jarvis (US), Elkie Brooks (UK) even The Wiggles! His latest release in 2023, an EP called 'She's Stuck On Facebook All The Time' is a modern day tragicomedy in the blues genre. Ross Wilson joins us this week to fill us in on the entirety of his musical career. He's had an amazing ride and is as entertaining in interview as he is on stage. A must listen. To learn more about Ross Wilson head for his website www.rosswilson.com.au If you'd like to get in touch with me with a comment, feedback or a suggestion for a future guest for the show, please feel free to contact me through my website www.abreathofreshair.com.au I hope you enjoy this week's episode.

My guest today is Calvin Welch. Calvin is a drummer, percussionist, songwriter and performer. He started playing professionally as a 14 year old in his home state of Michigan USA, touring with the who's who of the jazz, funk and soul scene from the 1970s onwards. He moved to LA in the early 1980s where he continued his career as a soul/funk session drummer recording with some of the top producers of that era.  Since moving to Australia in 1988, he has had the opportunity to collaborate with numerous local and international artists including Swoop, professor Groove, Kevin Borich, Michael Wheatley, Bek Jensen, Christine Anu, Carl Orr just to name a few. One of the biggest and best voices in Australia, is Emma Donovan's. As a little kid, Emma got a heap of practice in with her family band. The Donovans were a legendary country group, and whether her uncles were pushing her to the front of the stage to sing, or her mum was plopping her in front of crowds at Tamworth talent quests, her soulful voice was honed over years of  family support and self belief. Emma would go on to form the Stiff Gins, she'd release solo records, join The Black Arm Band, then collaborate with Melbourne soul outfit The Putbacks.  Through it all, her love of music and family has guided her. From Mavis Staples, to Christine Anu, and the Koori King of Country – Roger Knox – this is a beautiful conversation about the bonds of music, family, and place. I've been chasing Miranda Tapsell to Take 5 for years. The proud Larrakia Tiwi woman has proven hard to pin down because she's been so busy making movies, starring in TV shows, and writing. Many of us first saw Taps in 2012, in her breakthrough role as Cynthia in The Sapphires. But she's also been a star of stage and small screen, performing in plays, on telly as Martha in Love Child, and a regular guest on Get Krackin', and most recently as the lead star and co-writer of Top End Wedding. In amongst it all, Miranda Tapsell penned her memoir Top End Girl capturing a particularly hectic time where she not only wrote a film about getting married, but got hitched herself. Across five tunes, Miranda takes you from her childhood in Darwin and Jabiru, to what called her to acting, and the power of seeing yourself and people like you, on screen. Jessica Mauboy is a ray of light. We met her on a singing show more than a decade ago and since then she's been flat out being a renaissance woman with a helluva big voice. I've wanted to do a Take 5 with Jess for years; she's one of those people you just want to spend time with. Her beautiful energy sucks you in and charms the heck out of you. She's also always struck me as incredibly grounded; through all of the twists and turns in her life as a pop star, Jess has kept her feet on the ground. That ground is often her home town of Darwin where, away from the cameras and stages, she can unwind with her sisters and parents. Just be Jess. Darwin is also the home of the National Indigenous Music Awards: an annual celebration of the best in First Nations music. Jess was due to headline the event, and the day before she joined me to Take 5 with her songlines. She came up with the theme; Jess wanted to talk about the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island artists who had inspired her, and led a path for her own creative life. Across legends and new voices alike, the connection Jess has and the places she takes you on this Take 5 is something else. Head to the Top End with a legend. Christine Anu is a legend in Australian music. We first met her in the mid 90's, when her debut album Stylin' Up came out and went platinum. It was filled with hits like 'Monkey & the Turtle and Party', and featured Christine singing in English and traditional language on a pop record. This was 1995, and while Yothu Yindi and the Warumpi band had paved the way, singing in language was far from mainstream. It was the beginning of an epic career for Christine Anu that includes music, film, theatre and TV. For this Take 5, I asked Christine to share the storytellers from the decade that had shaped her, the 90's. Across five songs, Christine shares stories and personal history she never has before. Her love and respect for those who supported her early on, is so strong throughout too. This is a conversation full of heart and conviction.   Neil Murray - 'Holy Road' Kev Carmody - 'Thou Shalt Not Steal' Tiddas - 'Happy Earth' Dionne Francis - 'I Know' Janet Jackson - 'Together Again'

Daisy Bindi couldn't understand why her boss paid wages to the white workers, but not to her. She was no different to them. And neither were all the other Aboriginal workers who were being treated like slaves. In 1946 Daisy decided enough was enough. She helped lead a three-year strike which won Aboriginal workers fairer pay and better working conditions. Narrated by singer, actor and radio presenter Christine Anu.
