Aunties on Air Episode 26: Celebrating May & Leaning into JuneWe have many things to honor during the month of May. During this episode we will journey through a few different topic areas. The month of May, when we celebrate our mothers, those that give so much love and care. We bring both Auntie Lisa and Auntie Lauren's mothers to the studio where we celebrate them and we celebrate the gifts they received from their mothers. Honoring moms today and always. The Aunties also lean into June, the month where Pride is celebrated! The joy June brings and our love for our GLBTQ+ relatives is strong. With Pride celebrations right around the corner, we talk to our friend Jayson Hunt, known as Guncle Jayson! Our friend shares the importance of Pride and stories you must hear. The Aunties begin the pod episode with a returning guest, Maulian Bryant. Maulian highlights the beginning of May, where we honor our Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW). May 5th each year we honor our women and other relatives who have gone missing (taken) or who have been murdered. The rates of violence towards indigenous women is higher than any other demographic group. The Aunties urge you to listen to this difficult, yet important topic of conversation, the violation of indigenous women today.Wabanaki Words Used:Apc-oc (again in the future, parting, good-bye, farewell) https://pmportal.org/dictionary/apc-oc Topics Discussed:MMIW - Missing and Murdered Indigenous People Crisis | Indian AffairsMaulian Bryant - Maulian Bryant - WikipediaWabanaki Alliance - Home - Wabanaki AllianceMaulian Bryant Testifying on MMIW Crisis - From jurisdictional issues to lack of resources, Indigenous women testify on MMIW crisis • Maine Morning StarGabby Petito Case - Killing of Gabby Petito - WikipediaNative American Boarding Schools/Residential Schools - The U.S. history of Native American Boarding Schools — The Indigenous FoundationReservation Dogs - Reservation Dogs - WikipediaViolence Against Women Act - What Is the Violence Against Women Act? , Violence Against Women Act - WikipediaMaine Indian Land Claims Settlement Act of 1980 - Summary of the 1980 Maine Indian Land Claims ActRena Newell - Rena Newell - WikipediaGabriela Alcalde - Dr. Gabriela Alcalde, author, What Your Comfort Costs UsGabriela Alcalde, “What Your Comfort Costs Us” - What Your Comfort Costs Us by M. I continue my conversation with tribal Judge Victorio Shaw. Humbolt County, on the northern California coast, is known as the place where the name Bigfoot originated and is the home of Murder Mountain, which took its name from serial killers who fled here. The 2018 documentary by the same name explores how Humbolt is the county in the United States with the highest rate of missing persons. But it does not touch on how many of those people are Indigenous. North of Murder Mountain lies the Yurok Reservation, where 33-year-old Emmilee Risling, a University of Oregon graduate and accomplished tribal dancer, disappeared in 2021. What does it mean to say that rape is not a crime of passion, but a tool of conquest? In this searing episode, Matika sits down with Chief Justice Sarah Deer—legal scholar, citizen of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, and longtime advocate for Native women—to break down the root causes of the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and People (MMIWP) crisis. Together, they trace the systemic failures—from jurisdictional loopholes and underfunded Tribal justice systems to harmful stereotypes and state indifference—that enable violence against Native people to persist across generations.Sarah shares insights from decades of research, courtroom advocacy, and lived experience. She explains why the word “rape” still matters, how U.S. law continues to reflect colonial patriarchy, and what tribal sovereignty has to do with personal safety. With clarity and care, she connects the dots between land theft, gender-based violence, and narrative erasure—and offers a vision for Indigenous feminist legal theory that centers survivor agency and collective healing. This is a vital episode for anyone who wants to understand the roots of violence and the pathways to justice in Indian Country.Learn more about Sarah Deer's work at sarahdeer.com.Educational Reading & Reports• Sarah Deer's The Beginning and End of Rape is essential reading on how U.S. law enables violence against Native women—and how we can reclaim justice through sovereignty and Indigenous feminist legal theory. MORD AUF EX – Der internationale True Crime Podcast

Nightmares of the Americas: Indigenous Tales

Send us a textThis week on Turtle Island Talk, we're bringing you some powerful updates and stories from across Indigenous nations — from justice long overdue to spiritual encounters that defy explanation. We begin with a major update in the Jeremy Skibicki case out of Winnipeg. After continued advocacy, the remains of Morgan Harris and Marcedes Myran have been found, and “Buffalo Woman” has now been identified as Ashlee Shingoose.Next, we turn to a rare win for land back: Illinois has returned stolen ancestral land to the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation — a long-overdue act of restitution. In New Mexico, lawmakers have passed a long-fought-for alert system specifically for missing Native Americans, a critical step toward addressing the epidemic of MMIW.Down in Peru's Amazon, the Wampis Indigenous Guard continues to push back against illegal mining, defending their territory with bold resistance and deep tradition. And finally, we end this episode on a chilling note — with former Navajo Ranger Stanley Milford Jr., who has broken his silence about the paranormal investigations he led on the Navajo Nation. From skinwalkers to Bigfoot to things you simply can't explain, his stories give us a glimpse into the unseen.Nightmares of the americas and the behill network are teaming up with the long hairs. Indigenous women experience violence at rates 10 times higher than the national average, yet their cases are often ignored, dismissed, or forgotten. When they are murdered, justice is rarely served.A History of Injustice From colonization to modern-day systemic failures, Indigenous women have been treated as if their lives don't matter. Her tribal name is Tumhiya, and she is from Nixyaawii country, in Eastern Oregon as an enrolled tribal member of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation. She is a two-time professional athlete, and a passionate advocate for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Relatives (MMIW). She shares her deeply personal journey into advocacy—a role she never sought but felt compelled to take on as violence against Indigenous women continues to impact her community. Kola reflects on the weight of this work, the pain of losing loved ones, and the responsibility she carries to fight for justice, not just for her family but for future generations.Through raw and heartfelt storytelling, she challenges misconceptions about Indigenous identity, the erasure of Native voices, and the way non-Native audiences often consume these tragedies without taking meaningful action. She emphasizes the urgent need for funding, systemic change, and allyship that goes beyond passive sympathy. Guided by her father's wisdom, Kola has shifted her approach—moving beyond sorrowful storytelling to empowering and mobilizing her people to reclaim their strength, resilience, and rightful place in the fight for justice. This conversation is a wake-up call to all who listen: real change requires more than awareness—it demands action.

The Epidemic of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women: A Conversation with Shannon Speed

**Content Warning: This episode includes discussion of sexual and domestic violence. In this week's episode of then & now, LCHP Assistant Director Dr. Rose Campbell is joined by Dr. Shannon Speed to discuss systemic violence against Indigenous women. According to a 2016 study, Indigenous women are 10 times more likely to be kidnapped or murdered than almost any other population group in the United States. Although murder is the third leading cause of death among Indigenous women, these cases often go unsolved and unreported and attract little attention outside of local communities. Shannon discusses the policies that render Indigenous women particularly vulnerable to violence and underscores the impact of settler capitalism—specifically white supremacy and patriarchal ideologies—not only in the U.S. but also in the colonial history of Mexico. Compounding these factors is the jurisdictional vacuum found in Indian country, where U.S. federal laws have severely limited the ability of tribal law enforcement and tribal courts to prosecute violent crimes. In order to address the deep-seated structural and ideological factors that generate and perpetuate this cycle of violence against Indigenous women, Shannon advocates for a tribal sovereignty framework informed by a concern for human rights that aims to interrupt the cycle of violence and focus on a restorative rather than a more punitive approach.Dr. Shannon Speed is a tribal citizen of the Chickasaw Nation of Oklahoma. She is Director of the American Indian Studies Center (AISC) and Professor of Gender Studies and Anthropology at UCLA. Dr. Speed has worked for the last two decades in Mexico and in the United States on issues of indigenous autonomy, sovereignty, gender, neoliberalism, violence, migration, social justice, and activist research. Her recent work, Incarcerated Stories: Indigenous Women Migrants and Violence in the Settler Capitalist State (University of North Carolina Press 2019), won the Best Subsequent Book Award of the Native American and Indigenous Studies Association in 2019 and a CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title award in 2020. She has a new co-edited volume entitled Heightened States of Injustice: Activist Research on Indigenous Women and Violence (University of Arizona Press 2021). Welcome to Nightmares of the Americas Indigenous tales, where the harrowing reality of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW) is brought to light. Our women and girls are vanishing at an alarming rate, yet their stories often go untold. According to the National Crime Information Center's data up to 2016, there have been 5,712 reported cases of missing American Indian and Alaska Native women and girls. Shockingly, the U.S Department of Justice's missing persons database has acknowledged only 116 of these cases. What's particularly distressing is that a majority of these disappearances and murders occur on Native-owned land and are perpetrated by non-Native individuals. The challenge is compounded by a lack of communication and jurisdictional complexities among state, local, federal, and tribal law enforcement agencies, making it exceedingly difficult to initiate investigations.Today, we delve into yet another heart-wrenching MMIW case: that of Kaysera Stops Pretty Places. On August 24, 2019, Kaysera vanished near the Crow Reservation. Five agonizing days later, her lifeless body was found in Hardin, Montana, in the vicinity where she was last seen alive. However, the truth of her tragic fate was not revealed to her family until September 11—nearly two weeks after her disappearance. These stories are not isolated incidents; they are part of a larger pattern of violence and injustice faced by Indigenous women and girls across the Americas. Through shedding light on these cases, we aim to honor the lives lost and demand justice for the MMIW community. Join us as we navigate the chilling realities of MMIW and advocate for change.
