One of the major events on the Nanticoke Indian Tribe's calendar is its annual Powwow. The 47th edition of the Powwow will be held Sept. 6 and 7 in Milton.But to bring the event to life again this year, the tribe needed some financial help, turning to the community to deliver $30,000 in needed funding - nearly half coming from a GoFundMe effort.In this edition of Enlighten Me, Delaware Public Media's Abigail Lee sits down with Avery Johnson, the chief of the Nanticoke Indian Tribe, to talk about the 47th annual powwow, the cultural significance of powwows and how community fundraising brought this year's event to the finish line.

Dancers, drummers, elders, veterans, and visitors gather at 3300 6th Street NW for a weekend of songs, stories, and tradition. In this episode of We're No Damn Experts, organizer Toni Jo shares the meaning behind the powwow, the significance of honoring ancestors and veterans, and how regalia, music, and dance connect generations. Whether you are part of the tribe, a neighbor, or a respectful guest, the Little Shell Powwow welcomes all who wish to listen, learn, and celebrate.

American folk magic is a broad term for a variety of traditional spiritual practices that have developed in the United States. It's often called "low magic" because it was passed down through families and communities, not learned in formal schools or from books. This kind of magic is very practical and focused on everyday problems, like healing the sick, finding lost things, bringing good luck, or protecting a home from harm.These traditions are a blend of different cultures, mainly from European, African, and Native American sources. As people from these different backgrounds lived together, they shared and combined their spiritual beliefs and practices. This led to different types of American folk magic developing in various regions. For example, some well-known traditions include Hoodoo (which comes from African American communities in the South), Powwow or Hex-Work (found among the Pennsylvania Dutch), and Appalachian folk magic. Even some common superstitions today, like carrying a rabbit's foot for luck or hanging a horseshoe over a door, are a part of this history.
