RUNDOWN Time for a post-Thanksgiving catch-up — from Hotshot's massive Bonnie Lake feast (and industrial-sized leftovers) to Mitch explaining why he avoids other people's stuffing, small talk, and social gatherings altogether. The guys 'roll' into a playful celebration of area code 360, spotlighting surprising celebrity ties: Sam Elliott's Clark College days, Hilary Swank's Bellingham childhood, The Rock's Vancouver roots, and of course Kurt Cobain — whose Aberdeen home, schools, and legacy still anchor the region. Mitch and Hotshot mourn Washington's deflating rivalry loss to Oregon, wondering what's happened to Damon Williams over the last few weeks and whether Jed Fisch's 8–4 season is real progress or just a tiny baby step. They pivot to the Seahawks' 26–0 shutout of a completely overmatched Vikings team led by one-and-done starter Max Broer, raising fresh concerns about Sam Darnold, a sputtering passing game, and what—if anything—you can actually learn from a win like that. Mitch then slips into full "Mr. Playoffs" mode, mapping out the Rams–Seahawks tiebreaker hell. Brady and Jacson join Mitch to break down Seattle's emphatic 26–0 shutout of Minnesota — the team's first since 2015 — powered by five takeaways, four sacks, and total defensive domination of an undrafted rookie QB. While the win keeps Seattle tied atop the NFC West, all three acknowledge the troubling offensive trend. The crew debates whether this defense — with Ernest Jones ascending, DeMarcus Lawrence wrecking pockets, Reek Woolen surging, and reinforcements like Julian Love near return — is good enough to carry a sputtering offense deep into January. Rick joins Mitch to dissect Washington's season-ending loss to Oregon — highlighting Damon Williams' late-year regression, disorganized reads, and off-timed footwork, while crediting Dante Moore for outplaying him in a game UW needed. They walk through the wild coaching carousel (Lane Kiffin to LSU? Will Ole Miss even let him coach the playoff?) and unravel the tangled playoff math: whether the Ohio State–Indiana loser still deserves a bye, how an Alabama loss would knock them out, and why Texas Tech's "purchased darlings" have a real shot to win it all. We travel to the Mississippi Delta and the world of Lebanese immigrants, where barbecue and the blues meet kibbe, a kind of traditional Lebanese raw meatloaf. Lebanese immigrants began arriving in the Delta in the late 1800s, soon after the Civil War. Many worked as peddlers, then grocers and restaurateurs.Kibbe — a word and a recipe with so many variations. Ground lamb or beef mixed with bulgur wheat, cinnamon, salt and pepper. Many love it raw. However it's made, it's part of the glue that holds the Lebanese family culture together in the Mississippi Delta and beyond. We visit Pat Davis, owner of Abe's BAR-B-Q at the intersection of Highway 61 and 49 in Clarksdale, Mississippi, the famed crossroads where, legend has it, blues icon Robert Johnson made a deal with the devil to play guitar better than anybody. Since 1924 Abe's has been known for it's barbecue, but if you know to ask, they've got grape leaves in the back.Chafik Chamoun, who owns Chamoun's Rest Haven on Highway 61, features Southern, Lebanese and Italian food — but he's best known for his Kibbe. Chafik arrived in Clarksdale from Lebanon in 1954, and first worked as a peddler selling ladies slips and nylon stockings.Sammy Ray, Professor Emeritus at Texas A&M University, Galveston, talks about growing up in a barbecue shack that his mother ran on the edge of what was then called “Black Town.” His father peddled dry goods to the Black sharecroppers.During the civil rights movement in the 1960s, Abe's BAR-B-Q and Chamoun's Rest Haven were some of the only restaurants in the area that would serve Black people. “We were tested in 1965,” Pat Davis remembers. “A bunch of Black kids went to all the restaurants on the highway and every one refused them except Chamoun's and my place. And everybody else got lawsuits against them.”The list of famous Lebanese Americans is long and impressive. Ralph Nader, Paul Anka, Dick Dale, Casey Kasem, Khalil Gibran and Vince Vaughn, to name a few. But the one most people talked about on our trip was Danny Thomas. Pat Davis took us out in the parking lot to listen to a CD that he just happened to have in his car of Danny Thomas singing in Arabic.“We called ourselves Syrians when we first came here,” Davis says. “And until Danny came and said he was Lebanese then we all began to realize we really are Lebanese and Danny Thomas can say it. So we're Lebanese now.”Produced by The Kitchen Sisters (Davia Nelson & Nikki Silva), mixed by Jim McKee, for the James Beard Award winning Hidden Kitchens series on NPR.The Kitchen Sisters Present is produced by The Kitchen Sisters with Nathan Dalton and Brandi Howell. It's August 21, 1982, and Dave and Milt are back in the Time Machine, swimming in the Billboard Top 10 like it's the world's most awkward pool party. Chicago is apologizing all over the place with “Hard to Say I'm Sorry,” Fleetwood Mac is politely asking you to “Hold Me,” and Survivor is still living off that “Eye of the Tiger” Rocky money. Along the way, we detour into soda-related TikTok challenges (yes, apparently Sprite is dangerous now), celebrity death news (spoiler: not good news), and listener emails that range from insightful to “are you sure you hit send on the right show?” You'll also get trivia, remakes, a live “Kids in America” cameo from Billy Joe Armstrong, and a heated swap-out session where we boot some Top 10 squatters in favor of better songs from the same era. We break down Chicago's yacht-rock-adjacent apology, Fleetwood Mac's post-breakup awkward magic, and Steve Miller's “Abracadabra” (spoiler: it's about bras). Then it's all Mellencamp all the time—his name changes, his childhood surgery, his failed acting gigs, and yes, the time Mark Wahlberg tried to rap “Hurt So Good” for reasons unknown to mankind. By the time we get to “Eye of the Tiger,” we've covered Paul Anka swing covers, the movie Swingers (which is not about what you think), and every ridiculous tangent your mother warned you about. We close with some song swaps, listener feedback, and a reflection on how the early '80s somehow made both syrupy ballads and aggressive workout anthems coexist on the same chart without anyone's head exploding. RUNDOWN Here's a wild behind-the-scenes story involving the viral CEO from the Coldplay concert — did Mitch actually reached out? Mitch and Hotshot slide into Ottawa trivia, highlighting hometown music legends like Alanis Morissette and songwriter Paul Anka. Mitch and Hotshot Scott recap the Mariners' gut-punch loss on Sunday after taking the first two games from Houston, focusing on a costly JP Crawford error that flipped momentum in an 11-3 collapse. Despite the disappointment, the M's remain in playoff position heading into a daunting series with the red-hot Brewers and their 103-mph phenom Jacob Misiorowski. With the trade deadline approaching, Mitch speculates on bullpen help and a potential return for Eugenio Suarez. Mitch is joined by Brady Farkas and Joe Doyle [Mariners No-Table] to unpack a frustrating Sunday collapse that spoiled a potential sweep of the Astros, despite strong starts from the rotation and promising moments from Julio Rodríguez. The crew breaks down playoff odds, bullpen trade needs, and the logic behind a potential Gino Suarez rental deal. They preview a tough week ahead against the red-hot Brewers and tricky Angels, with bold predictions for Dom Canzone and the M's pitching staff. MLB Pipeline's Jim Callis returns to Mitch Unfiltered to discuss how Kade Anderson unexpectedly fell to the Mariners at No. 3—despite Callis saying it was highly unlikely just two weeks earlier. He explains why it wasn't a knock on Anderson, but a cost-saving move by the Nationals and Angels. Callis breaks down Anderson's strengths, how he compares to Paul Skenes, and when fans might expect to see him in the big leagues. He also weighs in on the Mariners' other top draft picks and gives the front office high marks for its overall haul. In this week's KJ-Aren'ts, Mitch and Jason Puckett relive the viral backlash from Mitch's tweet doubting Cal Raleigh's Home Run Derby chances with his dad pitching. Mitch explains the misunderstood context, while Puckett gleefully replays clips and receipts. This episode also appears as a video episode on our YouTube channel, you can find it here: "AdamFest 2025 Panel Discussion" About the William Adam Trumpet Festival (AdamFest): The 11th Annual William Adam International Trumpet Festival will take place June 19–22, 2025, at Austin Peay State University, hosted by Dr. Rob Waugh. This year's festival brings together a distinguished roster of William Adam's former students—many of whom are among today's leading trumpet artists—for four days of inspiration, performance, and pedagogy. In the spirit of Mr. Adam's legacy, the festival offers a rich mix of masterclasses, performances, complimentary private and group lessons, and targeted seminars on topics such as jazz improvisation, orchestral playing, trumpet fundamentals, and effective teaching. Special programming is available for younger students and their educators. William Adam taught trumpet at Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music from 1946 to 1988 and continued teaching privately until his passing in 2013. Widely regarded as one of the most influential trumpet pedagogues of the 20th century, his teaching emphasized sound, simplicity, and personal connection. The annual festival ensures his philosophy continues to inspire new generations of trumpet players. About Our Panelists: Bobby Burns Jr. is a longtime member of Earth, Wind & Fire and a veteran of the Los Angeles music scene. After studying with the legendary Bill Adam at Indiana University—where he overcame early challenges to earn a degree in trumpet performance—Bobby moved to L.A., balancing day jobs with gigs until establishing a full-time music career. His versatile résumé spans symphonic, studio, and touring work, with credits including The Temptations, Tony Bennett, Dr. Dre, and Broadway productions like Evita and A Chorus Line. Since joining Earth, Wind & Fire in 2004, he has performed on major stages around the world, from the White House to the Grammys. Bobby is also an active educator, passionate about mentoring the next generation of musicians. Charley Davis is a versatile trumpeter, respected educator, and innovative designer with a career spanning over three decades. A fixture in the Los Angeles studio scene, Charley has performed with legends like Frank Sinatra, Natalie Cole, Buddy Rich, and Placido Domingo, and his credits range from motion pictures and Broadway shows to big bands and Las Vegas stages. He currently teaches at Cal State Long Beach, Citrus College, and the Henry Mancini Institute, where he's known for his deep diagnostic insight and mentorship. Charley is also the founder of Charles Davis Music Products, producing a signature line of trumpets and mutes that reflect his commitment to excellence in both sound and craftsmanship. Robert Slack is a seasoned trumpeter, educator, and recording artist with a master's degree in trumpet performance from Indiana University, where he studied under the legendary William Adam. His diverse career has included everything from orchestras and brass ensembles to touring with Buddy Rich and Paul Anka, and performing in Las Vegas showrooms with stars like Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. Now based in Los Angeles, Robert has built an extensive studio career with credits spanning film, television, and commercial work. He currently serves as trumpet professor at Azusa Pacific University, where he's been on faculty for over 18 years. Larry Hall is one of Los Angeles' top session trumpet players, known for his versatility across virtually every musical style. A former student of William Adam at Indiana University, Larry has built a prolific recording career with credits spanning film, television, and albums for artists including Elton John, The Jacksons, Earth, Wind & Fire, and Placido Domingo. His ability to adapt his sound to any musical context has made him a first-call player in the L.A. studio scene. Dr. Karl Sievers is a distinguished performer and educator whose career spans orchestral, jazz, and commercial music. A former student of William Adam, he holds a DMA in trumpet performance and recently retired as a Presidential Professor at the University of Oklahoma. Now in his 24th season as principal trumpet of the Oklahoma City Philharmonic, Karl is equally at home playing lead in jazz and Broadway settings. When he's not performing, he enjoys fitness, motorcycles, fishing, and time with family. Gino Muñoz is a versatile musician, educator, and entrepreneur with over two decades of professional performance experience, including work with Michael Bublé and Gwen Stefani. A proud alumnus and now full-time faculty member at Citrus College, Gino has played a key role in shaping the school's acclaimed Instrumental Music program.
On this episode of #LatinosOutLoud, @RachelLaLoca chats virtually with powerhouse Latina actress of Indigenous roots, Joanna DeLane. Joanna hit the big screen nationwide on March 28th with Jason Statham and David Harbour in the box office hit, A WORKING MAN. Joanna will be recurring in the upcoming Netflix medical drama series PULSE, that began on April 3rd. ABOUT THE FILM A WORKING MAN follows Levon Cade (Statham), who left his profession behind to work construction and be a good dad to his daughter. But when a local girl vanishes, he's asked to return to the skills that made him a mythic figure in the shadowy world of counterterrorism. DeLane appears as Joyce Lefferty, the wife of Gunny (Harbour), a longtime military friend and confidant of Levon Cade. The film marks the second time DeLane has worked with action director David Ayer, explaining “One of my first acting gigs was a background role in the Arnold Schwarzenegger movie Sabotage. It was very action-packed, and I remember thinking this was the epitome of an action movie -- intense but fun. When it released in theaters, I got messages from friends and family asking if I was in it. 'Yes?' I answered, unsure of how they'd spotted me. I watched it myself and sure enough, there I was—for a few seconds on the big screen, flashing my famous smile, right before the shooting began. Little did anyone realize, the film was directed by David Ayer, who unknowingly gave me my first silver screen moment. Fast forward several years later and here we are – with David giving me my next one!" DeLane also jumps into action alongside Willa Fitzgerald and Colin Woodell recurring as ER Nurse Hill on the anticipated Netflix series, PULSE. This high-stakes drama with a side of romance follows the personal and professional lives of the doctors and staff at a busy Miami trauma center. When the hospital goes into lockdown, tensions rise, secrets spill, and the ER staff must juggle saving lives while dealing with their own drama. “I've always been a fan of medical dramas, so getting to be involved in this new show was an incredible experience. Netflix is on the cusp of another hit, and the cast and crew did an amazing job—I can't wait for everyone to see Pulse,” shares DeLane. Born and raised in San Antonio, Texas, this Hispanic actress and filmmaker of Indigenous roots has been building a solid reputation for her talents in Hollywood. DeLane has proudly appeared in projects that have made significant strides in representation like Hulu's Prey, Marvel's Echo, FX's Mayans M.C., and Paramount's 1883: A Yellowstone Origin Story. Her credits also include Perry Mason, Hacks, NCIS: Hawai'i, Mrs. Davis, I Think You Should Leave, The Terminal List and many others. Fueled by her deep-rooted passion for addressing the lack of diversity and inclusion in Film and TV, DeLane expanded her career behind the scenes as a Producer. She produced the 2024 Telly Award Gold Winner for Best Music Video for Shania Twain's ‘Giddy Up', and the “Muhammad Ali” Diljit Featuring NLE Choppa music video which is currently nominated for Best International Music Video from the 2025 Hollywood Music Video Awards. Her production credits include working with numerous musical mega-stars, including Melissa Etheridge, Bush, and Paul Anka. As a creative entrepreneur, DeLane co-founded the female filmmaking community Ladies Above the Line and started the branding and marketing company Materials Makeover, sharing with other actors the practical knowledge she has gained from working in various roles across the industry. We're celebrating our 10th anniversary all year by digging in the vaults to re-present classic episodes with fresh commentary. What better way to kick things off than where it all began? Here's a look back at episode one and our conversation with Jim Peterik. ABOUT JIM PETERIKSinger, songwriter, guitarist, and keyboardist Jim Peterik is best known as a founding member of the band Survivor and the co-writer of their Grammy-winning double platinum #1 hit single, “Eye of the Tiger.” But that's only the tip of the iceberg. Thirty-five of Jim's songs have appeared on the Billboard Pop chart, including seven Top 10 singles. His first major success came when his original band, Ides of March, took the Peterik-penned “Vehicle” to the #2 position on the Pop chart in 1970, spawning cover versions by Chet Baker and Shirley Bassey. After a stint as a solo artist with Epic Records, Jim formed Survivor in 1979, penning a string of hits for the band, including “I Can't Hold Back,” “High On You,” “The Search is Over,” “Burning Heart,” and “Is This Love.” While still writing hits for his own group, Jim forged a successful partnership with the members of 38 Special, co-writing classic songs, including “Rockin' Into the Night,” “Hold On Loosely,” and “Caught Up In You.” Widely respected as a top-notch collaborator, Jim has co-written successful songs with a number of artists, including the Beach Boys, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Sammy Hagar, Cheap Trick, the Doobie Brothers, REO Speedwagon, and Mindi Abair. The long list of those who have covered his compositions includes Paul Anka, Gloria Gaynor, Tony Orlando, Reba McEntire, Larry Gatlin, Blackhawk, and The Outlaws. He is the co-author, with Dave Austin, of Songwriting for Dummies.
