Are artists making music just for the algorithm? Alex Burnett is the Australian songwriter behind music with 1.4 billion streams on platforms like Apple Music and Spotify. He has worked on no less than 30 songs that have made it into Triple J’s Hottest 100, collaborating with artists like Thelma Plum, Hockey Dad, Alison Wonderland, Dan Sultan, Hayden James, Bliss n Eso and Flight Facilities. On this episode of The Briefing, Bension Siebert speaks to Alex about what it takes to make a song into a viral hit, and how streaming algorithms change the kind of music that gets made in the first place - and what that means for the “authenticity” of songs that make it onto the playlists on our phones. As we approach Christmas, we’re taking time to reflect on the incredible stories shared on the Black Magic Woman Podcast this year. This week, I had the absolute pleasure of sitting down with my childhood sis, Samala Thakialee Cronin, the powerhouse behind MumRed the Label. Samala is more than a designer; she’s a storyteller, weaving culture, identity, and resilience into every piece she creates. From using kangaroo sinew and weaving techniques passed down through generations to showcasing her work on international runways, she’s breaking barriers and ensuring our people are not just seen but celebrated. We talked about her recent achievements, like creating stunning bespoke pieces for Thelma Plum and representing our culture at major events like New York Fashion Week. Samala also shared her powerful reflections on kinship, black matriarchy, and the strength of our mob.

Thelma first rose to fame as the winner of the inaugural Triple J's National Indigenous Unearthed Music Competition ten years ago, in 2012. Only 17 at the time, she established herself as a promising emerging talent and has since become a pioneer for Indigenous representation within media and the music industry. However, it wasn't until Thelma released her debut album, Better in Blak, that she landed her first ARIA and has since gone on to achieve great success. Today, Thelma is fresh out of two years of lockdowns, has released a new single, been announced as a face of Maybelline New York and is touring the country. In short: she's showing no signs of slowing down. From landing her big break to creating music in lockdown and why she's optimistic about the unfurling future, Thelma was an open book and an absolute pleasure to speak with! We had the pleasure of interviewing Budjerah over Zoom video! Ahead of his first international tour this month, Budjerah reveals the moody official video for his latest single “Get Down”. The track is featured on his second EP Conversations, out now via Warner Records. On “Get Down,” producer Matt Corby's sparkling, glitched-out synths give way to one of Conversations' most affecting songs, a sleek jam whose ebb-and-flow melody underscores lyrics about anxiously forging forward through one's youth. “'Get Down' is about the idea that I've come so far now, I have to keep going, it's too late to stop what I'm doing now,” Budjerah says. “If there's a way, please show me how,” he sings on the track, a spiritual plea amidst a song suffused with an ultramodern atmosphere. On the recently released Conversations EP, Budjerah reunites with longtime producers Matt Corby and Chris Collins, as well as new collaborators MAY-A and Konstantin Kersting. The EP - which features previously released singles “Talk” with MAY-A, “Wash My Sorrows Away” and “What Should I Do?” - reveals a darker, sleeker sound for Budjerah, reflective of the changes that have occurred in his life. In 2020, Australia was introduced to the spectacular voice of Budjerah: a new, homegrown R&B star. Possessing songwriting ingenuity and old-soul wisdom, it quickly became abundantly clear that, for a lot of us, Budjerah was the kind of figure we'd been missing. His acclaimed debut self-titled EP followed in 2021, he took home the Michael Gudinski Breakthrough Artist ARIA award from five nominations; performed coveted support slots with Thelma Plum, The Avalanches and Lime Cordiale, collaborated with dance music superstars PNAU and completed his first headline tour. Most recently, Budjerah won Most Performed R&B / Soul Work for “Higher” and was nominated for Breakthrough Songwriter of the Year at the 2022 APRA Music Awards. We want to hear from you! Jessica Mauboy is a ray of light. We met her on a singing show more than a decade ago and since then she's been flat out being a renaissance woman with a helluva big voice. I've wanted to do a Take 5 with Jess for years; she's one of those people you just want to spend time with. Her beautiful energy sucks you in and charms the heck out of you. She's also always struck me as incredibly grounded; through all of the twists and turns in her life as a pop star, Jess has kept her feet on the ground. That ground is often her home town of Darwin where, away from the cameras and stages, she can unwind with her sisters and parents. Just be Jess. Darwin is also the home of the National Indigenous Music Awards: an annual celebration of the best in First Nations music. Jess was due to headline the event, and the day before she joined me to Take 5 with her songlines. She came up with the theme; Jess wanted to talk about the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island artists who had inspired her, and led a path for her own creative life. This is a Man's Man's World, sang Renee Geyer back in 1974. And despite equal numbers of women studying, making and showing a love for music, there's still a vast inequality in the Australian music industry to this day. It's a story often told, but in a brilliant new doco “Her Sound Her Story”, these tales are captured also as a celebration of the scene we have (both on and off the stage). Claudia Sangiorgi Dalimore and Michelle Grace Hunder are the filmmaker and producers behind this film, which may have begun as a photography project but grew quickly as soon as they saw how large and consistent these narratives still were. Everyone from Tina Arena to Ecca Vandal, Missy Higgins to Mojo Juju, Kate Ceberano to Thelma Plum feature in this brilliant doco.
