"The more I do this, the less I want to understand where it comes from," Orla Gartland says on the pod. Like most songwriters, Gartland likes to walk as a part of her songwriting process. She'll usually listen to music on these walks, and she walks to the tempo of the music she's listening to. So if you see her on the streets of London walking briskly one day and slowly the next, you now know why.Gartland's latest album Everybody Needs a Hero is out now.

Read Isaiah 9: 1-7.1. What does the word “Advent” mean? Why do we celebrate it every year inthe church?2. Advent is often referred as the season of the “already” and the “not yet.”What does that mean?3. In what ways does this passage from Isaiah also represent the “already” andthe “not yet”?4. Read Isaiah 9: 2 and John 1: 5 & 9. How do these passages relate to oneanother?5. Why is the “Light” so important? Why do you think some people resist theLight?6. Read Isaiah 9: 6, Luke 2: 10-12 and Luke 1: 32-33. How do these passagesrelate to one another?7. How do these passages from both the Old and New Testaments reinforce theidea of “already” and “not yet” for the Advent season?8. Why do we need “a little Jesus” (baby, child) rather than a big, strong, ruthless warrior king?9. Are you willing to give “a little Jesus” to those who are struggling in life orsimply having a bad day? Why/why not?10. Do you believe a little Jesus can change someone's day, or even their wholelife? Why/why not? (Hint: think about mustard seed of faith)Reflection:Lord Jesus, you are the Light shining in the darkness of this fallen, broken andsinful world. We desperately need your Light and your Love to drive out thedarkness of hate all around us. We know that your love-light can sometimes beoverwhelming to people at first. Remind us to shine your Light gently enough forpeople to first receive it, then brightly enough for them to walk in it. Help us toall walk in your love-light together. And remind us, no matter where we are onour faith journeys, that “Everybody Needs a Little Jesus.” We pray all of this inyour holy, precious and strong name, Lord Jesus. Amen.
Read Hebrews 4: 14-16.1. What does it mean for Jesus to be fully human and fully divine? Why is thisimportant?2. There's an ancient expression that says, “He was as we are, and therefore Hewill help; He was not as we are, and therefore He can.” What does this meanto you?3. What is the word “therefore” there for in today's passage?4. Read Hebrews 4: 13. What does this tell us about our need for Jesus?5. How does the word “therefore” connect our human need with divine mercyand grace?6. Does verse 14 speak primarily about the humanity or divinity of Jesus? Whatabout verse 15?7. In what ways do Jesus' humanity and divinity help us? Why do we need Himto have both of these natures?8. Pastor Mick mentioned the “He Gets Us” ad campaign that has been popularlately. What does it mean when we say “He Gets Us”? How does He “get”us? How do we “get” Him?9. How might today's passage be a good lead-in to the Advent and Christmasseasons? In what ways do we see the humanity and divinity of Jesus duringAdvent and Christmas?10. Next week we begin our Advent series entitled “Everybody Needs a LittleJesus.” How does little Jesus (baby Jesus in the manger) reveal the humanityand divinity of Jesus and our need for him to have both of these natures?Prayer for the Week:Gracious and Loving God,Thank you for the gift of Your Son, Jesus the Christ, the Son of man and the Sonof God. Thank you for loving us so much that you would send him from the lightof heaven to the darkness of this world to put on flesh and dwell among us.Thank you for entering your own creation in such a way that you not only relateto us, but save us from ourselves. How comforting it is to know that you get us.Even more comforting is the knowledge that Jesus gave his life to pay the pricefor our sins; a price we could never pay on our own. Forgive us for the timeswhen we might take this for granted. Help us to live lives of gratitude so that wemight give you honor and glory as we invite others to know you as we do. Wepray all of this in the precious, holy and strong name of Jesus, our King of kings,Lord of lords, and Great High Priest. Amen.

In this episode, I'm joined by Jeff to discuss his long battle with mental health challenges. Jeff shares how his depression stems from childhood, living in a chaotic home environment, and how it revisited him regularly throughout his life. He describes how, after many years of struggle, he found solace in both medication and exercise, specifically running and cycling. Jeff talks about how his depression was also linked to seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and how discovering the positive impact of exercise, especially in the winter months, helped him manage his symptoms. A key part of Jeff's journey has been setting what he calls "big, hairy-ass, audacious goals." He explains how one such goal, learning to play the slide guitar and performing in a blues band, and another, cycling across the U.S. from Florida to California, were transformational experiences that gave him a new sense of purpose and control over his mental health. However, in his sixties, Jeff was completely caught unawares when he suffered a stroke, and the impact it had on him mentally and physically, plunged him back into depression. Jeff then shares how he has adapted to live after the stroke up until today. He also discusses techniques he uses to help manage his mental health, for example, journalling daily has helped him reflect and manage his emotions. This episode is an inspiring look into how audacious personal goals and self-care can help manage mental health, especially in middle age.Jeff referenced the Stroke Association in the UK (https://www.stroke.org.uk) or in the US, there's the American Stroke Association (https://www.stroke.org). If you or someone you know is struggling with depression, then general advice is to contact your doctor.

In this episode of "Everybody Needs a Nudge," hosts Dan and Keith delve into the remarkable life story of George Berg, a seasoned architect whose path from a small-town upbringing to designing health centers is nothing short of inspiring. Born and raised with his roots firmly planted in Weymouth, George's journey began with humble beginnings. Despite not being drawn to youth sports, he found his rhythm working for a precast concrete company after school. However, his true passion lay elsewhere – in the world of architecture. From a young age, George knew he wanted to be an architect, captivated by the profession's ability to shape tangible outcomes. His knack for sketching and envisioning designs led him to pursue an associate's degree in architecture and engineering from Wentworth. Juggling a full-time job as a co-op student, George's dedication to his craft was unwavering. He eventually transitioned to the Boston Architectural College (BAC), navigating work demands during the day and school at night. Amidst this whirlwind, he found love, marrying in 1993, and later expanding his family to include three children. George's journey took an unexpected turn when he became a partner in the company he worked for, putting his education on hold to steer the business through challenging times. However, his perseverance paid off, culminating in his graduation from BAC in 2000. His career trajectory soared when he was tapped by a larger company to spearhead their architectural division, specializing in designing cancer centers. George dedicated himself to this noble cause for over five years, but the onset of Covid prompted a reevaluation of priorities. Seeking a change aligned with his values, George transitioned to Raymond Design Associates, where he's been for nearly four years. His commitment to his craft remains unwavering, even amidst personal health challenges such as undergoing triple bypass surgery. Through George's story, we glean insights into the importance of resilience, dedication, and a strong work ethic. As he continues to shape spaces and communities, his journey is a testament to the transformative power of following one's passion, even in the face of adversity.
