Frank Murphy is joined by his friend Mitch Moore, who is a freelance writer.  Mitch likes to solve the Sunday and Monday crossword puzzles. Both he and Frank try to solve the Monday puzzle as fast as possible. Frank has broken the five-minute barrier but Mitch has yet to go “sub 5.”  Mitch and his wife went to Glacier National Park and Yellowstone National Park. They spent several days at Yellowstone. Frank and his wife would like to go back and spend more than a day at Yellowstone.  Frank and Jere visited Tom Kent, one of Frank's radio mentors, in Cleveland on the day after the eclipse in April. Tom died of cancer in June. On Tom's birthday in August, hundreds of his Facebook friends wished him a happy birthday, obviously unaware that he had died.  This episode is sponsored by BoneZones.com (don't forget the S). Buy books and other merchandise autographed by Body Farm founder Dr. Bill Bass at https://bonezones.com/ including Body Farm t-shirts. Contact BoneZones to hire Frank to give a presentation about Dr. Bass and the Body Farm.  Jere attempted to take two grandsons to McKay's used bookstore but it happened to be the same day as the store's anniversary. The store was overrun with fans trying to win prizes by driving to all five McKay's stores in North Carolina and Tennessee.  Mitch points out that the store used to be known as McKay Books and that in the South, people tend to add an S to store names like Kroger, Walmart, and others.  Mitch recently finished the first draft of a book. He set the book in rural Arkansas during the same time period that he was growing up there.  Frank had a poster printed using the image of an East Tennessee PBS monthly program guide that included him among some actual celebrities.  Every time Frank buys a package of 700 coffee filters, he wonders if he will be able to use them all.  The Tennessee Valley Fair asked Frank and Becca James to emcee the Fair Food Throwdown on Saturday, September 7 and the Sweet Goodness Doughnut Challenge on Thursday, September 12, 2024.  Frank used bonus points to get a free Frappuccino but rather than drink it, he saved it in the freezer. A couple of weeks later he bought a Frappuccino to earn 75 bonus points. He put it in the freezer to save it for another day and then realized the first one was still there.  Frank's grandson Artie chastised him for not saying “excuse me” after a gastrointestinal outburst. Frank started saying “Pardon me boys, is that the Chattanooga Choo Choo” every time it happened again. Frank explained the reference, which made Artie want to watch The Glenn Miller Story starring James Stewart.  Frank will be checking in the audience members at Marble City Opera's “Tenors, Tuxedos, and Stalactites” concert on Saturday, August 17, 2024. The gate opens at 4:00 p.m. and the one-hour concert starts at 5:00 p.m. Get tickets at https://www.marblecityopera.com/tickets before they sell out.  Mitch is the drummer in an ‘80s cover band called Vinyl Tap. The band will perform at Ale' Rae's, 937 N. Broadway, on Saturday, August 24, 2024 starting at 7:00 p.m. The Facebook event listing is https://www.facebook.com/events/326532536987376/  Support the Frank & Friends Show by purchasing some of our high-quality merchandise at https://frank-friends-show.creator-spring.com  Sign up for a 30-day trial of Audible Premium Plus and get a free premium selection that's yours to keep. Frank Murphy is joined by his friend Mitch Moore, who is a freelance writer. Frank saw Mitch in two plays at Flying Anvil Theatre. Mitch is also in a band called Vinyl Tap. Frank enjoyed Mitch's YouTube series, “State of Franklin,” which can be viewed here: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL-Tj30IQQQv9XbaT3cLnaMVYSZE6oeQDG&si=Yzx57FAoCzOLpWfT  Frank met a doctor who thought it cost money to subscribe to YouTube channels. YouTube uses the word “subscribe” the same way Instagram uses the word “follow.” Please subscribe to the Frank & Friends Show on YouTube for free.  Mitch and Frank are equally passionate about emphasizing that there is only one S in “Daylight Saving Time.” Frank's best time change experience happened when he and his friend Bean went on a business trip from Los Angeles to Lake Havasu City on the weekend that Daylight Saving Time started.  Frank only had to change the clocks on his oven and microwave. He wonders if his next microwave will know the time and other information by being connected to the “internet of things.”  This episode is sponsored by BoneZones.com (don't forget the S). Buy books and other merchandise autographed by Body Farm founder Dr. Bill Bass at https://bonezones.com/ including Body Farm t-shirts. Contact BoneZones to hire Frank to give a presentation about Dr. Bass and the Body Farm.  Frank enjoyed Mitch's comedy web series “State of Franklin.” In the show, Ben Franklin time-travels to the home of Mitch's character. In addition to acting in the show, Mitch wrote, directed, and edited the episodes.  Mitch has done stand-up comedy but finds improv to be daunting. Mitch was the middler on a bill at the Funny Bone in Knoxville when an up-and-coming Drew Carey was the headliner. The club owner fired Drew after three nights and replaced him with Ron White.  Frank does improv and finds stand-up to be challenging. Frank did stand-up in a contest called Host with the Most. He prepared by going to several open-mic nights to polish his material. The Backstory Michael Parisi's journey started at the promotions department of Warner Bros. in the early '90s, where he laid the groundwork for what would become a star-studded career. Listen as he takes you back to his early days of orchestrating promo gigs for the legendary Red Hot Chili Peppers on their seminal album, "Blood Sugar Sex Magik." Michael reminisces about his youthful excitement and the challenges of dealing with larger-than-life personalities like Flea and Anthony Kiedis. He even spills a bit of tea on a few borderline-outrageous stories that will make you wish you had backstage access back then. A 30-Year Perspective Fast forward to 2023, and Michael has an established legacy in marketing and A&R positions. He reflects on how the industry has evolved over the last three decades, focusing on the shift in emphasis away from live music and stage performances for budding artists. Michael passionately argues that if you can't command a live audience, your chances of making it big are slim. He elaborates on this by discussing what it truly takes to capture attention in today's digital-first era. The Current State of the Industry It's a different ballgame for emerging artists today. Michael details the unique challenges that artists now face, from navigating social media algorithms to understanding streaming metrics. However, his fundamental advice remains the same: maximum stage time and self-promotion are crucial. "It's your job to build an audience no matter how. If it's playing 50 dodgy acoustic gigs on a Tuesday night in Wesleyanne in Northcote, then so be it," he advises. Stories and Anecdotes Fans of Australian band Regurgitator will be riveted by Michael's experiences dealing with their enigmatic frontman, Quan, whose unconventional approaches to the industry have shocked him time and time again. This week, Randy Bachman turns the spotlight on women who rock! Wanda Jackson is known as the “Queen Of Rockabilly” and shared the stage with many of the top acts in the fifties.  In 2011 she released an album with Jack White of the White Stripes.  It included the song “Shakin' All Over” which was a breakout hit for Randy and the Guess Who. This week the Vinyl Tap trip through time looks at some of the other women who rocked and many who still do. The playlist includes Heart, Joan Jett, Alanis Morissette, Stevie Nicks, Pink, Pat Benatar, Janis Joplin and many others.

This week on Randy Bachman's Vinyl Tap everything is alright. Randy points out that those words have a couple of meanings… if you're concerned about someone you might ask, “is everything alright?” But, if it's a Sunday night and you're rocking to some great tunes, “everything is alright!" Helping convince us that everything is alright, this week we've got artists including The Beatles, The Who, April Wine, Elton John, Blind Faith, U2, Free and so many more. Even the kids are alright!

This week the Vinyl Tap time machine takes us back to 1970. Protests against the war in Vietnam continued. The tragic shooting at Kent State happened and Neil Young wrote the song “Ohio”. But there was good news as well…It was the year that the first Earth Day was celebrated. The playlist this week includes Crosby Stills Nash and Young, Chicago, Led Zeppelin, Santana, The Stones, Badfinger and more. And it was a big music year for Randy… the Guess Who had world-wide hits with American Woman and No Sugar so he did what any artist would do when they had success… he quit the band.  It's a rock and roll tour of 1970 so be sure to tune in to the Tap!

This week the Vinyl Tap the time machine takes us back to another big year in rock… 1969. It was the year Neil Armstrong and his crew stepped out onto the surface of the moon. Public Broadcasting began in the US and a computer network system called ARPNET was created and would become the basis of the internet. The Beatles gave their final public show in London  Some other big music events took place including a gathering of over three hundred thousand for a festival in Woodstock, New York. Our playlist this week incudes some of the acts from Woodstock… Jimi Hendrix, Crosby, Stills Nash and Young, Creedence, The Who, Sly and the family Stone and many others. So, make one small step and be sure to tune in to the Tap!

This week the Vinyl Tap journey takes us to the deep south. Its 1970 and the new decade opened with a new sound.  The Allman Brothers rocked onto the music scene with a guitar-driven band that drew its influence from rock and roll, country and southern blues. More and more bands began to fill the airwaves with what we know as southern rock and the playlist this week includes some of the best… Lynyrd Skynrd, Molly Hatchet, 38 Special, ZZ Top, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, BTO and more. So, for a musical trip through the deep south and beyond be sure to tune in to the Tap!

Wanda was 82 years old. This week, the Vinyl Tap time machine lands in another important year in the growth of rock and roll.  It's 1968. There was lots happening in the world… not quite a time machine but Boeing did launch the first 747 jumbo jet. TV history was made when Star Trek's James Kirk shared an on-screen kiss with Lieutenant Uhura. The winter Olympics were held in France and broadcast for first time on colour TV and the Beatles released the White Album. Other musical artists of note that year included Cream, The Zombies, Traffic, The Kinks, Bob Seger, Steppenwolf and the Rolling Stones.  We'll here them plus many others this week so jump on your magic carpet for a ride back to 1968 and be sure to tune in to The Tap!

The Vinyl Tap time machine is still in 1967 as we feature more of the great music made that year. As Randy Bachman reminds us,  1967 and the “summer of love” was a time of change.  And a bit of science fiction as well.   Montreal hosted the world for Expo '67.  The first issue of Rolling Stone magazine came out.  The Beatles created Sgt Pepper. The first human heart transplant was performed. Woodstock was still two years away.  So was the Apollo moon landing. And the music was great.  We'll from The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Traffic, Jefferson Airplane, The Moody Blues, The Guess Who and many others. Come along for a magical mystery tour when you tune in to The Tap!

This week, the Vinyl Tap time machine takes us way, way back to 1967 and the summer of love. A movement began that year that would take the world by storm.  As many as one hundred thousand hippies gathered in the Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco and began a culture of free love and free spirit… kind of free everything in fact. Musicians quickly added a soundtrack to what was going on and most of the key players appeared at the Monterey Pop Festival. On the Tap this week we'll hear from Cream, The Who, The Beatles, The Doors, Buffalo Springfield, Hendrix and many more. Turn on and drop out if you want, but be sure to tune in to The Tap!

The Vinyl Tap tour through the decades continues with more of the best music from 1966. It was a big year… Star Trek began on TV and the Beatles played their last public show in San Francisco 56 years ago! Some of the great music we'll hear this week comes from the Beatles, the Hollies, the Kinks, the Yardbirds, Loving Spoonful, and of course from Canada, a couple of tidbits from the early Guess Who. We're going back again to 1966 where it is still summer in the city so be sure to tune in to the Tap.

Vinyl Tap podcast with Randy Bachman

This week Randy begins something new on Vinyl Tap. Over the next weeks the Vinyl Tap time machine will travel through the years and bring us some of the greatest hits and some of Randy's favorites from year to year.   The playlist is sure to bring back great memories as we begin in 1966, right at the start of what we now call classic rock.    Music from Cream, The Stones, Beatles, Beach Boys, Byrds, Guess Who and many more. Hold on tight for a ride you won't forget when you tune in to the Tap.

Vinyl Tap podcast with Randy Bachman

This week on Vinyl Tap everything is alright. Those words have a couple of meanings… if you're concerned about someone you might ask “is everything alright”? But if it's a summer night and you're rocking to some great tunes, “everything is alright”! Helping convince us that everything is alright this week we've got artists including The Beatles, The Who, April Wine, Blind Faith, U2, Free and so many more. Even the kids are alright so be sure to tune in to The Tap!

Music and more with Adam Nutter

On this episode Adam gets excited about discovering the revelation of Vinyl. Being very late to the party and having only just bought a turn table, its exciting to explore all the records that made us fall in love with music in an exciting new (to Adam) format.

Vinyl Tap podcast with Randy Bachman

This week the Vinyl Tap time machine is heading to the other side of the world for a stop in Australia.   AC/DC is probably the best-known rock and roll band from down under.  They've been blasting their three-chord rock to world for nearly fifty years.  But they are definitely not alone.  Australians embraced rock and roll right from the beginning.  It wasn't long before a unique Oz music scene developed. This week's playlist features some of those acts including the Easybeats, The Bee Gees, Rick Springfield, Men at Work, INXS, Midnight Oil and others including Canadian artists who had success down under. So, for those who are about to tune in to the Tap, we salute you!

Vinyl Tap podcast with Randy Bachman

This week on Vinyl Tap we'll turn our attention to the south.  After a whole month of great Canadian music the time machine is set for Texas.  The Texas Jam ran from 1978 to 1988 on the July 4th weekend.  The Jam featured some of the best rock and roll out of the Longhorn State as well as many touring bands.  BTO played the Jam in 1986 and I've got a great story about that gig.

Passion, determination, dedication, focus, challenge. These qualities have remained consistent throughout Randy Bachman's lengthy and remarkable career. He is a legendary figure in the music world through his talents as a guitarist, songwriter, performer, record producer and mentor. As founder of two formidable rock bands, The Guess Who and Bachman-Turner Overdrive, Randy has accrued over 120 platinum, gold and silver album/singles awards from around the world. His songwriting has garnered the coveted #1 spot on radio play lists in over 20 countries and his total record sales exceed 40 million albums and singles.Randy's distinctive brand of guitar-driven, no-holds-barred hard rock is instantly recognized worldwide.Randy's music is a veritable soundtrack of the last forty years of popular music. “These Eyes”, “Laughing”, “Undun”, “No Time”, “American Woman” and “No Sugar Tonight” with The Guess Who all resonate with the Bachman touch. Between 1969 and 1970, The Guess Who sold more records than the entire Canadian music industry combined with the Bachman-Cummings songwriting team becoming the most celebrated partnership in Canadian music to that point. The Guess Who brought Randy's music to North America. He followed that with “Let it Ride”, “Roll on Down The Highway”, “Takin' Care of Business”, “Looking Out For #1”, “Hey You” and “You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet” with Bachman-Turner Overdrive, taking his name and hit-making abilities worldwide. In 1974, BTO was the biggest-selling recording act in popular music.Randy also stands in rarified air as a member of a very exclusive handful of artists who have topped the charts in two different bands: “American Woman” (co-written by Randy) with The Guess Who and “You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet” (composed wholly by Randy) as leader and singer with Bachman-Turner Overdrive. In addition, “No Sugar Tonight”, written by Randy, was a double A-sided #1 hit paired with “American Woman”.Randy's songs have been recorded by a wide spectrum of artists including Lenny Kravitz' version of “American Woman” which topped the charts 29 years after the original, as well as appearing on television and movie soundtracks including Seinfeld, The Simpsons, American Beauty, and Austin Powers 2. He has been animated on the SIMPSONS and is listed in the Guinness Book of Worlds Records.Randy Bachman's name is synonymous with the guitar. The instrument is an extension of who he is and he is rarely far away from a guitar. His playing has earned the respect and admiration of the finest guitar practitioners, many of whom have sought him out both as a kindred spirit and collaborator. Since first picking up the instrument in his teen years in Winnipeg, Canada and teaching himself to play, the guitar has been Randy's first love. He was fortunate early on to be mentored by one of the greatest guitar players of all time, the legendary Lenny Breau. Those tutorials from Breau served Randy well allowing him to develop a versatility that is the envy of his contemporaries. In 2006, Randy paid tribute his mentor by recording his acclaimed Jazz Thing album which, through digital technology, allowed Randy to duet with hero. To honour Lenny Breau's legacy, Randy founded Guitarchives Records whose goal has been to rescue and release otherwise lost Breau recordings.Randy's career has been built on his indomitable drive and dedication to music. Never content to rest on his stellar laurels, Randy has consistently reinvented himself. He has released albums, in a variety of genres and styles throughout his career, from hard rock to blues, country, and jazz.As host of the top-rated CBC and Sirius XM radio program Randy Bachman's Vinyl Tap, Randy's listeners each week worldwide number in the millions. He can also add best-selling author to his numerous list of accomplishments, having penned both Vinyl Tap Stories and Tales From Beyond The Tap.

Happy Birthday, Canada! up next in my salute to some of my favourite Canadian artists is Randy Bachman (pictured here with fellow Winnipeg legend Daryl B). Photo taken at CFUN/Vancouver by Dee Lippingwell. Talk about a musical prodigy: Randy won a singing contest at age 3 and by 5 he was playing the violin! Randy is quoted by John Einarson in the Winnipeg Free Press: "Winnipeg in the '60s was like that movie That Thing You Do, only multiplied by a thousand. It was so exciting and alive with music." In 1962 Randy hit it big with Chad Allan and the Expressions "Shakin' All Over". Early radio pressings of the single were simply labeled "Guess Who?" and that's where the name originated. Between 1969 and 1970, The Guess Who sold more records than the entire Canadian music industry combined. My friend Bruce Allen took an interest in Randy's fledgling band Brave Belt, which morphed into Bachman-Turner Overdrive. BTO became one of the most successful bands of the Seventies. The Guess Who and BTO deserve a place in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame! In this 1982 interview with Terry Moore, Randy reflects on his success and putting fame into perspective; the downside of music industry promotion; life after music. Randy hosts CBC and Sirius XM radio program Randy Bachman's Vinyl Tap and he's authored two books: Vinyl Tap Stories and Tales From Beyond The Tap. Sony Music is releasing "The Bachman-Cummings Collection" limited edition box set, and Randy and Burton are planning to celebrate the music of the Guess Who and BTO with a rescheduled North American reunion tour! "Together Again - Live In Concert" kicks off next summer. They'll be at Rogers Arena here in Vancouver June 15, 2021. Check bachmancummings.ca for details. Coop joins me to discuss a 10 minute stand up comedy set I performed last night at a small bar in Preston, England. The show didn't go well but there is always something to be learned, and it's all part of the process of getting better. This podcast is ideal if you're looking to do stand up comedy for the first time or if you're just interested in how it all works.... or, as was the case last night, how it all doesn't work.

Live, all-vinyl set at Vinyl Tap in Philly, PA, January 19, 2019. Many thanks to Duiji and the whole Vinyl Tap crew! I threw some pretty random records in a bag and took the New Jersey Transit train down to the 215 on a chilly Saturday, but we warmed the place up.

PART ONE Scott and Paul reveal the winner of their latest contest. Find out who's getting an autographed copy of Steve Dorff's memoir! PART TWO - 02:39 mark Is "Stutter Rock" a thing? The guys connect some dots and dig into a surprisingly pervasive trend in music history. PART THREE - 8:05 mark Scott and Paul's origin story - including a particularly disappointing night backstage at a Guess Who reunion show PART FOUR - 12:52 mark Randy stops by Songcraft World Headquarters to talk about his new George Harrison tribute album; how The Guess Who got its name by accident; his Alex Trebek connection; how he bluffed his way into musical success; why his approach to songwriting is all about borrowing and re-purposing; the '60s band he thought was even better than The Beatles; what he spent all his money on instead of drugs; the Bachman-Turner Overdrive hit that ripped off an Antonín Dvořák classical piece only to then be ripped off by The Doobie Brothers; and why one of his biggest hits was an inside joke with his brother that was never intended to be heard by the public. ABOUT RANDY BACHMAN As the co-founder, guitarist, and primary songwriter of two legendary classic rock bands, Randy Bachman has earned over 120 gold and platinum records. After landing a handful of Top 10 singles in Canada, The Guess Who scored a string of Bachman-penned hits, beginning with “These Eyes,” a Top 10 single Randy wrote with bandmate Burton Cummings. They went on to find success with “Laughing,” “Undone,” “No Time,” and “American Woman,” which was the first single by a Canadian band to hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The B-side, “No Sugar Tonight,” claimed the #1 spot soon after. Randy walked away from The Guess Who at the height of the band’s success, recording an instrumental album and forming the group that would come to be known as Bachman-Turner Overdrive. Like Paul McCartney before him and Dave Grohl after him, Randy is one of only a small handful of artists to find major success with more than one band. During his stint with BTO he wrote their biggest hits, including “Let it Ride,” “Takin’ Care of Business,” “Hey You,” and “You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet,” which was an international hit that topped the charts in multiple countries. Bachman has reunited in various configurations with his Guess Who and BTO bandmates over the years, in addition to collaborating on various projects with artists ranging from fellow Canadian rock legend Neil Young to his son, Tal Bachman, who is best known for the 1999 hit “She’s So High.” Randy is a best-selling author, a member of the Musicians Hall of Fame, the host of the Vinyl Tap radio show, and a continually prolific songwriter, musician, and recording artist. His most recent album is By George – By Bachman, a tribute to the songs of George Harrison.
