Tom Cochrane to become first AFL player with Tourette syndrome, in this edition of The Conversation Hour we discuss what this means for people living with the condition. We also look at the role of social media influencers on the campaign trail, what underpins the increase in measles outbreaks and ask whether the climate has taken a bit of a back seat in this years budget.
They built their reputation playing live gigs around the North—from the Southeast Alaska State Fair, to the iconic 98 Hotel, to Folk on the Rocks. Next up, it's opening for Tom Cochrane at his April 5 show in Whitehorse. But Cows Go Moo is no stranger to the studio, either. In May 2024, life took the band's six teenage members down two highways (the Alaska and North Klondike) to their second recording session at Green Needle Records. In this episode, you'll hear the Cows and hard workin' producer Jim Holland workin' hard to rock hard on a hard rock track that really works. Jim asked the band for everything but “more cowbell”… and they udderly delivered. The finished product is Cows Go Moo's most recent self-composed single, “The Forgotten.” (You can call it “James Hetfield Takes a Bath with His Guitar and Amp,” if you prefer.)A story about Cows Go Moo also appears in the spring 2025 issue of YUKON | North of Ordinary magazine. Way back in my 1990's radio days, I got to work alongside Terry Evans. He is the same Terry Evans that wakes Edmontonians up on K97. Terry had a 5 year stint where in worked at the Bear together, we later worked against one another on competing radio stations. He loves music and has been a champion of the Edmonton music scene since he arrived there from British Columbia in the 1980's. One of the things I like about Terry is that he is unwavering. One of the things I dislike about Terry is that he is unwavering. He was unwavering about starting a podcast - until his position shifted "Reluctantly". Earlier this year, Terry launched his new show Reluctantly, and what follows is one of our famous "Feed Drops" where we feature an episode from another show we know you will enjoy. Terry recorded an episode a few months back with comedian Craig Gass, who has appeared on TV shows like King of Queens, and Sex in the City. Craig tells a few stories from his time writing jokes on the Howard Stern show which I know you will find interesting. If you like this episode, you will find value in Terry's other interviews with former Edmonton Oiler Kevin Lowe, Musicians Darby Mills from the Headpins, and Tom Cochrane from Red Rider. We featured Terry on this podcast way back in 2016... you can check that out here. In the 80s, the idea of special acoustic or unplugged albums and shows became a new medium that continues to today. Most think that Mtv started the movement in 1989 with their series called “unplugged”, however, most rock bands were playing acoustic renditions of their songs on radio when they would do in-town promotions long before then. This week we are celebrating bands that can re-imagine their songs with acoustic instruments and still rock! We are pulling the plug… and gasping for air guitars! What's this InObscuria thing? We're a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. Mtv started a series in 1989 called “unplugged”, and almost every mainstream relevant act started producing acoustic albums or versions of their songs. This week we listen to some artist that you may have never considered as having acoustic interpretations of their songs.Songs this week include:The Struts – “Fallin' With Me” from Unplugged At EastWest - EP (2023)Kingdom Come – “Janine” from Live & Unplugged (1998)Helloween – “Future World” from Unarmed (2009) Wednesday 13 – “Scary Song” from Undead Unplugged (2014)Corey Taylor – “Lunatic Fringe” from CMFB… Sides (2022)Courage My Love – “For Now” from For Now (Acoustic Sessions) (2012)MSG – “Lights Out” from Unplugged Live (1993) Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://x.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/inobscuria/og-shopCheck out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/

What if a mixtape could change your entire perspective on summer? Join Matt and Samer on a nostalgic journey through sun-soaked tunes that might just make even the biggest summer skeptics (like Samer) start to appreciate the season. Kicking off with the fan-favorite "Waiting on the Summer" by VHS Collection, recommended by @mindys_memories, we explore how a perfect blend of music and memories can transform the hottest months. Listen as we reflect on how our Instagram community shaped this mixtape and the joy of experiencing summer through different life stages. From the timeless beat of Weezer's "Island in the Sun" to the infectious energy of Tom Cochran's "Life is a Highway," our conversation is filled with musical nostalgia and fun anecdotes. We reminisce about the 1998 hit that cleverly sampled Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers, and ponder the value of "smart comedies" like Bullworth. The episode takes a quirky turn as we discuss New Yorker cartoons and a memorable Seinfeld moment, before diving into the operatic brilliance of Meatloaf's "You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth." Frenette's love of music started at the age of 5 while playing the bongos and listening to records with his parents. Artists like Perez Perado, Tito Puente, Herb Albert, Johnny Cash and Tom Jones were constantly spinning on the record player. By the age of 10, Matt was learning his rudiments in a marching and concert band. Some of Matt's early influences include Mitch Mitchell, Ginger Baker, Keith Moon, Michael Shrieve, Danny Seraphine,Billy Cobham, and later influences include Manu Katche, Steve Gadd, and Richard Bailey. Frenette is a founding member of Streetheart and his legacy as the other half of one of rock's greatest rhythm sections is still a part of Canadian rock legend. Matt's fierce approach to every song and powerful grooves he created were a big part of the musical foundation that Streetheart built their unmistakable sound on in the early days. In 1979 Matthew left Streetheart to join Paul Dean's new band Loverboy. Originally, Matt Frenette played drums for a side-project band, Headpins while Bernie Aubin played drums for a fellow Vancouver band, the soon to be renamed Loverboy. But within months, Aubin and Frenette swapped bands, where each continues to play to the present Alongside fellow Loverboy founding members Mike Reno, Paul Dean, Doug Johnson, with Ken "Spider" Sinnaeve, Matt Frenette has been "Working for the Weekend" since forming in Calgary, Alberta over 36 years ago. Loverboy has sold more than 10 million albums, earning four multi-platinum plaques, including the four-million-selling "Get Lucky." In 1982, as a member of Loverboy, Frenette went on to win a "still-record" six Juno awards. Matt's solid groove, versatile musicality and his visually exciting performance has created a demand for his appearance in many different artists' recordings, videos and tours, such as: Tom Cochrane, Bryan Adams, Kim Mitchell, Colin James and many other talented musicians. A supergroup is a band made up of musicians who have already achieved fame either as soloists or members of another band. One of the most iconic of supergroups would be formed in 1988 and go by the name of The Traveling Wilburys. In 1987 George Harrison released his album "Cloud Nine" with Jeff Lynne performing a number of instruments and co-producing. They started talking about forming a group during those sessions, with Harrison talking about bringing in Bob Dylan and Lynne talking about bringing in Roy Orbison. Tom Petty joined in when Harrison went to his house to pick up a guitar he had left there previously. The criteria that Harrison had, according to fellow Wilbury Tom Petty, was a group of folks "who you could hang out with." The group bonded over their appreciation for 50's-style rock n' roll, and their love of the Monty Python comedy troupe. The group took on personas of half-brothers, with George Harrison as Nelson Wilbury, Jeff Lynne as Otis Wilbury, Roy Orbison as Lefty Wilbury, Bob Dylan as Lucky Wilbury, and Tom Petty as Charlie T. Wilbury Jr. Frequent collaborator Jim Keltner provides percussion work and takes on the name of Buster Sidebury. The name Wilbury comes from a running joke between Lynne and Harrison. When some error in the equipment would occur during the production of Harrison's "Cloud Nine" album, Harrison said, “We'll bury 'em in the mix.”The Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1 had to be done in 10 days, because Dylan and Orbison had upcoming tours and projects. Generally the writing and recording of a song was completed in a single day. The result was a commercial and critical success, and the album won the Grammy for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group in 1990.Bruce presents this supergroup in today's podcast. MargaritaThis track starts with an 80's electronic feel, but quickly moves into a Bo Diddley beat that is more roots rock. A deeper cut, this song was released as the B-side to the single "Handle with Care."Handle With CareThe big single went to number 45 on the Billboard Hot 100, and number 2 on the Billboard Album Rock Tracks chart. This song was the impetus to bringing the group together, as it was originally supposed to be an extra track for a B-side of a European single, but the result was deemed too good for a limited release. Not Alone Any MoreThis deeper track finishes off side 1. It was written mainly by Otis Wilbury for the vocal style of Lefty Wilbury, although all members are credited as songwriters. The lyrics reflect themes of loneliness, which were Lefty's signature style back in the 60's.End of the LineThis was the band's second single. It peaked at number 63 on the Billboard Hot 100, but number 2 on the Album Rock Tracks chart. Roy Orbison died of a heart attack at age 52 after recording the song but before the video was made. The video features a guitar sitting in a rocking chair in memorial to Orbison ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Baby Doll by Devo (from the motion picture “Tape Heads”)Despite sporting an all-star cast, this comedy movie bombed at the box office. STAFF PICKS:Big League by Tom Cochrane and Red RiderWayne starts off the staff picks with a bittersweet song. Cochrane tells a tale of a young hockey star destined for the pros until he lost his life in a car crash. It was inspired by a true story told to Cochrane by the boy's father. This song went to number 9 on the American Billboard Rock Tracks chart, and gets frequent airplay on classic rock radio stations in Canada. Didn't Know It Was Love by SurvivorRob's staff pick finds the singer looking back at a relationship he missed, and hoping it isn't too late. Survivor had their big splash a few years prior with “Eye of the Tiger,” and this is off their seventh album, “Too Hot to Sleep.” Unfortunately it barely made it onto the Billboard 200 album chart at 187, and the group broke up shortly thereafter.Kokomo by The Beach BoysLynch brings us the first number 1 US hit for the Beach Boys since the 60's. The song was featured in the Tom Cruise movie “Cocktail,” and the song reflects a relaxed tropical vibe. This single reinvigorated the Beach Boys, as fans began to look at their catalogue again. What's On Your Mind (Pure Energy) by Information SocietyBruce wraps up the staff picks with the signature song from a Minneapolis synth pop trio. This song started as a 10-minute instrumental jam, but received minimalist lyrics reflecting the trouble people have communicating for the single release. It also features sampled lyrics from Star Trek, particularly the repeated "pure energy" lyric from Leonard Nimoy's Mr. Spock. COMEDY TRACK:A Nightmare on My Street by DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh PrinceThis single reflects the Halloween vibe as Will Smith aka The Fresh Prince riffs on Freddy Kruger's horror in “A Nightmare on Elm Street.” Thanks for listening to “What the Riff?!?” NOTE: To adjust the loudness of the music or voices, you may adjust the balance on your device. This episode features my conversation with drummer Davide DiRenzo. Based out of Toronto, Davide is highly regarded as one of Canada's most versatile and in-demand drummers. He has performed and recorded around the world with a wide range of artists including Cassandra Wilson, jackSoul, Tom Cochrane, Tomi Swick, Holly Cole, David Wilcox, Molly Johnson and many more. In addition to his extensive studio experience working with some of the world's top artists, Davide also works out of his home studio, where he records and sends drum tracks to artists and producers all over the globe. In our conversation, we talk about the role positive studio etiquette plays assuring that each session runs effectively. We also discuss why it's essential to maintain a growth mindset and explore each new learning opportunity to let go of our own self doubt and embrace our potential.
In the words of Tom Cochrane (who?!) "Life is a Highway - I wanna ride it all night long". And in keeping with this theme and my motto of living life with curiosity, hope and humour - in this episode I'm shining a light on a healing modality that is gaining traction when it comes to resolving trauma. Body-Centred psychotherapist Briony Pilkington and I first met about 18 months ago when I sought to further my quest to become more whole and less held back by forces such as will power (or a lack of), distraction (an oversupply of), lack of impulse control and self sabotage. It led me to Briony and a journey of discovery into how trauma (outside but not excluding shock and major trauma) can lie lurking deep within our somas (bodies) for decades, and hamper our best efforts and intentions to live full and productive lives - both professionally and personally. This episode is part 1 of a 2 part interview I did with Briony. In this episode we unpack the modality and Briony's training and experience in the field. In the episode that will follow - we will explore our client/practitioner journey together - so that people can get up close and personal with what it actually looks (and feels) like to embark on a body-centred healing pathway. I hope you enjoy this conversation.
For this new TALK MUSIC podcast I was thrilled to also have HARRY PIWERKA join me as a co-host. Harry and I went to high school together and reconnected a while back. As it turns out, he's also a great musician and was a part of the Toronto's vibrant music scene in the 70's as a member of the band MORNINGTON DRIVE. Harry is also friends with our guest, BASSIST extraordinaire and all round musician and NICE guy JEFF JONES. His long esteemed history of performing bass duties for some of Canada's great artists is really impressive. Jeff has played and recorded with TOM COCHRANE (and RED RIDER) for many years now (and still does) and is also on call regularly for BURTON CUMMINGS, who he's now performed with for over 20 years! Jeff also performed with Alex Lifeson and drummer John Rutsey in the first incarnation of RUSH, serving as their primary singer and bassist in the summer of 1968. He was replaced by GEDDY LEE in September 1968 before their second performance. When Jeff was just a teenager, he tasted fame early when he joined the group OCEAN who went on to have the MILLION selling hit song “Put your Hand in the Hand”. He has also spent time performing with GOWAN, MOLLY JOHNSON and the Infidels, RONNIE HAWKINS, released a well received solo album and also performs sometimes as a duo with GERRY FINN. We go deep into his past including his beginnings when he came to live in Toronto from Chicago and our chat encompasses his entire career. ENJOY!
How does cooking on tour with rock stars relate to cooking in a home for elderly people with dementia? Well, our guest, chef John Desbiens, tells us stories of his culinary origins, which have led him to become a sought-after chef maestro for rock stars, and eventually, a cooking master for residents in dementia care. John's stories of cooking for over 150 different celebrities, including John Travolta, Meryl Streep, Lyle Lovett, James Blunt, Alice Cooper, and Tom Cochrane, all the way to Twisted Sister, will have you on the edge of your seat and help you understand the importance of feeding people in a nourishing way. Once, a classically-trained, award-winning chef, who had an ego to match Gordon Ramsay, John recognized his unique role and was humbled by the presence of various personalities, and has come to realize that feeding people is a unique and sacred privilege. Meals are a cherished time for people, who may be gathering for the preparation of a loved one's funeral, celebrating a child's soccer win, or ready to walk on stage and perform their set in front of thousands of fans, and hence, food means so much more than just fuel for the body. John's caring and empathetic personality is a cherished bright star in the homestyle kitchen, where he customizes meals and snacks to match elderly residents' cultural roots and brings them back to earlier, warm memories of cooking with grandma. Food offers quality of life for people who may not know how to make tea and toast or remember a spouse's name or their former address. It's Mid-Week Wednesday, and Eddie's getting excited to use the new calendars in the studio. (Patience, dude...) As well, he and Reader talk about Gordon Ramsay's restaurant tips, recap Tom Cochrane's performance in Yorkton last night, and chat with some special guests about Sacred Heart High School's upcoming musical production. In the spectrum of popular music in Canada, which is as wide as the country, Tom Cochrane falls somewhere between an electrified Gordon Lightfoot and a solo Gordon Downie. Between the universal prose of Leonard Cohen and the blood passion of Tom Wilson. Three times we went to the war-torn fields and roads of Africa for World Vision and became lifelong friends. That's what seeing men, women and children dead or dying will do to you. You seek humanity. Tom's got humanity in spades. He came back from the first trip under a heavy dark load and sought out the only thing that he knew would lift him up. Music. He wrote a song called Life is a Highway. It became an anthem for millions. All lifted up by his music. Tom Cochrane is heading back West now. The tour is called Duo. Hey, y'all. I am Shay. This is thebuzzr podcast. On air indie, from my pad to yours over the airways. Monday's show, emerging Canadian artist Lisa Froment. Lisa tells us about the personal story behind her latest release ‘Baby Daddy', and why she wrote the song. Lisa is getting international attention for her music. Baby Daddy is her third release. Get a real-look glimpse of the artist & the stories behind her music. From Rock Era Magazine - Smooth, unapologetic, and powerful. Lisa Froment has created an anthem to help you come strong from an unhealthy relationship with a cheater. If you've ever been in a relationship when you found that your partner was so full of lies, you'll relate strongly to “Baby Daddy” by the Canadian artist, Lisa Froment. But this isn't a tearjerker single; rather, it's an empowering one to make you realize your worth and give the cheater up with no regrets. Enjoy the show! Thank you for tuning in. Enjoy the show! 10 P.M. EST at https://www.thebuzzrpod.com Track lineup: “Move Me” at show intro; “Baby Daddy” during show. Cheers! Shay About the Artist Lisa is a singer-songwriter & musician from Timmins, Canada. Lisa was born in Timmins Ontario and grew up in Wawa Ontario which is 3.5 hours away from Timmins. Her main instrument is guitar. Secondaries are the flute, drums and accordion. The artist's influences encompass all music styles and types. From pop to rock, to country, and rap. Her favorite is 80's rock. The timeless sound evokes memories. She grew up listening to Megadeth, Metallica, even Marilyn Manson, NINE INCH NAILS… to Journey, Heart, Toronto, Eric Clapton, Faith Hill, and Shania Twain. Her influences are across the board. Lisa was surrounded by music from a young age. She is from a musical family with both sides of the family talented musicians. It was natural to dabble into music. She picked up the guitar at age 12 learning by ear on her own. “We didn't have YouTube at the time. I sat in my bedroom with my guitar and would listen to some Eric Clapton and would pause the music, figure it out, rewind, play again, try to figure it out… until I did, then continued the song. I spent hours learning songs by ear and figured out chords, and what sounded right and what did not.” Christmas time in a traditional French home means, the wooden spoons, the violins, the guitars, the accordions, mandolins, and of course the singing. Singing just came naturally and discovered her voice at about 11 years old. She joined the elementary school choir and had the best music teachers. Mademoiselle Corrine Thomas and Mme Rancourt, accompanied by Mme Besner on piano. They taught her how to harmonize. “Not only that I got it right, but I knew the difference between hitting the wrong note and landing it every time because it's what sounds right to the ear. I can't read a music note to save my life but if a bass or guitar, a vocalist hits a wrong note? I'll catch it right away.” Personal reflection from the artist: “If you keep doing what you're doing, you're going to keep getting what you've been getting. If you want change, YOU must change, YOU must make the right decisions based on what YOU want. It's your life, live it for you. No one else will live it for you or make your dreams come true. Only YOU can make that happen. Don't wish on anything, take the proper steps to make it happen. Or you will wake up one day, an elderly, and regret that you have not gone for it. Tomorrow is never promised, so do it NOW.” Lisa has played many gigs, and festivals over the years. In her hometown of Timmins, the Stars And Thunder concert. On the bill were Brian Adams, Blue Rodeo, Tom Cochrane, Keith Urban and many more artists. She has sung the Canadian National Anthem for local hockey games and Canada Day festivals. At age 17 her first album received radio airplay. She was featured on CTV news for that first album, and for her second band called Fragmented Mind's albu...
