Written and directed by Alex Garland (28 Days Later, Ex Machina, Annihilation), this intense film thrusts viewers into a near-future America on the brink—where deep societal divisions, covert operatives, and explosive power struggles collide. Kirsten Dunst (Melancholia, The Power of the Dog, Bring it On) leads the ensemble as a beleaguered war photographer documenting the American dystopia of a not-too-distant future. Opposite her, Cailee Spaeny (Alien: Romulus, Guns Akimbo) provides a dose of heart & innocence as she attempts to follow in her hero's footsteps only to come face-to-face with the grim realities of wartime in America. Wagner Moura (Narcos, Elysium, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish) brings a wild, free-spirited energy amid the chaos as a determined if reckless Reuters journalist, & Stephen McKinley Henderson (Dune, Ladybird) rounds out the core cast as a seasoned New York Times reporter with a warm energy. Adding a unique edge to the narrative, Nick Offerman (The Last of Us, Parks and Recreation) appears as the President of what remains of the United States of America and Jesse Plemons (Breaking Bad, Killers of the Flower Moon) captivates in a singular & Incredibly tense sequence as a rogue soldier with a singular view of what constitutes a "real American.." Greg & John break down every electrifying moment—from tense, high-stakes meetings in war-torn settings to the adrenaline-charged standoff scenes that redefine the film's narrative. Discover how Civil War masterfully blends action and political intrigue to question the very fabric of America as we know it in an increasingly insane & uncertain time... April fools! We were busy bees last week so didn't get to talk about Killers of the Flower Moon, the final movie in this year's March Movie Madness. Since that amazing movie is really sad, we try and move on quickly to some lighter topics, like Nintendo's Switch 2 direct and the announcement of a sequel to Sammi's favorite game of all time.
In the documentary Growing up Gypsy Stacey Dooley gets to know three young English Romany Gypsy women. Chantelle joins Kylie Pentelow to talk about her life, alongside Stacey Dooley. If you've been in a pub you might have seen the posters which tells you to Ask for Angela at the bar if you feel unsafe. In response to hearing the word "Angela", trained staff should offer to help you leave the property safely. The national scheme was set up in 2016 to help anyone who is feeling vulnerable on a night out to get the support they need. It was named after Angela Crompton, who was killed by her husband in 2012. Her name becoming the codeword. However, recent BBC secret filming revealed that more than half of venues visited failed to respond correctly, with many staff members completely unaware of what to do. Angela's daughter Hollie explains why she is calling for government action to ensure it is implemented properly. The Oscar-nominated actor Lily Gladstone is the first Native American woman to be nominated for a Best Actress Academy Award – and the first indigenous woman to win a Best Actress Golden Globe, both for her role as Mollie Burkhart in Killers of the Flower Moon. Lily explains her character's journey through IVF, how she chooses roles and the responsibility she feels in representing her community. In the 1970s, British sociologist, Professor Ann Oakley, led a ground-breaking project called Becoming a Mother. She spoke to over 50 first-time mothers before and after they gave birth. What she found reshaped how we think about motherhood and started a sea-change in practice and policy around maternity care. Now a new project takes that legacy forward. It's called 50 Years of Becoming a Mother and is led by Professor Ann Oakley and Dr Charlotte Faircloth at the UCL Social Research Institute. They will revisit the original mothers, and study 55 new mothers, to understand how women's experiences of motherhood have changed over the last 5 decades.Presenter: Kylie Pentelow Producer: Kirsty Starkey Editor: Karen Dalziel

This week, fresh off of hanging out in person in Vancouver over the weekend, your intrepid hosts are taming the shrew in a modern high school setting to undeniably classic results as we close out Feb2ary Is For Lovers with the movie that launched Heath Ledger to stardom. It's 1999's 10 Things I Hate About You, directed by Gil Junger and starring Ledger, Julia Stiles, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Larisa Oleynik, David Krumholtz, Andrew Keegan, Susan May Pratt, Gabrielle Union, Larry Miller and Allison Janney. The first of a couple Shakespeare adaptations transposed into modern high school for Stiles, the movie makes good use of her charms as well, but this is undeniably Ledger's movie and he crushes as the heart-throb lead. Plus: We've got another Movie Theatre Field Report as J Mo makes the case for a Red Hulk as Joe Biden reading of Captain America: Brave New World because I mean, sure, why the hell not. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening along to our discussion, 10 Things I Hate About You is currently streaming in Canada on Disney+, Crave, Starz, and Hollywood Suite at the time of publication. Other works discussed in this episode include Top Gun: Maverick, The Social Network, Harriet The Spy, The Rugrats Movie, The Incredible Hulk, We Live In Time, The Wild Robot, The Order, Ripley, Severance, Killers of the Flower Moon, Oppenheimer, Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, Anyone But You, The Bourne Identity, Orphan: First Kill, Third Rock From The Sun, Clueless, Get Smart's Bruce & Lloyd: Out of Control, and Grease among many more. We'll be back next week to kick off Hackmonth (Gene Hackmarch?), as we salute the late great Gene Hackman with a month-long tribute to one of the best to ever do it, beginning with Hoosiers next week, finishing out with The Royal Tenenbaums as our March canon entry, and making stops along the way including Crimson Tide and The Conversation. Sad to see the old man go, but my god what a career and we can't wait to spend the next month discussing it in depth. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

Today, we're joined by New York Times best-selling author David Grann. In this conversation, David opens up about his New York roots, his passion as a die-hard Knicks fan, and why he'll never approach someone reading his book in public. He shares stories of defying his mother's wishes to pursue his writing dream, his unexpected moment as an answer on Jeopardy, and the honor of making it onto President Obama's must-read list.David reflects on his decision to transition from reporting to writing, culminating in the gripping tale of The Lost City of Z. He explains why he chose to explore Percy Fawcett's fateful journey into the Amazon for his first book, shares his experiences in the jungle, and reveals the moment he found out he had made the New York Times bestseller list. From there, David takes us into the tragic history of the Osage people in his blockbuster book Killers of the Flower Moon. He dives into how he gained their trust and why he believes their story is one of the greatest injustices in American history. We also dive deep into his latest work, The Wager, where David shares how he first came across the story, his fascination with mutiny, cannibalism, and life on the high seas. And, of course, he opens up about seeing his books brought to life by Martin Scorsese, his time with Leonardo DiCaprio, his visit to Wager Island, and much more. This is an insightful and fun conversation with one of the greatest storytellers of our time. Enjoy!
I talk about why I stopped making podcast episodes. Short story is I didn't like the content that was coming out, despite the fact that there was seemingly a lot of it and it was received positivtely by Native audiences. I talk about Killers of the Flower Moon, Rezball, Yellowstone Series ending, and state of Native cinema. Hope you all enjoy the return! I'll make another episode soon. Talk to you later.

We'll hear about his life and creative drive as our February Native in the Spotlight.
Grab your bestie! In this episode, Shelby and Laura review the Keke Palmer and SZA buddy comedy movie--One of Them Days. Tune in for a laughter-filled episode and thoughtful analysis on why this is one of the best comedies we've seen in awhile. We discuss how Keke and SZA make a dynamic duo, celebrate the film's critical and box office success, gush over SZA's feature film debut, explain why producer Issa Rae is for the culture, highlight our favorite moments like the South LA setting, the hilarious cameos (aka Janelle James and Katt Williams), and Maniac's twist of being a firefighter, analyze why we need more movies like this, and debate whether or not helping your friend in a fight is a green flag. On the thirty- sixth episode of All the Film Things, I am joined by my friends filmmaker/ Letterboxd Patron member Freddy Burgos and movie critic Matthieu Côté to talk about cinema etiquette and experiences! This episode is explicit. As passionate cinephiles, going to the cinema is one of the most cherished experiences. There's nothing like seeing a film the way it's meant to be seen: on a big screen with surround sound. Various factors like streaming and Covid have caused a decline in the movie theater business which effectively led to a decline in cinema etiquette. Cinema etiquette has become a prominent talking point as of late online. There's been debate surrounding if it's alright to sing during musicals, if it is acceptable to take photos of the theater screen, and much more… which is exactly what we unpack in this episode along with sharing our own cinema experiences. This is both Freddy and Matthieu's second times on the show! Freddy was a guest on ATFT last year alongside his brother artist Bernardo Goya to talk about Killers of the Flower Moon (2023) while Matthieu's first appearance was two months ago to discuss Le Samouraï (1967) to celebrate Noirvember. Both have been looking forward to being back on the show for a little while now and I knew this was a perfect topic for the three of us. Matthieu and I became instant friends since recording our Le Samouraï episode and ever since, we often chat about film and what films we have seen in theaters. We have similar movie theater pet peeves, especially since we both revel in the experience of going to the cinema alone. Freddy was a perfect guest for this episode because he goes on “cinematic pilgrimages”, meaning he will travel far and wide to see a film in the best possible format. I greatly respect his dedication to cinema and in this episode, he talks about a few of his cinematic pilgrimages. Actually, he had just gotten back from traveling to see The Brutalist (2024) a day or two before recording this episode! I'm very grateful to them both for joining me for this episode. While this episode topic has been in the works for a little while now, the planning of recording it was pretty last minute due to initial plans of recording an analytical episode went awry. This episode was recorded on January 3, 2025. Freddy is a filmmaker who has been taking a little bit of a break but is already working on his next project! Check out some of his past work by subscribing to his YouTube channel, Fresh Lad Collective, by clicking this link!: https://www.youtube.com/@freshladcollective. Freddy is also a Letterboxd Patron member and regularly shares reviews and comments about the films he watches. Follow him on Letterboxd by clicking https://letterboxd.com/burgitoes/! Matthieu has been killing it on YouTube lately. He's been interviewing filmmaker after filmmaker whose films are Oscar- eligible this year! In addition to interviews, you'll find excellent analytical film reviews. You definitely want to subscribe to his channel so click here!: https://www.youtube.com/@matthieucote2272 As previously mentioned, we unpack certain topics that fall under the cinema etiquette category that are up for debate from snacks to seating to children. Throughout the episode, especially in the beginning, we share our own theater experiences. Freddy's stories start off very unexpectedly as he shares a story from his childhood, Matthieu recounts his favorite movie theater memory that involve one of his favorite directors, and I fondly remembered the first time I saw a Christopher Nolan film in theaters. Also in this episode, we talk about filmmakers like Nolan who have championed the cinema experience, what theaters can do to improve, and the theater rule that one of us continuously breaks. All this and more on the brand new episode of All the Film Things! Background music created and used with permission by the Copyright Free Music - Background Music for Videos channel on YouTube.

Are you not entertained? In this episode, Shelby and Laura are joined by special guests, history buffs, and hosts of the Queens Podcast, Katy and Nathan. We review one of the most anticipated films of the year--Gladiator II starring Paul Mescal as Lucius, Denzel Washington as Macrinus, and Pedro Pascal as General Acacius. Tune in for historical analysis and funny takes on the epic sequel film directed by Ridley Scott. Spoiler alert -- we don't think the sequel is as good as 2000's OG Gladiator. We discuss our favorite historical films and TV shows and the Roman Empire meme before unpacking why Gladiator II paled in comparison to its predecessor. We also analyze the decision to make a sequel 24 years later, explain why the Glicked phenomenon did not reach Barbenheimer status, dissect whether or not Paul Mescal is a hot leading man, highlight our favorite moments like the various battle scenes and nostalgic moments honoring Maximus, and detail the many historical inaccuracies like the water coliseum battle with sharks and lack of female characters beyond Lucilla. Lastly, we debate whether or not lying to protect your son is a green flag. Interested in more movie reviews? Send us a textEpisode 508 "The Penguin" Actor: Louis Cancelmi One of my favorite actors working today. He was terrific in #ThePenguin #KillersOfTheFlowerMoon and #TheIrishman not to mention #Billions and so much more. He is very much like John Carroll Lynch, low key, usually fuels and steals the show or the projects he's in. Terrific talent. Old school look.Louis Cancelmi. You can currently find Louis in "The Penguin" as Rex Calabrese. He has an amazing filmography highlighted by Killers of the Flower Moon and The Irishman. Louis and I cover serious ground about life, acting, his roles and more. Louis also played undercover agent Mike D'Angelo on "Boardwalk Empire" (HBO, 2010-14), Louis also enjoyed recurring roles on "Blue Bloods" (CBS, 2010-), "Billions" (Showtime, 2016-) and "The Looming Tower" (Hulu, 2018-). Born in Anchorage, AK, Cancelmi studied Theater at Yale College before making his screen debut in dark workplace comedy "New Guy" (2003). He went on to play Balkanin in pre-WW1 drama "Si Laraby" (2003) and guest on "Third Watch" (NBC, 1999-2005) but initially focused on the stage, performing in productions of "Death of a Salesman," "A View from the Bridge" and "Love Lies Bleeding." But he eventually returned to the film world when he appeared alongside actress sister Annie Parisse in indie "First Person Singular" (2009). Roles in family dramedy "Gabi on the Roof in July" (2010), romantic comedy "The Ride of Tom and Valkyrie" (2011), love triangle tale "Green" (2011) and LGBT movie "Gayby" (2012) then followed, as did a brief spot in "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" (2014). Cancelmi then appeared alongside his real-life wife Katherine Waterston and father-in-law Sam Waterston as a theatre director struggling with impending fatherhood in "Please Be Normal" (2014), and then again in his brother-in-law Graham's short film "And It Was Good" (2015). Cancelmi's profile grew considerably when he was cast as undercover agent Mike D'Angelo in Emmy-winning crime drama "Boardwalk Empire" (HBO, 2010-14). A year later he enjoyed a three-episode stint as serial killer Thomas Wilder on police procedural "Blue Bloods" (CBS, 2010-), played a thieving zoo worker on "Elementary" (CBS, 2012-) and added indie movies "Funny Bunny" (2015) and "Manhattan Romance" (2015) to his filmography. After showing up in Doug Liman's virtual reality drama "Invisible" (2016), Cancelmi played violent criminal Jimmy in NYC drama "Tramps" (2016), eco-criminal Owen in "The Blacklist" (NBC, 2013-) and successful trader Victor Mateo in three episodes of "Billions" (Showtime, 2016-). Cancelmi then landed supporting roles in art world satire "Fits and Starts" (2017) and comedy thriller "Green Olds" (2018), shared the screen with Robert De Niro and Al Pacino in hitman biopic "The Irishman" (2018). Feature: Critics discuss what's behind the idea of movies being longer, and how to best prep for them At a time when rolls of film dominated the land, making a blockbuster was going to be expensive when you had to consider a physical film that had to be distributed across the globe. It's an issue that made films longer than 120 minutes feel like an occasion. However, in the world of digital cameras, the unique quirks that came with the film were no longer an issue, making it easier to extend the length of a given feature. Auteurs like Christopher Nolan and Martin Scorsese have tried their best to keep viewers' attention, with recent projects like Oppenheimer and Killers of the Flower Moon, respectively. In the vein of West Side Story (1961) and Lawrence of Arabia, Brady Corbet's upcoming film The Brutalist uses an intermission to give viewers a break. But ultimately… are Hollywood's movies longer now? And for viewers interested in watching these long movies– what are ways to fully devote yourself to a film?
Vintage Sand listeners this month will get something of a twofer, a BOGO episode. Since we really have not had the chance to do a full necrology since July, Michael takes the time to relate the accomplishments of some very bright lights in the film business that have gone out over the past four months. These include artists who leave behind a great legacy and holes that can never really be filled, including people like Dame Maggie Smith, James Earl Jones and Alain Delon. Before we get to that point, though, we begin with a very different kind of eulogy: our reflections on Francis Ford Coppola's summa, the egregious "Megalopolis". We felt, as we did for Scorsese in our episodes on both "The Irishman" and "Killers of the Flower Moon", that a sprawling work by one of our greatest filmmakers, in this case a film that had a gestation period of nearly fifty years, deserved to be examined both in its own right as a work of art and in context as part of its creator's career. In hindsight, it's risible to think that at the end of the 70's, film fans were heatedly debating who among the heroes of the American New Wave would end up with the greater career: Scorsese or Coppola? (Let's not even talk about some of the others around the periphery of that conversation at the time, like De Palma, Bogdanovich, Friedkin, Rafelson, Cimino, Lucas and yes, perhaps even Spielberg—although, surprisingly, Paul Schrader has been coming up with a few late-period masterpieces). Megalopolis ends that debate, and stands, as I referred to "Eyes Wide Shut" relative to Kubrick's career in our episode devoted to that film, as a cardboard tombstone to the career of a gifted filmmaker. While the members of Team Vintage Sand, whose bottomless intrepidity was confirmed by each of us successfully wading through (a la Andy Dufresne) the 2 ½ hours of dreck that is "Megalopolis", did find the occasional positive to light on, for the most part it was an example of a work of incredible consistency, in that just about every choice Coppola makes as writer and director was the wrong one. Perhaps the comparison with Scorsese is unfair, and certainly nothing could ever erase the impact of Coppola's four films of the 1970's, or even the smaller delights of his later work (Mike's a fan of "The Cotton Club", and I've always thought that "Tucker" was a much better film than its reputation dictates). But for us, the truth is that between the gratuitous literary and high culture references, the sophomoric philosophizing that would make any actual 10th grader cringe, the derivative film tributes sprinkled throughout (including, unbelievably, a moment where the film appears to physically burn up in the projector—a brilliant idea had Bergman not done it 60 years ago in "Persona"), and a script that even good actors like Adam Driver and Giancarlo Esposito can't save, "Megalopolis" was, quite unintentionally, the funniest film of the year—and given how much we love and admire its creator, the most painful. Once can only hope that this is not Coppola's final statement, and that in future efforts he will trust his audience, not try so hard to impress us with his erudition, and remember what made him so great in the first place

The Fraser's Edge returns with Brendan's latest release, Brothers, starring Peter Dinklage and Josh Brolin. While the movie was made before Killers of the Flower Moon but released on Amazon Prime last week, Jeff and Stuart both agree that in this mediocre, by-the-numbers film, Fraser is the one who shines with his comedic force.
This week, the boys discuss Stephen Spielberg's AI: Artificial Intelligence, not to be confused with A1: The Steak Sauce. When Stanley Kubrick handed over the film, did 10-year-old John know he'd never ever be able to trust this film? Just kidding. He went in with an open mind. As did Dave, who pulled a Roger Ebert: hated it the first time he watched it but loved it this time around! Where did Jeff land? I wonder if he liked it better than he likes subway poetry. “I think [Here] has some of the imagination of Forrest Gump, but it's not Forrest Gump. It's a different animal. I mean, it has the same kind of humanity to it, which is what I'm pretty good at,” says Eric Roth about his latest film Here, co-written and directed by Robert Zemeckis and reuniting actors Tom Hanks and Robin Wright. On today's podcast, we speak with Oscar winning screenwriter Eric Roth about the challenges of writing the screenplay for Here that mostly takes place in one room, with a fixed camera that never moves. The movie explores the ordinary lives of multiple generations of families in a way that many will find relatable, heartbreaking and, at times, claustrophobic. “I'm not sure [the characters in Here] are extraordinary or not, but they show the length and breadth of what people can and can't do and when they're trapped. I think when it works that way dramatically, it's quite lovely and quite beautiful. I don't want to use the word profound, but I think the [movie] is profound to a certain extent because it is just about the regularity of life. And that, from dinosaurs to the future, it's going to keep going. Hopefully people will find great joy in how they're living and I'm sure great pain too, but I think that's just sort of the circle of life,” he says. We also discuss some of his other films like Forrest Gump, for which he won an Oscar, and Killers of the Flower Moon. He shared this advice about using subtext in screenplays. “I think that I'm always trying to find a way to enhance the scene with not only subtext, but with some kind of metaphor and make it possibly more interesting as to getting to the root of people's feelings without them having to vomit out what they're saying you know. It's not easy, but I think as I've gotten more successful and more accomplished at it,” he says. To hear more of Eric Roth's advice for screenwriters, listen to the podcast.
This week, after John briefly discusses "Goodrich", the new Michael Keaton picture written and directed by Hallie Meyers-Shyer, the boys take on another Hitchcock classic to highlight the film year 1959. Chosen by our random year generator, 1959 was a doozy for world and civil news, making a mistaken identity spy thriller the perfect film to highlight. The random year generator spun 1974, so the boys head to 1937 L.A. to discuss the Roman Polanski, Robert Towne, Bob Evans, Jack Nicholson, and Faye Dunaway classic “Chinatown”. Often cited as one of the best movies with one of the best scripts in Hollywood history, plenty has been said about this film. Still, cinematographer Dave had never seen it, John went to fancy film school, and Jeff goes deep into the context of the film year, highlighting top-grossing films, awards, and what the heck was going on in the world. Hannah's picked Martin Scorsese's take on the string of brutal murders of the oil-wealthy Osage Nation that took place in 1920s Oklahoma. It stars Robert de Niro (natch) and Leonardo DiCaprio (also natch) and features a brilliant performance from newcomer Lily Gladstone. But does it warrant the stonking three-and-a-half-hour run time? WTF is going on with Leo's face? And will both Mick and Yosra manage to stay awake? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for August 11, 2024 is: vitiate VISH-ee-ayt verb To vitiate something is to ruin it or render it ineffective. // A single inaccuracy in the spreadsheet that supported the data vitiated the entire proposal. See the entry > Examples: "… Lily Gladstone does more with thought, in 'Killers of the Flower Moon,' than most actors ever achieve with flagrant and spectacular action; her presence fills the screen with what used to be understood as star power (before the mainly technical prowess of conservatory-trained actors became a mark of Hollywood dignity). The role she plays is one of tragic complexity; blatant theatrics would have vitiated its grandeur." — Richard Brody, The New Yorker, 23 Jan. 2024 Did you know? If you're itching to find fault with the word vitiate, you don't have to look far—the word comes ultimately from the Latin noun vitium, which refers to a fault, vice, shortcoming, or impediment to success or perfection. Accordingly, vitiate—like its fellow vitium-descended v-words vituperate ("to use harsh, condemning language"), vicious, and vice—has a negative bent. To vitiate something is, essentially, to mar or damage it in some way, whether by ruining or spoiling it ("a joke vitiated by poor timing"), corrupting it morally ("a mind vitiated by prejudice"), or rendering it null or ineffective ("fraud that vitiates a contract"). Despite its versatility, vitiate is most effective when used in formal speech and writing; that is to say, those who drop it into a construction like "a sandwich vitiated by too much peanut butter" may find themselves subject to some mild vituperation.
During the 2023 New Yorker Festival, three legendary staff writers got together to discuss the craft of investigative journalism: digging for information like detectives, and then presenting it in a way to rival the best thrillers. For each of these writers, the “bad guy” —whose actions usually set the story in motion – needs to be presented in three dimensions; trusting the reader to grapple with that person's perspective is key to an engrossing story. “I look at these big, boring issues often, like economic inequality or corruption in politics,” Jane Mayer says. “You take a subject like campaign finance – the Citizens United decision and how it's corrupted politics. If you can find somebody like [Charles or David] Koch and explain there actually was a billionaire behind so much of this, and he has a story, and he has a family, and there are always screwed-up fathers and sons involved in these families. . . . It means that you're able to explain the ethical choices people make.” Mayer is best known for her book “Dark Money,” about the Koch brothers; David Grann wrote “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “The Wager,” both best-sellers; and Patrick Radden Keefe covered the Sackler family's opioid dynasty in “Empire of Pain,” and a murder during the Troubles in Northern Ireland in “Say Nothing.” They were joined by their editor, The New Yorker's Daniel Zalewski.

The Osage Reign of Terror - dramatized recently in the 2023 award winning Martin Scorsese film, Killers of the Flower Moon based on the 2017 book of the same name - has been described as an epidemic of murders and mysterious deaths among the people of the Osage Nation. This is a wild story of a preposterous amount of corruption, conspiracy, and cold-blooded killing. Most experts state that at least sixty murders - and quite possibly HUNDREDS - were committed between 1918 and 1931, with the majority of murders taking place between 1921 and 1926 in just one rural county in Oklahoma.
