Activist and author Yves Engler has been jailed by Montreal police for criticizing media figure Dahlia Kurtz and her support for Israeli atrocities in Gaza, after Kurtz said Engler's comments made her feel “afraid for my safety”. After Engler wrote about the charges against him, he reported that he was subsequently charged for “harassing the police” by drawing public attention to his case. It's fascinating how everyone who supports Israel always collapses into playing the victim at the earliest opportunity—even western police forces tasked with persecuting Israel's critics. It documents Canada's contribution to the ouster of over 20 elected governments from Mohammad Mossadegh in Iran to Patrice Lumumba in Congo, Salvador Allende in Chile and Jean Bertrand Aristide in Haiti.   As part of subverting democracy, Ottawa has cut off aid and imposed illegal sanctions in the hopes of turning the population against the targeted government. While leaders In the capitals of Europe and America promise to carry on the Ukraine proxy war no matter the price, the People are already in the streets protesting the real and rising costs of that belligerence. For Canadians, whose government is already full-throatedly behind: the bellicose stance against Russia, prospects of an expanded war against China and Iran, battles by sanction in Venezuela, Nicaragua, and elsewhere, there is too Haiti. Last week, the Trudeau Liberals blithely announced another $100 million dollars to be delivered to the tiny island nation's military and police effort to keep the restive population under heel. This on top of millions already delivered. It's almost as if Ottawa believes the fatted tax goose's golden eggs will never flag. Yves Engler is an independent, Montreal-based journalist and author. He's written twelve books on Canadian foreign policy, including ‘Canada in Haiti: Waging War on the Poor Majority', co-authored with Anthony Fenton. This past week, Canadian Forces redeployed a CP-140 Aurora surveillance plane from its dedicated mission assisting U.S.-led drugs smuggling interdiction efforts in the Caribbean to spend two days flying reconnaissance over Haiti. Foreign Affairs Minister, Melanie Joly characterized the escalation of Canada's military involvement in the country as a "demonstration of Canada's commitment to Haiti". Last month, Canada demonstrated that commitment in the form of an unspecified number and type of armored vehicles being sold to a government that has already called for foreign military intervention to quell wide-spread public discontent with its corrupt and entirely unelected leadership. UVic's USS is, with similar student societies on campuses across the country, associated with the politically influential Ukrainian Canadian Congress. Tyan Cherepuschak is an undergraduate student at the University of Victoria, and is a Ukrainian-Canadian who until recently served as Vice-President to the UVic chapter of the Ukrainian Canadian Students Union (SUSK). And; Tyson Strandlund is a member of both the UVic chapter of the Young Communist League and the Vancouver Island Peace Council, a local chapter of the Canadian Peace Congress. He too is a Canadian of Ukrainian descent, who has studied in and visited Ukraine both before and after the 2014 Maidan coup. When Pedro Castillo was elected president of Peru in April 2021, he embodied the hopes of millions of rural, Black and Indigenous peoples. Following more than 18 months of opposition from Congress and the Peruvian elite, Castillo was impeached and jailed after he attempted to rule by emergency poweres. Protests against the arrest have been met with lethal force by the police and the army. As many as 50 people have been killed and over 600 wounded. Meanwhile the Canadian government has sided with the United States in supporting the new president, Dina Boluarte. We speak with Yves Engler of the Canadian Foreign Policy Institute.

Two years ago the Canadian Foreign Policy Institute and others started a campaign to oppose Israeli military recruitment in Canada. A parliamentary petition calling on the Minister of Justice to investigate this recruitment got more than 7500 signatures but died on the order paper. In response to a follow-up petition, the Liberal government last month reiterated the illegality of foreign recruitment but declined to take action. This has prompted two individuals to initiate a private prosecution. Last week, a justice of the peace determined that their case against Sar-El Canada could be heard. Delivered dramatically via video stream - something not so common then - and at the height of America's military demolition of Iraq . The terminally ill Pinter spent most of his thirty two and a half minute address addressing the profoundly ignorant state in which We the people exist, and how we blithely allow the horrors of our times be committed in our name. Who hearing that speech could forget his hoarsely stentorian remonstration of the Bush claque and its cowardly coalition's willful crimes? "It never happened. Nothing ever happened. Even while it was happening it wasn't happening. It didn't matter." Seventeen years later, and millions killed, maimed, dispossessed and made desperate the lying and killing continues apace. Pinter would be unsurprised, because as he said then, for the powerful, "... it is essential that people remain in ignorance, that they live in ignorance of the truth, even the truth of their own lives." And so it is in Canada today, as we march towards another global war, standing on guard in ignorance. It's fitting too in this instance that Justin Trudeau's political mandate, like that of the Kiev regime, was neither poll earned, nor an expression of the country's confidence in his leadership, but rather wrested from an NDP leadership too weak to defend democracy. In Ukraine, power was seized the old-fashioned way - from the barrel of a sniper rifle - as democrats bled in the streets. This week on the show, we're talking about the absence of agriculture from Canada's political discourse. Of course, during an election campaign that was only five weeks long, it's hard to fit everything in, but rabble columnist Lois Ross makes the case for turning our politicians' relatively scattered attention span to agriculture. It's not an issue that necessarily garners the most headlines, but it is an issue that intersects with some of the most pressing crises of our time: climate change, worker's rights, globalization, and ever-increasing market concentration.  Food systems are crucial to our survival but are becoming increasingly precarious due to climate disasters, supply-chain disruptions, and the environmental impacts of land concentration. Farmers, of course, are crucial to food systems. In her latest column for rabble, Lois makes the case for a basic guaranteed income for farmers, touches on the need for co-operatives in farming, and warns us that simply due to a matter of median age, in the next ten years, more than half of Canada's farmers will be retiring. This is no simple matter.  Lois has spent the past 30 years working in Communications for a variety of non-profit organizations in Canada, including the North-South Institute. Born into a farm family in southern Saskatchewan and trained as a journalist and photographer, she is the author of both fiction and non-fiction books. She is passionate about agriculture, rural and international development, and health. Morrice is the Green's newly-elected member of Parliament in the Ontario riding of Kitchener-Centre, which he won after a tight race with the NDP candidate in that constituency, Beisan Zubi.  As it turns out, Morrice is going to spend his first term focused on serving his neighbours in Kitchener Centre rather than turn his attention to leading a party that is in no uncertain terms badly wounded in the wake of the departure of its leader, and the first Black and Jewish leader of a federal party ever, Annamie Paul.  Of course, there are other ways to make change outside of government. Columnist Minister Faust takes us through the benefits of what he calls pro-social competition -- where activists, unions, social entrepreneurs, or governments can open competitions to fuel social innovation, solutions, and generally improve society's conditions.  This is a model that has seen success on the African continent, Faust writes. Collective minds are always going to field more solutions than any individual entity. And, competitions don't have to be capitalist.  "Unlike corporate contests that let contest-convenors seize all rights to submissions, a pro-social contest allows all contestants to own their results to build value wherever they can via their own co-ops, community groups, and teams. Or, the convenor can hire winners to do the work they've proven they can do.
