What choices should leaders make before they start scaling AI across their organization?In this first episode of our four-part podcast series on Deloitte's 2026 Global Human Capital Trends report, Lesley Arens speaks with Yves Van Durme and Karolien Martens from Deloitte Belgium about the shift From Tensions to Tipping Points and the choices that will shape the future of work.Last year's report explored the tensions organizations face. This year, the emphasis moves to tipping points. Almost seven in ten respondents say that becoming fast and nimble will be their organization's main competitive strategy. That changes the conversation: organizations can no longer keep balancing competing priorities indefinitely. They need to choose a direction.The report identifies three major shifts:(1) From Humans + Machines to Humans × Machines(2) From Cost Efficiency to Value Creation(3) From Static Plans to Dynamic OrchestrationTogether, they challenge organizations to move beyond simply adding AI to existing processes. Automating yesterday's operating model may make work faster, but it does not necessarily make it better or create more value. The more fundamental question is what work should look like when human capabilities and technology are designed to strengthen each other.That starts with intention. Why is the organization using AI? Who should benefit? Which decisions should improve? And what will happen with the time that automation frees up? Without clear answers, AI risks producing more activity and additional workload without creating meaningful value.The conversation also explores the trade-offs behind AI adoption. When routine work disappears, organizations may also remove the experiences through which people traditionally developed expertise. Junior employees cannot simply move into high-value work without first acquiring the judgement that often comes from solving difficult and messy cases. Learning paths will therefore need to be redesigned alongside the work itself.Human judgement becomes more important, not less. AI can analyse information, identify patterns and suggest decisions at great speed. People still need to interpret those suggestions within the context of their organization, decide which considerations matter most and take responsibility for the outcome.Yves and Karolien argue that the central challenge is not to develop an AI strategy for its own sake. It is to decide what the organization wants people, technology and intelligent agents to contribute in the future.That also requires an honest discussion about how the benefits of AI will be shared. Who gains from the time saved, the productivity created and the work redesigned? Trust will depend partly on whether employees, customers and the organization itself can recognize their place in that answer.The message for leaders is clear: decide deliberately what to automate, what to augment and which human capabilities to preserve. D'origine sarde, Yves vit à Porquerolles depuis une trentaine d'années. Maçon de métier, il est aussi vice-président de l'association Vivre à Porquerolles. Passionné de jardinage, il est connu sur l'île comme un bon vivant.Son goût pour la cuisine lui vient de sa famille. De son père et de son grand-père, qui organisaient régulièrement des repas à thème : cuisine italienne avec les raviolis à la ricotta, cochons de lait grillés, poissons, langoustes… Et du côté de son grand-père normand, terrines, pâtés et tripes.À Porquerolles, l'association Vivre à Porquerolles organise de nombreux événements festifs, souvent autour de grandes tablées. It was my pleasure to invite Yves Tiberghien back into the Virtual Studio to examine the state of geopolitical relations today and in particular the impact of the current conflicts – Ukraine and Russia, and the US-Israel war in Iran. Also, I wanted to get his take on the impact of the Trump administration on the global order. Finally, Yves and a colleague Zaki Laidi recently published a volume with Cambridge University Press called the “Hedgers” which focuses in part on what they identify as 8 key Global South Middle Powers (GSMP) and their active roles in global order. I wanted to get his reflections on these Middle Powers. Yves is the Distinguished Professor and Dean of the Taipei School of Economics and Political Science, at National Tsinghua University. Yves is also a Professor of Political Science, Konwakai Chair in Japanese Research, and Director of the Center for Japanese Research (on leave of absence) at the University of British Columbia. His research focuses on the global order, the comparative political economy of East Asia, and global economic and environmental governance. His latest books include: "The Hedgers: How The Global South Navigates the Sino-American Competition", co-authored with Zaki Laïdi from Sciences Po Paris; and "the Global Economic Order on the Brink", a co-edited book with Shiro Armstrong from ANU. In November 2017, Yves was made a Chevalier de l'ordre national du mérite by the French President.

 Ce semaine, je suis avec le sculpteur Yves Dana. Yves est né en 1959 à Alexandrie. En 1961, après un exil forcé, il est arrivé en Suisse avec sa famille. Son parcours de sculpteur l'a conduit du fer au bronze, puis à la pierre, qu'il travaille depuis plus de trente ans dans ce magnifique atelier installé dans l'Orangerie du parc Mon-Repos à Lausanne. Mais j'ai eu l'impression que derrière ces sculptures debout, parfois monumentales, restait la trace de L'exil. Car, tout comme l'exil, la sculpture passe aussi par l'arrachement, parce qu'il faut retirer de la matière pour faire apparaître une présence. L'œuvre apparaît parce que quelque chose a été enlevé. La forme naît d'une perte. Ce qui apparaît est inséparable de ce qui a disparu. Mais là où l'exil impose la fuite, la sculpture d'Yves est un ancrage, une forme qui fait coexister la mémoire, la perte et la présence. D'où viennent les formes sculptées ? Michel-Ange disait qu'elles étaient déjà dans la pierre et qu'il suffisait d'enlever ce qui était en trop pour les faire apparaître, mais peut-être sont-elles de pures inventions du sculpteur ? Ecoutez la réponse d'Yves, mais pour commencer il m'a parlé de ce que toute sa vie, il a toujours cherché…
