Volgens de NRA ligt die taak bij de burger zelf, en daarvoor heeft hij een wapen nodig. Toch gebeurt er in de discussie over wapens nu iets nieuws: het bedrijfsleven bemoeit zich ermee. De actiegroep #BoycotNRA heeft opmerkelijk succes. Banken en verzekeraars distantiëren zich van de NRA, door te stoppen met voordelige tarieven en goedkope creditcards. Hotelketens, autoverhuurbedrijven en luchtvaartmaatschappijen Delta en United stoppen met het geven van standaardkortingen voor NRA-leden. Dat zon kortingsregeling bestaat is te gek van woorden, want het is omgekeerde discriminatie: niet-leden en dus vaak mensen die geen wapens bezitten betalen meer voor een verzekering, creditcard of vliegticket. Delta stond meteen voor een politiek vuurpeloton. Het bedrijf is gevestigd in Atlanta en vice-gouverneur Casey Cagle van Georgia dreigde de luchtvaartreus te straffen door fiscale voordelen en accijnsvrijstelling op brandstof op te heffen. Zijn argument in een tweet: Bedrijven kunnen niet het gevecht tegen conservatieven aangaan zonder dat wij terugslaan. De Senaat van Georgia nam onmiddellijk een motie aan om Delta met vijftig miljoen dollar belastingen te straffen. Vooralsnog houden Delta en de andere bedrijven de rug recht. Betekent dat iets? Wel degelijk. Prominente ondernemers die zeggen genoeg is genoeg, daar krijgt Washington een harde dobber aan.
