The NRA After Its Latest Board Election and Trump's Snub (ft. John Petrolino)

This week, we're taking a close look at the state of the NRA. The nation's largest gun-rights group is not nearly as large as it was half a decade ago. President Donald Trump just bailed on its conference. However, its civil corruption suit is now over, and its latest board election is in the books. To give us a detailed view of where the NRA is at today, we've got freelance reporter John Petrolino on the show. John often writes for Shooting News Weekly and Bearing Arms. He recently did a great breakdown of the NRA election for the latter. John said the reformers, who now go by NRA 2.0, won a sizeable victory and should have a significant majority headed into next weekend's NRA Annual Meeting. Other longtime board members and defenders of former CEO Wayne LaPierre, many of whom are now part of what's called Strong NRA, did not fare as well. But John noted those who didn't run under the banner of either group did the worst of all. He also said some prominent board members, like New York State Rifle and Pistol Association president Tom King, lost their bids. John said he was a bit surprised by some of the results, but he believes the board's partisanship may not last. He said both sides have made calls for unity, however hard that might end up being. Special Guest: John Petrolino.

The National Rifle Association appears to be at the end of a six-year ordeal. Last month, the final order in its New York civil corruption case was handed down, and the outside law firm responsible for handling it has left. To talk about the latest developments, we have NRA board member Rocky Marshall on the show this week. He joined us from the group's latest board meeting in Texas and said the group is focused on the future. Marshall, who has been a staunch critic of former leader Wayne LaPierre and the Brewer law firm, said the board is now united in its focus. He broke the news that LaPierre has now paid back the millions of dollars the New York jury said he owed the NRA. He also said the group's new leadership, including CEO Doug Hamlin and top lobbyist John Commerford, is secure in their positions. Marshall outlined his view of what the NRA needs to do in the coming months and years to regain the trust of the millions of members who've fled the group over the corruption. And he announced a new, much larger campaign for the reformer block in this year's NRA election. Special Guest: Rocky Marshall.

The award-winning Compliance into the Weeds is the only weekly podcast that takes a deep dive into a compliance-related topic, literally going into the weeds to explore a subject more fully. Are you looking for some hard-hitting insights on compliance? Look no further than Compliance into the Weeds! In this episode, Tom Fox and Matt Kelly dive into the intricate and unusual story of the National Rifle Association (NRA) and its recent corporate governance overhaul. Matt and Tom explore Judge Joel Cohen's final ruling, which mandates extensive corporate governance reforms for the NRA. These reforms address significant issues, such as a structurally weak board, poor financial controls, and an overpowering CEO in Wayne LaPierre, who misused the organization's resources. Necessary measures discussed include revamping the board's audit committee and introducing annual compliance reports, along with significant protections for the role of the Chief Compliance Officer. The episode highlights the universal principles of good governance, asserting that the NRA's reforms can serve as a valuable lesson for other organizations. Regardless of the political or ethical stance on the NRA's activities, the implemented governance structures underscore the necessity of transparency, an empowered compliance function, and robust oversight mechanisms to prevent misuse of organizational resources. These insights are illustrated through sample agreements and templates in the court ruling, which can guide other organizations in strengthening their governance and compliance programs. Riding Shotgun With Charlie #213 Doug Hamlin  NRA, Executive Vice President   It's not everyday you get to interview the Executive Vice President of the National Rifle Association, let alone take him for a drive around Fairfax. But when the chance comes up, you take it. I owe a huge Thank You to Amanda Suffecool for making the connection. It's pretty cool when Mark Keefe, who I've seen on TV and in magazines, comes out to make sure everything is ready for the interview.    Like many folks, firearms were a family tradition for Doug. He learned to hunt from his grandfather and they had a “healthy collection” of firearms, many which were military surplus. When he was old enough, Doug joined the Marines. The years in service were very beneficial in forming the self confidence that people need. It also taught him that life is competitive and that you need to step up or step out.    After the Marines, he had a friend who was working with Petersen Publishing Company in Detroit. His friend was doing well. He asked his friend to put in a good word at the Petersen headquarters in LA. He got to meet with Mr. Robert Petersen and was offered a job at Guns & Ammo magazine in the late 1980's. Mr. Petersen, of course, is the largest donor to the National Firearm Museum at NRA HQ.Petersen was a big role model and mentor to Doug. He moved from ad sales to publisher in 4 years.    Eventually Petersen moved Doug over to publish MotorTrend Magazine, which was a very important property to Petersen Publishing. Being a bit of a car guy, this was a good fit. The day after getting the new job, Petersen jetted him off to the New York auto show. Doug got to travel the world with Petersen, including trips to London. Often, they'd stop at Purdy and Holland & Holland to “make an investment”. Many of these investments happen to be in the NRA Museum. His NRA roots run deep!   Having lunch with Ken Elliot, his former boss at Petersen, it came up that Joe Graham was retiring from NRA Publications. Ken asked if some NRA folks, including Wayne LaPierre, could join them for lunch. Having Doug as the executive director of publications came up in the conversation. He started the position in early 2014, and spent 10 years working as publisher.    When LaPierre stepped down in February, there were going to be changes on the Board. There were the “old guard” and the “reformers”. It came down to Doug and Ronnie Barrett. Doug speaks extensively on what happened at the meetings and election. Getting back to NRA HQ after the election and with almost no sleep, Doug got right to work.   Doug has ignited a spark to the staff. Everyone at NRA has a much brighter outlook on the future of NRA. They're working to rebuild the trust with membership, as well as grow it to what it was just a few years ago. There's only a small percentage of gun owners who are members. With around 100 million gun owners and only 4 million NRA members, there's a lot of room for expansion.   The NRA has several publications and over 40 programs. Things from helping ranges get started, Eddie Eagle, lobbying in every state, several websites, and training. Their publications have been rebranded as NRA Media, and Mark Keefe is the leader there. (And the interview with Mark will be dropping soon!) With all their media, they're reaching 20 million people a month!   We do need a strong and stable NRA. I've said this several times, the NRA is taking the arrows from the antis while the other groups are doing work. The antis don't know about the other groups since they are smaller than the NRA. I did get a chance to interview a few others at NRA while I was there. Everyone loves their jobs at NRA and enjoy working there. It's good to see and hear this. Like I said, we need a strong NRA.  Favorite quotes: “You better step up or step out.” “They also understand the significance of a strong NRA. It benefits the entire industry when you have a strong NRA.” “You can count on us. You can trust us.” “NRA is a tremendous institution and we're doing a lot to get us back on track and rebuild our membership.” National Rifle Association https://home.nra.org/   Friends of NRA  https://www.friendsofnra.org/   NRA Foundation Grants https://www.nrafoundation.org/grants   NRA Explore/NRA Programs https://explore.nra.org/   NRA Facebook https://www.facebook.com/NRA   NRA Instagram https://www.instagram.com/nra/ Second Amendment Foundation https://secure.anedot.com/saf/donate?sc=RidingShotgun    Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms https://www.ccrkba.org/     Please support the Riding Shotgun With Charlie sponsors and supporters.    Dennis McCurdy Author, Speaker, Firewalker http://www.find-away.com/   Self Defense Radio Network http://sdrn.us/   Buy a Powertac Flashlight, use RSWC as the discount code and save 15% www.powertac.com/RSWC   SABRE Red Pepper Spray  https://lddy.no/1iq1n   Or listen on: iTunes/Apple podcasts https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/riding-shotgun-with-charlie/id1275691565

This Day in Legal History: Medicare Bill SignedOn July 30, 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Medicare bill into law, marking a significant milestone in American healthcare. This landmark legislation, part of Johnson's Great Society programs, aimed to address the healthcare needs of the nation's elderly population. With the stroke of his pen, Johnson established Medicare, a federal program providing comprehensive health insurance to Americans aged 65 and older. The bill was signed at the Truman Library in Independence, Missouri, with former President Harry S. Truman by Johnson's side, recognizing Truman's early efforts to promote national health insurance.Medicare went into effect the following year, in 1966, offering hospital and medical insurance to millions of senior citizens. This historic act transformed the landscape of healthcare in the United States, ensuring that older Americans would no longer face financial ruin due to medical expenses. Medicare's introduction also set the stage for future expansions, including the addition of prescription drug coverage and the establishment of Medicare Advantage plans. Over the decades, Medicare has become a cornerstone of the U.S. healthcare system, providing vital health services to millions of Americans and significantly reducing poverty among the elderly. The signing of the Medicare bill remains a pivotal moment in the pursuit of healthcare equity in the United States.A federal appeals court overturned a $79 million attorneys' fee award in T-Mobile US Inc.'s $350 million settlement of a data breach lawsuit. The US Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit ruled that the lower court abused its discretion by approving an excessive fee award in a case that settled quickly and without extensive legal proceedings. The court reversed the fee award, reinstated the objection of class member Cassie Hampe, and remanded the case for further proceedings. The litigation stemmed from a 2021 data breach affecting 76.6 million people, with settlement approval sought in July 2022. Judge Brian C. Wimes initially approved the fee award in June 2023, dismissing objections from Hampe and Connie Pentz as abusive. However, the appeals court found no evidence of bad faith or extortion by Hampe and criticized the lower court for not adjusting the fee award based on the hours worked by class counsel. The court noted that class counsel's fee request amounted to an hourly rate of $7,000 to $9,500, deemed unreasonable. The case was sent back for further consideration, with the involvement of multiple law firms representing the parties.T-Mobile Deal's $79 Million Attorneys' Fee Award Gets OverturnedBig Law firms are reevaluating their strategies following a ruling in the Eastern District of Virginia that barred Vinson & Elkins from representing wood-pellet maker Enviva Inc. in its bankruptcy due to a conflict of interest with private equity firm Riverstone Investment Group LLC. This decision has raised concerns about potential conflicts when firms represent both private equity sponsors and their distressed portfolio companies in Chapter 11 proceedings. The ruling could force law firms to choose between lucrative private equity deals and bankruptcy cases, potentially reshaping their business models. The court rejected Vinson & Elkins' proposal to separate their work for Riverstone and Enviva, citing ethical concerns. This outcome could lead to more aggressive challenges by the US Trustee and might require law firms to adopt stricter conflict management practices. Although some view the decision as specific to the case's facts, it signals a need for firms to better navigate ethical responsibilities. The ruling has already influenced how law firms approach bankruptcy cases involving private equity-backed companies, with future decisions possibly reaching higher courts for further clarification. Despite this, experts like Nancy Rapoport and Bruce A. Markell believe that Big Law firms will adapt and continue to thrive by finding compliant ways to manage conflicts of interest.Big Law Confronts Tail Risk Threat to Private Equity BankruptcyA New York state judge has ruled against appointing an outside monitor for the National Rifle Association (NRA) but banned former CEO Wayne LaPierre from serving as an officer or director for ten years. The decision by Justice Joel Cohen of the Manhattan Supreme Court comes from a four-year-old civil case initiated by state Attorney General Letitia James. Although a mixed outcome, the ruling followed a trial stage where jurors found LaPierre and others guilty of financial mismanagement, including funding LaPierre's lavish lifestyle. LaPierre was ordered to repay $4.35 million to the NRA, and former finance chief Wilson Phillips was ordered to repay $2 million.James sued the NRA in August 2020, citing greed, poor oversight, and cronyism. Following the ruling, both parties were directed to negotiate governance changes that could reduce the NRA's board size and facilitate new board candidacies. Despite the lawsuit, the NRA has perceived the case as politically motivated. The NRA, founded in 1871, has seen its influence wane, including within the Republican Party, as its membership and revenue have declined. NRA President Bob Barr acknowledged the jury's findings and reiterated the organization's commitment to good governance. LaPierre, who resigned just before the trial's first stage, has not commented on the ruling.Judge won't require monitor for NRA, bans ex-chief LaPierre for 10 years | ReutersThe American Bar Association (ABA) has issued its first formal ethics opinion on the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) by lawyers, emphasizing the need for adherence to ethical obligations. The ABA's ethics and professional responsibility committee highlighted that lawyers must ensure competence, protect client confidentiality, communicate appropriately, and handle fees ethically when utilizing AI technology. While AI can enhance efficiency in legal tasks such as research, document drafting, and analysis, it also poses risks like producing inaccurate results. Lawyers are advised to prevent unintended disclosure of client information and consider informing clients about their use of AI tools. The ABA's opinion serves as guidance for interpreting model rules, although these are not binding. The opinion cautioned against relying on AI-generated outputs without verification, noting instances where lawyers have cited nonexistent cases or inaccurate analyses, leading to potential misrepresentations in court.Recent cases illustrate the consequences of unverified AI use, with a federal judge in Virginia considering sanctions for a filing that included fictitious cases and fabricated quotations. While some courts require lawyers to disclose their use of AI, others, like the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, have declined to adopt such rules.State bar associations have also been developing their own AI guidelines, recognizing the rapidly evolving nature of the technology. These reforms aim to enhance protections for minors on social media platforms. COPPA 2.0 will prohibit targeted advertising to minors, restrict data collection without consent, and allow parents and children to delete their information from social media. KOSA will establish a "duty of care" for social media companies to design safer platforms for minors.Despite bipartisan support in the Senate, with an 86-1 procedural vote, the bills face uncertainty in the Republican-controlled House, currently on recess until September. While some social media executives support KOSA, others, including leaders from Meta and TikTok, have expressed concerns. Critics, including tech industry groups and the American Civil Liberties Union, argue that the bills could limit access to important content for minors. In response to these concerns, the bill's language was amended, reducing the enforcement role of state attorneys general. Riding Shotgun With Charlie #208 Lucretia Hughes Klucken   This is a name you want to know. And a person you want to follow. I learned about her with the Women for Gun Rights group. I saw her testify in front of Congress. She lost her son to gang violence but she didn't turn into an anti-gun red shirt. She donned the teal and knew that it wasn't a gun that killed her son. I got to have Lucretia in the stagecoach at an event in New Jersey recently. She is an unstoppable force to be reckoned with.    Lucretia grew up in Georgia in a small country town. Her father raised her and her eight siblings in a junkyard. Whatever the boys would do, she would do so she was considered a tomboy. She had three fathers: one was a leader of the Black Panthers and the other two were in the military during Vietnam. Her grandparents were the first interracial couple in the area. She grew up shooting and hunting like her brothers.  By the time she was 20, she had four kids.    She worked hard to make sure that her kids didn't grow up in the situation she did. She lived in the hood and wanted to get out. Of course, she grew up in a Democrat household as she thought black people were supposed to vote that way. But she realized the Democrat party wasn't doing anything to help her. Being involved in gangs and the thug lifestyle, going to funerals of friends, she knew she was the only person that could make changes and get her family out of that lifestyle. She worked hard to get her and her kids out of that way of life.    When the NRA Annual Meeting was in Atlanta, she went at the encouragement of a friend. While there alone, she was talking with lots of folks. A photographer saw her and realized she had something. He dared her to go talk to “that short man over there”. It just happened to be Wayne LaPierre. She didn't know this. She told him her story and he gave her his phone number. Six months later he reached out and invited her to Texas to be part of the Board of Directors nominating committee.    She is also associated with the Women for Gun Rights group. Being around women like Dianna Muller (RSWC #059 & #164) and Amanda Suffecool (RSWC #009 & #180), she's learned a lot. She's had to learn to refine her story, skills, and be a positive role model. WGR help prepare her to speak in front of Congress and share the story about her son being murdered.    One of the things Lucretia does is a daily show, from 5-7 pm et, which has been growing to reach hundreds of thousands of people. Through the show, she met her husband. The show is called Real New with Lucretia Hughes. One of the people watching her show was Star Parker. She's the author of Pimps, Whores, & Welfare Brats. Star went from a tough life into a conservative. Lucretia's story is very similar. They did have a chance to meet and become friends. .    She's got some amazing stories, like driving up to DC for an event, with a pistol on the passenger's seat, and going up a one way road the wrong way. Fortunately, she was pulled over by a black police officer who was also from Georgia and he advised her to go home. She talks about getting off the welfare system and working hard to do so. She worked in federal penitentiaries in the medical department. These are the amazing stories I loved to get out for all to hear.     Besides the show, she's also working on running for the NRA Board of Directors. She was on the nominating committee that helped Dean Cain and Mark Keith Robinson get voted onto the BOD. Like I said, she's a force. When she spoke at the CNJFO/WGR dinner, she got everyone going. If you search her name, you'll find her from Turning Point USA to Real Clear Politics to FOX News. And now RSWC.  Favorite quotes: “I won't bow down. And I won't kiss no ring.” “I learned to stop beating up on myself because no one is perfect.” “I got tired of looking at death.” “They changed a lot of women's minds and their hearts. And a lot of women are now wanting gun rights.” Lucretia Hughes Facebook https://www.facebook.com/lucretia.b.hughes   Instagram https://www.instagram.com/reallucretiahughes/   Rumble Real News with Lucretia Hughes https://rumble.com/user/RealNewsWithLucretiaHughes   FallBackUSA2 Shop https://fallbackusa2.myshopify.com/ Second Amendment Foundation https://secure.anedot.com/saf/donate?sc=RidingShotgun    Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms https://www.ccrkba.org/     Please support the Riding Shotgun With Charlie sponsors and supporters.    Buy RSWC & GunGram shirts & hoodies, stickers & patches, and mugs at the store! http://ridingshotgunwithcharlie.com/rswc-shop/   Dennis McCurdy Author, Speaker, Firewalker http://www.find-away.com/   Self Defense Radio Network http://sdrn.us/   Buy a Powertac Flashlight, use RSWC as the discount code and save 15% www.powertac.com/RSWC   SABRE Red Pepper Spray  https://lddy.no/1iq1n

This week, we're talking to one of the men who led the effort to reform the NRA from within. Phillip Journey has been an outspoken critic of the corruption that unfolded at the gun group during Wayne LaPierre's tenure, and he's been trying to fix the problems from within for nearly half a decade now. That work appears to be coming to fruition now. He and other reformers propelled alternative candidates to three of the NRA's top four leadership positions last Monday, including LaPierre's old position. Journey expressed optimism about the outcome of the leadership elections. He believes the NRA has a real chance to turn itself around and avoid a government-appointed monitor in the second half of its New York corruption trial. Although, he also admitted he doesn't have direct say over how exactly the group will move forward in a number of areas. He also cautioned that the NRA doesn't have a ton of time to work with. The group's financials are worsening, and those woes even forced it to sell off $44 million in assets at the beginning of the year. Journey urged people to help the organization through the downturn so reformers could have a chance to enact their planned changes. Special Guest: Phillip Journey.

We also discuss what the leadership turnover says about the group's ability to reform itself moving forward, especially in light of its latest financial reports showing continued budget and fundraising woes. Plus, we cover the Supreme Court's decision not to take up a case on Maryland's assault weapon ban and why there's a good shot a conservative justice will issue the majority opinion on bump stocks.

The proposed settlement revises the plan to include 114 homes on 65 acres, with the rest as open space. NRA Whistle-Blower on the Group's Corruption Verdict, Path Forward

Last week, a jury found the NRA did not safeguard its charitable fund or those who raised concerns about how they were being spent on former CEO Wayne LaPierre's lavish personal expenses. This week, we have one of those whistle-blowers on the show to give his view of the verdict as well as the group's future. Former NRA board member Judge Phillip Journey was among the eight insiders the jury said didn't receive protection when he spoke out about the group's mismanagement. He said the jury came to the correct conclusion. And he argued Judge Joel Cohen should appoint a monitor to make sure corruption is rooted out of the organization for good. Journey said he was sympathetic toward criticism of New York Attorney General Letitia James's (D.) political motivations. But he also said he had no choice in testifying at the trial, and the facts of the case were plainly against the NRA's current and former leadership. He argued drastic change is necessary for the NRA to survive and return to form. He explained the platform he and three other board candidates are running on in the current NRA election. Journey said he hopes the verdict and LaPierre's resignation will convince many current board members to join the reform effort, but acknowledged he hasn't gotten very far to this point and it's likely to remain an uphill internal fight. Plus, Contributing Writer Jake Fogleman and I dissect oral arguments in the Supreme Court's bump stock ban case. Special Guest: Phillip Journey.

Nonprofitnewsfeed.com Title: Nonprofit News Highlights: IVF Information, NRA Verdict, and Deforestation Crisis In this week's edition of Nonprofit News Feed, we dive into three major stories that are making headlines in the nonprofit sector. From the legal implications of IVF to the NRA's guilty verdict, and the alarming increase in deforestation, these stories highlight the ongoing challenges and opportunities for nonprofits in our society. Join us as we explore the key details and implications of each story. IVF Information: A Legal Debate with Nonprofit Ramifications In Alabama, a recent ruling by the Supreme Court has put multiple IVF clinics on edge. The court's decision defines frozen embryos as legally "unborn children," raising concerns and potential criminal repercussions for clinics offering IVF treatments. This ruling has sparked a heated debate, with house Republicans and other political figures coming out against it. Beyond the political debates, non-profit organizations like Planned Parenthood are advocating against the ruling, fearing its consequences on abortion rights and personhood laws. Planned Parenthood highlights the potential ripple effect of such rulings across the country, emphasizing the need for continued advocacy and support for reproductive rights. The NRA Verdict: Implications for Gun Rights Advocacy In a high-profile civil corruption trial led by New York Attorney General Letitia James, the NRA and its executives, including Wayne LaPierre, have been found guilty of violating their duties and causing monetary harm to the organization. The verdict could potentially result in permanent barring from charity board service for the defendants, signaling a new era of oversight in the NRA's financial affairs. While the NRA remains a powerful lobbying group for gun rights, with significant policy implications, the verdict raises questions about its future impact. The long-term consequences of the barring from charity board service in New York remain uncertain, with potential repercussions on the organization's ability to operate and mobilize resources. Deforestation Crisis: A Global Challenge for Climate Change The world's efforts to curb deforestation have hit a snag, with a 4% increase in global deforestation in 2022. This alarming trend surpasses the annual target set to eliminate deforestation by 2030 by 21%. The majority of deforestation occurs in tropical regions, posing significant challenges in the battle against climate change. The political and economic challenges faced by these countries make it difficult to protect the environment while addressing other pressing issues. Adequate funding for forest conservation falls short of requirements, hindering progress in eradicating deforestation. The need to balance economic development and environmental preservation necessitates a nuanced approach to find sustainable solutions. Khan Academy's AI Integration: Transforming Education In a feel-good story, Khan Academy, the renowned education platform, has leveraged AI to create an innovative tool called Con Amigo. This AI tutor integrates with Khan Academy's educational resources, offering personalized learning experiences and meeting students where they are in their educational journey. Con Amigo addresses the challenge of differentiation in the classroom, providing specialized attention to individual students' needs. With proper guardrails and a commitment to responsible AI integration, Khan Academy's Con Amigo has the potential to transform how students learn and improve access to quality education. In conclusion, these four stories represent crucial developments in the nonprofit world. The IVF ruling raises critical questions about reproductive rights and the implications of personhood laws. The NRA verdict highlights the consequences of mismanagement within nonprofit organizations and its impact on advocacy efforts. The deforestation crisis demands urgent action to address climate change and protect biodiversity. Finally, Khan Academy's AI integration showcases the potential of technology to enhance educational experiences and promote equity in education. Stay tuned for more updates and insights in the evolving landscape of the nonprofit sector. Together, we can create a positive impact in our communities and address the pressing challenges of our time.

We finally have a ruling in NY's corruption case against the NRA, which presents them with a significant opportunity. Also, we let AI write a summary of this podcast in the style of other podcasts, and it turned out super overblown and melodramatic. Here it is: "Discover the seismic impact of the New York Attorney General's case against the National Rifle Association, where the powerful winds of justice have swept through the corridors of the NRA, leaving an uncertain future for Wayne LaPierre and his associates. As the gavel comes down, join us for a compelling narrative that weaves through the financial consequences, the potential for a court-appointed overseer, and the political shockwaves reverberating across New York's landscape. We analyze the Attorney General Letitia James' steadfast pursuit, compare it to other high-profile New York cases like Donald Trump's, and consider what this means for the NRA's path forward in a post-LaPierre world. Then, we pivot to the crossroads where the NRA stands today, poised between revitalization and obsolescence. Our discussion takes a hard look at the challenges ahead, emphasizing the urgent need for the organization's leadership to enact decisive reforms and redefine their mission to captivate a new generation of gun enthusiasts. We critically evaluate the NRA's strategic positioning, suggesting a bold reversal: to become immovable in their core gun rights advocacy while evolving in their cultural and educational outreach to align with technological advancements and shifting societal interests. Tune in as we offer a blueprint for the NRA's survival, with insights on appealing to a broader audience and securing a place in the future of American gun culture."

Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak with Neil Kraus, professor of political science at the University of Wisconsin, River Falls, to discuss his recent book The Fantasy Economy: Neoliberalism, Inequality, and the Education Reform Movement. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Israel's continuing strikes in Lebanon, the growing death count in Gaza, Congress averting a government shutdown and funding wars, Medicare, Wayne LaPierre's reign over the NRA, and another brewing Boebert scandal, before parsing through the new footage from January 6 (now three years out), and the evolution of the GOP's attempt to spin it. Neil Kraus then joins, diving right into the fantasy of the neoliberal consensus that has reshaped the economy, and our education system, in the interests of corporations and the wealthy, exploring, in particular, how it has manufactured an antagonistic relationship between the public and our education system. Expanding on this, Professor Kraus tackles the myths that the political class has perpetrated against education, pinning the blame on the system for everything from employment and wages to failing industry, before stepping back to tackle the failures of these myths, and how they obscure the role of general economic conditions. After assessing the neoliberal-libertarian coalition in the attack on public and higher education, Neil, Sam, and Emma discuss whether we are at the end of the neoliberal consensus, and what it will take to swing the political fight over education. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma discuss Donald Trump's theories on magnets, Obamacare, and the Civil War – each growing in concern – watch Mehdi Hasan's final sign-off on NBC, and get another British masterclass on the weaponization of white feminism. Brett Weinstein and Dave Rubin discuss the trauma of being blocked by Elon Musk, Cory from Branton breaks Sam's heart, and Rocko in the UK expands on the implications of insurrection, plus, your calls and IMs! It is sad to watch the organization I love, tip toe around issues and avoid the spotlight. When I was with NRA TV we, the NRA, were constantly fighting. The members embraced the fight, the fought with us. Now the NRA seems to be quietly drifting into oblivion. I used to say the NRA is the most powerful civil rights organization on the face of the planet. But lawyers, and board running scared, have taken over. With the New York Trial against NRA leader Wayne Lapierre just a few days away, now is the time to come out swinging. Get back to the basics. This episode is a road map of how to do it. The NRA is too big and too important to fail. It's Wednesday, December 27th, A.D. 2023. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Christmas Eve Nigerian Christian massacre Armed Muslim groups killed at least 96 people on Christmas Eve in Nigeria's central Plateau State. The attackers targeted twelve villages and burned over 200 homes. Another attack in the state on Sunday killed 16 more people. Christians in the area are under constant threat from suspected jihadists. Village Elder Yusuf Ibrahim told International Christian Concern, “We need more security in the community to celebrate Christmas very well. Yes, we are under attack by (radical) Fulani [Muslim] tribesmen. Pray for us.” Nigeria is ranked sixth on the Open Doors' World Watch List of nations where it is most difficult to be a Christian. Over 50,000 Christians have been killed in the country's Central Belt region over the last 20 years. Cameroon Catholic bishops condemn sexual perversion In nearby Cameroon, Africa, Catholic bishops are taking a stand against sexually perverted lifestyles. A recent declaration from the bishops says, “Homosexuality falsifies and corrupts human anthropology and trivializes sexuality, marriage and the family, the foundations of society. … We therefore declare non-compliant any form of blessing, public or private, that tends to recognize ‘same-sex couples' as a state of life.” The African bishops are responding to a recent statement from Pope Francis that permits some kind of blessing for homosexual couples. 2 Peter 2:1 says, “But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction.” African and Asian illegals crossing U.S.-Mexico border Speaking of Africa, illegal immigration from Africa and Asia to the U.S. is growing rapidly.  Officials encountered 43% more migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border from outside Latin America and the Caribbean this year compared to last year. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is calling it “the highest level of mass migration since World War II.” Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson  sent a letter to President Joe Biden last Thursday, calling on him to take executive action for border security. Johnson wrote, “Statutory reforms designed to restore operational control at our southern border must be enacted, but the crisis at our southern border has deteriorated to such an extent that significant action can wait no longer. It must start now, and it must start with you.” National Archives Museum tried to censor pro-life message Last week, pro-lifers won a $10,000 settlement with the U.S. National Archives. Back in January, participants in the 50th annual March for Life in Washington, D.C. visited the National Archives Museum. Personnel there told them they had to leave unless they removed or covered the pro-life messages on their clothing.  With the help of the American Center for Law and Justice, the pro-lifers were able to challenge the National Archives on religious liberty grounds. The legal group said, “Our victory today ensures that they will be free from harassment and that their First Amendment rights will be protected should they choose to visit the National Archives and view the very documents that protect those sacred rights.” America is constitutional carry of guns majority nation Fox News reports the U.S. became a constitutional carry-majority nation this year. NRA executive vice president and CEO Wayne LaPierre told Fox News Digital, “The gun control lobby and their allies pledged to dismantle self-defense laws and the Second Amendment. That strategy has backfired. In 2021, there were 16 states with NRA Constitutional Carry. Just three years later, there are now 27 states.” Last year ended with Georgia becoming the 25th state to allow citizens to carry a concealed firearm without a permit. Florida joined in March and was followed soon after by Nebraska. Many of the constitutional carry states are concentrated in the south and midwest. Christmas miracle: Arizona street preacher out of ICU after getting shot in head And finally, God blessed one Christian family with their own Christmas miracle.  An Arizona man is making stunning progress after being shot in the head last month while street preaching. Twenty-six-year-old Hans Schmidt was rushed to the hospital, and doctors didn't give him much of a chance of surviving. Now, he is out of the ICU, but still not able to fully communicate. His wife, Zulya, said, “We're hopeful, and we're praying, and we're contending for a supernatural recovery. But there's just so much unknown still, so much uncertainty. Every day we've been able to witness a miracle.” You can support the family through a GoFundMe link in our transcript today at TheWorldview.com.  So far, people across America have contributed $64,153 toward Hans' medical expenses and their goal of raising $100,000. Psalm 56:13 says, “For You have delivered my soul from death, yes, my feet from falling, that I may walk before God in the light of life.” Close And that's The Worldview in 5 Minutes on this Wednesday, December 27th in the year of our Lord 2023. Subscribe by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com.
