They talk about kid-focused scams on Roblox and gaming platforms, grooming and sextortion, and why open conversations help kids report scary messages. They also cover scams aimed at older adults, including government and tech-support pop-ups, romance scams, investment and crypto fraud, QR code traps, and fake mail. Their key tips include slowing down, not clicking links, verifying numbers on official sites, using family code words, enabling protections like Bark and two-factor authentication, monitoring accounts, and reporting fraud. Dogs Don't Bark at Parked Cars: Your GPS in an Era of Hyper-Change by Jeff Piersall https://www.amazon.com/dp/1683504461 Linkedin.com/in/jeffpiersall Some attribute it to Aristotle, but whether the great Greek philosopher said it or not doesn't affect its timeless truth. “If you want to avoid criticism, all you have to do is say nothing, do nothing and be nothing.” If on the other hand, you decide your life is purposed for something worthy and being on the playing field is preferred to sitting in the stands, there is something you are sure to encounter; what Jeff Piersall and Eric Wright call “barking dogs.” Dogs Don't Bark at Parked Cars illustrates this encounter as the voices that find fault, who don't think it's possible, who are unable to see a future alive with opportunities waiting to be seized. They are the ones governed by fear instead of faith. Unfortunately, many times the loudest of these barking dogs are kenneled right in most people's own heads. For Jeff and Eric, that priceless quality is wisdom. It goes beyond knowledge or aptitude and transcends this era of cultural and technological hyper-change, with principles that are timeless.

Physics for Everyone, Lecture 4. The Beating Heart of Modern Physics: The Dog Who Didn't Bark in the Night.

This lecture, recorded before lecture 5, which was released a month ago, actually more naturally follows it, which is why releasing it after lecture 5, while unintended, actually makes sense. In the last lecture I described the most important unification in all of physics, the unification of electricity and magnetism, a unification into electromagnetism by James Clerk Maxwell in the 19th century. Because of its elegance, and its overpowering utility, the theory of electromagnetism has provided the prototype for all modern physical theories that have followed it. As I show in this lecture, the form of electromagnetism is governed by a new mathematical symmetry in nature, called gauge symmetry. It turns out the existence of this symmetry is profoundly important, and it not only governs the exact form of the theory, it turns out to govern the form of all the known forces of nature. Before we get to gauge symmetry, I want to explore more generally what is meant by symmetry in physics, and then I want to redo elementary physics by thinking about symmetry. In my mind, the fact that basic physics is introduced without reference to the symmetries of nature is perhaps the greatest failing in the teaching of modern physics. Concepts like energy and momentum have relevance because of fundamental symmetries of space and time. The facts that energy is ‘conserved', and momentum is ‘conserved' in systems, which rigorously fix determine the form of Newton's laws of motion, are often introduced as if they are dictates on high, like the ten commandments. However, once one understands that these arise from symmetries of nature, the fact that these quantities exist and are conserved, becomes immediate, as the remarkable mathematician Emmy Noether showed at the beginning of the 20th century. Finally, as important as mathematical symmetries are in governing physical laws, it is equally striking that even if these fundamental symmetries exist in nature, they may not be manifest in particular situations. For example, gravity and electromagnetism don't distinguish between left and right, but if I look around my room, the left side of my room looks very different than the right side. This is an example of what is called ‘broken symmetry', one of the most subtle and impactful notions at the basis of what is now called The Standard Model of Particle Physics. In this lecture I review all of these ideas, which are essential if we are to go beyond the physics of the 19th century to understand the physics of the 20th and 21st centuries. Enjoy. Episode 264: BARK maintains more than 800 subscription price points because it has promised customers that their price will not increase as long as they remain subscribers. CEO Matt Meeker explains why honoring that commitment matters, even when tariffs, public-market expectations, and pressure on margins make it costly. Matt started BarkBox in 2011 after struggling to find breed-appropriate toys for his large Great Dane, Hugo, in New York City pet stores. The original idea was simple: Send dog owners a monthly box of toys and treats selected for their dog's size. The first shipment consisted of 78 boxes. With no paid marketing, the business grew through word of mouth.  Customers soon wanted to buy more of the products their dogs loved. That led BARK into individual product sales and, after Target approached the company in 2017, nationwide retail. BARK now sells through more than 50,000 retail doors globally. But expansion came with a cost: Retail gave BARK far less information about who bought its products and why. BARK became a public company in June of 2021. Matt describes how investor expectations shifted his team's attention toward quarterly financial measures that could conflict with investments in long-term customer value.  That conflict became urgent when Matt returned after 16 months away from the CEO role. The company had lost $58 million in the prior years and burned through nearly $200 million in cash. After a three-year effort, BARK reached $5 million in positive EBITDA, only to confront a potential $145 million tariff headwind. BARK looked for other ways to absorb those costs while honoring the price and value it had promised to subscribers. That commitment creates real complexity: The company's engineers must maintain more than 800 legacy prices, including one early subscriber who still pays just $16 a month. Matt explains why he accepts that burden. BARK asks customers to commit to the company, so he believes the company should match that commitment. More broadly, BARK's experience shows why companies often benefit when they protect customer value, even when conventional financial measures cannot capture the full return. We thought maybe there might be a hundred customers out there who subscribed to this thing, we'll learn how a commerce business works, and won't that be fun? That was our ambition: to build something fun and make some people and their dogs happy."  [7:00] "When we started, there were about 38 million households in the US with dogs. Today, that's about 66 million. So that grew really fast." [11:00] "When people said, 'My dog loved this [toy],' it often was followed with, 'Where do I get more of this?' And so that was just an easy leap of us saying, 'OK, here's where you can get more: right here at our shop.'" [15:00] "We went to the lengths of hiring, basically, spies, photographers, and people on the ground to go in. Mystery shoppers, essentially. Watch the aisles, interview customers, and talk about: Why are you buying that thing? What brought you in here? Why is this appealing to you? Because we were just so hungry for information about what's going on in that environment. And that, to me, is still the most difficult part of the retail experience." Leave a Message for ScottWhy does a perfectly normal walk with your dog suddenly turn into barking, lunging, and chaos the moment another dog appears? In this episode, canine behavior consultant Scott Sheaffer explains why barking at other dogs is one of the most misunderstood behavior problems owners face. You'll learn why “leash reactivity” is often only a description of the behavior rather than the diagnosis, why fear is frequently the real driving force, and why understanding the underlying cause is far more important than simply stopping the barking.Scott also discusses the concept of behavioral rehearsal, common mistakes that unintentionally strengthen the problem, and why today's standard of care focuses on changing a dog's emotional response rather than suppressing outward behavior. If your dog struggles around other dogs on walks, this episode will help you better understand what's happening and what effective treatment typically looks like. You can visit USADogBehavior.com for lots of dog behavior resources—almost all of them are free—including videos, blog articles, and past podcast episodes to help you understand your dog.If you'd like to learn more about working with Scott, please visit his website below.Find us at USADogBehavior.com.Follow us on Facebook.DisclaimerThis podcast is for educational purposes only and is not a substitute for professional advice. What to listen for:“Barking should be under stimulus control. It only happens when I cue it – or when the dog finds target odor – and nothing else.” Our hosts, Robin Greubel and Stacy Barnett, unpack the reality behind bark alerts in detection work. They challenge the idea that a barking dog is always impressive or useful, and ask the critical question: can we train a bark alert versus should we? Drawing on real-world deployment experience, they explain when bark alerts are truly required (such as FEMA USAR) and when they can create unnecessary risks, public misinterpretation, and extra maintenance for both dog and handler. They break down bark alerts as complex behavior chains involving position at source, duration, distance, and continuous barking, and show how easily “criteria creep” leads to dogs leaving odor, orienting to the handler, or only offering a token bark. Using the “dog's wallet” behavior-economics metaphor, they connect heat, terrain, fatigue, and stress to whether the dog has enough “budget” left to bark at all. The discussion also covers demand versus arousal barking, why barking must stay under tight stimulus control, and why for many teams, a solid stationary response may be a smarter, more sustainable choice than chasing a bark alert that is often easy to improperly train and hard to properly maintain. Key Topics:•       Why a Barking Dog Isn't Always Sexy (00:00)•       Bark Alert as a Complex Behavior of Duration and Distance (02:31)•       Can We Versus Should We When Choosing a Bark Alert (10:23)•       When Bark Alerts Are Required Versus When They Are Not (11:19)•       Placement of Reinforcement and The Mouse Hole Barrel Setup (14:02)•       Criteria Creep and Dogs Leaving Source or Orienting to Handler (18:36)•       Behavior Economics and The Five Dollar Dog Wallet Metaphor (31:03)•       Demand Barking, Arousal Barking, and Stimulus Control of Barking (25:30)•       Real World Limits: Heat, Fatigue, Terrain, and When Dogs Have No Gas Left to Bark (36:25)•       Why Bark Alerts Are Easy to Train Badly And Hard to Maintain Well (34:30) Resources:•       Link to training an Area Search Dog, which includes the module on a bark alert (and has a worksheet!) https://k9sensusacademy.thinkific.com/products/courses/areasearchdogWe want to hear from you:Check out the K9 Detection Collaborative FB page and comment on the episode post!K9Sensus Detection Dog Trainer AcademyK9Sensus Foundation can be found on Facebook and Instagram. Your kid doesn't need to “meet a stranger” anymore to be targeted. A single friend request, a few minutes of flattery, and one impulsive photo can turn into financial sextortion, threats to expose them to classmates, and a level of shame most adults underestimate. We sit down with Seth, a Texas ICAC detective, to break down the real-world tactics predators use online: where they hunt (Snapchat, Instagram, TikTok, Roblox, and gaming platforms), how they build trust fast, and why they almost always push kids into private or disappearing-message apps. Seth explains why paying sextortion demands doesn't stop anything, what evidence to preserve, and why parents should avoid confronting suspects so investigators can take over accounts and build a clean case. Then we go deeper into the uncomfortable part: most child sex abuse victims know their offender. We talk grooming behaviors that can look “nice” on the surface (favoritism, gifts, special access), how to think about risk without paranoia, and how tools like parental controls (including Bark) can alert you to sexual content, self-harm language, or dangerous conversations. We also point to practical resources like NCMEC's Take It Down, and we share what to say to your child when they finally tell you the truth. If you care about online child safety, sextortion prevention, and protecting teens from grooming, hit subscribe, share this with a parent who needs it, and leave a review so more families find it before it's their crisis. The new policing system will connect 487 cameras equipped with AI-powered identity and vehicle tracking and send all video feeds into a new centralized command center. To support the rollout, Chinese-backed regional security partners are providing financial and technical support for the project and have pledged to expand the camera grid in the future. Cambodian officials say the project will protect residents and tourists. But in a country where dissent is overtly and systematically punished, these new AI-powered systems can easily double as a surveillance machine capable of identifying anyone who criticizes the ruling party. This week we are joined by Daniel Schwalbe, Chief Information Security Officer & Head of Investigations at DomainTools, discussing their work on "ZionSiphon OT Malware First Attempts? Psyops? Both?" Researchers at DomainTools take a closer look at ZionSiphon, a purported operational technology malware sample targeting the water sector, and find that despite its alarming appearance, it lacks many of the capabilities needed to function as a credible cyber-physical weapon. They break down the malware's architecture, its operational shortcomings, and why it may be more of a prototype or proof of concept than a deployable threat. With heightened concern surrounding attacks on critical infrastructure amid the ongoing U.S.-Iran conflict, the research offers timely insight into separating genuine OT threats from overhyped malware.
