What— is that a safe word?! DANDELION. Ice cream. Ice cream. Gotta get. Are you looking for ice cream. Yeah, I— yeah. …I know where to find ice cream. Well yeah, but. I got ice cream. Yesteryear was long and fowl… Your show makes me very unhappy. My show makes you unhappy? Yes. So does yours. So— I think we're even. What! My show makes you unhappy? Yes, I hate it. You hate the tonight show? How can you hate the tonight show? I don't. I hate you. I—what? I hate you. Okay? Okay. Why! You ruined SNL. I what. Killed the whole show. Excuse me? You're excused. Wh— I gotta go— be mediocre. What? You know the feeling. I— [exits] … … [lights turn off] *the festival project ™ Believe it or not, It's not about you I dream up my perfect man And he's Lilly white And he's all for me And without a name And he's ten foot tall And he don't like blonde And we're all from God So believe it or not, my muse I'm blū This is not about you; I just wrote a love song I am an Amazon man An Amazon man I am an Amazon man An Amazon man Why, hello Alice! That's right, I'm Alice! Alice? Well, yes, hello! Why, no! I was just the Cheshire. Right you are! And right you were! My idea, of.course, And yours! I had intended to pay for today's ride… BLŨ fluidly jumps the turnstile. Uh— But the train was approaching as I got to the station, and the bass music ringing in my ears was telling me. Well, I just don't have time to waste today… Night, Benga Oops. I did intend to put the five specially marked bills— ‘my comedy dollars, into the machine and onto my Metro Card. Into the machine– because they were marked— onto my Metro Card, because I was sick of jumping the turnstile. V.O. Whatever makes gross demon people want to sit down next to me on the subway, though, is beyond me. I was. A particular stone, however, forced me to wonder— Is she your type? You will learn. Aiming a bit low for someone perched so high. V.O. It was the Capsulous Illuminatus— because the Illuminatus Mondi had been captured, by, well… THE COSMIC AVENGER THE STONE IS MINE! NOW I SHALL RULE THE WORLD! — or at least, the greater social economy. PASSERBY Gross! COSMIC AVENGER AHEM, pardon me. [the cosmic avenger has shapeshifted into a very grotesque New York BUM for the purpose of this exercise] V.O. (Um, what is the purpose of this exercise?) COSMIC AVENGER Neveryoumind! [beat] COSMIC AVENGER (CONT'D) DOG! DOG Yessir. COSMIC AVENGER Lend me your vessel. Why? Because you're a talking dog, which is just above “ragged bum” on the hierarchy, and I need to transition back to my body. [a passerby stares at the bum and the talking dog] DOG I mean, … “Bark” Darnit. Ugh! DOG Find somebody else to do it. Like an actual bum's dog; I live, mind you in the Upper East Side and by the way, i told you I'd do this so you'd tape $20 on my collar so the Wag guy thinks my owner tipped him well— COSMIC AVENGER —or at all— DOG CONT'D Or at all— and feeds me more! COSMIC AVENGER (desperately) You know what? Fine. DOG I got a buddy— Darnell, up in the Bronx that might do it, COSMIC AVENGER His name is Darnell? DOG Nah, it's ‘Buddy', but Darnell is his “friend” COSMIC AVENGER (Understanding) Hence the talking– DOG Are you not fully caught up to speed in the dynamics of shapeshifting? COSMIC AVENGER Not all the way, no. DOG Which is why this is dangerous. COSMIC AVENGER I second! DOG Now, put $25 dollars in my collar, and walk me up to the Bronx, and then back to the Upper East Side so I can fetch with my Wag guy and eat steak tartare! COSMIC AVENGER Steak tartare?!?! DOG And not in that order — put the $25 on my collar last, actually— Like in the safety and comfort of my crate— COSMIC AVENGER You said $20! DOG And now I'm saying $25, because this guy stinks, and not in the way that I like. COSMIC AVENGER You're right. DOG Because I'm better than you. COSMIC AVENGER But not really. DOG Yes, really. COSMIC AVENGER $25!? Are you not a millionaire, shapeshifter?? COSMIC AVENGER Fine! Gosh! Now, let's — Suddenly I was rush with the anxiety of performance— it was Bedford Avenue ona Saturday morning— which reminded me… it was Saturday, and I had been doing weird shit on Saturday, almost ritualistically. l…. Somehow, automatically, I seemed to get off of the train with no trouble at just the right stop.— writing was a time jump forward. I slowed my roll to catch my breath after the stairs and kept speed behind a sea of beautiful dogs and beautiful children's families. Ugh. The good part of town— I wanted to live somewhere like this, but alas… Apparently something was wrong with me. It was an excellent exercise in energy, but l it was also the music telling me to run, instead of walk— I was still being stalked— some cheap bottle blonde was sent in front of me, mocking. This always happened in the good part of town— the [redacted] effect. Yo, get that thing away from me I hate your guts Get away from me I start counting on the way out 20, 40, 60 I start counting all my time And all my dimes on the way out Alright, where's Seth Meyers? Why?! Whose asking? I Am. Why? Don't repeat yourself Cause this dude's really starting to piss me off. The old man waits at the crosswalk for the next walk sign l— I still double back to make sure he's golden; Fox knows this is where we all go, We both know how slow and how old he is, and so I double back My heart can't take it and anyway. On this week's episode of the Modern Retail Podcast, the staff is going deep into modern marketing strategies. First up, executive editor Anna Hensel and senior reporter Gabriela Barkho talk about what was top of mind for executives at the Modern Retail Marketing Summit. Tariffs -- and how to respond to them -- were a hot topic of discussion. Marketers batted around ideas like adding a tariff surcharge to orders, pressing pause on some collaborations to save resources and taking a surgical approach to cutting SKUs. In some cases, they are still pushing forward on marketing spend while competitors pull back. Speakers from brands like Oura, Chobani and Bark also talked about their approach to growing their retail businesses, as they use insights from their DTC business to inform their pitch to retailers, and use their wholesale businesses to introduce themselves to new types of customers. Then, in this week's featured segment (19:42), Hanna Andersson's chief customer officer, Lisa Perlmutter, talks about how the premium children's apparel brand built its first-ever loyalty program.

Send us a textArtificial intelligence is no longer the future of veterinary medicine—it's very much the present. In this captivating discussion with guest editors Casey Cazer, Parminder Basran, and Renata Ivanek, we explore the groundbreaking AJVR supplemental issue "From Bark to Bytes: Artificial Intelligence Transforming Veterinary Medicine." The conversation reveals how AI applications already extend far beyond the clinical notes scribes that many practitioners might be familiar with. Veterinarians are now using AI-assisted stethoscopes to detect bovine respiratory disease, employing machine learning algorithms to predict Lyme disease risk patterns, and leveraging artificial intelligence to fill gaps in antimicrobial resistance surveillance data. Each application demonstrates how this technology can enhance clinical decision-making while accelerating vital research. Our guests emphasize that successful AI implementation requires multidisciplinary collaboration, quality data, and thoughtful integration. "Garbage in, garbage out" remains a fundamental principle—without standardized, high-quality data, even the most sophisticated AI tools will produce unreliable results. The ethical dimensions of AI in veterinary medicine also take center stage in our discussion, from ensuring data privacy and informed consent to recognizing inherent biases and maintaining the veterinarian's ultimate responsibility for patient care. For practitioners curious about incorporating AI tools into their workflow, our experts recommend starting with well-researched technologies, implementing them gradually, and evaluating how they affect the veterinarian-client relationship. As this field continues its rapid evolution, staying informed through resources like this supplemental issue becomes increasingly crucial for veterinarians who want to harness AI's potential while navigating its challenges. Join the conversation at the second Symposium for Artificial Intelligence in Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University (May 16-18, 2025) to explore how these technologies can help shape the future of animal healthcare.INTERESTED IN SUBMITTING YOUR MANUSCRIPT TO JAVMA ® OR AJVR ® ? "The butterfly effect: weeping and flying; llorando y volando: mariposas monarcas "What is the sound of butterflies? What is the sound of butterflies? What is the sound of millions and millions of monarch butterflies as they open wings and ascend into the air? What is the sound of zero monarch butterflies?  "Monarch butterflies have been part of my life for over 30 years in two places in North America that I have called home (both places of migration from my childhood home of Britain). I have experienced eastern monarcas in their tens of millions in the high forested mountains of the state of Michoacán, Mexico, where the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve is located. I have experienced a few western monarchs in the eucalyptus trees on the cliffs above the Pacific Ocean, in Goleta, California, where the Ellwood Monarch Butterfly Reserve is located. Both the State of Michoacán and the City of Goleta use the gorgeous orange and black form of the monarca butterfly as their logo.  "In Michoacán, Mexico, these multitudes of eastern monarcas follow a migratory pattern across many generations, encompassing the three countries of North America: Mexico, United States and Canada. In Goleta, United States, these tiny numbers of western monarcas follow a short migratory pattern from the coast to the Rockies. In December 2024, the official count was zero. As pollinators, monarch butterflies contribute to healthy ecosystems across North America.  "In the 1990s, as a researcher, creative artist and violinist, I had the privilege of learning from the wisdom and lifeways of Indigenous P'urhépecha peoples in Michoacán, whose presence spans many centuries. I learned from my experience of being a visitor to El Rosario, in the high forested mountains, where millions and millions of monarca butterflies blanket every trunk and branch. This is the World Heritage Site of the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve. Known only to local villagers and landowners until 1975, now a global tourist attraction and UNESCO World Heritage Site.  "Before sunrise, with closed wings, their motionlessness and quietness radiate a profound tranquility. In their fragility and robustness, they are breathtaking. As earth turns, moment by moment, a transformation unfolds as the sun's rays bath each tree, causing warming, waking, stirring, and movement. Bark and trees seemingly come alive, as millions and millions of wings open, rise and cascading upwards, forming ascending and fluttering clouds of orange and black.  "Why do you cry, little human baby?  ¿Porque estás llorando, pequeño bebe humano?  Are you crying for your soul? ¿Estás llorando por tu alma? Por tu futura? For your future?  What have we humans done to this planet? ?Que hemos hecho a esta planeta -  "Listen, Escucha, listen, escucha,  to infinite sounds of millions and millions of monarch butterflies in Mexico  a los sonidos infinitos de millones y millones de mariposas monarca en México  "Listen, Escucha, listen, escucha,  To the sound of zero monarch butterflies in Goleta, California al Sonido de zero mariposas monarca en Goleta, California  Silencio, silence, silencio, silence, silenco, silence –  "In Michoacán, Mexico, the Indigenous Purhépecha grandmothers tell how their ancestors walked from the cold lands to the centre of the country. When the children and old people could go no further, they covered their bodies with the orange resin of the trees and the yellow pollen of the flowers to keep themselves warm. The pollen and resin transformed them into monarch butterflies, and they flew together to the lands of the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve. "En Michoacán, Mexico, las abuelas Indigena P'urhépecha dicen como sus ancestros caminaban desde la tierra fria al centro del pais. Cuando los niños y la genta vieja no pudieran caminar mas, cubrieron sus cuerpos con resina anaranjada de los arboles y el polen Amarillo de los flores para mantenerse calientes. Y el polen y la resina los transformaron a mariposas monarcas y volaron juntos a la tierra de la reserva biosfera de la mariposa monarca.  "weeping and flying; llorando y volando/ monarch mariposas–butterflies monarcas "But what is the sound of monarch butterflies? The field recording by renowned Mexican sound recordist Erick Ruiz Arrellano intrigued me. What did Erick record in this most extraordinary of locations, El Rosario Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve in Michoacán? I was overwhelmed by the sound of a human baby crying. I decided to use the human baby crying as the core sound, in all the repetition, alarm, which seems to come at once from the depths of the ocean and crosses through all of human time.  "In this most extraordinary of ecosystems, biospheres and heritage places, where millions and millions of fragile beings, here a human baby cries.  Why are they crying?  Are they crying for their future?  Are they crying for the disappearance of earth's heritage, the heritage of monarcas who have inhabited this planet for so much longer than humans? Are they crying because we tourists and visitors, in our quest to hear and see earth's transitions and journeys, disrupt and impose our own desires before our ancestor-beings? Are they crying because we humans cause devasting loss of habit, through so-called development, through massive farming complexes, herbicides, insecticides, shopping malls… "And do they hear us ? Yes – they hear us through veins in their wings ¿Y las mariposas nos escuchen? Sí – nos escuchan através de las venas en sus alas." Kris writes " In early January I decided to head to RMNP west of Estes Park to hike up and snowboard down an old ski hill there. This is something I've done many times on my own and often there are others doing the same. Although I think it's a bit more rare to go at night, you'll still see folks up there hitting a line a night with head lamps and lights. This time I decided to go at night on my own. I did tell 3 friends where I was going and actually texted one friend a starry Pic from the trailhead. The trailhead lot was empty as we're the ranger stations on the way in. So, at this point I headed up the hill. It usually takes about an hour depending on snow conditions. I had a snowboard, a backpack with snacks and a Bluetooth speaker. I typically opt out of using snowshoes because Ive got to carry them down as well. I threw on the whole Sabbath paranoid album to get my head straight and motivated. The hill is a limited number of runs with low angles so there is really no avalanche danger. A week prior, I did the exact same thing. A night hike and boarded down. So, I was confident and enjoying the solace. Even over the sabbath, I could here the wind moving tall trees and flakes hitting the ground. The trail isn't challenging going up and the terrain opens and closes with the trees in the background. About 45 minutes in, I am at the point where the hill opens up and is peppered with trees in the ski slope. The sides are surrounded by darkness due to the trees around. My speaker suddenly says "low battery". I kept walking to the top where the hill funnels you into a narrow trail between more trees. ( i had my phone, so i could point this part out on Google maps) Right then, I decide to reach back and turn off the speaker so I don't have to hear the low battery alert. I continue up this narrow trail for about 80 yards, just short of thr length of a football field. Only hearing the flakes landing, wind, and my crunchy boot prints, out of nowhere came the loudest BARK, with a roaring echo, I've ever heard. At this point, I froze. My whole body went into shock. I went from nice n warm because of all the movement to cold as ice. I lost feeling in my lips. I didn't know what to do, or say or.... So I did what I've done on a couple occasions. I channeled my inner Phil Anselmo and ripped the biggest scream I could. I yelled HEY! With everything I had. I wanted to Guage where this noise came from so I yelled. After, I sat down shaking. About 15 heartbeats later, BARK! At that moment I knew it was in the trees down from me. Silence in-between these barks so I know it wasn't moving. I got into my bag and took out 3 lights I use for night biking. All of which are at least 1000 lumens. I pointed one up the trail, one down the trail, and one right in front of me into the trees. I listened and heard nothing. I'm thinking, did I imagine this? So I go HEY one more time. Sure enough, about 10- 15 heartbeats later, BARK. I almost started crying as I strapped my snowboard faster than I ever could have otherwise. I'm freaking out in silence as I think I'm about to board into this sound by heading down. As I'm thinking all of this, I've gotten ready and am about to stand up. This is where in the trees ahead of me, a crazy loud laughing started. Hat ha ha ha haha. It echoes as if there are multiple somethings laughing at me. Like a mad joker. I flipped at that point. Mentally freaked out. I was having trouble standing up because my hands were sinking into the snow. I quickly found a way and headed down faster than I would have in the day! I didn't sleep gor two nights, and still have trouble doing so. Thx for reading Wes. I was shaking and having a hard time writing this."   We will also be speaking to Augustus, he writes "My uncle just died and he told we to tell you about all of are interesting stories and the crazy we saw while hunting and horseback riding." Augustus is from Utah and shares strange encounters near his families property.
