Virginia Democrats had a big night in Tuesday's elections, sweeping all the statewide races and winning a supermajority in the House of Delegates. We broke down the historic election from all angles. We dove into the results with WAMU's Northern Virginia reporter, Margaret Barthel, and David Poole, founder of the Virginia Public Access Project. We were then joined by one of the big winners, Lieutenant Governor-elect Ghazala Hashmi, to discuss what it means for Virginians and her historic election victory as the first Muslim woman to win statewide office in the U.S.During the campaign, Hashmi dealt with comments about her background, including from her Republican opponent, John Reid, who suggested she was supported by "radical Islamists." Hashmi said voters made clear they disagreed with that rhetoric. "It was Virginians who made their choice known, and the ugliness of the bigotry that my opponent was targeting me with was soundly rejected on Tuesday night," she said.Hashmi said that, as Lieutenant Governor, she plans to focus on housing affordability, energy concerns, and healthcare. Finally, Virginia Senate Majority Leader Scott Surovell took the mic to discuss what the Democrats' "trifecta" means for governing, constitutional amendments, and the much-discussed redistricting plan. He cautioned that Democrats will need to navigate significant budget challenges, which could hamper the party's agenda."A lot of these new policies require money in order to implement," he said. "And given our budget situation, we're gonna have to figure out what we can afford and what we can prioritize."At the top of the agenda when the General Assembly reconvenes in January will be raising the minimum wage, banning assault weapons, and paid family leave.Send us questions and comments for guests: kojo@wamu.orgFollow us on Instagram: instagram.com/wamu885Follow us on Bluesky: bsky.app/wamu.org

In this powerful live episode of 1819 News: The Podcast, host Bryan Dawson sits down with Alabama Lt. Gov. Will Ainsworth at the Point Clear Republican Women's Group for a raw, unfiltered conversation about courage, faith, and the future of Alabama. Known for his principled leadership and willingness to take on entrenched powers, Ainsworth discusses how he has transformed the historically “defanged” role of lieutenant governor into one of the most active and impactful positions in the state. From championing school choice and cutting Alabama's grocery tax, to fighting for military families and calling out unaccountable agencies like ALDOT and the Alabama High School Athletic Association, Ainsworth shares how conservative policies can move from talking points to real results. He highlights the importance of building coalitions, creating relationships, and standing on biblical values even when the backlash is fierce. This episode also dives into some of the most pressing issues facing conservatives nationwide. Dawson and Ainsworth address the tragic attempted assassination of President Trump, the death of Charlie Kirk, and the growing hostility toward public figures who speak hard truths. Ainsworth outlines why his decision to step aside from a potential gubernatorial run to support Coach Tuberville was rooted in faith, family, and a long-term vision for Alabama. More than just politics, this conversation is about a movement. Ainsworth speaks to the next generation of conservatives and Christians rising up on campuses across the nation—leaders inspired by Kirk and others—who are refusing to be silent in the face of cultural decay. He calls on listeners to be bold, to step into leadership, and to defend their values with both courage and compassion. If you've ever wondered what real conservative leadership looks like in action—or how faith and principle can drive policy and shape a state's future—this is an episode you won't want to miss.

John Reid, Republican candidate for Lieutenant Governor of Virginia, joined The Guy Benson Show today to discuss the shocking scandal involving Democratic Attorney General candidate Jay Jones, who sent text messages saying he wished current Virginia House Speaker Todd Gilbert had “two bullets” in his head, along with wishing Gilbert's wife could watch her own children die in her arms. Reid expressed outrage over the silence from Virginia Democrats, including gubernatorial candidate Abagail Spanberger, who have refused to condemn Jones or call for him to drop out of the race. He also noted that many Democrats who voted early are now expressing deep regret over their decision. Reid detailed the disturbing pattern of escalating political violence on the left, from this scandal to the recent assassination of Charlie Kirk, and what it says about the state of our political discourse. In this week’s episode, Jennifer welcomes Anne Brensley, a select board member from Wayland, Massachusetts, an accomplished attorney, finance professional, and small business owner. Anne is a first-generation American, adopted from Honduras, whose life journey includes profound experiences as a caregiver, community leader, and mother. With more than 15 years of entrepreneurial experience, senior leadership in banking, and a law degree, Anne brings determination and resilience to her campaign as she seeks the office of Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts. Jennifer and Anne discuss the unique landscape of Massachusetts state politics, where candidates for Governor and Lieutenant Governor run independently, the underestimated power of the Lieutenant Governor’s office, and what it takes to run – and win – as a Republican woman in a predominantly blue state. Anne shares her gritty approach to leadership, emphasizing the urgent need for more practical, solution-oriented governance and fearless advocacy for local communities. The conversation tackles controversial criticisms of the MBTA Communities Act, the state’s high cost of living, outmigration of young professionals, and the lack of focus on “ownership” opportunities for the next generation. Anne positions herself as a voice for those impacted by stagnant, one-party rule and outlines a vision for connecting Statehouse policy to the everyday needs of families and municipalities. Listeners will hear candid commentary on party politics, local government, and Anne’s determination to use her diverse background as an asset for Massachusetts. “I think we have a major issue with ownership for young people. I mean that across the board, young people nowadays… they’re being deprived of ownership.” ~Anne Brensley This week on Political Contessa: Anne’s inspiration for running for Lieutenant Governor and leading from the ground up in Massachusetts The critical impact of local politics and the need for a direct line from municipalities to the state’s executive office The challenges of being a Republican woman entering statewide office in a predominantly Democratic state The overlooked potential for the Lieutenant Governor to serve as a change agent, not just a ceremonial figure The urgent need to address Massachusetts’s housing affordability and retention of young professionals Why Anne believes the MBTA Communities Act is missing the mark on homeownership and local empowerment The importance of fearless, resilient leadership and grassroots campaigning over data-driven, detached strategies Anne’s commitment to pragmatic, bipartisan problem-solving in government and her call for more women to run for office Connect with Anne Brensley: Website: www.anne2026.com Resources Mentioned: Anne Brinsley’s campaign for Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts The MBTA Communities Act Tip O’Neill’s “All politics are local” Kelly Ayotte’s messaging on New Hampshire and Massachusetts Support Anne or get involved: Volunteer or contribute at www.anne2026.com Awaken Your Inner Political Contessa Thanks for tuning into this week’s episode of Political Contessa. Please note that Human Restoration Project is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and that this interview is not an endorsement of Morales as a candidate for office. Before Howie Morales became Lieutenant Governor of New Mexico, before he was ever a state senator, he was a teacher and a state-championship winning baseball coach in rural New Mexico. He also holds a Master's in bilingual education and a doctorate in curriculum and instruction. So it'd be difficult, it seems, to understand what he's accomplished in those elected positions except through the lens of his experience in the classroom. And he joins me to talk about that experience, how it informs his work and achievements in office, and the challenges New Mexico public school students, families, and teachers still face.
