On this episode, Congressman Andrew Clyde (R-GA) addresses the pressing need for accountability in political rhetoric, highlighting the recent assassination attempts on President Trump's life and the inflammatory language used by top Democrats, including President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. The Georgia Republican gave a speech on the floor of the United States House of Representatives on this issue, calling for responsibility and pledging to hold bad actors accountable. Nevertheless, Congressman Clyde advocates for equal protection of President Trump, proposing a shift in Secret Service priorities rather than increased funding to ensure his safety. Furthermore, the duo shifted conversation to focus on Georgia, where he discussed the impact of illegal immigration of his state, sharing specific cases of crimes committed by illegal immigrants. He critiques media bias in fact-checking and expresses his strong support of the SAVE Act, which failed by a vote of 202-220 just the other day. The SAVE Act prevents non-citizens from voting, applying an additional safeguard system to our elections. You can follow the great work of this House Appropriator on X: @Rep_Clyde. Welcome to What Matters Now, a weekly podcast exploring one key issue currently shaping Israel and the Jewish World, hosted by deputy editor Amanda Borschel-Dan. Last week, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene -- a Georgia Republican who has been criticized in the past for her dalliances with antisemitic tropes and influencers -- explained her vote against a bill defining antisemitism by saying that the bill rejects the “gospel” that “the Jews” handed Jesus over to his crucifiers. When the Georgia Republican stated these "facts," she echoed thousands of years of blood libel used to excuse the antisemitic massacre of Jews. In this week's What Matters Now, The Times of Israel's senior analyst Haviv Rettig Gur explains some of the history behind this statement and how antisemitism differs from "regular" racism. We see how antisemitism plays out in the ongoing anti-Israel protests on North American university campuses and discuss how a majority of the over 2,000 arrested in recent weeks have not actually been college students. On Monday, we in Israel marked Yom Hashoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, and for next week are looking ahead to Memorial Day and Independence Day. Rettig Gur looks at how these days affect Israelis -- and why they are observed day-after-day. So in a week in which US President Joe Biden denounces rising antisemitism, we ask Haviv Rettig Gur, what matters now? What Matters Now podcasts are available for download on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube or wherever you get your podcasts. This episode was produced by the Pod-Waves. Georgia Republican legislators are falling all over themselves racing to enact legislation that's likely illegal (but we won't call them "illegals") ... aiming to criminalize local law enforcement's handling of undocumented arrestees while providing no additional resources obviously needed. Also, the University of Georgia plans to spend $7.3 million for security upgrades that don't seem to address what happened to Laken Riley last week. A retired professor and outspoken Michigan voter has Donald Trump pegged - "he's pretty much an a**hole," she said - highlighting his NATO-destroying rhetoric among other shortcomings. Her "person on the street" account and Michigan's "uncommitted" Democratic primary voters get a lot of headlines, but some perspective is called for, so I compare Obama's 2012 results here with President Biden's. Last week, of all sources, The Daily Show and host Desi Lydic called into question this false notion that Nikki Haley is a "moderate." Good. Terrance Bradley's tap-dance around his text messaging Mike Roman's attorney prior to testifying came into focus Tuesday. Also, how did Ashleigh Merchant forget to bring said text messages in to produce as evidence?
The Georgia House overwhelmingly passed Governor Brian Kemp's proposed $37.5 billion budget. Plus, Georgia Republican senators moved through a bill to prohibit using QR codes to tabulate election ballots. Also, criminal justice advocates say a bill headed to Kemp's desk is a step back from years of reform. And Georgia lawmakers passed a bill backed by Kemp that would make it harder to organize labor unions across the state. See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Despite the state of Georgia being unnecessarily deadly for anyone in jails or prisons, Georgia Republican legislators still felt the need to make it harder for the poor and working class to bail themselves out of jail for a larger number of alleged crimes - some of them misdemeanors. Senate bill 63 (SB63) awaits Governor Brian Kemp's signature, but not before advocates for the poor bemoan the thoughtlessness and senselessness of the legislation. Such a law - I believe - will have the unintended consequence of having cops have to decide the necessity of taking people in with jails & prisons already crowded throughout the state. The thing is, this new bill is a callous, cruel attack on not just the poor, but a suppression of free speech, as it targets protests and bail funds and non-profits (even churches) who raise funds to bail out more than three individuals in a year. Fani Willis has had a bad string of weeks, so it's hard not to notice when a bipartisan batch of ethics experts filed a "friend of the court" brief Monday opining that nothing she (nor Nathan Wade, for that matter) has done warrants her being disqualified or acting improperly. Much of what they wrote in the brief you've heard from Willis' defenders (and me, though I still believe her actions were foolish) but it still had to feel good for the embattled Fulton County prosecutor after a barrage of bad press. Back to legislative antics under the gold dome, Georgia Republicans can't help but to pander to gun fetishists with a sales tax holiday for gun & ammo purchases a week in October under the guise of being "pro-hunting." The problem is the tax holiday isn't limited to just hunting rifles & shotguns; because of course. Senator Jason Esteves was among those on the left who point that out. Hear his impassioned floor speech. Lastly, forgive me; I had to savor yesterday's ridiculousness in the House as Marjorie Taylor Greene struggled with second grade math and got roasted by Rep. Jamie Raskin (againnnn) and Rep. Jared Moskowitz (againnnn). First, she and her MAGA crew failed to impeach DHS Secretary Mayorkas, then they couldn't pass the Israel funding measure they once before said had to be tied to Ukraine and border funding - which they won't even put up for a vote.

On this Dixie Dems episode of the Lean to the Left podcast, you'll hear Georgia Republican wacko Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene laud President Biden for all of the great work he's done since his election. Yes, that's true. In fact, so true that the Biden campaign has turned those comments by Greene into a killer TV ad.Also on this episode, you'll hear a Republican Congressman inside a couple's bedroom while they are preparing to have sex telling them they're not allowed to use contraception. Yep, that's right. It's an ad Democrats are running in Ohio, and while funny, it's a warning of how the GOP is trying to interfere with our personal lives on many fronts. All of that, plus discussions about the No Label party and efforts by some moderates to establish a bipartisan ticket to challenge Biden and the eventual Republican nominee, as well as key political issues percolating in southern states and nationwide.Remember, the Dixie Dems is the monthly podcast from Lean to the Left, which takes an irreverent look at politics in our region and nationwide. Joining me on the episode, as always, are Arthur Hill, from North Carolina, and Robert Thompson, from Georgia.Arthur is first vice chair of the Brunswick County, North Carolina, Democratic party. Robert Thompson is based in Atlanta and founded Peach News Now and its opinion podcast, Got Damn Liberals.Me, I'm based in South Carolina, the state where two Republican candidates are taking on Donald Trump in the Republican presidential sweepstakes. They, of course, are former SC governor Nikki Haley, former UN ambassador for Trump, and Sen. Tim Scott, the only African American GOP US Senator. On July 1, Trump took over Main Street of the tiny town of Pickens located in the hills of our state, where he drew a big crowd of supporters…some estimates as high as 50k, although that was in dispute by some attendees. However, it was hot and thousands stood for hours to hear this man. Some even got sick from the heat. Incredible. At any rate, it was on the home-state turf of Haley and Scott, two long-shot candidates who are trying to wrest the GOP nomination from him.“2024 is our final battle,” declared Trump. “Under our leadership, the forgotten men and women will be forgotten no longer.” Same old message, reprised from his previous campaigns. Same old song. And the people lap it up.In North Carolina, Arthur Hill discusses a groundbreaking decision by the U.S. Supreme Court on gerrymandering, which he said Democrats were applauding as crucial to fair elections, both in the Tar Heel State and nationwide. In Georgia, Thompson discusses upcoming potential indictment of Donald Trump in the case involving the former president's ill-fated effort to convince state officials to simply "find" him the 11,000 votes he would have needed to carry the state in the 2020 election. There is much, much more in this episode as the Dixie Dems cut through typical and ongoing GOP BS.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-lean-to-the-left-podcast--4719048/support.

Congressman Barry Loudermilk joins us to discuss his battle against the Marxist Dems' J6 Committee, their attacks on him and the likelihood there could be as many as 1,200 more Americans arrested in the DOJ's reign of terror. The J6 Committee and the DOJ didn't hesitate to attack Congressman Loudermilk. He was questioned by the Marxist Dems about what they termed a reconnaissance tour on Jan. 5th of 2021. The Georgia Republican was hosting a tour of friends and others and none of them he says were present on Jan. 6th. Congressman Benny Thompson said Loudermilk was never formally accused and Loudermilk refused to respond to their questions. And in a twist of fate, all of the records of the Jan. 6th Committee are now under the control of House Republicans and Loudermilk is the head of the Administration Committee's Oversight Investigation of J6. Loudermilk is also in control of 44K hours of video from that day. And he says everything including the records Dems tried to keep secret will be available to the public. When not fighting Marxists Dems in D.C.. he's standing up for constituents in Georgia. He recently joined the owners of the World's largest gun store in Smyrna, Georgia when 16 ATF agents from all over the country showed up to intimidate the owners. Loudermilk says we must make government accountable to our citizens. GUEST: REP. Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis has legal, practical and political considerations to consider as she investigates former President Donald Trump and his allies for alleged meddling with the 2020 election. To explore the latter consideration, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution's Breakdown podcast turned to Greg Bluestein, the newspaper's politics reporter who broke many of the stories that have become central parts of the special purpose grand jury investigation. In a far-reaching interview, Bluestein weighs in on the probe in light of Trump's recent announcement to run again for president, the possible impact of the investigation on the Georgia Republican party and the potential fate of the 16 Republicans who cast fake Electoral College votes for Trump when the official slate of 16 Democrats voted for President Joe Biden. Episode 20 - 'It's All Politics' - of Breakdown's ninth season - 'The Trump Grand Jury - also provides updates on attempts by former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows to avoid testifying before the special grand jury. Princeton political history Professor and CNN Commentator Julian Zelizer returns to the Dworkin Report to discuss his book, Burning Down the House: Newt Gingrich, the Fall of a Speaker, and the Rise of the New Republican Party. Professor Zelizer tells us how Newt Gingrich's rise to power in the Republican party was the turning point that led to the birth of the Tea Party movement, the catastrophic Presidency of Donald Trump, and the modern toxic GOP. Zelizer gave us a breakdown of how it all ended for Newt Gingrich and what it can teach us about modern Republicans as we head into the 2022 midterms. “If you go back to the eighties, the Reagan years, and you look at Gingrich and what he was doing on Capitol Hill, you see this new style of partisanship, from vicious takedowns of opponents to the use of any kind of toxic language that one wants to the constant prioritization of partisanship over governing,” says the Princeton professor. “This is now deeply embedded in the DNA of the GOP. And you need to understand that to make sense of why [Trump's] support among Republicans remains pretty strong.” We also discuss Newt's “Contract with America,” which never materialized into actually passed laws but helped Republicans in the 1994 elections. “It was a gimmick. A series of promises that focused on an eclectic mix of anti-politics, conservative law and order, and fiscal conservative promises,” says Zelizer. “And then it became a problem because after Republicans do take over, they're unable to pass almost any of it. So it becomes just a reminder of what they didn't do.” Recently, Gingrich helped GOP House minority leader Kevin McCarthy construct a similar plan that CNN called “going small.” This interview explores how Newt Gingrich's GOP, over the course of a decade, rid the party of the inconvenient ideas that governance matters and that politicians have a responsibility to make sure our institutions work. Through political theater and criminalizing Democrats, Gingrich showed modern Republicans how to weaponize governance and partisan attacks. In many ways, it was the Georgia Republican's hypocritical actions that laid the pathway for Donald Trump to take over the Republican party today. Julian E. Zelizer is a Professor of History and Public Affairs at Princeton University. Zelizer, a CNN Political Analyst and NPR contributor, is the author and editor of 24 books on U.S. political history.
