Jesus Knows the people are following him because of his miraculous provision rather than because of who he is as a provider. His miracles have been intended to reveal that true satisfaction can only be found in him, but now Jesus will describe to those who seek him HOW to receive this satisfaction. It's a shocking teaching that causes many of Jesus' followers to turn away.
In today's passage, we find Jesus returning to the place he performed his first miracle and facing the reality that the people were looking for to place their faith in a king that would continue to exert such miraculous power. Jesus speaks into this false understanding of faith, using another miracle to challenge people to believe in who he is, rather than in what he can do.
Teaching from the 2024 Good Friday service.
In this account, the rabbi Nicodemus approaches a "new teacher", seeking a deeper understanding of the signs of God. To his surprise, he is presented with a completely new way of knowing God, found through a relationship with God's son, Jesus. To accept this invitation to a relationship with Jesus, Nicodemus must wrestle through his view of God's love and grace for himself and the world.
God desires relationship with every person. Yet sin has entered our relationships - first with God, then with others - leaving them unraveled and broken. God's response to these unraveling relationships was to offer the life of His Son, so that our relationship with God could be restored. How will we choose to respond to this amazing offer? How should it impact the way we walk in relationship with others?
This week's sermon comes from Colossians 3:12-4:1. Paul continues his writing to the Colossians with a call to be clothed in the characteristics of Jesus - a type of wardrobe that is utterly different from the one we have been instructed to ‘put off' in the preceding verses. The clothing of Christ requires a different posture altogether from our natural, human tendencies. Clothing yourself in the nature of Jesus requires you to become small. Paul shows us how this move to become small actually magnifies Christ as it lifts others up.
Sermon from Sunday, October 8th. More at followingtogether.com/messages. Throughout the entire Scriptures, we are reminded of the value of expressing gratitude to God - of being thankful. Psalm 136 lays out a pattern of thanking God first for who He is, then for what He does, next for His rescue, and finally for His continued provision. It's a pattern worth repeating in our own lives. As we look into the New Testament, we see the call to be thankful is furthered by those who follow Jesus. Colossians 3, in particular, reminds us that the same posture of thankfulness expresses by God's people in the Old Testament can also draw us into a deeper experience of Christ's peace today.

In order for us to understand "Religious Liberty," we must know what it means. The First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution states that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” As enshrined in the First Amendment, religious freedom includes two complementary protections: the right to religious belief and expression and a guarantee that the government neither prefers religion over non-religion nor favors particular faiths over others. These dual protections work hand in hand, allowing religious liberty to thrive and safeguarding both religion and government from the undue influences of the other. Tonite, we will go live with CHRIS ZELLER who is a Master of Divinity, and Pastoral Ministry.
