Case in point: nearly a third of gifts during Penn's $5.4 billion campaign came from donors giving less than $50,000. The message? Every gift counts, and every donor deserves attention. Zeller shares how he and his team shifted from a transactional mindset to a holistic approach, ensuring donors were involved long before and after the ask. At Penn, they implemented a strategy called “non-financial objectives,” inviting people to volunteer, serve on committees, and participate in university life without writing a check. It wasn't just nice, it was strategic. By formalizing volunteer roles with job descriptions and term limits, they attracted over 32,000 volunteers across two campaigns. Volunteers became passionate advocates, and many transitioned into donors, with research showing that 80% of engaged volunteers go on to give financially. Bonus stat: over half of high-net-worth individuals volunteer, making this a double win for fundraisers. Of course, the million-dollar (sometimes literally) question is: When do you make the ask? Zeller offers his “8-question method” as a roadmap. The first four help determine donor capacity, interest, relationship strength, and philanthropic inclination. The next four zoom in on specifics: gift area, amount, timing, and potential assets involved (like IPOs or business sales). If you can confidently answer all eight, go ahead and pop the question, because if you've done your homework, it shouldn't come as a surprise. And if the timing's off, donors will let you know. Zeller closes by underscoring that stewardship isn't just a step in the giving cycle, it's a mindset. From matching students with donors to hosting impactful scholarship receptions and “Engaging Minds” events featuring top researchers, Penn created moments that made donors feel connected, appreciated, and inspired to give more. Zware gesprekken in de raad en dus ook in de Week van De Orkaan. Maar gelukkig was er ook wat te vieren. Naar aanleiding van een artikel van Follow The Money werd de werkwijze van het Zaanse interventieteam besproken. Marijn Kerkhoven was erbij en vertelt wat insprekers en raadsleden van de discussie over het team vonden. DENK-voorman Erdogan Sahin was zeer te spreken over inspreekster Sabine Zeller. Zij nam het op voor Villa Westerweide. De vrijwilligers doen daar uitstekend werk, en dat moet zo blijven. DENK is dankzij ‘parel van de stad' Zeller om. Bij basisschool De Oceaan in Assendelft was het feest. Het meidenteam van groep 7 en 8 is schoolvoetbalkampioen van Nederland geworden. Tussen het feestgedruis door hadden twee kampioenen even tijd om met De Orkaan te praten. Natuurlijk heeft Michel weer allerlei avonturen beleefd als 112-verslaggever. Wenn man lange mit jemandem zusammengelebt hat und dieser Mensch stirbt, wie begleitet er einen dann weiter im Leben? Wie denkt man an ihn, was erinnert man? Die Lyrikerin Eva Christina Zeller hatte das Gefühl, dass ihr ehemaliger und mittlerweile verstorbener Partner ihr auf eine sehr abstrakte Weise Gedichte „diktiert“ hat. Und sie hat sie aufgeschrieben. Auch in Gedichten über ihre Mutter hat die Lyrikerin ihre sehr persönliche Art gefunden, mit ihr zu kommunizieren und sich an sie zu erinnern – jenseits von Zeit und Raum.

Actor, documentarian, and cult survivor Hoyt Richards discusses the danger of former members engaging before they have healed. Hoyt is concerned about the infighting in the wide world of survivors. Jon adds reflections from his four decades of work with former members. Many people leave an authoritarian group and deny the harm it did to them and the harm they did to others because of their cult beliefs. They may then descend into rage against the group rather than feeling compassion for its victims. Often, members don't understand the manipulative methods they have acquired during membership and continue to act aggressively and self-righteously. Hoyt and Jon propose ways of overcoming the toxic residue of cult involvement, where the world-saving deceptions of the group turn to saving the world from the group rather than helping members to escape and recover. Rodney Baldus, a retired truck driver from Minnesota, believes he is the recipient of a large inheritance belonging to his late wife.
