On this week's episode of Change Agents, Andy sits down with award-winning journalist Mariana van Zeller, host of National Geographic's Trafficked, to explore cartels, black markets, and human trafficking in the U.S. and abroad. Mariana discusses how cartels operate in small American towns, use domestic flights for smuggling, and recruit American citizens as distributors. She also examines the trade of Vietnamese brides into China and the broader social and economic factors that enable these crimes. The conversation highlights the scale of drug trafficking and human exploitation and emphasizes the need for awareness and solutions that address the root causes. I have become a big fan of Ruckus, a dynamic Early Music ensemble, and I so enjoyed this uplifting conversation with Clay Zeller-Townson, their Artistic Director and bassoonist. ou'll be hearing clips from The Edinburgh Rollick with music from the Niel Gow collection, featuring the violinist Keir GoGwilt, and because this music is very much at the crossroads of Scottish traditional music and Baroque music, it delights audiences who are more into folk as well as baroque. You'll be inspired to hear Clay's ideas around crafting something truly personal and unique and connecting with audiences, as well the importance of access to music education at all levels. We also got into Ruckus' Fly the Coop project with flutist Emi Ferguson with a wonderfully fresh take on the music of J.S. Bach, and a lot of what Clay shared was how the musicians connect deeply with their audiences with contemporary relevance in many different ways. You'll find the track names of the music included in the time stamps. A quiet evening stroll takes a horrifying turn. A beloved teacher and librarian becomes the target of a hate-driven ambush. On June 21, 1985, Toronto school librarian and teacher Kenneth Zeller, a well-liked educator at three schools, was walking to his car after a night with friends when five teenage boys ambushed him in High Park, brutally beating him to death in a homophobic hate crime. This episode unpacks the senseless violence of that midsummer night, the chilling group dynamics, and the cultural climate that labeled queer spaces as danger zones. As we explore the aftermath, from legal responses to the community's rallying to remember him as more than a victim. We delve into queer history, systemic intolerance, and the scars these injustices leave behind.Hosted by Jordi and Brad, Beers With Queers brings chilling crimes, queer stories, and twisted justice to light, all with a cold one in hand.Press play, raise a glass, and join us as we honor Kenneth Zeller's memory and confront the shadows of LGBTQ+ history.

What happens when your deep longing to love and be loved gets tangled up with your need to be needed? In this week's episode of Typology, Anthony and I sit down with the wonderful Emily Zeller—a licensed marriage and family therapist, certified Enneagram practitioner, and a one-to-one Enneagram Two. Emily brings such honesty and heart as we talk about desire, boundaries, and the tender places in all of us that crave connection. As we explore the unique energy of the Enneagram Two and unpack the three subtypes—self-preservation, social, and one-to-one—we ask questions we can all sit with: When have you confused being loved with being needed in your own relationships? What would it look like to offer love without trying to earn it in return? If you've ever wrestled with seeking validation, struggled to set boundaries, or simply wanted to understand yourself or a loved one better, you're going to feel right at home in this conversation. This episode isn't just for Twos—it's for anyone longing to grow in self-awareness and bring more compassion and balance to their relationships.

In this episode of The First Day from The Fund Raising School, host Bill Stanczykiewicz, Ed.D., sits down with fundraising powerhouse John Zeller, former Senior Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations at the University of Pennsylvania, to unpack the behind-the-scenes magic of major gift fundraising. While the headlines may tout seven- and eight-figure gifts, Zeller emphasizes that consistent cultivation, stewardship, and relationship-building are the real power players behind any billion-dollar campaign. Case in point: nearly a third of gifts during Penn's $5.4 billion campaign came from donors giving less than $50,000. The message? Every gift counts, and every donor deserves attention. Zeller shares how he and his team shifted from a transactional mindset to a holistic approach, ensuring donors were involved long before and after the ask. At Penn, they implemented a strategy called “non-financial objectives,” inviting people to volunteer, serve on committees, and participate in university life without writing a check. It wasn't just nice, it was strategic. By formalizing volunteer roles with job descriptions and term limits, they attracted over 32,000 volunteers across two campaigns. Volunteers became passionate advocates, and many transitioned into donors, with research showing that 80% of engaged volunteers go on to give financially. Bonus stat: over half of high-net-worth individuals volunteer, making this a double win for fundraisers. Of course, the million-dollar (sometimes literally) question is: When do you make the ask? Zeller offers his “8-question method” as a roadmap. The first four help determine donor capacity, interest, relationship strength, and philanthropic inclination. The next four zoom in on specifics: gift area, amount, timing, and potential assets involved (like IPOs or business sales). If you can confidently answer all eight, go ahead and pop the question, because if you've done your homework, it shouldn't come as a surprise. And if the timing's off, donors will let you know. Zeller closes by underscoring that stewardship isn't just a step in the giving cycle, it's a mindset. From matching students with donors to hosting impactful scholarship receptions and “Engaging Minds” events featuring top researchers, Penn created moments that made donors feel connected, appreciated, and inspired to give more. Even in today's fast-paced, AI-infused fundraising world, Zeller insists the essentials remain the same: data-informed strategies and genuine human relationships. In fundraising, as in life, it's all about showing up, saying thank you (often), and making people feel like part of the mission.

They delve into the importance of inner work and self-awareness in overcoming the negative impacts of social media, including the influence of trolls and negative feedback. The discussion emphasizes the need for authenticity in content creation and the significance of building confidence through understanding one's unique gifts and strengths. Ultimately, the conversation highlights the journey towards self-acceptance and the importance of curating a positive online experience. takeaways Social media amplifies the tendency to compare ourselves to others. It's essential to recognize that social media is often a curated highlight reel. Many high achievers struggle with comparison, especially in competitive fields. Inner work is crucial for understanding one's strengths and gifts. People who compare less often have a strong sense of self-awareness. Trolls and negative feedback often stem from the insecurities of others. Engaging with social media can be healthier when it involves interaction rather than passive consumption. Finding authenticity in content creation can lead to greater satisfaction and fulfillment. Positive affirmations should be believable and resonate with one's true self.
See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
She emphasizes the importance of continuing education to reignite passion. Mental health discussions in dentistry have become more prevalent post-COVID. Inner work is essential for true happiness and career fulfillment. Coaching others became a natural extension of her journey. Therapy alone may not be sufficient for career-related dissatisfaction. The goal of the course is to help people experience career fulfillment. Many professionals, especially dentists, struggle with burnout. Burnout often stems from doing things one doesn't want to do. Taking a vacation doesn't necessarily fix burnout. Happiness is an inside job and can be cultivated. Most people don't know the specific causes of their burnout.
