We spoke to Ashok Kumar around the themes in his book “Monopsony Capitalism”   Ashok Kumar is a Senior Lecturer of Political Economy Birkbeck University.  His most recent book Monopsony Capitalism: Power and Production in the Twilight of the Sweatshop Age (Cambridge University Press) was the winner of the American Sociological Association's 2021 Paul Sweezy Outstanding Book Prize and the 2022 Immanuel Wallerstein Memorial Book Award. The book demonstrates that the production process under global capitalism is governed by a universal logic that shapes the structural bargaining power of workers. In this episode we discuss why Marxism in our current moment has a new lease on life?   Stephan Hammel's work is focused on developing a historical materialist framework for the study of music. His research encompasses the history of Marxist approaches to the subject—both “Western” and “Eastern” variants—as well as the role of music in the communist movement. In addition, he harbors an interest in musical modernism in Latin America, especially as it relates to Left politics. Both agitator and educator, he frequently gives talks on political education. He has delivered papers at Left Forum, Historical Materialism, the American Society for Aesthetics, and the American Musicological Society.   I.G. @TheGambian @CtayJ   Twitter: @MomodouTaal @Ctayj

Christian Joseph dropped by the Badass Records Podcast studio for episode #22, and we discussed his affinity for skin ink, motorcycles, music, and the life of a restaurateur. The man with more middle names than you have professed his love specifically for Morrison Hotel (1970) by The Doors, Guns 'N' Roses's Appetite for Destruction (1987), and White Pony (2003) by Deftones, but that wasn't all we discussed. We talked about live music, professional endeavors, and the challenges that being a family member can sometimes present.Christian is a son, a brother, a father, and the owner of Plate Restaurant Group. He and I go back about eight or nine years, and have seldom passed up an opportunity to crack wise with one another. I couldn't be more grateful than to be gifted the time of such a busy individual who came by my place to bullshit for a couple of hours. It was truly a blast.copyright disclaimer: I do not own the rights to the intro/outro audio clips. They are from "The Fat Boy Goes to the Cinema," and "Get Some Money to Her" off of Albumen (1996) by The Egg, c/o Indochina.

Don and I met about 8 years ago through a friend (shout out Jason Queue/Tran) when we collaborated on a music video project for Christian Joseph. In this episode we talk Krav Maga, podcasting, learning through experiences and passion projects.   One of the themes that really stuck out from me was when Don was talking about iterative learning. We also butcher a plenty of concepts / stories in this podcast, however when Don commented to me afterwards that a childhood memory he shared on the podcast was actually a moment of self realisation for him I felt so grateful to have been able to share that moment with him.   We had a lot of fun and I have no doubts Don and I will work on other projects in future. Check out thecheatcoders podcast and a special random mention needs to go to Joe Newman the author of the book 'Raising lions' which made me look at my own childhood differently.

Alison Kenyon as an artist who is best known for (SPOILER ALERT!) being a finalist on Season 3 of the reality TV show, Skin Wars. Skin Wars is a show hosted by the lovely Rebecca Romijn which involves some of the worlds best body artists who are in competition with each other and judged by non other than the Queen of all queens, RuPaul. The winner gets an impressive list of prices, most notably $100k! You can find all 3 seasons of Skin Wars on Netflix. I had a very good conversation with Alison from things like life while in production on a reality show as well as the VERY interesting path she had that got her to where she is at now. It wasn't all paintings and sculptures, she defiantly had some rough times, but it all led up to her life as a TV famous artist and also what she says is her biggest role in life, being an amazing mother! Great conversation that sounds a bit rough. I apologize once again, I had a fan running while we were recording and well.. nothing I can do. I had the fan off during the intro so you get 2 min of proper sound lol As usual, the intro song is from my man Matt Malley and our sponsor is Foresthill Racing Co. Check out both! Also, Do me a solid and subscribe! Tell a friend damnit! More to come...
