We spoke to Ashok Kumar around the themes in his book “Monopsony Capitalism”   Ashok Kumar is a Senior Lecturer of Political Economy Birkbeck University.  His most recent book Monopsony Capitalism: Power and Production in the Twilight of the Sweatshop Age (Cambridge University Press) was the winner of the American Sociological Association's 2021 Paul Sweezy Outstanding Book Prize and the 2022 Immanuel Wallerstein Memorial Book Award. The book demonstrates that the production process under global capitalism is governed by a universal logic that shapes the structural bargaining power of workers. His research encompasses the history of Marxist approaches to the subject—both “Western” and “Eastern” variants—as well as the role of music in the communist movement. In addition, he harbors an interest in musical modernism in Latin America, especially as it relates to Left politics. Both agitator and educator, he frequently gives talks on political education. Don and I met about 8 years ago through a friend (shout out Jason Queue/Tran) when we collaborated on a music video project for Christian Joseph. In this episode we talk Krav Maga, podcasting, learning through experiences and passion projects.   One of the themes that really stuck out from me was when Don was talking about iterative learning. We also butcher a plenty of concepts / stories in this podcast, however when Don commented to me afterwards that a childhood memory he shared on the podcast was actually a moment of self realisation for him I felt so grateful to have been able to share that moment with him.   We had a lot of fun and I have no doubts Don and I will work on other projects in future. Alison Kenyon as an artist who is best known for (SPOILER ALERT!) being a finalist on Season 3 of the reality TV show, Skin Wars. Skin Wars is a show hosted by the lovely Rebecca Romijn which involves some of the worlds best body artists who are in competition with each other and judged by non other than the Queen of all queens, RuPaul. I had a very good conversation with Alison from things like life while in production on a reality show as well as the VERY interesting path she had that got her to where she is at now. It wasn't all paintings and sculptures, she defiantly had some rough times, but it all led up to her life as a TV famous artist and also what she says is her biggest role in life, being an amazing mother! Emily Fay Calhoun is a writer, editor, researcher and consultant, interested in the social sciences, public policy, cultural anthropology, health and the environment. She has explored these and many other subjects through documentary film-making, academia, journalism, and more recently narrative storytelling. In 2016, she produced and directed her first narrative short film, The Last Glimmer. She is now currently based in California and working as an archivist on documentaries as well as with the California Preservation Project. I had a great time hearing the story of Emily's journey. Chance Hospitalier is a communications student and MMA Fanatic who has a 1st degree blackbelt in Taekwondo. He represents the new school MMA fan of the Conor McGregor era. We talk about her life of marijuana cultivation in the infamous Emerald Triangle of Northern California, Annoying pets & filthy one night stands! This episode was recorded on 2.15.17 with a $7 lav mic. This was before I had my studio mics & sound editing software set up, so there is a lot of background noise.
