Ep 325: Why Filler Activities Backfire (In a Secondary Classroom)

On Your Prep Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 17, 2026 8:12

Ever tried a so-called fun end-of-class activity and ended up feeling more exhausted than you started? In this episode of The Secondary Teacher Podcast, host Khristen Massic takes aim at why filler activities backfire in a secondary classroom, and she does not hold back. If you've ever walked out of your classroom after ten minutes of “fun” with more side chatter, off-task students, and your energy zapped, you're not alone. Our primary keyword phrase today is “why filler activities backfire in a secondary classroom”—and Khristen's here to name what so many don't say out loud. The problem isn't that you're missing some critical engagement gene; it's that typical filler games like Trash Ball or toss-the-ball-for-points are only engaging for the one kid holding the spotlight. Everyone else? Zoned out, waiting, or finding their own fun. In a classroom of teens, when most are just watching, dead air creeps in—and that's when behavior issues show up uninvited. Here's the trap: teachers want to send students out on a high note, keep things light with games or review challenges. But activities where just a couple of students are active while everyone else is on the sidelines create what Khristen calls “audience time.” That audience time is drift time. The longer students sit as spectators, the more likely you'll have random noise, check-outs, or even outright chaos. It's not about being a bad teacher—teens are human, and humans fill dead space, usually not how we want. What's the better way? Khristen makes it clear: if it's not all play, don't use it for your last ten minutes. All play routines mean everyone participates, all at the same time, with structure and clear boundaries. That's how you eliminate problematic idle pockets and maintain a smooth classroom routine. This isn't about making activities flashier; it's about making them more distributed and structured, so nobody's left waiting for “their turn” while the energy drops and classroom management ramps up.Take Trash Ball, for example—a go-to review game for some. Host Khristen Massic shares how it leaves most of the secondary classroom disconnected while one student aims for a prize, and the rest just hope they get picked next. You end up spending more time redirecting behavior than actually teaching or reviewing. And let's be real—no amount of positive intentions can outmaneuver an activity design that creates built-in dead spots.Khristen gives listeners a simple test: before you try any end-of-class activity, ask, “How many students are actively participating at the same time?” If the answer isn't “everyone,” scrap it for a more structured routine. She's all about activities where all students make a choice—writing, moving, voting, reflecting, partner-sharing—anything that involves the entire room at once, with a timer and a clear start and stop. That's how you move from hoping for engagement to actually getting it.Middle and high school teachers juggling multiple preps, this episode is tailor-made for your reality. If you're tired of walking into your next period already drained, start matching the right kind of activity to those last hectic minutes. Filler activities backfire in a secondary classroom because they create drift and drain your energy—not because you're not engaging enough. Khristen's take? It's time to rebel against “but it's a game—they should love it” thinking and get honest about what really steers classroom routines. For teachers seeking work-life balance and less stress, Khristen's “all play” approach means you're not burning energy on crowd control. You're crafting predictable, repeatable routines that let you end class steady, not spent. Her advice? Before you hit play on any filler, check if it involves the whole class. If not, save it for another time, and choose something structured that keeps everyone engaged. The Secondary Teacher Podcast is all about real teacher tips—no fluff, just hard-earned wisdom. Host Khristen Massic closes with encouragement: it's not your fault when “fun” activities fizzle. You're not failing; you're learning to pick routines that work for the real kids in front of you.Stand tall, skip the dead air, and end your class strong. Class dismissed—on your terms.Too many preps and not enough time? In this episode, hosts Freddy Morris and Joe Juvland get into the classic Twilight Zone story, "The Mind of the Matter." Originally aired during the show's second season, this episode follows Archibald Beechcroft, a man who becomes increasingly frustrated with the bustling crowds and inconsiderate people around him. After acquiring the ability to alter reality simply by focusing his mind, Beechcroft uses his power to remove annoyances from his life and eventually reshape the world to his liking. However, his experiments with omnipotence lead to unexpected and isolating consequences, driving home the story's central themes of loneliness, hubris, and the dangers of unchecked control.    Freddy and Joe explore the plot twists in depth, including the moment Beechcroft realizes that a world entirely of people like himself is intolerable. They discuss how this episode reflects the series' signature commentary on human nature and society. The hosts also highlight the enduring impact of the narrative, noting how its moral and psychological undertones remain relevant to contemporary audiences who grapple with similar frustrations in an overcrowded world.

This may sound like a very esoteric subject for our weekly podcast, but did you know this year is the 100th anniversary of the landmark Supreme Court case of Euclid v. Ambler Realty? No, really—it is! We're not making this up. Okay, we know what you're thinking: what is Euclid v. Ambler Realty and why should I care, especially a hindred years later? The Euclid decision, written by one of the most conservative and principled Justices of the Supreme Court (George Sutherland) declared that land use zoning was constitutional and didn't violate the "takings clause" of the 5th Amendment ("No shall private property be taken for public use without just compensation"). I know: stifle your excitement. But don't zone out on us. John and Steve agree (for once) that Sutherland got this one badly wrong, and trust us, we liven it up in our discussion.Lucretia, hostess for this week's episode, wonders whether there is a "right to protest." Sure the 1st Amendment protects freedom of speech and the right to assemble, but does it actually protect protests—like those we see in Minneapolis right now, where the dividing line between protest and active interference of federal law enforcement is hard to make out (on purpose). Then, finally, Lucretia gets Steve to reflect on the 20th anniversary of Al Gore's horror film about climate change, An Inconvenient Truth. Gore's film was hysterically wrong, but he's still with us somehow.

In this episode of PlanningxChange, Jess and Peter speak with Mary Reilly, a planner and educator with deep experience in rural land-use issues. Mary helps us unpack the widely discussed Old Mission case from Michigan - a dispute between wineries and a township over land-use controls that resulted in a major federal damages award (approx $50m US). The discussion does not explore the legal merits or the ongoing appeal; instead, it uses the case to illuminate broader lessons for planners everywhere. Mary reflects on how agricultural areas are changing, how councils manage risk, and how planning systems can better balance rural preservation with economic adaptation. She also draws on her teaching experience to explain how real cases help future planners understand complexity, conflict, and the value of clear decision-making. Five Key Themes We Explore 1. What the Old Mission case reveals about zoning and regulation Mary outlines how restrictive controls can create tension when agricultural enterprises diversify into tastings, events, weddings and food service — activities that increasingly blur the line between "farm" and "commercial." 2. Balancing preservation with economic survival Many farms depend on supplementary income. Mary discusses how planners can support this economic reality while still protecting landscape character, amenity and long-standing rural values. 3. Managing risk for councils and planners A large damages award raises questions about insurance coverage and liability. Mary talks about how planners can help councils navigate uncertainty through clearer drafting, transparent process and sound policy grounding. 4. The unique pressures on small rural municipalities Old Mission, like many small townships, has limited planning resources. Mary explores how smaller councils can respond to complex disputes and why early community engagement can prevent escalation. 5. Lessons for planning education and practice Drawing on her academic work, Mary explains how real planning conflicts — like Old Mission — help students and practitioners think critically about regulation, equity, and the evolving expectations placed on rural land. Podcast Extra / Culture Corner Mary recommends Zoned in the USA by Sonia Hirt (https://www.cornellpress.cornell.edu/book/9780801479878/zoned-in-the-usa/#bookTabs=1) and 'Paris Tea'. Jess recommends going off-line and embracing being bored. Pete recommends furniture beeswax (https://gillysaustralia.com.au) and maintaining the things around you. Episode released 27 November 2025.
