Rate by Donna Gene Stankey, Ramona Hammel https://www.amazon.com/Rate-Donna-Gene-Stankey/dp/1958920010 On this wintry December night in 1893, Millie had lots of time to think. His wife, Mina, was with child; and tonight, looked like the baby would arrive. His first child was a girl named Blanche, who was four years old. He was truly hoping for a boy, even knowing that Mina and Blanche both wanted a girl. Millie had thought back to the time when he and his family came to Michigan from Canada in the late 1870s. He reminisced about events and adventures this move had brought. He loved life on the farm. To him it was a very rewarding life. He hoped to be able to pass this passion he had for farming on to a son. He had dreamed of being married and having children. He remembered how his pa and ma favored his sister over him and his brother. He never wanted to do that to his children when he had them. He thought how nice it would be to have a son to carry on the family name. A son to help on the farm and eventually inherit it. A son would just make him feel complete as a man. Then came the words. “It’s a boy!” Millie heaved a heavy sigh. A son! He couldn’t wait to see him. He would call him Rate to honor his dad. Now he could look forward to this new chapter in his life. Only time would tell how this chapter would unfold.

Some love him. Some hate him. Some love to hate him. Some hate to love him. He is never shy to share his opinion. And he is never boring. The co-owner and founder of The Field of 68, JEFF GOODMAN returns to the podcast. Jeff weighs in on what he perceives to be the historically weak class of 2026 and why so many top college coaches aren't on the recruiting circuit like they used to be.We also dig in on the current state of money in college basketball and how the balance of power continues to shift. Then, we take a deep dive on Coach Darian DeVries and what has impressed Jeff as he has gotten to know Coach DD better. We talk about why Coach DD can succeed where Woody and Archie failed before him. And we get into what his expectations are for Indiana this season and he gives us his off-season grade for IU.Controversial at times, but Jeff Goodman has given his 10,000 hours to the game of covering college basketball and we welcome his perspective to the show.In addition, I take some time to pay tribute to an IU legend, Bob Hammel, who passed away this week.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
A majority of those working in aviation are ethical professionals, but it's also an industry that developed in the “Mad Men” era of predatory male-dominated power imbalances. Many of the resulting challenges and hierarchies remain to this day—and are sometimes still exploited. Award-winning investigative journalist and bestselling author Sara Hammel (follow her on Substack) joins us on the podcast to expose this dark side of the aviation industry, people who lead double lives, and the kinds of improvements that must be made. While preventing sexual harassment, assault, and retaliation is a critical goal itself, this issue also has major implications on safety and “just culture” within the industry.

The Legacy and Impact of the Farm-to-Table Movement in Chicago Chef Jason Hammel Come join us as one of Chicago's most iconic chefs, Jason Hammel, takes us back to the 1990s, tracing his journey from East Coast outsider to one of the Midwest's most passionate advocates for hyper-local sourcing. He'll recount the early days of the farm-to-table movement, the founding of Green City Market, and the rise of restaurants dedicated to local ingredients. Lula Café, his restaurant of 25 years, has grown in parallel step to this movement, and through stories from its early days, he'll highlight the challenges and resistance that once stood in its way. But this conversation isn't just about the past—it's about the economic and ethical decisions chefs face when choosing where and how to source their ingredients. As Hammel enters his third decade in the industry, he'll reflect on the movement's impact: What has changed in the restaurant world and beyond? What progress has been made for local, organic producers? And what does the future hold for Lula, for chefs across the Midwest, and for the next evolution of farm-to-table dining? BIOGRAPHY: Jason Hammel is the executive chef and owner of Lula Cafe in Chicago, the Logan Square eatery known for its seasonal cuisine. His debut cookbook, The Lula Cafe Cookbook: Collected Recipes and Stories, was published by Phaidon in 2024. Growing up in New Haven, Connecticut, Hammel aspired to be a writer, not a chef. After graduating in 1994 with a degree in English, he traveled to Italy, where an accidental stay across the street from Florence's central market foresaw his career as a chef dedicated to seasonality. In 2017 the Museum of Contemporary Art named Chef Hammel as executive chef/culinary curator for the museum's new restaurant, Marisol, Hammel himself was named the Jean Banchet 2019 Chef of the Year, and in 2024 Lula Cafe was awarded for Outstanding Hospitality by the James Beard Foundation. Today Hammel splits his time between Lula, Marisol, and the non-profit food education group Pilot Light, which he co-founded in 2010. jasonhammel@lulacafe.com / instagram Recorded via Zoom on April 16, 2025 CONNECT WITH CULINARY HISTORIANS OF CHICAGO ✔ MEMBERSHIP https://culinaryhistorians.org/membership/ ✔ EMAIL LIST http://culinaryhistorians.org/join-our-email-list/ ✔ S U B S C R I B E https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6Y0-9lTi1-JYu22Bt4_-9w ✔ F A C E B O O K https://www.facebook.com/CulinaryHistoriansOfChicago ✔ PODCAST 2008 to Present https://culinaryhistorians.org/podcasts/ By Presenter https://culinaryhistorians.org/podcasts-by-presenter/ ✔ YOUTUBE https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6Y0-9lTi1-JYu22Bt4_-9w ✔ W E B S I T E https://www.CulinaryHistorians.org

Jason Hammel enjoyed being back at Cubs Convention earlier this year. The former Chicago Cubs pitcher shared what he's been up to and recapped his time at the annual fanfest on the latest addition of the Cubs Weekly Podcast, chatting with host Andy Martínez. The pair discussed Hammel's 13-year big-league career, one that began in Tampa Bay with manager Joe Maddon. Hammel discussed his decision to sign with the Cubs ahead of the 2014 season, after they had lost 96 games the year prior. He discussed his relationship with the front office, the transparency they had and what it was like to be traded at the deadline that year, on the same day he pitched six innings of two-run ball for the Cubs.Later in the podcast, Hammel shares why he re-signed with the Cubs that following winter. He shares stories about the 2015 team and the World Series winning 2016 team, too. Hammel described the atmosphere of pitching in the playoffs at Wrigley Field, what it was like to finally win the World Series and what he does now with his World Series ring.

In the book, The Essence of a Woman, Cynthia's chapter is: Self-Esteem: The Road to Self-Empowerment where she helps the reader to realize, through her power quote: “The beauty you feel on the inside is the beauty you show to the world.” Cynthia was trained as an Opera Singer, where she writes music, writes poetry, and fully expected this to be her full-time passion and work. However, as life often does, an opportunity dropped in her lap, and as she evaluated the chance to pursue this dream abroad, she decided her young marriage was more important. And so, her next question was “Now what?” Chance took her into Electrolysis, where she not only helped herself (which you can read about in her chapter in the book) but also has been able to help a multitude of others during her 40-year career. In this interview, you will learn about her struggles, her ahha's, and how that changed the direction of her life to help so many. She helps people, especially women, discover their unique footprint of beauty in your world and loves helping people become the best they can be. In this session we will discuss: · What brought you to writing a chapter in The Essence of a Woman? · What has been the best part of writing in a collaboration? · What are some of the chapter titles? · How do you help your clients through your study of herbs, skin, nutrition, iridology, and music? · What is a suggestion you can give people to help them on their health journey? · How can people connect with you? This led us to connect with journalist Andrew Hammel to give a fair heaing to the case for Jens Soering's guilt. Before encountering this new information, we released two other projects featuring Jens Soering: Our previous interview with Jens Soering on Labyrinths: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/47-the-ultimate-putz-jens-soering/id1494368441?i=1000557496553 Our podcast series about the Haysom murders on The Truth About True Crime https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/killing-for-love-the-catalyst/id1439490091?i=1000440039285 Get early access to ad-free episodes, bonus content, and more by supporting Labyrinths on patreon. www.patreon.com/knoxrobinson www.knoxrobinson.com Twitter: @amandaknox | @manunderbridge IG: @amamaknox | @emceecarbon Learn more about your ad choices.
