Episode 17 - Martha Hammel and Tasia Pointsatte: Colorado and Beyond Martha and Tasia drop in to this episode of the podcast to educate us all on the future of psychedelic medicines through the lens of what's been happening in Colorado as a result of Prop 122, the Natural Medicine Act. Colorado has really laid the groundwork for all other states to follow and both Martha and Tasia know better than anyone as to what's working and what isn't. Also, they are the chairs of the Aspen Psychedelic Symposium which takes place on June 6th and 7th in Aspen. Their leadership has gone on to shape one of the great psychedelic gatherings on the planet! Martha Hammel is an advocate, activist, and educator in the psychedelic space. She holds a master's degree in nutrition in which she focused on the intersection of emotional trauma, addiction, and gut health. In her private coaching practice she supports clients through transformation healing, through nutrition, functional movement, psychedelic integration, and spiritual connection. She supports her local community as the executive director of the Aspen Psychedelic Resource Center, which provides community education and outreach regarding the safe use of plant medicine in the Roaring Fork Valley. Additionally, she provides integration support at 4 Winds farm, a women's transformational recovery center in Glenwood springs, and is an advisor for the National Psychedelic Association, supporting the psychedelic industry as it emerges in Oregon and Colorado. Tasia Poinsatte serves as the Colorado Director of the Healing Advocacy Fund (HAF), a nonprofit that works to protect and expand safe, affordable state-regulated access to psychedelic healing for all who need it. Her role involves extensive community engagement, bringing a range of perspectives, knowledge and experience into Colorado's policy process to set up a state-regulated psilocybin therapy program that is responsive to the diverse needs of those who will seek guidance and care in the new licensed framework. Prior to joining HAF, Tasia conducted research and advised strategy on progressive campaigns and causes in the US and internationally. Her background in qualitative and quantitative public opinion research informs her understanding of how to navigate and engage a tapestry of experiences, values and worldviews, seeking where possible to find the common threads that connect us.

Aspen Psychedelic Symposium is the focus of this conversation with Martha Hammel of the Aspen Psychedelic Resource Center and Tasia Poinsatte of Healing Advocacy Fund. They join Joe Moore to discuss this year's symposium, how it fits into Colorado's evolving natural medicine landscape, and why Aspen has become a strong setting for serious public conversations about psychedelics. Hammel explains that the symposium is now in its third year and is designed to bring major psychedelic voices to Colorado's West Slope. She also outlines the local roots of the Aspen Psychedelic Resource Center, which grew out of education and outreach work around decriminalization and the Natural Medicine Health Act. Poinsatte describes Healing Advocacy Fund's broader role across Oregon, Colorado, and New Mexico, where the group works on safe access, implementation, affordability, and public education.

Mandy and Cameron break down what it actually takes to build a career in sports law and why there is no single path in. Mandy highlights the role of persistence, networking, and starting in a non-attorney position, while Cameron shares how a traditional law firm path and a strategic in-house pivot led her to Fenway Sports Group. They also challenge common misconceptions about the field, explaining that their work focuses on commercial contracts, sponsorships, intellectual property, and business operations rather than player deals, and closely mirrors a traditional in-house legal role.   With practical insight for attorneys and law students, Mandy and Cameron discuss: Why there is no single “right” path into sports law — and how different experiences can position you to stand out How networking, persistence, and timing play a critical role in breaking into competitive industries Why strong contract drafting skills and broad legal experience are essential for in-house roles Why business judgment and a “find a way to yes” approach lead to stronger client relationships Why sports lawyers are often generalists who must navigate multiple areas of law simultaneously How building trust with internal stakeholders leads to better, more proactive legal support   They reflect on the evolving landscape of women in sports law, highlighting increased representation and leadership in recent years, as well as the collaborative nature of in-house work. Legal teams work closely with marketing, sales, HR, and operations to support broader business goals. Ultimately, Mandy and Cameron emphasize that success depends on being a well-rounded, business-savvy lawyer who can adapt, solve problems, and contribute beyond purely legal analysis.   Featured Guests Mandy Petrillo — Assistant General Counsel at Fenway Sports Group, Mandy has spent nearly two decades with the organization, supporting the Boston Red Sox and related entities across a wide range of commercial, intellectual property, and business matters. Cameron Hammel — Senior Counsel at Fenway Sports Group, Cameron brings experience from both a major law firm and in-house entertainment company, advising on commercial contracts, technology agreements, and business operations within the organization. Rate by Donna Gene Stankey, Ramona Hammel https://www.amazon.com/Rate-Donna-Gene-Stankey/dp/1958920010 On this wintry December night in 1893, Millie had lots of time to think. His wife, Mina, was with child; and tonight, looked like the baby would arrive. His first child was a girl named Blanche, who was four years old. He was truly hoping for a boy, even knowing that Mina and Blanche both wanted a girl. Millie had thought back to the time when he and his family came to Michigan from Canada in the late 1870s. He reminisced about events and adventures this move had brought. He loved life on the farm. To him it was a very rewarding life. He hoped to be able to pass this passion he had for farming on to a son. He had dreamed of being married and having children. He remembered how his pa and ma favored his sister over him and his brother. He never wanted to do that to his children when he had them. He thought how nice it would be to have a son to carry on the family name. A son to help on the farm and eventually inherit it. A son would just make him feel complete as a man. Then came the words. “It’s a boy!” Millie heaved a heavy sigh. A son! He couldn’t wait to see him. He would call him Rate to honor his dad. Now he could look forward to this new chapter in his life. Only time would tell how this chapter would unfold.

The Legacy and Impact of the Farm-to-Table Movement in Chicago Chef Jason Hammel Come join us as one of Chicago's most iconic chefs, Jason Hammel, takes us back to the 1990s, tracing his journey from East Coast outsider to one of the Midwest's most passionate advocates for hyper-local sourcing. He'll recount the early days of the farm-to-table movement, the founding of Green City Market, and the rise of restaurants dedicated to local ingredients. Lula Café, his restaurant of 25 years, has grown in parallel step to this movement, and through stories from its early days, he'll highlight the challenges and resistance that once stood in its way. But this conversation isn't just about the past—it's about the economic and ethical decisions chefs face when choosing where and how to source their ingredients. As Hammel enters his third decade in the industry, he'll reflect on the movement's impact: What has changed in the restaurant world and beyond? What progress has been made for local, organic producers? And what does the future hold for Lula, for chefs across the Midwest, and for the next evolution of farm-to-table dining? BIOGRAPHY: Jason Hammel is the executive chef and owner of Lula Cafe in Chicago, the Logan Square eatery known for its seasonal cuisine. His debut cookbook, The Lula Cafe Cookbook: Collected Recipes and Stories, was published by Phaidon in 2024. Growing up in New Haven, Connecticut, Hammel aspired to be a writer, not a chef. After graduating in 1994 with a degree in English, he traveled to Italy, where an accidental stay across the street from Florence's central market foresaw his career as a chef dedicated to seasonality. In 2017 the Museum of Contemporary Art named Chef Hammel as executive chef/culinary curator for the museum's new restaurant, Marisol, Hammel himself was named the Jean Banchet 2019 Chef of the Year, and in 2024 Lula Cafe was awarded for Outstanding Hospitality by the James Beard Foundation. Today Hammel splits his time between Lula, Marisol, and the non-profit food education group Pilot Light, which he co-founded in 2010. jasonhammel@lulacafe.com / instagram Recorded via Zoom on April 16, 2025 CONNECT WITH CULINARY HISTORIANS OF CHICAGO ✔ MEMBERSHIP https://culinaryhistorians.org/membership/ ✔ EMAIL LIST http://culinaryhistorians.org/join-our-email-list/ ✔ S U B S C R I B E https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6Y0-9lTi1-JYu22Bt4_-9w ✔ F A C E B O O K https://www.facebook.com/CulinaryHistoriansOfChicago ✔ PODCAST 2008 to Present https://culinaryhistorians.org/podcasts/ By Presenter https://culinaryhistorians.org/podcasts-by-presenter/ ✔ YOUTUBE https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6Y0-9lTi1-JYu22Bt4_-9w ✔ W E B S I T E https://www.CulinaryHistorians.org
