"Devoted to Doing What is Good," Confirmation Service, Mark 10 & Titus 3, The Rt. Rev. Steve Breedlove." This sermon comes to us from our diocesan bishop, the Rt. Rev. Steve Breedlove, at one of our confirmation services.
Since the beginning threats of God's wrath have been used to instill fear in others. Fear allows those in power to control others and further solidify their power. When religion abuses this fear it takes away our ability to explore, search, ask questions, grow, and become what God actually intends for us. Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount encourages his followers to ask God and seek out the good things of life together. Bad parents use fear to control their children and maintain their own power, good parents encourage kids to explore, to ask questions, to take risks so that they can grow into their best versions of themselves. God, Jesus says, is so much better than a good parent. As we celebrate with the youth affirming the promises of their Baptism in the Confirmation Service on Sunday, Pastor Chad reminds us that faith formation at Bethlehem is not about using fear to get kids to adhere to rigid set of rules & expectations or scoring points on a test but rather it is about living out Jesus' call to seek and ask and knock knowing that with God, the ultimate parent, we can find and receive and enter.

God is faithful to His promises to take and renew and save and restore human beings, through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ alone, through the work of the Holy Spirit. In this sense, today is another reminder that in Christ, by the Spirit, our Father is endlessly faithful and we are reminded of how to stay keen as a Christian!
We're sharing the whole Confirmation service so you can appreciate the depth of the student's gifts.
