Most people have never heard of Barzillai, yet his story offers a powerful picture of faithful endurance. In this episode, Pastor Larry Loewen and Noah Quiring continue our *Hidden Figures* series by examining the life of Barzillai, a man who served King David with generosity, loyalty, and humility. Rather than seeking influence or recognition, Barzillai focused on what mattered most—faithfulness to God and care for others. Through his example, we are invited to reflect on our own legacy and consider what it means to finish the race of faith well. Whether you're in a season of leadership, service, transition, or reflection, this message will encourage you to keep following God faithfully to the very end.
How did Peter the fisherman become Peter the faithful friend and church father? The answer is found in the faithfulness of Jesus. If ever there was a friend who sticks closer than a brother, Jesus is that friend. Peter, who had denied Jesus in His most vulnerable moment, is pursued and encouraged, transformed by the grace of God extended to him, and recommissioned by Jesus on a memorable day on the shores of the Sea of Galilee. This same Jesus is transforming us to be faithful friends who can extend His prophetic call, challenge, care, correction, and commission to others.

Matthew #51: Faithfully Waiting (Matthew 24:36-51) Rob Woodrum (5/24/26) Download My wife and oldest daughter were in Chicago once, trying to navigate our way to my son's house on the city's train service. This was back before it became much easier and all on your phone – at that time we had to buy metro cards and load them with the proper amount for our trip. My daughter had gotten hers in order and had gone through the turnstiles, but my wife and I encountered a problem and the cards wouldn't work.“Wait for us on that side, we'll be there soon!” we shouted to her above the noise on the busy platform. We finally got things squared away, paying more than we probably needed to, inserted our cards and moved through the turnstiles to look for my daughter. She was nowhere to be found. We looked around, confused and feeling a bit panicked, when we heard a shout from behind us. There she was, back from where we had just come, on the other side of the turnstiles, smiling sheepishly.“I got tired of waiting and came to see if I could help.” she offered. Happily, she got through and we made it to our train…but just barely. It can be a frustrating thing when we've asked someone to wait for us, and they don't do it or befuddle a plan by doing something extra. It can be a devastating thing if we fail to wait faithfully for Jesus when he told us to.This Sunday we'll be reading Matthew 24:36-51 in our study of that Gospel. In our text, Jesus makes it as explicit as he can that nobody will know just when Jesus will return. It's astonishing how many ignore that bit of Scripture.Jesus will use a few picture to emphasize the point. It will be like the days of Noah – everything going along as it always had until it doesn't. Some will be swept away in judgement, others will remain behind in safety. The only difference, apparently, is their faithfulness in waiting. Then Jesus tells a parable to explain what faithful waiting looks like. What was the faithful servant doing when the landowner returned? How does that contrast with the unfaithful servant – what parts are common denominators in both their descriptions? What do you think we learn about the nature of faithfully waiting for Jesus to return? What might it entail in a real-life scenario?Hopefully we'll be challenged and grow from our exploration of this text. We'll have a missions update from Suzy Zechman about In Deed and Truth ministries as well! Hope you can join us!Click here for a pdf of the teaching slideshow.
Austin Wadlow continues our series through 2 Timothy
This message explores Romans 13 and what it means to live faithfully in a complicated world. Rather than offering simplistic political answers, Paul calls followers of Jesus to become people of integrity, honor, and love – engaging culture without being consumed by it. The passage addresses authority, taxes, and moral living, but ultimately points toward a deeper transformation: becoming people who reflect Christ’s character in every relationship and situation. In a time marked by exhaustion, outrage, and division, this message invites us to consider what it looks like to carry the light of Jesus into the places we live, work, and speak.

A (late!) review of our April Book club book The Last Quarter of the Moon by Chi Zijian. A 90-year-old Evenki woman who has spent her life in the forests of northeast China herding reindeer recounts the story of her life, her people, and the encroachment of modernity and imperialism on how they live. A story of nature, love, loss, despair, and change, we also ask if someone who is not part of a particular ethnic group can truly capture their spirit, or are they doomed to orientalism at worst and essentialisation at best.May's book is The Party's Interests Come First by Joseph Torigian, check out the link below if you still need to buy a copy!Buy bookclub books here Buy me a coffeeLatest Substack postLinks to everythingSupport the showSign up for Buzzsprout to launch your podcasting journey: https://www.buzzsprout.com/?referrer_id=162442Subscribe to the Sinobabble Newsletter: https://sinobabble.substack.com/Support Sinobabble on Buy me a Coffee: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/Sinobabblepod

This week Pastor John focuses on the call to live faithfully even when facing difficult seasons of suffering. He explores how believers can navigate hardship by following the example of Jesus, who responded to his own suffering by entrusting himself to God. This message is anchored in the Scripture passage of 1 Peter 2:19-25, which highlights how Christ's patient endurance and sacrifice provide both an example and the ultimate hope for redemption.

Stewardship: Living Faithfully With What Belongs to God • Sunday Service Website: www.PastorTodd.org To Give: www.ToddCoconato.com/give Before we even begin to talk about what stewardship does, we must understand what stewardship is. In the biblical sense, stewardship is the recognition that everything we have belongs to God, and we have been entrusted as caretakers, not owners. A steward manages another's property according to the will and desires of the owner. From the very beginning, God established this principle. He created the world, placed man in it, and gave him responsibility, not ownership. This means our time, our resources, our gifts, our influence, and even our very lives are not ultimately ours, they are entrusted to us for a season to be used for His glory. Biblical stewardship is not just about money, it is about lordship. It answers the question: Who is really in charge? When we understand stewardship correctly, it shifts our mindset from possession to responsibility, from control to obedience, and from selfish ambition to Kingdom purpose. A good steward lives with accountability, knowing that one day we will give an account to God for how we handled what He placed in our hands. This is not meant to produce fear, but holy awareness and intentional living. Now let's walk through what stewardship looks like in action. 1. Stewardship Begins With Recognizing God Owns Everything Psalm 24:1 (NKJV) “The earth is the Lord's, and all its fullness, The world and those who dwell therein.” 2. Stewardship Is a Sacred Trust 1 Corinthians 4:2 (NKJV) “Moreover it is required in stewards that one be found faithful.” 3. Stewardship Includes How We Handle Finances Luke 16:10 (NKJV) “He who is faithful in what is least is faithful also in much; and he who is unjust in what is least is unjust also in much.” 4. Stewardship Involves Our Time Ephesians 5:15–16 (NKJV) “See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil.” 5. Stewardship Includes Our Gifts and Calling 1 Peter 4:10 (NKJV) “As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.” 6. Stewardship Requires Accountability Romans 14:12 (NKJV) “So then each of us shall give account of himself to God.” 7. Stewardship Is Proven Through Generosity Proverbs 11:25 (NKJV) “The generous soul will be made rich, And he who waters will also be watered himself.” 8. Stewardship Leads to Eternal Reward Matthew 25:21 (NKJV) “His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.'” This is the ultimate goal. Not applause from people, but approval from God. The faithful steward is rewarded, not just in this life, but in eternity. Notice the language: faithful over a few things leads to greater responsibility. God honors stewardship. He promotes those who prove trustworthy. Stewardship is not a side issue, it is central to the Christian life. It touches everything, how we think, how we live, how we give, and how we serve. When we embrace stewardship, we stop living for ourselves and start living with purpose, intentionality, and Kingdom vision. One day, we all want to hear those words, “Well done.” That begins with how we steward what is already in our hands right now.

What do we do when God gives us a promise… but then, makes us wait? Specifically… MUCH longer we're comfortable with? When the doors we want doesn't open… When everything in your life feels like it's on a perpetual pause? Because if we're being honest—waiting is one of the hardest parts of walking with God. You see we live in a culture where waiting is discarded for the convenience of “NOW”. From Fast food, to cell phones for the immediate connection, to the click of a mouse sending a message to someone around the world in literal seconds. Today, we do not value waiting… we discard it. However, the Bible gives us clear examples of “heavy” seasons of waiting … that they aren't wasted. They're invested. What if, in the silence… God is not only teaching your patience and faith, but also strengthening you? What if, in the delay… He's preparing something much greater than you ever imagined? We're diving into powerful Biblical examples—men and women who had to wait… Abraham… Joseph… David… Hannah… All faced the trial of time… But they also experienced the rewards of it. And here's the truth: He may not resolve exactly when we want Him to… or when we believe He “needs to,” but He is ALWAYS on time. We start a new series in Daniel by tracing how God's people end up in Babylon and what it means to live faithful lives inside a broken kingdom. We wrestle with God's discipline, the pain of paying for sins we didn't choose, and the hope that God never wastes sacrifice because he did not waste his Son. • why the church turns to the Book of Daniel now and what faithfulness can look like in a fractured culture • the storyline from creation to exile and the warning against wanting the best of God and the world • Babylon, Nebuchadnezzar, and the pressure to treat God as one option among many • the core theology of Daniel: one God over all places, all times, and all power • why God oversees discipline needed for good ends • suffering reframed as God removing goodness rather than simply adding pain • a clear picture of hell as the absence of God's good gifts • Manasseh, leadership sin, and why judgment can be appropriate • the reality of paying for the sins of parents and rulers we did not pick • God never wastes sacrifice and God never wastes faithfulness • how Daniel's story echoes Jesus through Psalm 22 and the promise of hope If you want to learn more about the MidTree story or connect with us, go to our website HERE or text us at 812-MID-TREE.

Here Be Dragons (Meditation 3): Trusting God in Silence and Darkness Bishop Michael Hunn of the Diocese of the Rio Grande offers the third meditation in “Here Be Dragons: three meditations on the apophatic Way,” reflecting on Jesus' raw prayer in Gethsemane and the apophatic experience of Holy Week where praise turns to abandonment and silence. He argues Christian leadership keeps tending earthly responsibilities while remaining open to God's will, practicing costly trust rather than resignation. Hunn critiques the urge to fill hospital rooms and church meetings with easy answers, insisting darkness and silence are not empty but the soil of resurrection that strips away false images of God tied to success or influence. He urges shared resources across a wealthy church and describes cyclists navigating dark tunnels by lightly touching shoulders, a metaphor for staying connected in risky ministry, reaching out, listening, and trusting God is quietly at work. 00:00 Welcome and Series Intro 00:37 Gethsemane and Surrender 02:07 Silence and Trust 03:42 Tomb Silence and Resurrection 05:20 Ministry Beyond the Map 06:53 God Is Good All the Time 07:55 Sharing Resources in the Church 08:48 Peloton Through Dark Tunnels 10:19 Leadership in Apophatic Times 12:53 Keep Searching and Closing Silence
What does it really take to engage younger generations—and why do so many of our assumptions about them fall short? In this episode, Loren Richmond Jr. talks with sociologist Dr. Josh Packard about his book Faithful Futures and what churches often misunderstand about Gen Z and Gen Alpha. Drawing from years of research, Packard challenges the tendency to reduce younger generations to stereotypes and instead invites leaders to approach them with curiosity, humility, and a posture of listening. The conversation explores how rapid cultural change has created a “fast and slow” dynamic in young people's lives, why relationships—not institutions—are now the primary source of trust, and how churches can rethink formation beyond simply passing down right answers. They also discuss the importance of communal worship in an age of loneliness, the role of sacred space, and how young people are constructing “micro-narratives” of meaning in a world where institutional authority is often questioned. Together they explore: Why generational stereotypes fail—and what to focus on instead The “fast and slow” reality of growing up today How trust has shifted from institutions to relationships Why listening matters more than giving answers The role of communal worship and sacred space in a lonely world How young people build meaning through “micro-narratives” Dr. Josh Packard is the co-founder of Future of Faith and one of the foremost experts in the spiritual lives of American youth and religious trends in the United States. He is an accomplished researcher in the sociology of religion and new forms of religious expression. He is a frequent keynote speaker and acts as an advisor and board member to a number of faith-based organizations. Josh has authored numerous books and articles in both popular and academic outlets including the recently released Faithful Futures: Sacred Tools for Engaging Younger Generations. Previous books include Church Refugees: Sociologists reveal why people are DONE with church but not their faith and Meaning Making: 8 Values That Drive America's Newest Generations. Poem: The Two Truths There are two truths that will set you free if you let them. The first is this. Everything you have right now in this very moment is more than you know. Not because your pain is small. Not because your losses do not matter. But because pain has a way of consuming all the light in the room until you believe it is the only thing that exists. It is not. Beneath the weight of what is wrong life is still moving through you. Quietly. Faithfully. Without condition. The breath that arrives before you ask for it. The heart that beats through every loss every fear every night you were certain you could not go on. This is not ordinary. This is everything. And when you place your hand over that faithful heart and you remember not what is missing but what is here, you become larger than your suffering. This is gratitude. Not a feeling. A power. And the second truth is this. You do not know what comes next. And I mean this not as a warning but as the most profound liberation you will ever be offered. Because the same uncertainty that makes you afraid is the very thing that makes your healing possible. Your transformation possible. Your joy possible. Nothing is sealed. Nothing is final. The future has made no promises to your fear. Maybe the thing you dread most will never arrive. Maybe the door that closed was never your door. Maybe the life you cannot yet imagine is already moving toward you from a direction you have not thought to look. Maybe is not hope. Maybe is truth. Because no one, not one soul who has ever lived, has been able to say with certainty what the next moment holds. And that means neither can your doubt. Neither can your despair. Neither can the voice that tells you this is all there is. It is not all there is. Gratitude reminds you of the ground beneath your feet. Uncertainty reminds you the horizon has no end. Together they ask only one thing of you. Stay open. You are not finished. The world is not finished with you. And the life that is seeking you is seeking you now through every unknown every unanswered prayer every moment you chose to remain. These are the two truths. What is here is enough. What is coming is possible. And you, standing between them, are exactly where you were always meant to be.
