“If you think change is hard, try not changing and see what happens.”Accounting Influencerswith Rob BrownIn part one of this Accounting Influencers podcast, special guest Hannah Munro, managing director of transformation consultancy with ITAS and host of the CFO 4.0 podcast, joins the conversation to unpack the realities of change and transformation in today's volatile world. More Accounting Influencers with Rob Brown here Munro makes one thing clear: change is no longer a future event to plan for—it is the present reality.“Transformation is a journey, not a one-step process,” Munro says. “It's about becoming comfortable in that VUCA environment—volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous—and building a skill set to navigate it.”The conversation kicks off by acknowledging just how fast change is accelerating. Munro points to the explosive growth of technologies like artificial intelligence, automation, and machine learning.“It's not just that things are changing—it's that the change itself is speeding up,” she explains. “Six months ago, no one was talking about ChatGPT. Now it's passing bar exams and accounting qualifications.”For finance professionals, that pace of change means one thing: roles are evolving rapidly. Traditional tasks like data entry, reconciliations, and basic reporting are being automated. Munro warns that anything transactional is at risk.

On this bonus episode of CASCADE OF HISTORY, Feliks Banel remembers former Washington Secretary of State Ralph Munro, who passed away March 20, 2025. In this archival interview from 2021, Munro recalls the Washington Centennial of 1889, the family origins of the centennial license plate, and agrees that he likely had more fun as Secretary of State (from 1981 to 2001) than any of his predecessors or successors. Alice Munro, a winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature, was perhaps the most acclaimed short-story writer of our time. After her death, last year, her youngest daughter, Andrea Skinner, revealed that Munro's partner, Gerald Fremlin, had sexually abused her starting when she was nine years old. The abuse was known in the family, but, even after Fremlin was convicted, Munro stood by him, at the expense of her relationship with her daughter. In this episode, the New Yorker staff writer Rachel Aviv joins the magazine's editor, David Remnick, to talk about how and why a writer known for such astonishing powers of empathy could betray her own child, and how Munro touched on this family trauma in fiction. “Her writing makes you think about art at what expense,” Aviv tells Remnick. “That's probably a question that is relevant for many artists, but Alice Munro makes it visible on the page. It felt so literal—like trading your daughter for art.”Follow The New Yorker Radio Hour wherever you get your podcasts. Learn about your ad choices: dovetail.prx.org/ad-choices

The Freeway Killer, Bill Bonin, was a notorious American serial killer who, alongside his accomplices, terrorized Southern California in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Bonin, often referred to as the "Freeway Killer" due to his victims' bodies being dumped along highways and freeways, is believed to have murdered at least 14 young men and boys between 1979 and 1980, though the exact number is still debated. His victims, often hitchhikers or male prostitutes, were sexually assaulted, tortured, and then killed, typically by strangulation or blunt force trauma.Bonin was a former military man with a history of violent offenses and was described as being charismatic yet extremely manipulative. He lured many of his victims by offering them rides, only to overpower them and subject them to horrific abuse. His killing spree was initially difficult to track, as he often discarded the bodies in remote locations along freeways in Los Angeles and surrounding areas. After his arrest in 1980, Bonin was convicted of 10 murders, though he was linked to additional cases. He was sentenced to death in 1982 and spent years on death row at San Quentin State Prison. Bonin was finally executed by lethal injection in 1996, after his appeals were exhausted. His crimes left a lasting legacy of fear in Southern California and remain one of the most chilling chapters in the history of American serial killers.Bonin's case also highlighted the disturbing nature of his accomplices, including a man named James Munro, Gregory Miley and Vernon Butts, who participated in some of the killings, contributing to the complexity and scope of the crimes. The Freeway Killer case remains a tragic example of the dangers lurking within society, as well as the dark psyche of a man who carried out his brutal acts under the radar for several years before justice was finally served.https://linktr.ee/UnforbiddentruthBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/unforbidden-truth--4724561/support.

Then we put him to the test with questions that only women and adults would know the answers to, just to see how much wisdom he's gathered in his 12 years. Clare Balding is celebrating a listener's birthday today. Not something we've done before, but when we heard that Lynda Pettit was marking her 60th birthday by walking 60 different routes with 60 different people, and that the idea was partly inspired by Ramblings, well we just had to join in, especially as it's Clare's 25th year on Ramblings (double celebrations!). Lynda and several friends took Clare for a hike on the Stoney Path walk in the Pentland Hills near West Linton, about 20 miles south of Edinburgh. They met outside The Gordon Arms Hotel on the A702 and went up into the southern Pentlands. It's a route that takes in the Old Roman road that heads up to Edinburgh; Stoney Path, also known as Thieves Road, an ancient droving track used by cattle reivers herding stolen livestock through the hills; and Baddinsgill Reservoir. They also ascended Mount Maw, catching sight of a beautiful cloud inversion on the way. Views from the top stretched around 80 miles to a snow-capped Ben Lomond, Scotland's most southerly Munro. Fanatic, released in 1982 and later distributed by Troma under the title The Last Horror Film, is an ambitious yet confused attempt at blending psychological thriller, horror, satire, and social commentary. Directed by David Winters, the film follows Vinny Durand (Joe Spinell), a socially awkward taxi driver in New York who dreams of becoming a Hollywood filmmaker. Vinny's obsession with horror star Jana Bates (Caroline Munro) takes a dark turn when he follows her to the Cannes Film Festival, believing he can convince her to star in his debut film. Soon, people connected to Jana begin to disappear, leaving the audience to wonder if Vinny's fantasies have turned murderous. On the surface, Fanatic has all the trappings of a Taxi Driver knockoff, with Spinell's Vinny bearing eerie similarities to De Niro's Travis Bickle: a lonely man whose delusions of grandeur lead to a disturbing descent into obsession. However, where Taxi Driver offers a focused character study and searing critique of urban decay, Fanatic meanders between tones, never quite deciding what it wants to be. Is it a darkly comedic jab at the absurdity of the film industry, with its over-the-top Cannes sequences and caricatured players? A horror film dissecting the dangers of unchecked fandom? Or a social critique of anti-horror activists and censorship? The movie flirts with all these ideas but fails to commit to any, leaving the audience in a muddled state of uncertainty. There's undeniable charm in its chaotic ambition, but the result is a mishmash of clashing themes and tonal inconsistencies. What Fanatic does have, however, is Joe Spinell. His performance is nothing short of extraordinary, especially given the film's modest budget. Spinell imbues Vinny with a mix of vulnerability, creepiness, and manic energy that is utterly captivating. His ability to oscillate between pitiable and menacing elevates the film far beyond what one might expect from a low-budget production, especially one released by Troma. Spinell's portrayal is a masterclass in character work, showing what can be achieved even in a film with clear limitations. Despite its flaws, Fanatic has its moments of intrigue and campy fun. The Cannes backdrop offers a unique setting for a horror film, and there's an undeniable novelty in watching Spinell and Munro share the screen again after Maniac. But for all its ambition, Fanatic ultimately bites off more than it can chew. It's a film that tries to be everything and ends up being little more than a curiosity piece—worth watching for Spinell's mesmerizing performance, but a frustrating experience for those hoping for cohesion or a clear narrative purpose.
“My life has gone rosy, again,” Alice Munro told a friend in a buoyant letter of March 1975. For Munro, who was then emerging as one of her generation's leading writers, the previous few years had been blighted by heartbreak and upheaval: a painful separation from her husband of two decades; a retreat from British Columbia back to her native Ontario; a series of brief but bruising love affairs, in which, it seems, Munro could never quite make out the writing on the wall. “This time it's real,” she wrote, speaking of a new romantic partner, Gerald Fremlin, the emphasis acknowledging that her friend had heard these words before. “He's 50, free, a good man if I ever saw one, tough and gentle like in the old tire ads, and this is the big thing — grown-up.”The judgment would prove premature. In July 2024, two months after Munro's death at age 92, Andrea Skinner, the youngest of her three daughters, revealed in an essay in The Toronto Star that Fremlin had sexually abused her. Sir Thomas Munro (1761–1827) was a distinguished British administrator and soldier who played a pivotal role in shaping British governance in India. Born in Scotland, he joined the British East India Company in 1779 and quickly gained recognition for his military and administrative skills. Munro participated in key conflicts, including the Third Anglo-Mysore War, where he proved instrumental in securing British victories against Tipu Sultan. He is best remembered for his tenure as the Governor of Madras Presidency (1820–1827), during which he implemented significant reforms. Munro pioneered the Ryotwari system, a land revenue system that dealt directly with individual farmers, bypassing middlemen and ensuring a more equitable taxation process. His approach was rooted in his deep understanding of Indian society, which he studied extensively. A firm believer in justice and fair treatment, Munro was known for his empathetic administration and efforts to improve the lives of the people under his governance. He was knighted in 1825 for his services. Tragically, he succumbed to cholera in 1827 while touring the northern districts of Madras. Munro's legacy endures as a symbol of effective governance and reform in colonial India, and his statue still stands in Chennai as a testament to his contributions. KiranPrabha narrates most interesting parts of Thomas Munro's life in this episode.

Rachel Aviv reports on the terrible conundrum of Alice Munro for The New Yorker. Munro was a winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature and perhaps the most acclaimed writer of short stories of our time, but her legacy darkened after her death when her youngest daughter, Andrea Skinner, revealed that Munro's partner had sexually abused her beginning when she was nine years old. The crime was known in the family, but even after a criminal conviction of Gerald Fremlin, Munro stood by him, at the expense of her relationship with Skinner. In her piece, Aviv explores how, and why, a writer of such astonishing powers of empathy could betray her own child, and discusses the ways that Munro touched on this family trauma in fiction. “Her writing makes you think about art at what expense,” she tells David Remnick. “That's probably a question that is relevant for many artists, but Alice Munro makes it visible on the page. It felt so literal—like trading your daughter for art.”
