The Last of the Mohicans by James Fenimore Cooper原文Chapter IX: In the Hurons' VillageUncas was not afraid. The Hurons ran around him. They shouted. They pulled him towards the wooden building.Uncas saw Duncan outside the building.'Hawk-eye is safe, Uncas,' Duncan said quietly. Then the Hurons took Uncas into the meeting-house.Duncan walked through the village. He looked in the houses.Nobody stopped him. Nobody asked any questions. But Duncan did not find Alice and Cora.He went back to the meeting-house. He went inside.Uncas was standing and the chiefs were sitting.Duncan sat down too. He sat near the wall. Then another Huron came into the building. It was Magua! Magua did not see Duncan. But he saw Uncas. He shouted, 'Mohican, you must die!'Magua was angry. He turned to the chiefs.'Many Hurons died at Glenn's Falls,' he said. 'This Mohican is our enemy!'Magua and two Huron stook the young Mohican out of the meeting-house.Then one of the chiefs spoke to Duncan.'Medicine man, the wife of one of my men is ill- she is sick. Can you make her well?''Take me to the woman,' said Duncan. He followed the chief out of the meeting-house.They went towards a hill. There was a cave in the hill.Duncan saw a bear following them, but he was not afraid.Indians liked bears. They often had bears at their villages.Duncan followed the chief into the cave. The cave was large, and there were many rooms with stone walls. The chief took Duncan into one room. The sick woman was lying on the ground. Some other women were with her.Duncan looked at the sick woman. She is dying, he thought. The Huron chief waited and looked at Duncan.Duncan turned to the Huron chief.'I must look at this sick woman alone ,' he said. 'My medicine is secret. Go with these four women. Wait outside.'The chief and the four women left the cave.A few minutes later, the bear came into the cave. The bear made a loud noise.Duncan looked at the bear.Again, the bear made a loud noise. It walked towards Duncan.Suddenly, it took off its head!It was Hawk-eye! Hawk-eye was wearing a bear's skin!'What?' said Duncan. Then he laughed. 'Why are you wearing a bear's skin?' he asked.'I found the bear's skin in a Huron's house,' said Hawk-eye. 'Now the Hurons will not stop me. But tell me. Where is Miss Alice?''I have been unlucky. I have not found Alice or Cora. And Uncas is a prisoner of the Hurons.''Magua has taken Miss Cora to the village of the Delawares,' said Hawk-eye.'I heard two Hurons talking about her. Chingachgook and Munro are safe in the forest.'Then Hawk-eye heard a noise. He looked over as tone wall.'Miss Alice is in the next room!' he said.Duncan went into the next room. There were some blankets, cloths and animals' skins in the room. And there was Alice. Her hands and feet were tied with rope. Her face was white. She was afraid.'Duncan!' she said. 'You are here.''Yes,' said Duncan. He untied her hands and feet.'Where is Cora?' asked Alice. 'Where is my father?''Your father is safe. He is with Chingachgook,' said Duncan.'And Cora?' Alice asked again.'She is near here. She is at another village,' said Duncan. 'She is with the Delawares.'Suddenly, somebody came into the room. It was Magua!

Comenzó escribiendo para periódicos como The Morning Post y The Westminster Gazette. The Chronicles of Clovis (1911). Beasts and Super-Beasts (1914). La ventana abierta (The Open Window).

But would you trust one to handle the precision of a classification task? It's an unlikely fit for an LLM. Classifiers typically need to be fast, accurate, and interpretable. LLMs are slow, random black-boxes. Classifiers need to output a single label. LLMs never stop talking. And yet, there are good reasons to use LLMs for such tasks, and emerging architectures and techniques. Many real-world use cases need a classifier, and many data and product development teams will soon find themselves wondering: could GPT handle that?If that sounds like you, then check out this extended episode to explore how Switzerland's largest telecommunications provider tackles this issue while building a next-generation AI assistant. Alice Munro, a winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature, was perhaps the most acclaimed short-story writer of our time. After her death, last year, her youngest daughter, Andrea Skinner, revealed that Munro's partner, Gerald Fremlin, had sexually abused her starting when she was nine years old. The abuse was known in the family, but, even after Fremlin was convicted, Munro stood by him, at the expense of her relationship with her daughter. In this episode, the New Yorker staff writer Rachel Aviv joins the magazine's editor, David Remnick, to talk about how and why a writer known for such astonishing powers of empathy could betray her own child, and how Munro touched on this family trauma in fiction. “Her writing makes you think about art at what expense,” Aviv tells Remnick. “That's probably a question that is relevant for many artists, but Alice Munro makes it visible on the page. It felt so literal—like trading your daughter for art.”Follow The New Yorker Radio Hour wherever you get your podcasts. Learn about your ad choices: dovetail.prx.org/ad-choices

The Freeway Killer, Bill Bonin, was a notorious American serial killer who, alongside his accomplices, terrorized Southern California in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Bonin, often referred to as the "Freeway Killer" due to his victims' bodies being dumped along highways and freeways, is believed to have murdered at least 14 young men and boys between 1979 and 1980, though the exact number is still debated. His victims, often hitchhikers or male prostitutes, were sexually assaulted, tortured, and then killed, typically by strangulation or blunt force trauma.Bonin was a former military man with a history of violent offenses and was described as being charismatic yet extremely manipulative. He lured many of his victims by offering them rides, only to overpower them and subject them to horrific abuse. His killing spree was initially difficult to track, as he often discarded the bodies in remote locations along freeways in Los Angeles and surrounding areas. After his arrest in 1980, Bonin was convicted of 10 murders, though he was linked to additional cases. He was sentenced to death in 1982 and spent years on death row at San Quentin State Prison. Bonin was finally executed by lethal injection in 1996, after his appeals were exhausted. His crimes left a lasting legacy of fear in Southern California and remain one of the most chilling chapters in the history of American serial killers.Bonin's case also highlighted the disturbing nature of his accomplices, including a man named James Munro, Gregory Miley and Vernon Butts, who participated in some of the killings, contributing to the complexity and scope of the crimes. The Freeway Killer case remains a tragic example of the dangers lurking within society, as well as the dark psyche of a man who carried out his brutal acts under the radar for several years before justice was finally served.https://linktr.ee/UnforbiddentruthBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/unforbidden-truth--4724561/support.

Today we have a special co-host—Kayla's 12-year-old son, Munro! (Can you believe he's 12?!). We thought we were going to have a normal episode, but of course, we couldn't resist putting Munro in the hot seat and turning it into a full-on interview We dive into Munro's crippling fear of—wait for it—dinosaurs and swear words (yes, still). Then we put him to the test with questions that only women and adults would know the answers to, just to see how much wisdom he's gathered in his 12 years. Finally, we debate who we think are the most famous people in the world of acting, singing, and sports. Do you agree with our picks? Tune in and let us know! Learn more about your ad choices. Clare Balding is celebrating a listener's birthday today. Not something we've done before, but when we heard that Lynda Pettit was marking her 60th birthday by walking 60 different routes with 60 different people, and that the idea was partly inspired by Ramblings, well we just had to join in, especially as it's Clare's 25th year on Ramblings (double celebrations!). Lynda and several friends took Clare for a hike on the Stoney Path walk in the Pentland Hills near West Linton, about 20 miles south of Edinburgh. They met outside The Gordon Arms Hotel on the A702 and went up into the southern Pentlands. It's a route that takes in the Old Roman road that heads up to Edinburgh; Stoney Path, also known as Thieves Road, an ancient droving track used by cattle reivers herding stolen livestock through the hills; and Baddinsgill Reservoir. They also ascended Mount Maw, catching sight of a beautiful cloud inversion on the way. Views from the top stretched around 80 miles to a snow-capped Ben Lomond, Scotland's most southerly Munro. “My life has gone rosy, again,” Alice Munro told a friend in a buoyant letter of March 1975. For Munro, who was then emerging as one of her generation's leading writers, the previous few years had been blighted by heartbreak and upheaval: a painful separation from her husband of two decades; a retreat from British Columbia back to her native Ontario; a series of brief but bruising love affairs, in which, it seems, Munro could never quite make out the writing on the wall. “This time it's real,” she wrote, speaking of a new romantic partner, Gerald Fremlin, the emphasis acknowledging that her friend had heard these words before. “He's 50, free, a good man if I ever saw one, tough and gentle like in the old tire ads, and this is the big thing — grown-up.”The judgment would prove premature. In July 2024, two months after Munro's death at age 92, Andrea Skinner, the youngest of her three daughters, revealed in an essay in The Toronto Star that Fremlin had sexually abused her. Rachel Aviv reports on the terrible conundrum of Alice Munro for The New Yorker. Munro was a winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature and perhaps the most acclaimed writer of short stories of our time, but her legacy darkened after her death when her youngest daughter, Andrea Skinner, revealed that Munro's partner had sexually abused her beginning when she was nine years old. The crime was known in the family, but even after a criminal conviction of Gerald Fremlin, Munro stood by him, at the expense of her relationship with Skinner. In her piece, Aviv explores how, and why, a writer of such astonishing powers of empathy could betray her own child, and discusses the ways that Munro touched on this family trauma in fiction. “Her writing makes you think about art at what expense,” she tells David Remnick. “That's probably a question that is relevant for many artists, but Alice Munro makes it visible on the page. It felt so literal—like trading your daughter for art.”
