The San Francisco Giants need impact position players, and they need them badly. That was on display yet again in the SF Giants' loss to the Padres on Tuesday night. The Giants' offense went down without much of a fight, and after winning 11 of 13 against the D-Backs and Rockies, they've lost their first two against the Padres and need to win their season finale in order to finish at .500. There are several impact talents available in free agency this winter, and the Giants will need to come away with at least one of them. If the Giants fail to sign or trade for impact talent this winter, their fans will grow exponentially more restless, and they simply won't be good enough to compete for a championship in 2023. The Giants seem to recognize that they need to be far more aggressive in free agency this upcoming winter. Only time will tell. Joc Pederson was placed on the Family Medical Emergency list prior to the Giants' season finale. Locked On Giants wishes Pederson and his family well and sincerely hopes everything turns out okay. It's been a very strong season for Pederson, and Giants fans would welcome him back with open arms. Carlos Rodón was shut down, as expected, and Alex Cobb took his place in the rotation on short rest. Good for Cobb, who stepped up for a tired bullpen. Rodón may be out the door, but Cobb, Logan Webb, Alex Wood, Anthony DeSclafani, Jakob Junis, Sean Hjelle, and Kyle Harrison are all in the mix next year. It's a good position to start from, which should allow the San Francisco Giants should be able to devote their attention to fixing their glaring position player weaknesses. Week 4 of the Philadelphia Eagles 2022-2023 season is now in the books! The Birds beat the Jacksonville Jaguars by a score of 29-21 at The Linc in Philly in a very wet, rainy game. The Eagles are now 4-0 in the NFC, the only undefeated team in the NFL, first in the NFC East division, and continue to dominate the league!Once again, we saw a pretty stellar defensive performance, and especially up front as Trevor Lawrence fumbled and gave up each fumble to the Eagles. The Jags were only 2-7 on 3rd down. Lawrence threw for only 148 yards while the running backs only rushed for 71 total yards. Such great resilience and perseverance. Doug Pederson's return to The Linc and offensive game plan was no match for the Birds' defense. The offense won today's game on the ground. With 210 total rushing yards, Miles Sanders had a career day rushing the ball for 134 yards and two touchdowns. Jalen Hurts did throw an interception that was ugly, but he responded well after that mistake. Overall, a solid performance in a very rainy and adverse weather climate. As always, we gave our themes, takeaways and graded the units and coaches.Head over to our website for all of our podcasts and more: philadelphiasportstable.com.Follow the guys on Twitter:Jeff Warren: @Jeffrey_WarrenLen Hunsicker: @LenHunsickerErik Leonard: @BrickPolittFollow the show on Instagram: instagram.com/philadelphiasportstable

As we continue to explore our theme of Momentum, we turn to a new story focus for October: Uncharted Journey as we follow the story of Joseph in the book of Genesis. Pastor Chad asks us to think about the start of Joseph's journey as he goes from being his father's favorite son to being sold into slavery. It is certainly not the path Joseph had dreamed of but was it the path God set him on? Is God a puppet master pulling strings to steer Joseph into the hands of his brothers who intend to kill him, or into the pit where he is alone, or into the hands of slave traders? Are you on an unfortunate path because God wants you to suffer? Or is your good life because God pulled some strings in your favor? Pastor Chad reminds us that our God is not altering our path in life, for better or for worse, but rather is keeping a promise to accompany us on whatever twist & turn our path takes!

eek 4 of the 2022 NFL season and after a surviving a topsy-turvy three weeks of game results, expect some "normalcy" to return as it's becoming gradually easier to figure out the most and least reliable teams in the league.   That should mean only bigger and better things for Sporting News' picks and predictions against the spread going forward. Although these selections are for "entertainment purposes only", it's time to get serious to battle back against the numbers.     NFL picks against the spread for Week 4   Game of Midweek: Dolphins at Bengals (-3, 47.5 o/u)   By the numbers, the Dolphins defied logic with their win over the Bills to get to 3-0, following a near-impossible comeback to take down the Ravens. There is bound to be some regression to the mean and their blitzing defense plays well into the hands of Joe Burrow, who got well passing last week. Tua Tagovailoa's back injury and limited running game help will make this spot difficult in a hostile environment on a short week. Miami is bound for the classic letdown while Cincinnati continues marching back into the AFC playoff conversation. Pick: Bengals win 27-23 and cover the spread. Buccaneers over Chiefs (-2.5, 44 o/u)   Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs' offense couldn't get much of anything going against a very similar Todd Bowles-led Buccaneers defense in Super Bowl 55. The Bucs have their share of offensive issues around Tom Brady tied to injuries, but they will get a bit reinforced this week with weaponry and blocking to have a more balanced and explosive attack. Kansas City will see more of a compressed passing game again while Tampa Bay sees some expansion to how it usually has operated with the GOAT. Pick: Buccaneers win 24-23. AFC Game of the Week: Bills (-3.5, 52 o/u) at Ravens   The Bills statistically dominated the Dolphins with Josh Allen having another massive game. They ended up stopping themselves in critical situations that cost them the game. The Ravens melted down late against the Dolphins or they would be 3-0 instead give the way Lamar Jackson also has sparkled as a passer and runner, too. The health of Buffalo's secondary is a concern here, but its zone defense will contain the chunk plays from Jackson. Baltimore, even with its playmaking talent on the back end, has proved it can give up too much downfield because of needing to resort more to blitzing. Pick: Bills win 27-24 but fail to cover the spread. Lock of the Week: Packers (-10.5, 39 o/u) over Patriots   The Packers are back rolling with the ideal offense-defense complementary football with Matt LaFleur and Aaron Rodgers after their typical Week 1 mess. Rodgers outdueled the GOAT last week and now he'll take to the shell of his former team against a shockingly reeling Bill Belichick defense. The Patriots will need to hope that Brian Hoyer, filling in for an injured Mac Jones, can dig deep to find something more in the passing game while being too run heavy. That won't work well on the road in their current dysfunctional offensive state. Pick: Packers win 30-10 and cover the spread. Vikings (-2.5, 44 o/u) at Saints   Minnesota is still trying to figure out its offensive identity under Kevin O'Connell. The Vikings can be a massive passing team with Kirk Cousins and it's good they have found some big-play pop away from Justin Jefferson. They also got on track running vs. the Lions and can still have more success on the ground with or without Dalvin Cook. The Saints are all over the place in trying to find balance and explosiveness with Jameis Winston and will come in hurting more with key offensive injuries. Dennis Allen's defense can only contain so much in London. Pick: Vikings win 24-17 and cover the spread. Browns (-2.5, 48 o/u) at Falcons   The Browns are close to being 3-0 as well had they not melted down late against the Jets in Week 2. They will go into Atlanta well rested and likely some traveling support from the Dawg Pound. When Nick Chubb goes back down to Georgia, the Falcons' run defense can prepared to get gashed. The Falcons simply don't have the power and pop to match with the Browns can do on either of the ball even with Marcus Mariota joining Jacoby Brissett and playing better than expected overall at QB. Pick: Browns win 23-20 and cover the spread. Commanders at Cowboys (-3, 42.5 o/u)   The Commanders are an absolute defensive mess under Ron Rivera and Jack Del Rio. They cannot stop anything vs. the run or pass and are very undisciplined in giving up big plays. The Cowboys are methodical and creative offensively without Dak Prescott, as Cooper Rush and the running game are set up well to produce here. Then Micah Parsons and Dallas' defense will take care of the rest by taking it to Carson Wentz. Pick: Cowboys win 20-14. Seahawks at Lions (-6, 50 o/u)   The Seahawks can stay in this game with Geno Smith throwing to their wide receivers given issues in Detroit's secondary. But that will happen for only a while as Jared Goff and his weapons will see wide-open spaces in coverage and the Lions have proved they can pound the ball and run well on anyone. Pick: Lions win 31-23 and cover the spread.  Titans at Colts (-3, 42.5 o/u)   Derrick Henry got on track for the Titans last week to earn them their first win. Jonathan Taylor has been contained for a couple games but the Colts were able to get a big win without him going off in Week 2. The Titans are crumbling a bit up front in their offense and are inconsistent with their wide receivers, a break for the Colts' new-look defense. This is meant to be a Taylor-dominated game and he will let Indy ride him to victory. Pick: Colts win 24-20 and cover the spread. Bears at Giants (-3.5, 39 o/u)   Justin Fields and Daniel Jones are bound to give us the ugliest game of the week as these two new coaches, Matt Eberflus and Brian Daboll try to grind out another win with the defense and running game. Using that method, someone needs to come out on top, barring a low-scoring tie. Side with the Giants having the slightly better formula with Jones supported by Saquon Barkley and a capable of making better dual-threat plays than Fields at home. Pick: Giants win 16-13 but fail to cover the spread. Jaguars at Eagles (-6.5, 48.5 o/u)   Doug Pederson will try to fare better in his revenge game vs. Philadelphia than Carson Wentz did. Pederson has his offense looking complete with Trevor Lawrence, Christian Kirk, James Robinson and others. This is a good defensive challenge for the Jaguars but they will have some success moving the ball with a dynamic and diverse attack. The Jaguars' defense is seeing some young players stand out early, but there are still enough issues to struggle on the road with the Eagles' balance and explosiveness led by a red-hot Jalen Hurts. Pick: Eagles win 34-27 and cover the spread.  Jets at Steelers (-3.5, 41.5 o/u)   It looks like the Steelers won't get one more shot at old Ravens rival Joe Flacco as Zach Wilson is expected to return and start for New York. The Steelers insist on sticking with Mitchell Trubisky over rookie Kenny Pickett, which gives them the veteran edge, even though a Wilson-Pickett matchup would give this game more of a young QB groove. The Steelers will keep things simple with a rebound outing for the T.J. Watt-less defense and running game to avoid the upset at home. Pick: Steelers win 23-17 and cover the spread. Chargers (-6, 45.5 o/u) at Texans   The Chargers seemed out of sorts with Justin Herbert not fully healthy against the Jaguars. They were playing without Keenan Allen again and also lost left tackle Rashawn Slater and edge rusher Joey Bosa. The injury curse might be back to give them powder blues, but this screams get-well game on the road for Herbert and all of his weapons, namely Austin Ekeler. Davis Mills is fading hard as Houston's starting QB and Los Angeles' defense will be motivated for a strong effort vs. the pass. Pick: Chargers win 34-14 and cover the spread. Cardinals at Panthers (-1.5, 44 o/u)   Kyler Murray and Baker Mayfield both won Heisman Trophies playing quarterback for Oklahoma and also went No. 1 overall in their respective NFL Drafts. Unfortunately, neither QB is playing up to the team expectations, Murray vs. his massive new contract and Mayfield vs. his supposed savior status.   Murray needs to take offensive matters more into his own hands or Arizona is in danger of freefall out of playoff contention, The defense has started to play better and it's time for him to respond and here he should get plenty of support from James Conner and the traditional running game. The Panthers' offensive woes around Mayfield continue, including not knowing how to use his weapons well. Pick: Cardinals win 24-14. Broncos at Raiders (-2, 44 o/u)   The Broncos and Raiders are breaking in new offensive-minded coaches, Nathaniel Hackett and Josh McDaniels. Russell Wilson and Derek Carr have been slow to adapt and deliver in the new systems, despite having ample receiving weaponry. The play-calling isn't in sync for either QB, but Las Vegas has shown more signs of things coming together soon. Denver's defense has overachieved early and will come down to earth on the road. Desperation kicks in for Carr and the feisty Raiders and they get the win to get them back in a suddenly underachieving AFC West. Pick: Raiders win 23-20 and cover the spread. Rams at 49ers (-2.5, 45 o/u)   The Rams and 49ers are getting shaky quarterback play as Matthew Stafford is coming off a right elbow injury and Jimmy Garoppolo is operating post right shoulder surgery. This should be a typical, grinding, close physical game between the two NFC West archrivals that plays out much like their final two big meetings of 2022, including the NFC title game. Give the edge to the 49ers for better overall defense and a more reliable running game at home tied to the strong recent history of Kyle Shanahan vs. Sean McVay. Pick: 49ers win 20-17. Stats of the Week Week 3 record straight up: 10-6 Week 3 record against the spread: 9-7 Season record straight up: 28-19 Season record against the spread: 24-24

Despite what Joc Pederson said, finishing .500 or better should be an important goal for the San Francisco Giants. Pederson's comments sound like they're coming from someone who's not invested in the future of this team. It's hard to blame Pederson, considering he's about to reach free agency again, but Mike Yastrzemski said on the Giants' postgame show that finishing well as a team was important. The SF Giants only have to go 4-3 to finish at .500 or better thanks to this great stretch in which they've won eight of nine. The Giants' new-look bullpen continues to impress. Shelby Miller has struck out 12 of the 18 hitters he's faced with the San Francisco Giants, and he hasn't walked a batter or given up any runs. His FIP is under minus-2. Miller, Scott Alexander, and Alex Young have been strong additions to the bullpen in the month of September. John Brebbia had another successful open yesterday, and he is under club control for one more year. Sean Hjelle did a nice job in a bulk role last night, overcoming a shaky beginning to end up with a strong performance for the Giants. Getting to a mailbag question, how are the Giants going to improve their offense if only a handful of players won't be back next year? It seems that there are more players likely to be replaced than the listener realizes, and also the Giants are starting from a decent place. The SF Giants' offense is not nearly as bad as a lot of people seem to think. They've been average, or even a tick above, by most important measurements, whether it's wRC+ or simply runs scored per game. If the Giants are average now, adding one or two truly impact bats could push them to a point of being a firmly above-average offense in 2023. San Francisco Giants outfielder Joc Pederson sounds like he wants out. His postgame comments after the Giants' win last night—their seventh in eight games—made it sound like he's already halfway out the door. Pederson described the Giants' inevitable elimination from playoff contention as “not fun,” and said of his time with the Giants, “I'm glad that I got to be a part of it for a year.” Someone who doesn't have a choice in the matter is J.D. Davis. The SF Giants acquired Davis at this year's trading deadline, and all he's done is hit. Davis had three more hits and another home run last night, and he is under club control for two more seasons. His strong play over the last few weeks has all but cemented his role on next year's team. Meanwhile, unfortunately, it's been a miserable tenure in New York so far for Darin Ruf. The Giants also got three compelling young pitchers in the trade, which is looking more lopsided by the day. Major League Baseball's website says that the Giants have been eliminated from playoff contention—but have they? The answer is no, but that hasn't stopped major media outlets like Fox Sports from tweeting out that the SF Giants have officially been eliminated. It's rather infuriating that a primary source like MLB.com is featuring incorrect information. It won't ultimately matter for the Giants, who face nearly impossible odds, but it's just imperative that MLB's standings page not make such blatant errors. The San Francisco Giants are just about eliminated, but that doesn't mean this last week and a half is meaningless. Far from it, actually. Several key members of the SF Giants, like Evan Longoria, Mike Yastrzemski, LaMonte Wade Jr., Joc Pederson, Carlos Rodón, and others are playing for meaningful personal goals. Longoria wants the Giants to pick up his $13 million club option that has a $5 million buyout, effectively making it an $8 million decision. He delivered a clutch two-run single that made the difference for the Giants in Sunday's series-clinching win over the D-Backs. Yastrzemski was a possible non-tender candidate, but a strong week seems to have secured his spot on next year's roster. Wade is another non-tender candidate and hasn't been able to get it going with the bat all year. Time is running out to make a strong final impression. Rodón is playing for a $100M+ contract. His main goal should just be to stay healthy over his final two starts. Will the Giants be the one to give him the big contract he's in line to receive? The answer is unclear. Pederson is also playing for his next contract, although his absence from Sunday's lineup was noteworthy and he won't receive anything close to what Rodón gets on the open market. Pederson seems like he may be back next year, but it's an open question. Some other arb-eligibles playing for a spot on next year's team: Jakob Junis, who rebounded from a rough stretch with 5.1 strong innings in Sunday's win. He seems to have a spot locked up for next year. Luis González was also playing for a spot on next year's San Francisco Giants squad. He's cooled way off after a hot start, but has still been overall solid against righties. He'll be out of options next year, so it's not entirely certain what the Giants will do with him in the offseason. He could be a non-tender candidate, or he could be traded, or he could be back next year. It's hard to see him and Wade (and Yastrzemski) all being back. Two of those three at most seems most likely. Lastly, Giants third base prospect Casey Schmitt was promoted to Triple-A. It's been a great season for Schmitt, one of the Giants' top prospects, who should enter 2023 in Sacramento and will be right on the cusp of the major leagues. ‘Cancel Culture' is a hot button topic, and too often it assumes redemption is impossible. Today's focus text tells the story of God using a seemingly unredeemable persecutor of the disciples to do great things. Saul was literally hunting down the followers of Jesus when he has an encounter with Jesus that changes his course. The disciple Ananias despises Saul for all the pain caused to his fellow members of The Way, but his trust in God's plan was stronger than his hate for those who were persecuting him. While we may not be so willing to offer second chances to those who have wronged us, God is willing to forgive us and will use us to do great things in the world that bring about God's vision for Creation. In the Momentum of this Story we can find “Believable Belonging” trusting that even as God knows all our failings we are not cancelled but renewed & redeemed as Children of God.

Love bacon? But you don't want to feed it to your kids because it's processed, it's got nitrite, and it's unhealthy. Well, you and your kids can actually eat all the bacon you want. You just have to make sure you know where you're getting it from. Out of all the meat out there, it seems that pork has been the slowest to come around when it comes to ideal practices and humane stewardship. But Pederson's Natural Farms has been doing this for a very long time. In fact, they're the first to make no-sugar bacon available nationwide.  In today's episode, Neil Dudley, vice president of Pederson's Natural Farms, joins us to talk about raising humane pork. He gives us a word picture of how they raise pigs at Pederson's Natural Farms. Additionally, we talk about organic – what that means for pigs and pork, and why it's important to vote with your dollar. At the end of the day, your nutrition is a key building block of your health and happiness. It affects every aspect of your life so it's time we all reevaluate the food that we bring to the table. In this episode, you will hear: The history of Pederson's Natural Farms What makes Pederson's products different from traditional processed meat A tangible picture of humanely raised pigs Maintaining the biosecurity of farrowing farms Sourcing meat from other local farmers Organic vs. non-organic products Why you can't totally eliminate nitrite from bacon Subscribe and Review Have you subscribed to our podcast? In today's episode, we catch up with Dr. Josh Pederson, an Associate Professor of Communication Studies within the College of Communication and Information Sciences at the University of Alabama. Like most kids, young Josh had early aspirations to be a professional baseball player or a police officer--he knew that he liked working with people, and like many young kids, he realized that making it as a pro in baseball might not pan out. As an undergrad, he found himself seeking out programs and colleges that offered courses in communication because he had been on his high school's competitive speech team and he loved that environment. This all led to finding his way to graduate school and finding his way into the position he has now where he studies interpersonal and relational communication. But, what Josh really studies is the ways we communicate with one another in interpersonal settings when there may be a conflict or stressor--whether it be a parent/child relationship, a partner relationship, or a friendship. He tries to better understand how we overcome things through interpersonal communication and relationships when we are sad, angry, or dealing with a stressor. He highly recommends The Office for the best thing to watch on television, and as you'll hear, he's already got the reality television show he'd like to be on picked out--you'll have to turn in to hear his answer! San Francisco Giants outfielder Joc Pederson has reportedly been taking ground balls at first base—but why? Brandon Belt is under contract for 2022 but then is set to reach free agency. It's been a disappointing season for Belt, who has dealt with injuries and generally been a non-factor at the plate. Pederson has been good in his platoon role, but isn't a great defender in the outfield. It's certainly possible that Belt could see more time at DH, Pederson could play first, and an outfielder could be added to the roster. Heliot Ramos, perhaps not coincidentally, will reportedly be in Colorado on the taxi squad. Does that mean he's getting called up? Should the SF Giants start playing their younger players more. The Giants have numerous struggling veterans, including Belt, but perhaps most obviously Tommy La Stella, who's been a net negative to the Giants this season. He can't really play the field or run, and hasn't even been able to hit well even though he's mostly the designated hitter. Could his time with the Giants be coming to an end? Is there anything to look forward to next season or is it all doom and gloom? Even though this season has been disappointing for the Giants and their best player in Carlos Rodón is likely not going to be back next year, there is reason for hope in 2023. Logan Webb, Joey Bart, Thairo Estrada, and Camilo Doval look like core pieces moving forward, and their prospects are a year closer to the majors. Kyle Harrison looks like a potential future ace, and Marco Luciano is finally back from his back injury. We should see those guys in the majors in the next year or two. The floor on the Jaguars in 2022 has been raised dramatically from 2021. The changes and roster creation in the offseason has compeltely changed the avergae outlook on this team...despite the market favoring them in just two games.  2. The toxic environment, lack of leadership and botched play calling of the Urban Meyer regieme set Trevor Lawrence and this Jaguars team up to fail from the start. To make matters worse, the RB/WR room in 2021 was the third most injured.  3. If we believe the Lawrence talent level is still the same as it was widely accepted to be coming out of college, the surrounding skill players, coaching change and offensive scheme adjustments should all benefit this team in a positive way.  4. Some previews may look at the roster construction strategy as a negative, but there is precedent for success from spending for Pederson, who burned the entire Eagles cap in the offseason leading up to the 2017-18 Super Bowl victory. If we trust Pederson and his talent judgement, the additions are almost all positive across the board.  5. The Jaguars in many ways are a play on or a buy team for me on a week to week basis in 2022. Better coaching, better skill position players, a QB in a much better spot to succeed and a much easier schedule of opponents on both sides of the ball.

The San Francisco Giants may very well be sellers. Their awful performance coming out of the All-Star break has the Giants two games below .500 and 3.5 games out of the third and final Wild Card position. If the SF Giants sell, Carlos Rodón figures to be their best trade chip and one of the top players available at the deadline. What exactly could the Giants get for Rodón? While he is very good and could help a team win a title, he is likely just a two-month rental, and returns for rentals tend to be limited. The Giants would likely need to be overwhelmed in order to move him, considering they'd essentially be giving up on their season and they can give him the qualifying offer and get draft pick compensation if he leaves. So the Giants do have some leverage in this situation. Joc Pederson would be another target of other teams, but the return for him would be far less significant. Pederson has generally been a disappointment in San Francisco after a hot start. He's limited defensively and on the bases, and can only hit right-handed pitching. Other questions addressed in today's mailbag: Is Giants ownership responsible for the team's relative lack of spending? If the Giants do buy, would Ian Happ make sense? How can the Giants stay competitive if they keep "cheaping out" on pitching? Are we sleeping on Trea Turner as a possible free-agent signing this offseason? Might the Giants target Joey Gallo if they fail to sign Aaron Judge? Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:
