This week Isabela sits down with Dr. Cathy Pederson, a Professor of Biology at Wittenberg University and founder of Standing Up To POTS, a non-profit working to improve the quality of life for people living with POTS. Standing Up to POTS was founded by Dr. Cathy Pederson in 2014 after her daughter was diagnosed with POTS. Standing Up to POTS was created to generate a community who can support each other while pushing forward understanding of POTS. Dr. Pederson earned her Ph.D. in Physiology and Neurobiology from Rutgers in 1996, and has dedicated all of her professional research efforts to POTS, chronic illness, and quality of life since her daughter's illness. In this episode, Cathy and Isabela share the basics of what POTS is, how it's impacted Isabela's life over the last decade, and the two main symptoms that make life hard for Isabela. They also discuss how the pandemic brought hope to the POTS community and offer insight into how we can advocate for those with chronic, invisible illnesses. What's stopping you? In the case of our focus text this week: EVERYTHING! When the Ethiopian eunuch asked to be baptized by Philip, everything said the answer was a clear “No!” Generations of tradition and teaching said that the eunuch could not be made part of the community of faith. He was a foreigner, he was not “a whole man,” both of which would have excluded him from worship in the Jewish Temple. But Philip had experienced the way Jesus was constantly welcoming the outsider into his community of followers. When the world told Philip everything was standing the way, Jesus showed him that nothing should stop him! Today when the world tells us there is every reason not to welcome the stranger God shows us the compassion, love and mercy that welcomes us all!
Who else better to play Cecilia Pederson in SAW X? Synnøve Macody Lund is such an amazing actress and it's no wonder she was chosen to play the villain in the newest installment of the SAW Franchise. What I am really impressed with is that she didn't even have to audition for the role of Cecilia! I was astonished with her answers to my questions because of the integral possibilities of the movie itself. And she is a phenomenal actress, published author, and director. I am completely honored that I had the opportunity to speak to her, this interview will definitely not be forgotten. Unfortunately, she could not speak of any upcoming movies or projects. However, you can follow her on Instagram (she posted some very cool behind the scenes pictures from the set of SAW X). Make sure to give her a follow and continue to praise her work! --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/southjerseyhorror/message

Since the beginning threats of God's wrath have been used to instill fear in others. Fear allows those in power to control others and further solidify their power. When religion abuses this fear it takes away our ability to explore, search, ask questions, grow, and become what God actually intends for us. Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount encourages his followers to ask God and seek out the good things of life together. Bad parents use fear to control their children and maintain their own power, good parents encourage kids to explore, to ask questions, to take risks so that they can grow into their best versions of themselves. God, Jesus says, is so much better than a good parent. As we celebrate with the youth affirming the promises of their Baptism in the Confirmation Service on Sunday, Pastor Chad reminds us that faith formation at Bethlehem is not about using fear to get kids to adhere to rigid set of rules & expectations or scoring points on a test but rather it is about living out Jesus' call to seek and ask and knock knowing that with God, the ultimate parent, we can find and receive and enter.
Death is scary. Last week Pastor Stephanie introduced us to the Hallowtide, the Triduum for the Dead, as we explored All Hallows' Eve (Halloween) and the Reformation. This week we explore the next day in the Hallowtide, All Saints' Day. While in history it was a day to remember the proclaimed Saints (like the Apostles), in the Lutheran Church we remember that we are all claimed by God in baptism to be saints. On All Saints' we honor both those who have been baptized and those who have died in the last year. We also use the day as a reminder that even though death is scary, Jesus proclaimed, “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.” One way we find comfort is by facing our grief which can be made easier by incorporating a ritual like lighting a candle. That little light is a reminder that Jesus is the Light of the World and one day he will “wipe every tear from their eyes.”
What does Halloween have to do with Martin Lutheran and the Reformation? More than you might realize! Pastor Stephanie explains the connection between the two as she looks at the role shame played in Martin Luther's early understanding of faith and how that changed after reading Romans helped him understand Grace. God offers us salvation just as we are, even when we feel like wearing a crown and carrying a lightsaber!
Former top lever Canadian pro motocross racer Serge Gregoire talks with us at the 2023 Vet and Vintage event at Gopher Dunes. Gregoire Sport and Yamaha Motor Canada put together a 2024 Yamaha YZ450F to look like Ross "Rollerball" Pederson's 1986 championship bike and hit the track.
Ross "Rollerball" Pederson is the 42-43 time Canadian Motocross champion who dominated the sport like no other has before or since his reign in the 1980's and early 90's. He was the guest of honour at the 2023 Vet and Vintage Motocross event at Gopher Dunes on October 20-21 and we grabbed him for an interview at the end of the day that saw him throw a leg over a bike with several other Legends of Canadian MX.
“I am just average, I won't change the world.” Faced with the issues of the world we often see ourselves as too little, too insignificant to make a difference. But God knows otherwise! In our focus text Jesus tells his followers they are light. Our little lights shine through the darkness. Pastor Chad invites us to consider our identity from God's perspective: “I am _____”. Over and over again, Jesus compares us to little things that make a big difference: light, salt, yeast, mustard seeds. Even when we feel small, God knows we are making a big difference in our world!
Sometimes when we get lost in a fog, literal or metaphorical, the world passes us by unnoticed. In our focus text this week, two of Jesus' followers are in a fog of grief after the Crucifixion and a fog of disbelief regarding the rumors of the Resurrection. They are so lost they don't believe the man they met as he reveals the truth about the Resurrection, about HIS Resurrection! Even in their lost disbelief Jesus continues to accompany them which is good news for us: even when we are lost in a fog, God is with us and is sending in others to help us see clearly once the fog has lifted.

Buffalo Narrows is located in northern Saskatchewan, around 275 miles north of Saskatoon, Canada. 32-year-old Thomas Pederson and his wife, Bernadette, resided in the settlement with their children, Grace, Robert, Fred, Connie, Richard, Rhoda and Cynthia. The Pederson family were Metis Nation, meaning that they were of mixed European and Indigenous ancestry. In 1969, Buffalo Narrows was predominantly a community of Indigenous people of the Cree Nation and the population was approximately 700. The 30th of January 1969 was bitterly cold, with heavy snow blanketing Buffalo Narrows. 48-year-old Jean Baptiste Herman, from the village of La Loche, stayed at the Pederson home as a guest and two of the Pederson's daughters, Cynthia and Connie, were absent, staying over with their grandmother that night. Sometime after 03:40am, Corporal Jack Fraser was awakened by Reverend Andrew Darsche who seemed shaken. A man had called him minutes earlier and confessed to having murdered those in the Pederson home with an axe. Guest Dave Pederson is the producer of a new film, “Americonned,” that examines how the past few generations of workers have suffered from income inequality and been crushed by big business and its government influence. Wages aren't keeping up, yet productivity has rocketed, on the backs of the American middle class. The rich are getting richer, the middle class is seeing the bottom drop out. Why? And what do seismic shifts in wealth mean for the future of the middle class, unions, and the lawyers who represent them? Organized labor and a strong middle class have been the drivers of Workers' Comp protections. Without them, we may need to worry about the future. But as Pederson explains, a renewed interest in union membership and strength could be the turning point for workplace protections. In tht series kick off, we'll receive the truths of the Hebrews sermon as we fix our eyes on Jesus, the ultimate priest and sacrifice who is God's better and final word, and brings ultimate rest. And, we'll receive the exhortation of the Hebrews sermon to mature in our faith (cf. Heb. 5:12-14) which is not blind but informed — based on the foretold, encountered, and eternal truths of Jesus and the Kingdom. Faith sits at the fulcrum of remembering and foreshadowing as what's known from the past and hoped of the future is brought into the present. God's purposes and presence transcends time in Jesus and, by faith, in us"

And at the core of the great promise that ends Psalm 23 is a very interesting word. The Hebrew word translated as “follow” is used more than 150 times in the Old Testament. Most commonly, it's translated as “pursued,” or “chased,” or “hunted,” because it's most often used to refer to being hunted or chased by an animal. And so the image is more intense that what we might ordinarily think of when we hear the word “follow.” David's image is of God pursuing us. Chasing us. Hunting us. And beautifully, it's God's goodness and love that are relentlessly and inexhaustibly chasing us. The journey that David has been charting for us culminates in the house of the Lord, which in the Old Testament, refers to the place where God dwells among his people– which in the wilderness was the tabernacle, and then later, the Temple. But it's representative of God's presence. God's goodness and love chase us down and return us to his presence, which, every time we come to it, comforts us and gives us hope.

Eric, Willie, and Chad review the last week in Giants' baseball, and they are HOT and in the hunt. Now 3 games over .500 and holding a wild card spot, the Giants are poised to make a run at the postseason. The bad news is that Mitch Haniger will be out for a couple of months with a broken right forearm, and moments before he was hit by a pitch, J.D. Davis went out with a sprained ankle. The silver lining is the call up of phenom Luis Matos, who made his MLB debut today in St. Louis by lining a single in his first AB. He's the youngest Giant to make his debut since Madison Bumgarner. Keaton Winn made his MLB debut in St. Louis with a 4-inning save, but what's odd is that was the first MLB park he ever set foot in. Should Crawford be the new set up man? Speaking of hot, Pederson is hitting .480 over the past week plus, Doval is a perfect 14/14 in saves, Taylor Rogers has allowed only 1 ER in his last 18.2 IP, and his twin brother Tyler is down to a 1.71 ERA. We also chat about what Joey Bart's future is after being demoted to AAA. Barring injury or a trade, we all agree that he may stay there for the year.www.torturecast.comwww.facebook.com/torturecast@torturecast
Last week, Multnomah county commissioners approved a $3.5 billion budget for the next fiscal year. County chair Jessica Vega Pederson joins us to discuss the role that the county will play in addressing homelessness, behavioral health, and other challenges facing the region.
