The Resilient Recruiter
How Hiring the Right Marketing Person Doubled My Revenue in Two Years, with Justis Pederson

The Resilient Recruiter

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 18, 2025 59:38

What if you could swap 100 cold calls a day for content that reaches thousands? In this episode, Justis shares how going digital didn't just scale his reach, it nearly doubled his revenue. Justis Pederson is an award-winning recruiter and the CEO of the Pederson Group of Companies in Winnipeg, which he has grown from $500K to $1.8M in revenue. His group of companies includes recruitment, media, and real estate. On the recruitment side, they specialize in construction & engineering. I'm excited to learn that Justis complements his recruiting business with his media business. They have turned video production into a differentiator, specifically leveraging video and digital marketing as a key differentiator. Justis serves on two boards and is a member of the Pinnacle Society, a collective of the top-performing recruiters in North America. Episode Outline and Highlights [02:57] How Justis got into recruiting - from door-to-door salesman to becoming a top recruiter in construction. [11:33] Justis' insights on critical attributes that differentiate a great recruiter. [13:19] The story of how they shifted from mainly cold calling to primarily digital marketing. [26:10] The ROI of hiring an effective marketing person. [31:22] The three pillars of content. [34:55] The hiring process of a good marketing person. [37:39] Strategies and systems to start posting content. [43:18] Discussion on the hows and whys of building a brand. [47:30] Shifting to a retained business model. [51:38] How to get business ‘without asking for business'. [53:02] Justis shares his personal story of resilience. Shifting from Cold Calling to Digital Marketing If your primary source of leads is through cold-calling, would you consider shifting to digital marketing? Justis realized the benefits of doing so, as cold-calling usually limits him to reaching 100 people a day, but with digital content, he can demonstrate their subject matter expertise to thousands. “So we started posting content online. And instead of going from one to one cold calling, it's one to many: one to 1,000, one to 10,000, one to 20,000 plus people. So what you're doing is you're actually just demonstrating what your subject matter expertise is. Instead of on the phone to people that already know you, you're doing it online to a larger population of people that do not know you.” How did they transition from pure cold calling to digital marketing? When Justis first started at Hayes and later running his own recruitment business, it was all about cold calling. But like a lot of recruiters, he hit that point of burnout. You can only hear “no” so many times before you start asking, Is there a better way to do this? They began putting their expertise online, mainly on LinkedIn, aiming to reach not just dozens, but thousands. Then came the big move: hiring Cass in 2022 as their first team member, not another recruiter, but a full-time content and social media manager. Instead of hiring another 360 recruiter, Justis placed his bet on the potential of digital marketing. Eventually, it paid off. They started producing all kinds of content—videos, thought pieces, scroll-stopping visuals—all tailored to their niche in construction and real estate. And people started paying attention—not just candidates but clients, too. Inbound leads started rolling in. The ROI of Hiring an Effective Marketing Person Was there a return on investment from the step that Justis took? That is, focusing mainly on being top-of-mind via digital content? There was! “To quantify that, when I first hired Cass in our first year, we did about, I think it was about $500,000… And in our second year after hiring Cass, we did closer to a million. So, just simple numbers there. Like, we almost doubled our billings.” Justis, however, reminded us that hiring an effective marketing person is not an instant result-generating move. You also have to invest time, like what she did with Cass. He spent at least a year working with her, and it took almost two years to see actual results. “But it did take like a lot of time to get there. Mark, I don't want your listeners to think like, oh, you hire a marketing person and 30 days later you're going to be getting all these inbound leads, because that's not how it works. And a lot of people are wired to think, you know, 30, 60, 90-day return. But this was something that happened for two years. Not 30 or 60, 90 days. Like when I hired Cas, the idea was, okay, we'll give it a year and see how it does.” The Three Pillars of Content and How to Start For Justis, there are three pillars of a well-curated, quality content: Graphic Design Video Writing Justis elaborated on these three pillars and how they emphasized the importance of writing as the basis of videos and graphic designs. He also shared strategies on posting at least 4 pieces of content a week, and why spreading too thin on different social media platforms may not always work. He also shared that to start and build a brand, you don't even need a high budget. Justis shared, “But I think what I would say is it doesn't have to be an extremely high-budget effort. Like you can do this with a low budget effort.” Justis Pederson Bio and Contact Info Justis is an award-winning recruiter as well as President & CEO of the Pederson Group of Companies. His group of companies includes recruitment, media, and real estate. The Pederson Group recruitment specializes in a very niche market - construction & engineering. Outside of running the day-to-day operations of the businesses, Justis sits on two boards and is a member of the Pinnacle Society. He encourages us to see the opposing Kingdoms revealed in the story: the Kingdom of Caesar, based in fear, violence, and oppression; versus the Kingdom of God, based in love, mercy, and compassion.

Imagine you had a mirror that reflected not just your image but every part of you: all that you've done, every flaw, your character, your accomplishments and your failures. How would shape your interactions and your faith? In our Focus Text this week the criminals crucified with Jesus react in two different ways. One joins the crowd in mocking Jesus as a way of distracting from his own condemnation. The other recognizes his faults and justly deserved death sentence, while also seeing that Jesus was wrongfully convicted and his willingness to sacrifice himself for the sake of everyone, even those who are mocking him. The criminal boldly asks Jesus not to save him from his deserved punishment but to simply remember him in the Kingdom beyond death. As we near the end of Lent and prepare for Holy Week and Easter Pastor Stephanie encourages us to look into the mirror and see that we don't deserve God's forgiveness but also see God's love reflected in the undeserved gift of grace.

Our stories have taught us what a ‘bad guy' is. Usually it is someone who is on the outside, someone who is different, someone who doesn't look or act like us. We teach our community about the ‘bad guy' in hopes of protecting us from threats. In this week's Focus Text the Scribes and Pharisees bring a woman caught in adultery to Jesus in hopes that he will agree that she is a ‘bad guy' that deserves to be thrown out like something broken. Jesus instead asks the leaders to look in the mirror and realize that the reflection is also a ‘bad guy' just as deserving of punishment but also receiving God's love, grace, and mercy.

Why should we pray for forgive who have wronged us? Why should we listen to those who hurt us? Because Jesus calls us to treat others the way we want to be treated. We should forgive because we want to be forgiven. We should listen because we want to be listened to. On the Cross Jesus sets the example praying that those who crucified him would be forgiven "for they know not what they do" and that prayer applies to us when we so often do not know what we are doing when our words and actions hurt others.

True strength is not always found in grand gestures but in the quiet persistence of kindness, in the humility of service, in the grace of listening. Music Sunday selections —Haydn's “Little Organ Mass, Missa brevis sancti Joannis de Deo” and Pederson's “Choose Love”—remind us that small acts are actually transformative. In being little, we find the space to be fully present and to engage with each other without anxiety, pretension, or fear. About our Lead Minister: Rev. Marta Flanagan began her ministry as our twentieth called minister at First Parish in the fall of 2009. She is a genuine and forthright preacher. In conversation she is direct and engaging. She speaks of prayer with as much ease as she laughs at human foibles. We call her “Marta.” Marta is a religious liberal, a theist, a feminist, and a lover of the woods. As a student of American history at Smith College she was captivated by the stories of social reformers who were motivated and sustained by their faith. That led her to consider the ministry and to study at Harvard Divinity School from where she was graduated in 1986. She was the first woman minister in the city of Salem, Massachusetts, serving at the First Universalist Church there (1987-1997). She served in a co-ministry at South Church (Unitarian Universalist) in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, (1997-2005) from where she is minister emerita. Marta served as interim minister in Montpelier, Vermont (2008-2009). She is trained as a spiritual director. For three years she lived in the Vermont woods practicing voluntary simplicity and the spiritual life. Marta enjoys the vitality of First Parish and our strong sense of community. She celebrates the yearning for depth and the desire to make a difference in the world that she finds here.

Fantasy Baseball Live – December 29, 2024Segment 1 – News and Notes1.The Nationals acquired Nathanial Lowe from the Rangers for LHP Robert Garcia. The Rangers then signed Joc Pederson to a 2-year, $37 million contract with an opt-out after the first yeara.First, what did you think of the Nationals' move? Lowe wasn't very good last season but was fairly consistent prior to that.i.For those thinking that Andres Chaparro would get a chance, that appears to not be in the cards.b.The move allows the Rangers to move Jake Burger full-time to first and then park Pederson as the strong-side platoon DH. What do you think of the Rangers lineup?c.Does Robert Garcia get a boost in value with the chance to be the closer in Texas? Or was he your favorite in Washington for saves?2.The Diamondbacks signed Corbin Burnes for 6-years and 210 million.a.Burnes is on a four-year decline in his strikeout rate and only struck out 8.4 per nine last season. Plus, after a stellar first half, he posted a 3.69 ERA in the second half. Are you all in with Burnes in 2025, or do you have some reservations?i.Is he worth an early third-round pick (6th starter off the board)?ii.Are you particularly concerned about his move to the NL West and Arizona?3.The Dodgers re-signed Teoscar Hernandez for three years and $66 million with $23 million deferred. Jeff Passan said it best…the Dodgers are a machine. They get who they want. What do you think?4.The Red Sox signed Walker Buehler to a one-year, $21.05 million contract. He's coming off this second TJS and struggled in 16 starts for the Dodgers last season. He posted a 5.38 ERA, striking out 7.7 per nine.a.Stat line for 2025: IP, K, wins, and ERA5.The Tigers do things that I don't understand. They signed Javier Baez to a huge contract a few years back, and it will turn out to be one of the worst deals in the modern era. Now, they have signed Gleybar Torres to a one-year deal ($15 million). I know people say there are no bad one-year deals, but it clogs up an already full infield. a.Give me the starters in the infield and lose out on playing time.Segment 2 – NL West Fantasy Questions1.Arizona Diamondbacksa.Corbin Carroll will be more like the 2024 first-half player or the 2024 second-half player in 2025?i.Stat line for 2025: HR, SB, and BAb.Jordan Lawlar will take over the shortstop role of ______________ (looking for a date)?c.Is Alek Thomas nothing more than a fourth outfielder or do you think he can develop into something more?d.Justin Martinez had a nice run of closing games in August but didn't save a game after September 3. He went 23-30 with a .260 batting average. Give me his stat line for 2025: HR, SB, and BAi.We will see where he is going and if it seems reasonable.b.Nolan Jones cost you a fourth-round pick in 2024. After injuries and poor playing when he was healthy, he will only cost you a 17th-round pick. Am I nuts to think there could be sneaky value here?c.One of your guys last season was Ezequiel Tovar. Welcome to Episode 49 of TableSetters! Devin and Steve are back with all the latest MLB offseason news, from the loss of one of the game's greatest players to significant trades and signings that are shaping the 2025 season. We begin by honoring the life and career of Rickey Henderson, the all-time stolen base king, who tragically passed away at the age of 65. Remembered for his incredible speed, plate discipline, and impact on the game, Henderson leaves behind a legacy that will never be forgotten. His longtime friend and teammate Dave Winfield confirmed the news, and we reflect on Rickey's unparalleled contribution to the sport, from his historic career with the Athletics, Blue Jays, and others, to his iconic postseason moments. Turning our attention to the offseason, the Red Sox have made a big move, signing Walker Buehler to a one-year, $21.05 million contract. Buehler, whose career has been on a rollercoaster ride since undergoing Tommy John surgery, showed signs of his former dominance during the 2024 postseason, including 10 scoreless innings. If he can return to full form, he could be a game-changer for the Red Sox, who are still looking to add more pieces for their 2025 roster. Meanwhile, the Rangers have strengthened their lineup by signing Joc Pederson to a two-year, $37 million deal. Pederson's left-handed power was a much-needed addition, addressing the team's hole at designated hitter. With their recent additions, including Jake Burger and Kyle Higashioka, the Rangers are aiming for a more potent offense to complement their pitching staff. The Astros also made a significant move, signing Christian Walker to a three-year, $60 million contract. With first base an area of concern after a lackluster 2024 campaign from Jose Abreu and Jon Singleton, Walker brings defensive prowess and consistent offensive production. His arrival signals the Astros' continued commitment to staying competitive as their payroll surpasses the luxury tax threshold for the second consecutive year. Elsewhere, the Phillies have bolstered their pitching staff by acquiring Jesús Luzardo from the Marlins in exchange for top prospects. Luzardo, now slotted as the No. 2 starter behind Zack Wheeler, adds much-needed depth to a Phillies rotation that's hoping to contend for another postseason berth. Meanwhile, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is reportedly seeking a record-breaking contract extension from the Blue Jays, turning down their current $340 million offer in favor of a deal closer to the $500-$600 million range. This will undoubtedly be one of the offseason's biggest storylines as the Jays are under increasing pressure to meet his demands or risk losing their superstar in the near future. As the offseason heats up, one of the most exciting international stories is Roki Sasaki, the Japanese pitching sensation drawing significant interest from MLB teams. Known for his perfect game in 2022 and his dominance in NPB, Sasaki is poised to make a big impact once he makes his MLB debut, and teams like the Rangers, Giants, Yankees, and Mets are all in the mix for his services. The Marlins are continuing their rebuild, focusing on player development and long-term sustainability. With moves like trading Luzardo to the Phillies, they're looking to build a future that prioritizes young talent and a more stable payroll structure. In other news, the Rays have taken a low-risk gamble by signing Eloy Jimenez to a minor league deal. Despite his struggles in 2024, Jimenez's potential bat could give the Rays an added offensive boost if he returns to form in 2025. We also take a look at the luxury tax picture, with nine MLB teams exceeding the $237 million threshold in 2024. This includes the Dodgers, Mets, and Yankees, who will face draft pick penalties and other financial consequences as a result. We break down what this means for the landscape of the offseason and how it could impact these teams' future moves. Finally, we turn our attention to the Mets, who have been extremely active this offseason. After signing Juan Soto, the Mets are looking to further solidify their roster, with a potential trade for Pete Alonso still on the table. Their pitching staff has also seen some changes, with new additions like Sean Manaea, Frankie Montas, and Clay Holmes strengthening their rotation for 2025. Stay tuned for more offseason updates, predictions, and insights you won't hear anywhere else. Don't forget to follow us on Instagram and Twitter for exclusive content!
