Pastor Josh starts our new sermon series, Disciple Makers. With the theme of spending time with Jesus, Peter.
Every artist has a story, and Peter Burton's is one you need to hear. This episode is a deep dive into his journey of faith, resilience, and the power of music to heal. Peter opens up about his struggles with mental health, the pivotal moments that shaped his faith, and the inspiration behind his moving new song, "Where Would I Be." From a broken guitar to a renewed sense of purpose, Peter's story reminds us that God can use even our deepest wounds to bring hope to others. Jesus said, “REMAIN in me … APART from me you can do nothing.” This statement is for those who are in Jesus, and it's also for those who have never followed him. If you've never made a decision to follow Jesus, you need to get connected. It's time to make dead things come alive. It's time to get grafted into the family of God. But this is mainly a strong warning to the church. Jesus said these words to his followers. You need to know that if you've made a decision to follow Jesus sometime in the past, you have to stay connected. Go back to the disciples … did they fail? Maybe they failed in the moment … but not in the long term. The reason we know their names … the reason the church exists today … the reason the name of Jesus is known in every corner of the earth … is because these men didn't leave the room. It was awkward; it was uncomfortable. And no doubt, following Jesus brought lots of awkwardness for the rest of their lives. Beyond awkward. We can say hard, difficult, conflict-laced moments for the rest of their lives. But they remained, and they didn't back down. They stayed connected to the true vine, and it changed the world. And later in life, much later in life, Peter writes some words about a terribly awkward moment. Peter says seeing Jesus after walking away from him is the ultimate in awkward – it far surpasses awkward. He says it would be better if you'd never known Jesus to begin with. Peter who disowned Jesus – Peter who disconnected – is the same Peter leading the church and warning followers not to walk away. He knows the pain and awkwardness. Church – remain. It's a word that can only be used for those who are connected. Jesus said this to his followers. He says it to his inner circle of eleven, as one of them has wandered off into the night to betray him. Church, remain and abide — stay connected.
This Sunday we had Sabine Adeyinka talking to us about how Peter, James, and John's conversations with Jesus reveal His identity and authority.
In John 13, Jesus humbles Himself to wash His disciples' feet, showing that true greatness is found in servanthood. This message will challenge us to follow His example—serving with humility, trusting God's plan, and embracing our identity in Christ. We'll also share in communion as we remember His ultimate sacrifice.
In this message, Peter gives us a description of who Jesus is and what His mission statement is. He then teaches on how we can be with Jesus, and how to posture our hearts in relationship to Him.
Peter presents his recent work on Christian leadership. What makes someone a "leader"? What does leadership have to do with spirituality, rhetoric and values? What is the specific nature of "Christian leadership"? And what resources does "Christian leadership" have to offer that can mitigate against the abuse of leadership? Please note that the ideas expressed in this lecture do not necessarily represent the views of L'Abri Fellowship. For more resources, visit the L'Abri Ideas Library at labriideaslibrary.org. God has great plans for you and your family. God can do more IN your family, FOR your family and THROUGH your family than you can imagine. A family that knows God and chooses to serve Him wholeheartedly has exponential potential to influence not only churches and communities but also nations and generations for good and for God. We live in a world today that is so self-centred, and even Christians and churches can become very me-centred. The idea that families matter is constantly ridiculed as old fashioned, yet it is the very break up of families that is at the root of so many problems in society, whether in the form of depression, crime, or social and economic disadvantages. Of course, God loves each individual and has personal blessings and plans for each one of us. But we must understand how much the Bible focuses on a much bigger picture of building the best families and family lines in every generation, even in the face of so much previous family dysfunction and trouble. The God of the Bible is often known as the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob because He is a God who made great family promises to them and to their descendants: promises that also apply to us when we follow Jesus. Galatians 3:29 says: ‘If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.' So, what does this mean for your family, whether you are a two parent or one parent or even a no parent family? 1. Your family can be blessed in every generation (Genesis 12:1-2; Genesis 17:6-8; Genesis 26:24; Genesis 28:12-14; Genesis 20; Genesis 26:7; Matthew 1) 2. Your family must choose to serve God in in every generation (Genesis 15:5-6; Genesis 17:1,9; Hebrews 11:21; Genesis 26:4-5; Deuteronomy 6:4-7; Joshua 24:15) 3. Your family can be a great blessing in every generation (Genesis 12:2; Genesis 28:14; Nehemiah 3:12; Ezra 1:5) Apply 1. Your family can be blessed in every generation. The first and foundational book of the Bible is Genesis where we read of God making and repeating His promises of continued family blessing to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob (Genesis 12:1-2; Genesis 17:6-8; Genesis 26:24; Genesis 28:12-14). In short God wants to bless your family no matter how much trouble or dysfunction there has been in your family. If you doubt this, consider some of the problems encountered in Abraham's family and line. Abraham was willing to risk other men sleeping with his wife to save his own life (Genesis 20:2) and his son Isaac did the same (Genesis 26:7). Also, Abraham's wife Sarah told her husband he should sleep with the family maid to have a surrogate child for her, then Isaac's wife deceived him so that her favourite son would get his blessing, and the deceived son Esau was so made he vowed to kill his brother Jacob. Jacob fled for his life and proceeded to deceive pretty much everyone he came in contact with. Two of his sons killed the man who had raped their sister and then wiped out all the men of his town. Ten of Jacob's 12 sons were so jealous of their brother Joseph that they beat him up and sold as a slave. Violence, sexual sin, lying and cheating - this was what this family was like. Yet God had mercy on this family. God helped and blessed this family. From this family Joseph grew up to save his family and nation and many other nations from a great famine. From this family came Israel's greatest King, David, who himself was an adulterer and murderer, and if you read Matthew 1 you will see that it was from this family that One came who would bless all families on earth: the Messiah Jesus Christ. This tells us that God can rescue and restore any family. God can raise up great and godly leaders even if the rest of the family is far from God. There is hope for you. There is hope for your family. It's not too late. It's not too far gone. Even in families which have been dysfunctional for generations, God can suddenly raise up great leaders like Joseph and Josiah in Abraham's family line. Also the Bible shows that although you may have come from a far from Christian family, and you may have messed up yourself, God can get you married into a line of blessing. This is what happened with Rahab the former prostitute and Ruth from a family of idol worshippers. 2. Your family must choose to serve God in in every generation. God wants to bless families but each family needs to be shaped by those who choose to follow the Lord (Genesis 15:5-6; Genesis 17:1,9). This means that we must believe God's word. You need to believe as Abram believed that your family has a destiny. You must live in faith, not fear, for your family, your children and grandchildren, or great grandchildren (Hebrews 11:21). Today there are so many forces at work to pervert, undermine and destroy people, particularly vulnerable children and young people, yet despite all this we must not give way to worry and doubt. For God has another way for us to live, and that is the way of faith. By faith in God's word, we will see a new generation raised up for God: a generation that will experience great deliverance. Also, you need to live in obedience to God's word (Genesis 26:4-5). We need to choose to obey God by training our children in the ways of the Lord (Deuteronomy 6:4-7). Basically, parents, or a parent, have to train and shape children and decide what goes and what doesn't go in your family even if it is acceptable with other families. When the Israelites were faced with idol worship in Canaan, Joshua made his own position very clear (Joshua 24:15). This was a decision and a determination. If you want your children to be given fully to God, make sure that you lead the way. It is important that children are dedicated to the Lord at an early age. This marks them for God from the beginning of their lives. If you have not done this, you need to do it. As the children grow older renew your vows of dedication as a whole family. Great things can flow from this decision. 3. Your family can be a great blessing in every generation (Genesis 12:2; Genesis 28:14). All through the history of the Israelites, we see that it was through dedicated families that the blessings flowed. Families helped to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem (Nehemiah 3:12). Families helped rebuild the Temple (Ezra 1:5). Families were at the core of the small group that Christianity was founded on - there were three sets of brothers in the 12 of Jesus: Peter and Andrew, James and John, Matthew and James. Matthew and James may also have been cousins of Jesus. Families have shaped the church and history: the Wesley family in the 18th century; William and Catherine Booth in the 19th century. And families are at the forefront of Christian advance today. God is touching nations through families such as the Castellanos family, the Joel Osteen family, and many others here today. And who knows what God will do when you and your family are fully committed to Him? Today we need more distinctively Christian families. Today choose to believe that God wants to make your family and every family great. For this is how we can strengthen the church and shape the world.

Disciple making incorporates the entirety of the Christian life, and it is one of the clearest ways that we can show love towards our family and the world. Now that we are clear on what it means to be/make a disciple of Jesus, let's turn our attention to the brief but helpful pattern that Peter gives to us.
Fear and doubt fade in the presence of Jesus. When was the last time you were aware Jesus was with you?
(1) The WONDER of the Choice. We have SINNED against a holy God (Romans 3:23), so we deserve judgment for our sins (Romans 6:23, John 3:19, Hebrews 9:27). It is a WONDER that God sent a Redeemer to save us (John 3:17, Titus 3:4, Luke 9:56). It is a WONDER because God FORGIVES our sins (Psalm 103:12, Isaiah 53:6, Colossians 2:13-14). It is a WONDER because God ADOPTS us as children (Ephesians 1:5, Romans 8:14,16). It is a WONDER because God gives us a NEW NATURE (John 1:12-13, 2 Corinthians 5:17). It is a WONDER because God makes us a HOME with Him forever (John 14:2). The GREATEST WONDER is that God CHOSE US for Himself (Ephesians 1:4, Romans 5:8). (2) The WISDOM of the Choice. It is WISE, because those who belong to Christ have GRACE to help in time of need (Romans 5:1-2, Hebrews 4:16). It is WISE because those who choose Christ have POWER over sin (Romans 6:11-12, Galatians 5:16). It is WISE because in Christ we have AUTHORITY over satan (Colossians 1:13, Luke 10:19, James 4:7). It is WISE because by choosing Jesus we can have VICTORY over the world (1 John 5:4-5). (3) The WEIGHT of the Choice We must SUBMIT to Christ (our lives are not our own). We must FOLLOW Christ (denying ourselves). We must OBEY Christ (serving in His Kingdom) - 1 John 5:3, Matthew 11:30, Psalm 23:4,6, Isaiah 43:2. If you HAVEN'T chosen Jesus, why not make TODAY the day that you do?

There are more personal interactions recorded concerning Peter and Jesus than all the other apostle's combined. Simon Peter was one the earliest disciples having been brought to meet Jesus by his brother Andrew. After the great confession of Jesus as the Christ -Messiah- the Son of the Living God he and his confession shared by all the apostle's became the rock on which the church is built. Peter was known for his fierce loyalty to Jesus in which at times he expressed ideas contrary to God's will and Jesus' mission. At the last Passover of Jesus and his Twelve he stated that if all the others forsook Jesus and fled he would never do this. Yet when the Jewish authorities and the battalion of Roman soldiers came to arrest Jesus after stricking off the ear of the high priest servant and told to put his sword away by Jesus Peter too only followed at a distance. When through the apostle's John personal knowledge of some in the high priest circle Peter gained entrance into the courtyard so he could hear what was happening to his Master Jesus he publicly denied knowing Jesus three times. -I do not know the man.- On the third denial spoken even with a curse a rooster crowed and Jesus looked at him. He was overcome with grief and wept bitter tears. Surely with such a sin he woukd be forver barred from being an apostle. Yet on the day of his rising from the dead Jesus met privately with Peter. Then some possibly 3 or 4 weeks Jesus on the shore cooking breakfast for the small group of 7 disciples. He eagerly wades to shore to meet his Lord. The gospel of John winds down with the beautiful story of Peter's restoration by Jesus. Peter is led to feel the weight of his sin so he can feel the even greater weight of God's grace. The forgiveness offered through Jesus overcomes our shame, sets us back on course, and transforms us to live in light of the gospel.
Pastor Doug shares from the Gospel of John today. Peter's example is extraordinary as even after his denial of Jesus Peter was restored and did great things for the Kingdom of God and so can you.
Jesus Christ, our Living Hope Jeff Christianson Every one of us struggles at times with discouragement, with concerns that might build to worry or anxiety. Add the world-wide crisis into the mix, challenges with health, money, politics, emotional and relational stress - it's not surprising that doubts and strife in the mind abound among people. Despair and hopelessness are not uncommon to all of humanity, including us, the people of God. In those seasons of struggle, our hope seems to be quite inadequate and meager. This brief article is meant to encourage those of us who face moments of being downcast to fix our eyes upon Jesus. Sometimes, it seems as though hope is just fading away. But the wonderful truth is that God has a remedy. That's not unusual; He is the God of Hope! His remedy is unique and distinct. His Holy Spirit wants to flood our lives with hope. I've found that anchoring my hope correctly saves a lot of heartbreak and fills my life with such great joy. There is no greater hope than the everlasting hope found in our Lord Jesus Christ and sufficiency of His Word. Hope has a name, and it's Jesus Christ. Hope In The Person of Jesus Peter says, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.” (1 Peter 1:3). Those who trust in Jesus are born into a new family, into a new kingdom, and a new life where the God of hope is involved. They are set free from living a life with hope placed in the world instead of Christ. They are a new creation, Christ is the gracious King, and God is their benevolent Father (2 Corinthians 5:17; 1 John 3:1; Hebrews 4:14-16). All of these wonderful truths are anchored in the resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus, our living hope, is a person (1 Tim 1:1; John 20:26-28). All too often, we try to put our hope in things that the world offers: programs, steps, outlines, life hacks, coping strategies, therapies, philosophies, false religions. These all can deliver temporary hope but they leave us without satisfaction. Christians place their ultimate hope in a person we meet through humble repentance and faith. And, this person is unlike any other. He's the preeminent one. He's the exalted one. He's the all-sufficient One. He is the glorious Christ! Hope In Jesus' Return In Jesus we have a blessed hope; he will return. Paul describes Christians as “looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ” (Titus 2:13). How amazing is it that this life is not all that we have? It is so easy to be so focused on day to day living that we forget that our Savior is coming to gather us to Himself. We will never be separated from Him or His holiness. We will spend eternity together. How much smaller do some issues seem when compared to eternity? When we lose sight of eternity, we lose sight of what is important (2 Corinthians 4:16). When we lose sight of what's important, we chase after the temporary and cannot find satisfaction. We are left empty and hopeless. Instead, let us fix our hope in the love of Christ and the grace to be revealed when He returns (Ephesians 3:14-21; 1 Peter 1:13). Hope: Christ In You Colossians 1:27 says, “Christ in you, the hope of glory.” Our hope is not far off from us. Christ isn't isolated from us. He's right there in our lives. Because Jesus is always with us, and lives in us, we can be sure that he hears us when we pray. Jesus is intimately involved with us, everywhere, all the time (Ps 139:7-10). God isn't simply with us, he is orchestrating our lives for good. God is right in the middle of it with us. Even in difficult circumstances we can have hope because God in His sovereignty has us right where he wants us to be. Whether it is to grow us in faith or draw us closer to Him, God has us where we are for a reason and he is sustaining us through each difficulty (Isaiah 41:10; Romans 5:1-5). When we are encompassed and surrounded with pressure-filled circumstances, our temptation is to put our hope in changing the situation. We tell ourselves, “If only x were to happen, then life would be better.” Instead of focusing on our circumstances, we need to turn our eyes to the resurrected Christ. We find resurrected life in our resurrected Lord. Instead of trying harder and “pushing through”, we need to put our hope in Christ. That is what brings us living hope. There's no situation so torturous, so impossible, so agonizing, so depleting of vitality, but what the Lord, who is risen from the dead, can share his resurrection life with us and see us through it, and if he so wills, even deliver us out of that situation. May you and I, today, find help, hope and comfort in Jesus Christ, our loving hope. Reflection Questions Are you tempted to place your hope in anything outside of the resurrected Lord Jesus Christ? Why Is the Feast Day of the Dedication of Two Basilicas Important? Why does the Church celebrate the dedication of a building(s)? The feast celebrated today reminds us that indeed, dedication of buildings is very important. In Rome, as the Church began to grow, it experienced the martyrdom of both St. Peter and St. Paul. Their blood was spilled in testifying to the truth. The location of their martyrdom became centers where Christians gathered and prayed. Hear more why these two Basilicas are important. Hear more about these two great disciples of Jesus – Peter and Paul! Listen to this Meditation Media.
In this thought-provoking episode of Queer Christian Conversations, we grapple with a daunting question: Is the wrath of God a genuine expression of the Divine, or have centuries of interpretation clouded our understanding? Sharing a vivid dream encounter with Jesus & Peter, we dig deep into scriptures and theological discussions to unravel the true character of God. From the assurances of Isaiah 54:9 to the historic narratives of Sodom and Gomorrah, we aim to decode God's sense of justice and the implications of divine sovereignty. Does God truly wear the hats of both savior and punisher? And when we falter, how does God guide us back? This exploration might open doors to fresh perspectives, perhaps even leading to more questions than answers. So, approach with an open heart and a curious mind as we embark on this spiritual odyssey.

Sermon preached at Mid County Baptist Church
Friends of the Rosary: Today, August 6th is the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord. This commemoration anticipates the glory of heaven, where we shall see God face to face. Three witnesses chosen by Jesus — Peter, James, and John — saw in Mount Thabor in Israel that our Lord's face and clothes become dazzling with light, and Moses and Elijah appear. Moses and Elijah represent the two principal components of the Old Testament: the Law and the Prophets. Moses was the giver of the Law, and Elijah was considered the greatest of the prophets. A cloud covered Him and a voice from heaven said: "This is my Son, my Chosen; listen to Him!" On the mountain, the three core disciples saw the glory of God's Kingdom shining out of Jesus. They also learn that Jesus himself is the complete Word of God. The Catechism explains that Christ's Transfiguration aims at strengthening the apostles' faith in anticipation of his Passion: the ascent onto the 'high mountain' prepares for the ascent to Calvary. Week 1 - The Big Three 5-28-23 Sunday service (11am)
This is May 14th's sermon by Peter Leithart on the value and purpose of Jesus's resurrection. Trinity Reformed Church is a CREC church in Huntsville, AL. seeking to extend and unite the Kingdom in the Huntsville area. Check out our website, Facebook or YouTube!
On the morning of Jesus's resurrection, Peter and John raced one another to Jesus's tomb. John won the race, but Peter was the first to go inside. John followed him, and when he saw all of the burial garments laying there, John believed, even before he understood it all. Jesus's resurrection is central to Christianity. Peter was coming off his absolute lowest moment when he denied even knowing Jesus, and then watched him get murdered. But thanks to Jesus's grace, he bounced back and Jesus restored him. Covering everything. Forgiving everything. He does the same with us, and anyone who'd believe. The empty tomb moves us to believe and be restored with new life and purpose!
In this episode, I sit down with Baptist New Testament scholar Timothy Rucker to discuss the keys of Jesus (Rev. 3:7), Peter (Matt. 16:19), and Eliakim (Isa. 22:22).
In the book of Hebrews, we see Jesus as our Great High Priest. Peter Louis unfolds how this confession empowers us to be the house of God sustained by His covenant of rest. At the heart of revival, He will find sons and daughters who are at rest and confident in who He is.
