Calling in from Los Angeles is today's guest Dan Brunn, an award-winning architect whose practice is inspired by sustainability and growing up amid the Bauhaus buildings of Tel Aviv. We find out how Dan leapt headfirst into the world of bespoke architecture by scoring a prestigious Venice beach build fresh out of architecture school. We also find out about the 'Flip Flop' house, and what it's like to live in something you created. We also chat to Dan about good design in general and how that translates to watches … in particular, an intriguing Omega project. But before that, Felix and Andy also manage to cover off a new whisky from Lark, new tunes from Patrick Droney and some new reality TV. Honestly, what more could you want? Happy New Year! This week’s guest is Dan Brunn - owner and principal of DB Architecture. He’s an accomplished architect, yes, but he’s also a car lover, which began much earlier than I even expected. With that, we talk about his younger years growing up in Tel Aviv, and how he went from barely speaking English to communicating through drawing. We delve into punk rock as it relates to urban planning, as well as the similarities between cars and watches and how they relate to happiness. What I enjoy about Dan is his unabashed honesty about, well, everything: his experience, his process and his approach. When you talk to him, you quickly realize why he coined the phrase for his business, “empathetic design.” You’ll see what I mean... This is Convo By Design with a special conversation with Dan Burnn, a fascinating architect. This interview was recorded live from the WestEdge Design Fair in the Programming Lounge presented by Convo By Design. This conversation was really fun for me. Dan is a very interesting guy with a unique perspective on architecture and how he bends and blends ideas to fit the lives of his clients. Dan and I spoke about modern ideas in architecture and studied two of his California projects, the Flip-Flop House in Venice and the Bridge House in Hancock Park. Dan was raised in Tel Aviv and his love of and passion for the Bauhaus architecture in which he grew up is evident in his work. His designs are expressive and unique but the first goal is to be of use to those living within. The Flip-Flop project, as you’ll hear is about privacy in a public setting and display of Art, while using the light and views without the ability to close the space off from public view. The Bridge House is a master work of ingenuity and spatial craftwork. Both show ho Brunn approaches his craft. Before we get into this conversation with Dan, I want to thank you for listening and invite you to join in the conversation, you can find us @ConvoByDesign on twitter and @ConvoXDesign with an ‘X” on Facebook and Instagram. You can also find videos from these conversations on our YouTube channel, again search Convo By Design and you will find over 120 videos from some of your favorite guests. Architect Dan Brunn was born in Tel Aviv and moved to Los Angeles at age 7. The architectural contrast between the two cities made a deep impression and informed his life’s direction. Despite a language barrier, he made friends though the universal language of drawing cars and sharing new, exotic snacks. A guidance counselor once tried to convince him that he wouldn’t amount to anything. He’s proved that wrong by 1000%. Now, when he’s not staring down a mountain lion, he’s choreographing exquisite spaces. Images and more from our guest! Please say Hi on social! Dan Brunn’s early life in Tel Aviv, subsequent move with his family to Southern California at age 7 and his later nomadic lifestyle as a adult certainly did not make his life easy, yet set the stage for a highly creative and driven character to develop. Someone as uncompromising as he is a kind soul who wants to do good in the world. Dan is a young architect based out of LA creating buildings inspired by the Bauhaus aesthetic he grew up around in Tel Aviv, but also influenced by Southern California modernism. We chatted about what moves him, his very early love for architecture, his influences as well as his love of cars, music, food and travel. Listen in to hear Dan speak about his work and life. About the podcast: The intent behind our podcast series "Truth Is Golden" is to look at renowned creatives and their work with a critical eye. We aim to ask deep questions in order to peel back the layers of marketing, clever one-liners and sexy branding. We want to show the world what it truly takes for genuinely creative forces to find their own voice build a career on what is very often nothing more than a drive to do things differently. We want to hear about the successes, the failures, the inspirational stories and the lessons gleaned from all of it. We want the truth, so that we can inspire other people to fulfill their own creative aspirations and in the process contribute to making the world a better place.
