I don't know what it's like where you live, but I live in Seattle, WA, and it is starting to feel like fall. The days are already getting a little shorter. The evenings are cool. We even have rain in the forecast again… And very soon, our days are going to be much shorter, and for natural light photographers, that means our potential working hours also take a cutIf you're a photographer who works with natural light, you know exactly what I'm talking about.Summer gives us long days. And those long days, give us options…Then the season changes and our window for "good light" gets smaller and smaller. And what really sucks, is that this change in light happens just as the busy fall season is picking up.So, just as our bookings are increasing, our light starts leaving us.Now, if you listen to this podcast then you probably already know that I love working with strobes and flash, and you're probably think that thats what I'm going to pivot into…. But I also know that there are many photographers who work exclusively with natural light and LOVE natural light, and so it thats you, then please stay, because I actually wrote this episode for you…There is a cost to being a natural light photographer that nobody talks about. And honestly, if someone would have had this conversation with me at the beginning of my career, ti would have saved me years of stress and years of wasted time and money. So lets talk about it…SHOWNOTES:https://sandracoanstudios.com/the-real-cost-of-natural-light/Lighting on Location: https://www.sandracoaneducation.com/lighting-on-location

Send us Fan MailWe need a nap.Must have been something in the air this week as all of us seemed to be struggling getting a good night's rest. I remember my youth, way back in the late 1900s, and 4 hours of sleep on a concrete slab and I was good as new. Maybe that kind of activity is why it's a whole damn project to get a good rest these days. Zzz.....Right in line with our chatter last week 10 Barrel reached out to us about some of their "functional beverages." That's the word we couldn't think of last week. They've got an NA RTD cocktail now that has guarana, ginseng, caffeine, mushrooms, and sea salt in it. We're not sure we need an energy RTD, but we're down to try it.In the Apple Beer Battle we didn't know existed Kestone Light comes out swinging with "the most American" apple beer you can find. Take that, Busch! This reminded us of Natural Light's Naturday's, something we enjoyed sitting on the beach in FL. Good times.Sad beer news this week that UK pubs are really struggling these days and closing at an alarming rate. With their pub culture that's some grave news. If everything wasn't so damn expensive these days maybe they could keep those pubs full.Positive news though, Creature Comforts Brewing is growing and will surpass 100,000 barrels brewed this year as they also expand their spirits offerings. More good news from Maine Beer Co. as they announce they're doing well and planning a large expansion. In other news Yoko Ono shrieks a lawsuit at a small brewer and Ball Corp. says their can supply is mostly spoken for this year, and possibly in 2027.Wild stuff. Thanks for listening to Beer Guys Radio! For episode 50, we're joined by Janne Ford — a floral designer and photographer based in North Yorkshire, UK. Her background is in fashion and textiles, and more than a decade in that industry gave her a deeply trained eye for colour, texture, and movement. That eye now turns entirely toward flowers. She grows what she photographs. She shoots only in natural light. The results are floral portraits that feel less like images and more like moments — intimate, seasonal, and full of quiet intention.Janne's move from fashion to floristry wasn't a departure — it was a deepening. The principles that shaped her textile work (how colour behaves, how texture creates mood, how movement draws the eye) translate directly into how she designs and photographs flowers. That compositional confidence is hard to pin down until you know where it comes from.Because Janne grows what she photographs, her work is genuinely tethered to the seasons — not styled to look that way, but rooted in the real, day-to-day changes of a living garden. Each image belongs to a specific time of year, a quality of light, a bloom at its exact peak. It's a patient practice, and the body of work it produces feels honest and alive in a way that's increasingly rare.Janne runs floral photography workshops from her garden studio in North Yorkshire and leads creative retreats in the UK and France. If you want to learn to see and capture botanical beauty with more intention, her website is the place to start. Until next time — peace, love and rebloom
Registered dietitian nutritionist Leyla Muedin discusses how exposure to natural daylight may improve metabolic health beyond diet and exercise, highlighting a controlled crossover study of 13 adults aged 65+ with type 2 diabetes published in Cell Metabolism. Participants spent 4.5 days in living spaces lit by either natural light through large windows or artificial light, with identical meals, sleep, activity, and screen time; after a 4-week washout they switched conditions. Natural light was associated with more hours of blood glucose in the normal range, less glucose variability, higher evening melatonin, and improved fat oxidative metabolism, suggesting effects on circadian “body clocks” and coordination between central and peripheral clocks. Muedin recommends getting morning light on the face, reducing sunglasses and high SPF use, dimming lights at night, keeping consistent sleep, and spending more time outdoors; she also notes that architecture can limit sunlight exposure.
On this episode of Bumming with Bobcat, we step back into the ring for War To Settle The Score II — featuring two of the most legendary budget beers to ever hit the cooler: Natural Light vs Busch Light. From college party staples to backyard BBQ essentials, Natty Light (4.2% ABV) and Busch Light (4.1% ABV) have been going head-to-head for YEARS. But today, we're putting them to the ultimate test to finally answer the question:Which cheap beer reigns supreme? We're breaking down:Taste

Have you ever walked into a space and immediately felt calmer, without knowing why? Or noticed how a room flooded with natural light just feels better to be in? That's not an accident. It's your nervous system responding to your environment, and it's exactly why biophilic design matters more than ever in interior design today. In this episode, I'm sitting down with returning guest and seasoned residential designer Martha Lowry to unpack what biophilic design really is — beyond the buzzword. We're talking about how bringing elements of the natural environment indoors can dramatically improve emotional well-being, mental health, creativity, and even how clients experience their homes daily. This conversation is especially important for interior designers who want to design spaces that don't just look beautiful, but truly support the people living in them.If you've ever struggled to explain why certain design choices feel right — or you want to add more depth, science, and intention to your client communication — this episode will help you understand how natural light, plants, color psychology, organic shapes, and neuro-aesthetics work together to create homes that heal, calm, and inspire. Biophilic design isn't about trends. It's about designing with the human experience in mind.Featured GuestMartha Lowry is a residential interior designer with over three decades of experience and a unique balance of analytical and creative expertise. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics and a Bachelor of Arts in Interior Design, and she is a member of the Design Leaders Collective. Based in North Carolina, Martha's work focuses on creating emotionally supportive, beautifully intentional homes rooted in biophilic design, neuro-esthetics, and a deep understanding of how people experience space. What You'll Learn in This Episode✳️ What biophilic design is and why it matters✳️ How natural light impacts mood, energy, and well-being✳️ Using plants and materials to bring nature indoors✳️ Color psychology and emotional responses in interior design✳️ How designers apply biophilic principles for healthier homesRead the Blog >>> 5 Biophilic Design Elements for Healthier, Calmer HomesNEXT STEPS:

In this episode, we unpack the very real pressure many food photographers feel online to move toward artificial lighting and whether that pressure actually reflects real client work. We share our personal journeys with light, where we started, what we use now, and how our lighting choices have evolved alongside our businesses. We talk honestly about fear, identity, confidence and the misconception that using one lighting approach makes you more or less 'professional'.You'll walk away with a clear framework for deciding when natural light makes sense, when artificial light is the better tool and why learning to understand light matters far more than the gear itself. If you've ever felt unsure, behind, or pressured by what you see on Instagram - this episode is your permission slip to do things your way.Focus & Flourish, Photography Business Talk is a podcast for food photographers who want to build sustainable, confident, and creatively fulfilling businesses.
