To kick off Elixir Wizards Season 13, The Creator's Lab, we're joined by Zach Daniel, the creator of Igniter and the Ash framework. Zach joins hosts Owen Bickford and Charles Suggs to discuss the mechanics and aspirations of his latest brainchild, Igniter—a code generation and project patching framework designed to revolutionize the Elixir development experience. Igniter isn't just about generating code; it's about generating smarter code. By leveraging tools like Sourcerer and Rewrite, Igniter allows developers to modify source code and batch updates by directly interacting with Elixir's AST instead of regex patching. This approach streamlines new project setup and package installations and enhances overall workflow. They also discuss the strategic implications of Igniter for the broader Elixir community. Zach hopes Igniter will foster a more interconnected and efficient ecosystem that attracts new developers to Elixir and caters to the evolving needs of seasoned Elixir engineers. Topics discussed in this episode: Advanced package installation and code generation improve the developer experience Scripting and staging techniques streamline project updates Innovative methods for smoother installation processes in Elixir packages High-level tools apply direct patches to source code Progressive feature additions simplify the mix phx.new experience Chaining installers and composing tasks for more efficient project setup Continuous improvement in developer experiences to boost Elixir adoption Encourage listeners to collaborate by sharing code generation patterns Introduction of a new mix task aimed at removing the "unless" keyword in preparation for Elixir 1.18 You can learn more in the upcoming book "Building Web Applications with Ash Framework" by Zach and Rebecca Links mentioned: https://smartlogic.io/ https://alembic.com.au/blog/igniter-rethinking-code-generation-with-project-patching https://hexdocs.pm/igniter/readme.html https://github.com/ash-project/igniter https://www.zachdaniel.dev/p/serialization-is-the-secret https://www.zachdaniel.dev/p/welcome-to-my-substack https://ash-hq.org/ https://hexdocs.pm/sourceror/readme.html https://smartlogic.io/podcast/elixir-wizards/s10-e09-hugo-lucas-future-of-elixir-community/ https://github.com/hrzndhrn/rewrite https://github.com/zachdaniel https://github.com/liveshowy/webauthn_components https://hexdocs.pm/elixir/Regex.html https://github.com/msaraiva/vscode-surface https://github.com/swoosh/swoosh https://github.com/erlef/oidcc https://alembic.com.au/ https://www.zachdaniel.dev/ Special Guest: Zach Daniel.

In this episode, we dive into one of the most significant housing policy changes in British Columbia's history: the Small Scale Multi-Unit Housing (SSMUH) legislation and the province-wide densification of single-family home lots - but this time, with 3 different Architectural firms. This is likely the largest rezoning initiative we'll witness in our lifetimes, and with such a massive shift comes a lot of uncertainty. What does this mean for housing affordability, development timelines, and the future of our cities? To help unpack these complex topics, we are joined by leading voices from three prominent architectural firms in BC, all members of the FIELD COLLECTIVE, a collaborative group of small architecture practices. Together, they will share their insights on the SSMUH initiative, its implications for housing design, and how their industry is responding to these new policies. Our guests today include Tony from TOAD Design, Jenny and David from 2 by 2, and Daichi from Bobo Arch. We'll hear about their personal journeys in architecture, as well as how their firms are navigating this new legislative landscape. One of the central issues of this conversation revolves around the province's recent introduction of pre-approved housing designs. These designs are intended to streamline the development process, cutting down on costly and lengthy permitting times. But will this initiative actually drive down housing costs? Or could it result in more uniform, less site-specific designs that lack creativity and adaptability? Tony, Jenny, David, and Daichi will explore whether these pre-approved models offer real solutions or if they're just another example of top-down policy lacking industry consultation. Finally, we'll get a preview of PLEX APPEAL, an open-air exhibition organized by the FIELD COLLECTIVE as part of the upcoming Design Vancouver Festival. This event will showcase innovative designs enabled by the new multiplex zoning rules, offering the public a firsthand look at what the future of housing in BC could look like.Tune in to this episode for an insightful conversation on one of the most pressing topics in housing today. Learn how the SSMUH legislation and pre-approved designs could reshape the real estate landscape, and gain valuable insights from some of the brightest minds in BC's architecture community. Healthcare is fundamentally a scientific pursuit, from clinical skills to cutting-edge diagnostic testing. Medicine is also an art, and art plays a vital role in the success of patient care. Once such element of art is where healthcare is delivered. Physical structures can affect a patient's experiences and outcomes. On this topic, SoundPractice host Mike Sacopulos interviews Sharon Woodworth. Sharon Woodworth, FAIA, LEED AP BD+C, EDAC, ACHA, is the healthcare sector leader of HED, a national integrated architecture and engineering firm with more than 400 employees and elite clients such as USC, the VA Medical Center, and the U.S. State Department. Her sector specializes in designing innovative healthcare centers for efficient patient care. Woodworth's career path that led to architecture is an inspiring one, and she is known for driving change in operations and care through design. Hear her thoughts on design of outpatient facilities, designing to retain healthcare providers, how design can support “lean” operational models for staff, and trends for the future. So many of us think owning a business is going to give us better work life balance than a 9-5 or working under someone else, but the reality is many new business owners end up working 24/7, burning out, getting sick, and it's almost seen as a right of passage for business owners. At this point we start to make the necessary changes, but wouldn't it be nice if we could skip the struggle and simply follow a better path from the start? If you're not enjoying your day to day journey of building your business, you won't be able to fully enjoy or appreciate your results when you do start seeing your definition of success. My guest today is on a mission to show entrepreneurs that the possibilities of what they can achieve in life is truly limitless and that the only thing that is stopping them from getting from where they are now to where they want to be, is their mindset & skillset (both of which you have the power to shift). The Catalyst: Sparking Creative Transformation in Healthcare
“Space is power,” says Sharon Woodworth, sector leader at National Healthcare Practice at Harley Ellis Devereaux, who joins The Catalyst to discuss the changing face of healthcare architectural design. With so many industries using technology to create automated experiences for patients, the healthcare industry is wise to follow suit. Sharon explains why she would like outpatient care to more resemble the Apple Genius Bar, and hospitals to have a layout like the Getty Museum in Los Angeles. She and Dr. Lara discuss the pros and cons of what is an increasing level of standardization in healthcare settings. When the clinician knows exactly where everything is, it limits cognitive drain, yet at what point does standardized feel too sterile? Especially when studies show that inpatients, as a result of a nesting instinct, will begin to personalize their hospital room within an hour of checking in, and clinicians who personalize their office space are shown to be more productive and more receptive to their patients. How do we design inpatient and outpatient buildings differently so that they promote physician wellness and help prevent burnout? It starts, Sharon says, with clinicians speaking up to higher admin and architects. This begins by realistically visualizing a typical day in the workplace. If architects choose to include fewer exam rooms in their plans, what does this mean for clinician burnout? And if and when another major global disaster happens, how do healthcare spaces accommodate a major influx of patients who will need rooms? In this episode, Sharon and Dr. Lara Salyer discuss the importance of creativity to overall health and their own experiences with personalized workspaces, the impact it had on both clinicians and patients of all ages. Quotes • “If you were not, as a general public, aware of the impact of the environment on health, Covid taught you. Yes, it's important to have space around you, to have fresh air, to be aware of what's going on around you.” (6:46 | Sharon Woodworth) • “We can learn a lot from other industries. Healthcare lags as far as the use of technology and AI, whereas we've been self-checking our bags and our airline flights for years, and healthcare is so lagging behind. In other industries, there are kiosks, where you go and check in. Think of going to a restaurant and the people come and find you and get you seated.” (9:34 | Dr. Lara Salyer) • “Space is power, and you have to fight for what you want. And what happens if you are in a position to be asked to design a space, don't assume that you're going to be given a space of respite. Don't assume that to begin with. So, when you're asked to join that process, start asking, ‘What are you doing for us?' Not the patient–yes, we're all into patient-centered care–but, I'm sorry, without the staff, there is no patient-centered care. So, you have to start with asking, ‘What are you going to be doing for us?'” (17:52 | Sharon Woodworth) • “Covid taught us, again, that if you've taken lean to such an extent that you've got the number of rooms based on the number of staff, it's going to hurt you on that day, that month, or that year when you don't have the staff and you need to expand the space. And lean can eradicate that future flexibility and that future expansion.” (27:08 | Sharon Woodworth) Links Connect with Sharon Woodworth LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/sharon-e-woodworth-faia-acha-edac-leed-92337111/ Connect with Lara: Website: https://drlarasalyer.com The Catalyst Way: https://drlarasalyer.com/catalyst Instagram: @drlarasalyer Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/drlarasalyer Linked-In: https://www.linkedin.com/in/drlarasalyer/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/DrLaraSalyer TikTok: @Creativity.Doctor Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm
When it comes to building a custom home, just remember, this is a prototype! It's never been built before! With that being said, the inevitible will happen and that's what we call a change order. This isn't always a bad thing and those two words more often get a bad wrap! Today the three of us discuss what change orders are, why they happen, ways to try to avoid some of them and why they have an associated cost to them. In our increasingly connected world, the importance of promoting a sense of community and fostering a creative environment in our workplaces cannot be overstated. Our surroundings can profoundly affect not only our productivity but also the connections we establish with each other. By channeling our understanding of the spaces around us, we can unlock the potential for innovation and collaboration, often hidden in plain sight.Today we welcome a special guest, Rebecca Swanner: a trailblazer in architectural engineering design. Rebecca is the Workplace Sector Leader for Harley Ellis Devereaux Corporation (HED), the firm that is redesigning the way we perceive and interact with office spaces. Her invaluable insights reveal how consciously designed spaces can foster not just productivity but also inclusion, energy, and levity, transforming our surroundings into a catalyst for clarity.Diverse Work Environments and their ImpactRebecca stresses the importance of acknowledging that people work differently in diverse environments. Some thrive amidst constant stimulation, while others need an environment that filters out as much external stimuli as possible, allowing them to concentrate solely on their tasks. A foundation of radical transparency and trust within the workplace is crucial for team members to feel comfortable in their work environments.Making Your Office a Home Away from Home With a shift toward activity-based design, giving employees a choice of where to work within a workspace is essential. Depending on their needs for the day or even the hour, they should be able to select an environment that best supports their current task. Designing specialized spaces ensures that each space is optimized for a specific type of work. Nurturing the Human Aspect in DesignOne of the key trends Rebecca discusses is creating neighborhoods within the workspace. By fostering a sense of community within each neighborhood, employees feel a sense of belonging and pride in their area. Personalizing the space further enhances this sense of ownership, giving employees a connection to their surroundings.Bringing Humanity to WorkplacesThinking about the workplace as a space to nurture the human mind opens up a whole new realm of possibilities. Incorporating soundscapes, pleasant scents, and elements that trigger positive memories can significantly impact an employee's mood and overall well-being. Space designed with elements of relaxation and comfort can help prevent burnout, fatigue, and keep employees engaged and inspired. Final ThoughtsRe-imagining workplaces through design is a compelling and innovative approach towards building more collaborative and nurturing work environments. By prioritizing employees' well-being and leveraging the potential of well-designed spaces, companies cannot only boost their bottom line but also foster a community of inspired, dedicated, and happy employees. Empowering Industry Podcast - A Production of Empowering Pumps & Equipment
This week Charli has Kerby Pope on to talk about his journey.Kerby attended a local technical school immediately after high school for study of design drafting with a concentration on Architectural Design. With hopes of landing a career working for an architectural firm that concentrated in high end residential design and then use the proceeds to pay for college at night and earn a bachelor's degree. The timing was bad as during the late 80's and early 90's the housing market was off and very little activity was taking place with residential construction. Instead Kerby worked as a mechanical drafter for a couple of manufacturing companies. The first was designing hollow metal frames and doors for prisons and then a company that manufactured phone booths. Both of which led to being laid off. Kerby then actively sought employment for 3 months when he applied for a design drafter position at Patterson Pump Company.Kerby began his career at Patterson Pump Company as a drafter. After working in that position for approximately 2 years, a job was posted for a Test Technician. After accepting the position, Kerby decided to take advantage of Patterson's tuition reimbursement program and completed college and earned his bachelor's degree in business administration in 2000. He was then offered a position in International Sales that same year and accepted then began in sales at the start of 2001.Kerby was able to teach Patterson representatives and customers a lot about what makes their products superior to other manufacturers and what their capabilities were in the factory. Patterson was able to greatly improve sales in the Middle East for 4 consecutive years. Kerby was then offered the International Sales Manager position in 2005. In the position Kerby applied the same mentality used in the Middle East to increase Patterson's presence in the Far East, South Africa, and Latin America. In 2018 the position of President/General Manager of Patterson was opened to applicants of Patterson Pump. Kerby applied and went through the interview process with Patterson's corporate owner, The Gorman-Rupp Company. In May 2018 Kerby was selected to be the next President/General Manager for Patterson Pump Company. Kerby served as Executive vice president under Patterson's then President, Al Huber until his retirement at the end of 2019.Kerby officially began his journey as President and General Manager on January 1, 2020. Two months later the world began down a crazy and uncharted path with the Covid pandemic. Kerby adds that since then “the experience has been priceless”. “It is truly unique to live and manage a manufacturing business in a time that has not been experienced before.” Read up at EmpoweringPumps.com and stay tuned for more news about EPICFind us @EmpoweringPumps on Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram and Twitter and using the hashtag #EmpoweringIndustryPodcast or via email podcast@empoweringpumps.com
