I feel that I got an up close and personal invitation into the life of a female pioneer who because of her own accomplishments, worked alongside other fearless women who broke through barriers. So when your mother sets the bar super high, what do you do?  One follows suit apparently. And that's exactly what Andrea Ippolito has done. As I mention in my introduction, she has a very impressive background. Both mother and daughter are engineers and their lives/personalities are very much intertwined or "tangled" as Andrea says. In this episode you'll hear stories of Mary working with female astronauts redesigning the first female space suit so it's anatomically correct for a woman. That's something significant that never crossed my mind until I heard these stories. Andrea says that her mom is still an inspiration to her. "Mom raised us to stick up for ourselves" recalls Ippolito. Andrea says her mother was always there for her, she encouraged her to experience different things and situations. Mary says, "she taught me that we need more women innovators at the table designing the next generation of women's health products with their own lived experience whenever possible." Splinter Parties and the Global Shadow Guest: David Pietrusza Book Title: Roosevelt Sweeps Nation: FDR's 1936 Landslide and the Triumph of the Liberal Ideal Beyond populist insurgents, Roosevelt had to contend with the Socialistand Communist parties, which held significant sway in urban centers. The Socialists, led by Norman Thomas, appealed to the intellectual "proto-faction" in New York City, drawing hundreds of thousands of votes. More complex was the role of the Communist Party USA, led by Earl Browder, who was hand-picked by Stalin for his compliance. Under Stalin's"Popular Front" strategy to combat Hitler, the Communists shifted from attacking Roosevelt as a "tool of Wall Street" to offering a deceptive endorsement. Browder realized an open endorsement would be the "kiss of death," so the party ran its own campaign while focusing its firepower on Roosevelt's opponents. This radicalism extended to the Midwest with the Farmer-Labor Party, led by figures like Minnesota Governor Floyd Olson. Olson, a radical agrarian who also harbored presidential ambitions for 1940, presided over a volatile political climate where political violence was not uncommon. These movements reflected a "different political geography" where radical agrarianism and urban socialism threatened to peel away parts of the Democratic electorate. Roosevelt remained wary of these factions, particularly in New York and California, where they were most active. Internationally, the brewing Spanish Civil War and the rise of European dictators added urgency to the domestic political landscape, as the Communists sought to keep Roosevelt in power as a potential ally against fascism. As the middle child of five, Ping experienced a lot of family pressure and political pressure as she was raised in China during The Cultural Revolution from 1966 through 1976. Enduring tremendous upheaval, it took a toll on Ping and her family. Perhaps because of Ping's past, she found it in her heart to stand up against society and family. Ping was there for her daughter at a number of crucial life changing events. She deserves a lot of credit for believing in her daughter and her daughter's behavior, when culturally it was frowned upon.  In one particular situation that you'll hear about in the interview  Leslie says "my mom's lack of response saved me." So many lessons to learn from two women, very similar personalities yet a generation apart. Leslie shares that she knew at a young age that she wanted to leave China and go to college in the United States and it was her mother who stood in front of thousands and advocated for her daughter and didn't succumb to the intimidation. Today, Leslie is a mom and business owner. She  is not a doctor, yet after her own experience of weight gain and years of studying and research, she now is able to help others with their food obsession. Her philosophy incorporates current day reasonings as well as Chinese traditions to reprogram your relationship with food.  "It's rather a lifestyle and a kind of mindset and routine which can help you loose the weight effectively without being addicted to this weight loss game," suggests Chen.   One of her suggestions for curbing further cravings for sugar is, "Teassert." My guest, Kristina, was fortunate to have at least two significant female role models in her life. One being her mother and the other, her maternal grandmother, Lucia, who was the more compassionate one. As the oldest of three children, Kristina felt that her mom was hardest on her.  She shares wonderful stories of cooking delicious Italian food with her mom, everything from scratch  and loves having all the family recipes. Her mother was very talented and creative, very charismatic yet her mom didn't believe in herself, didn't have the same confidence that her daughter has.  "She was an amazing seamstress, made all their Communion dresses and gowns."  Unfortunately, Linda Marie "suffered from  a lot of anxieties and narcissism as well and it would affect her and make her really insecure," reflects my guest. As an adult, Kristina has been in therapy and it's helped her to start her healing process.  This has been a difficult journey however, Kristina  has come to understand and appreciate that "her mom was doing the best with what she had.  She was working to  be the best version of herself every day." Lucia also shares with us her beautifully crocheted -Curiously Created Creations-Bella and friends.  Lucia's mom always wanted her daughter to be a teacher. Now, Kristina has created these darling children's books and stuffed animals "to help children process their feelings and help them navigate through their range of emotions. "These books are love letters to my mom. I think it's important to acknowledge the trauma, it's important to see the dysfunciton, but the healing is equily as important because it's showing that we do have a choice. My mom's choice was to raise the best kids she could possibly raise." Her main character of the series is Bella Lucia.  The mission of the series, explains Kristina, "is communication between parents and children. I like to  focus on that because when we're able to identify through our feelings and communicate with each other, we're able to acknowledge it and get down to the why." A U.S. trademark is valuable, but it does not automatically protect your brand around the world. That is the big lesson in this article on international trademark protection, and it catches many founders and small business owners by surprise.In the United States, a federal trademark registration can support enforcement, licensing, investor diligence, marketplace complaints, and brand credibility. But trademark rights are generally territorial. Your U.S. registration usually protects you in the United States, while other countries and regions have their own trademark systems, rules, fees, deadlines, and enforcement standards.For a business planning to sell internationally, manufacture abroad, launch ecommerce campaigns, franchise, license, distribute products, or attract overseas customers, this matters quickly. A brand can become visible in another market long before the founder has thought through trademark protection there. Unfortunately, copycats, competitors, opportunistic distributors, and local filers may notice that visibility too.The article explains two common paths for protecting a trademark internationally. One path is filing directly in individual countries or regions. This can be useful when a company needs a customized local strategy, expects objections, or wants local counsel involved from the beginning.The second path is the Madrid Protocol, a centralized filing system that allows eligible trademark owners to seek protection in multiple member jurisdictions through one international application. It can be efficient, but it is not a single worldwide trademark. Each designated country can still examine the mark under its own laws and issue refusals, oppositions, or limitations.That distinction is important. The inaugural Climate Week Zurich in May opened with a stark assessment of the health of the planet: Internationally recognized scientist Johan Rockström told the audience that the Earth has transgressed seven of nine Planetary Boundaries, pushing the planet toward the possibility of large scale and irreversible changes.   Johan is Director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research and helped develop the Planetary Boundaries, a framework that assesses nine critical global processes that regulate the stability and resilience of the Earth. In today's episode of the All Things Sustainable podcast, Johan talks about the planet's health, the impacts of a warming world, and what this means for the business community.   "Beyond 1.5 [degrees C], science shows we may cause irreversible damage to the Earth's system," Johan says. It was a pleasure to speak with Jessica and listen as she shared  all that she experienced as a high school drop out and single mother with a husband behind bars.   This major turning point in her life,  motivated her to complete her GED as well as complete college and law school, with honors, in order to help those similarly unfamiliar with the way the criminal justice system works.  When you hear the compelling stories about both  Jessica and her mother, you'll say, 'the fruit doesn't fall far from the tree.'   Both women have been working tirelessly for decades in order to educate victims and their family members,  as well as inform  society to be more compassionate and aware and to update the parole and probation system. Resilience is one of the words that Jessica uses over and over again when describing her mother Maria who is originally from  Stockholm, Sweden.  Jessica also describes her mom as "a pioneer in her field." Very early on in the AIDS epidemic, Maria was involved with helping patients and their families maneuver the scary waters of a frightening disease.  While in graduate school, Maria brought her days old daughter Jessica with her to class.  Jessica went where ever her mother took her, to HIV/Aids conferences, seminars, etc. "She showed us"  says Jessica, when referring to her mother, "by her actions, not her words, on how to live life." Jessica was adamant about how her mom had a "show them, don't tell them" philosophy about life. In other words, Maria was an  example by her actions, not her words. Jessica reflects, "I never once saw my mom give up." Again, the parallels between mother and daughter are striking, Maria working with HIV/AIDS patients and Jessica with people in prison. Again, those whose lives were turned upside down, found a smart, caring and devoted women to make a difference in these unfortunate individuals lives. When Kim Kardashian West wanted tutoring in law once aware of wrongfully incarcerated first time offenders, she went to Jessica Jackson for help.  On November 29, 2019, USA Today wrote "Kim Kardashian West came on board with the campaign after she heard about Alice Marie Johnson, a grandmother who had served 21 years of a life sentence for her first-ever drug conviction, and was moved to help. Kardashian West was instrumental in convincing Trump to grant Johnson clemency. "  That's just one of thousands of cases that Jackson has had overturned and continues to fight in order to get families back together under one roof. Both of these women with all that they have accomplished and continue  to accomplish is living proof that if you set your mind to something, anything and everything is possible. A native of Climax, Saskatchewan, Desjardins began his coaching career at the University of Calgary under George Kingston before eventually taking over as head coach of the program. After a decade behind the bench in Calgary, he headed overseas to coach in Japan before returning to Alberta in 2002 to lead the Medicine Hat Tigers, quickly establishing the club as one of the WHL's premier programs. Desjardins later joined the Dallas Stars organization as an assistant coach and went on to guide their AHL affiliate, the Texas Stars, to a Calder Cup championship. From 2014 to 2017, he served as Head Coach of the Vancouver Canucks and also spent the 2018-19 season behind the bench of the Los Angeles Kings. As host of SHLTMM, I wanted you to know that this episode of my podcast contains some graphic or sensitive content that some may find disturbing. Gregg's podcast, "The Compulsive Storyteller" which can be found where ever you listen to podcast, is Gregg continuing the art of telling stories handed down from past generations. Worth a listen for sure. (Link is below.) When Gregg was a little boy the family had moved to the Albany, New York area. Betty owned a plane, so who better to fly with his mom on a regular basis. He loved seeing the landscape from way up in the sky. It was quite an experience for a little boy. They'd go out to lunch and fly from one location to another. Gregg really cherishes his memories of his mom. Gregg's parents were apparently too similar personalities to make a good match according to Gregg. When Betty was checked out of  the WASP at the end of WWII, she received a job offer as the first ever female flight controller at LaGuardia Airport. Her husband sent her a telegraph ordering her to go back to buffalo and wait for him and not to take the job. Gregg shares a few very telling stories about his mother's experience in the military. Unfortunately a strong, talented, fearless  women had a  tough time in a male dominated industry such as the military. Gregg often says, "she was a woman ahead of her time." Betty flew an AT-6 which was considered the best fighter training aircraft during WWII, P38 Fighter Bomber and more. Over the 32 years that Gregg knew his mother, he laments  "she never once said 'I'm sorry,' nor did she say so to my sisters or my father. That was a real disability she had.  She was very proud."  Unfortunately, Gregg's maternal  grandmother held onto grudges similar to his mother. Anyone who went against his grandmother, they also were crossed off the list forever. Being in the military was not always easy, the most challenging  was when confronted by misogynistic men. That happened on a regular basis. Unfortunately, the harassment continued after the military while working in the real estate business. "A woman who was strong and decisive and stood up for herself was basically a difficult woman," Gregg explains out of frustration. Unfortunately, Betty LeFevre, even with all her accomplishments,  was more unhappy than anyone  could have understood.  * About Gregg In His Words I'm a public artist with permanent commissions around the world, a passion for the art world, entrepreneurship, multiculturalism, & stories. Kathryn was born in the Himalayas. However, both her parents were English and had the same desire of "going out to India, spreading the Gospel message and serving the poor," explains my guest. Living in Vienna as a young girl, Kathryn remembers her parents taking in refugees who were seeking political asylum and it was normal to have refugees sleeping on their floor regularly. These memories had a profound effect on Kathryn and she was certain that this is how her interests in helping the less fortunate  came to be.  Kathryn shares that her mother was not warm and fuzzy but she was from the generation of tough and strong women. Kathryn always felt very loved. Ruby was a teacher and taught her daughter and other children from the Embassy. Ruby was determined that Kathryn would not be spoiled. Kathryn was soon sent to boarding school because her parents were working and traveling regularly. "A little pencil in God's hand" is how Mother Teresa would refer to herself. She never wanted credit  or accolades for her work. "She could be a tough cookie," Spink reflects however, "she was difficult to deal with sometimes, because God was so definitely on her side and that could make things tough. Mother Teresa was so determined, nothing could get in her way." "Poverty saddened Mother Teresa the most according to Kathryn,  "I don't think it angered her not in relation to God. Waste most likely angered her the most but never with God." Mother Teresa was always seeing the presence of God in the poor and it helped her persevere.  "Tolerance was deeply ingrained in Mother Theresa" explains Ms. Spink. "Mother Teresa believed that God was at work in every soul, so it wasn't up to her to try and convince others of the 'correct/best religion." My guest remarks "Mother Teresa used to say "come to Calcutta and I'll put you to work".  This is what this demure but mighty  woman believed with her whole body, mind and spirit. Kathryn even shared stories of the similarities between Mother Teresa, whose birth name was Agnes, and her mother Drana. "The family that prays together, stays together" was one of Drana's favorite expressions according to Spink. Caring for the sick was a common thread for the two woman.  "It's not always about the physical suffering, but the whole process of being abandoned by people" was one of the toughest things for Mother Teresa to comes to terms with, comments Spink. Mother Teresa founded the order, "The Missionaries of Charities." She wanted to give shelter to  abandoned babies and to help the poorest of the poor. In 1979 she received the Nobel Peace Prize and after her death was canonized as Saint Teresa.  I could have listened for hours to my guest share her stories of all of these selfless women. Mother Teresa was known as 'Mother' because when a nun/sister is appointed to a superior position within  the church, they are known as 'Mother.' With the World Cup about to kick off, we're taking a fresh look at one of our lessons on business English idioms related to football. What do you call an activity where groups of people compete strategically against each other as they strive to be the winner? I mean an activity with a clear goal where success requires strong teamwork and a commitment to excellent performance? Some of you might be thinking about sports. Some of you might be thinking about business. Well, you're both right. There are so many obvious similarities between sports and business, it's no wonder that we see the language of sport come into play in the corporate world. And there's a particular type of language that we're going to focus on in this lesson, called idioms. Just like the expression “come into play,” which means to be involved or to be a factor in something. Now when I say “football,” I'm referring to the game with the round ball that players kick into a net past a goalkeeper. It's what North Americans tend to call “soccer,” to differentiate it from their own game of football, which is a whole different ball game altogether! Internationally, football – or soccer – is the most popular sport in the world. So it's no wonder it has inspired so many idioms commonly used in business. In the dialog, we'll hear Karl and Marilyn, two friends who work at a publishing company. Karl is thinking about applying for a job at the company's Sydney office. Christen Horne refers to herself as a nerd, geek and gamer. She's a big fan of reading and loves Star Wars. As an accomplished singer, she received her Masters in Opera Performance. In addition to the entire family being singers and musicians, archery became a big part of their lives as well.  When Karla, Christen's mother, was in high school she became the California State Champion Archer and the family still enjoys the sport today.  Having a mom that worked wasn't that unusual for Christen. Her mom had been a paralegal for years after completing her associates degree.  As the three children were growing up, Karla was  leading worship at the local church.  They spent a lot of time at the church. But my guest says she enjoyed it because they were always singing. Ms. Horne fondly remembers her mom embracing whatever fun activities the kids would be involved in, including  going to water parks and going down the water slides together, playing board games and spending quality time involved with the family. Years ago, Christen was actively involved in her community theatre programs.  She fondly retells the story of  the production of  "Fiddler On The Roof," when her mom and aunt  were  "volun-told' that they  had to play village fathers.  There were no other boys/male actors to play the part.  They still laugh about it today. Christen considered her mother as being firm yet compassionate when it came to disciplining the three kids.  Homework definitely took the priority especially over video games. Homework wasn't done, no one got  to play. Christen says  "mom was always really good about helping us find the balance in things. Making sure we had time to play  and making sure we got our homework done."   It wasn't until Christen started to realize  that she often hid her emotions, that she started to recall other instances from her childhood that were clearly  unhappy. She had suffered from depression at a young age that was left undiagnosed. She felt that her mother was embarrassed when Christen showed her true emotions. Horne shared with me that "through my mental health journey, I've gotten more comfortable being more myself around my mom."  Often feeling "this is my fault," Christen often blamed herself and felt that if her mother rejected her, it would be devastating.  It's scary to be a young child and not understand complicated emotional situation. Working with coaches on a regular basis has helped Christen tremendously. "You pick one hurt, then move on to another," reflects Horne. Through working with her coaches she says her relationship with her mom is so much better and she's very grateful for all the support. Christen is now working on her fantasy book which features her main character 'Alkara' who's named after mother and who also is an archer. This October, I'm excited to welcome a remarkable guest whose work has helped countless souls all over the world rediscover the splendor hidden within the Christian vision of the human person. Yet Christ's gaze is unlike any other. He looks upon us fully, without turning away. Not merely at our virtues, but at our wounds; not merely at the face we present to the world, but at the soul beneath it.This Sunday the Church celebrates Holy Trinity Sunday, this strange and bewildering teaching that God is an eternal relationship at his very core and wants us to share in it. The heart of Christianity is not merely that man seeks God, but that God Himself has gone in search of man. From all eternity the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit have lived in a boundless communion of love, lacking nothing, needing nothing, yet desiring to share that divine life with us. And so the Son stepped down into the dark forest of our world, clothed Himself in our humanity, and walked our dusty roads that we might be drawn into the very life of the Trinity. Christ does not simply come to improve us morally, but to bring us home, to gather wandering souls into the blazing circle of divine love where the Father delights in the Son, and the Spirit binds all together in eternal joy. The Gospel, then, is the astonishing invitation that frail creatures like ourselves might one day participate in the very communion of God.
