Internationally, the early 1970s are filled with political upheavals and economic recessions around the world, so filmmakers capture the dizzying mood with bold and controversial films. We continue our exploration of cult cinema with Alejandro Jodorowsky's The Holy Mountain, one of the strangest but most unique and exciting films on our list. Among our topics of discussion you can expect us to interpret religious symbolism, debate animal deaths on film, and sort through the wild [alleged] life story of director Jodorowsky.Become a Patron on PatreonWhere to watch The Holy Mountain (1973)1974 NYT article on animal cruelty in filmWhere to watch The Phantom of the Paradise (1974)

Industrial Decarbonization Strategies at General Mills, with Daren Kaiser Ep #53

In this episode of Smart Energy Voices, host John Failla talks with Daren Kaiser, Global Energy Strategy Leader - General Mills, at the recent Distributed Energy Forum. They discuss the unique challenges related to General Mills' ambitious decarbonization goals and the tactics Daren is employing to deliver against its sustainability commitments, such as energy optimization and CHP solutions. Listen in to hear more about industrial decarbonization strategies. You will want to hear this episode if you are interested in... Daren's role at General Mills [02:29] How has General Mills' focus shifted? [04:06] General Mills progress and goals [08:18] 2020's business impact [11:41] Energy optimization efforts [12:44] The challenges of thermal-heavy plants [16:37] Evaluating a third-party energy service [19:37] What's next for General Mills? [20:57] Daren's role at General Mills The majority of Daren's work has been as a technical leader in several of General Mills' large sites across the country. He has had the opportunity to work in the utility infrastructure at each of those sites, so he's familiar with optimization. For the last three years, Daren has been in a corporate engineering role responsible for leading and supporting some of the optimization work for utilities at General Mills' sites globally. He's also led broader initiatives such as wind farms, solar, and other projects in the sustainability and decarbonization areas.  General Mills' decarbonization strategy Based on the profile and nature of General Mills' load, electrification isn't going to work for them right now. They're interested in CHP because it will directly offset the natural gas they have to burn. A setback they've seen is capital investments or having a high enough payback to attract their own internal capital. The fact that CHP is still based on fossil fuels is another area of concern. While it provides great efficiency, it's not a long-term solution for the environment. Right now, however, it's a more reliable option than just solar or wind because it can run all day and when it's needed. Over time, CHP would drive more decarbonization in today's environment than either solar or wind for the same megawatt design. General Mills is currently focused on continuing the optimization work using the Department of Energy's types of modeling. They'll continue to look at renewables to expand for their RE 100 goal. Internationally, they've not gotten to 100% yet. By 2030, they'll have that solved, whether it be solar or RECs. Daren hopes they'll be piloting CHP at some sites soon and expanding to others if it's successful. They'll also be monitoring what's happening in changes in technology and government incentives to see what direction there might be extra funding that doesn't exist today. Focusing on sustainability Industrial companies have had a challenging time establishing decarbonization strategies because so much of their emissions are generated from thermal loads. For a lot of businesses, energy optimization, utilities, and optimization were always about cost savings. However, in the last couple of years, General Mills has been placing higher importance on the sustainability and environmental aspects of this optimization work. Their renewed focus on sustainability isn't just to be a good corporate citizen but to make the planet a better place for everyone. Resources & People Mentioned General Mills: Purpose Better Plants | Better Buildings Initiative Connect with Daren Kaiser By email Daren.Kaiser@genmills.com Daren has more than 30 years of experience in manufacturing. He was named General Mills' Global Energy Strategy Leader in 2018. The company has announced a science-based goal to reach a 29% reduction in GHG emissions by 2025 compared to a 2010 baseline. Daren was Plant Tech Manager for General Mills from 1997-2017 in Buffalo, Cincinnati, Covington, GA, and Murfreesboro, TN. At 16, he met Jack Flanagan, guitarist for the seminal NYHC pioneers, The Mob. Starting out as a roadie, Christopher soon took on bass duties in 1985 when original bassist Jose Gonzalez left to join the HR band (legendary vocalist of the Bad Brains). Christoper recorded the album We Come to Crush with The Mob and played his first gig with teh Mob at CBGB's. Christopher toured with the Mob on and off for the next 35 years, usually as a 5-piece with Christopher on guitar and with Jose returning on bass. In 2012, the Mob released the single “Back to Queens / Thats It”, both written by Christopher and vocalist Ralph Gebbia. Christopher played his last gig with The Mob at Generation Records in NYC in the winter of 2017, before relocating to California. In the early 90's, Christopher recorded and toured with Juicemen, releasing 2 EPs produced by Sean Slade (Radiohead, Hole, Dinosaur Jr), and engineered by Dave Dominich (Lenny Kravitz). In California, Christopher started the Monk & The 66 project. Initially starting as demos, the project began to take shape during 2020, and in 2021, Christopher Monk released the first Monk & The 66 single, Isolation Station. He quickly followed up with “Riding with the Ghost”. Taking on an obscure Allen Toussaint single from 1966, Christopher reworked and released Omar Khayyam which crystallized the Monk & The 66 sound with tight grooves. scratchy guitars, deep bass lines, topped of by Christopher's gravelly vocals, bringing to Tom Waits or Robbie Robertson. Having seen Dr. Christiane Northrup in many great joint presentations with other great doctors I have had the privilege to meet, and watched some of her own videos she has posted on her site, it is obvious to me that she is one of the great lights in the medical world that has not gone along with the industry as a whole in its plunge into the criminal insanity that is masquerading as normal. I have been waiting, as patiently as possible, for Dr. Northrup to get a chance to come on our show. I knew when she did, it would be an incredible discussion we would all enjoy. For those in our audience not already familiar with her work, Christiane Northrup, M.D. (www.drnorthrup.com), is known as a visionary pioneer and a leading authority in the field of women's health and wellness, which includes the unity of mind, body, emotions, and spirit. Internationally known for her empowering approach to women's health and wellness, she teaches women how to thrive at every stage of life. To me, and I think to most of those who get to hear her speak, she is a great source of wisdom for men as well. Dr. Northrup's many great books, along with an array of embedded videos, can be found on her website. Specific health products she recommends can be found at her site as well. Dr. Northrup has also appeared on several videos on non-censoring platforms with her brave colleagues, Dr. Palevsky, Dr. Tenpenny, Dr. Madej, and Dr. Merritt, as "The Five Doctors, telling the truth about the fake "pandemic" and the deadly vaccine, and offering suggestions for how to maximize immunity and stay healthy in an environment of all kinds of man-made toxins, including those being injected into the bodies of many of our families and friends.

Internationally-acclaimed linguist Andrew Lapidus makes his second appearance on Ramble by the River and he does not disappoint. He gives us that trademark Lapidus wit as he explains the recent unemployment scare that almost became a deportation, along with some stories that he didn't plan to talk about, regarding the skeletons in his closet, and he mentions J.K. Rowling way, way less than last time. On this epic two hour masterpiece Jeff and Andrew traverse a variety topics, exploring the human experience, across a range of emotion so broad, yet somehow still so deep. You'll hear Andrew's review of Apple's most popular accessories, and periodically Jeff will try to convince Andrew of the promise of NFTs and cryptocurrency. You'll hear Andrew question the morality of billionaires, and Jeff whine about the loss of once-abundant natural resources. This was a fun episode to make and I really like the way it turned out. Andrew is a hilarious guy with a brilliantly sharp and witty mind. You are not going to want to miss this one. Ramble by the River is for entertainment only. Is a BDSM dungeon on your sexual bucket list? You might be surprised about how actual dungeons operate. In this episode, the Wives explore public BDSM dungeons, including an interview with Dungeon East owner Mistress Justine Cross.  First, get ready for Halloween with this episode's cocktail: the Black Widow, while Ams shares her first experience as a unicorn to another couple.  Next, the Wives discuss what a dungeon is and why you might want to visit one.  A BDSM dungeon is a room or space designated specifically for BDSM (i.e. - Bondage and Discipline, Dominance and Submission, Sadism and Masochism) play or scenes. Public dungeons can be found in fetish studios, sex work spaces, sex clubs, warehouses and nightclubs (sometimes during specific fetish parties and themed nights) and are usually open to the public. A dungeon is a great place to explore kinkier, edgier play, surrounded by people who LOVE to demonstrate their skills.  You can learn, you can watch and you can experience kink including spanking, flogging, bondage and suspension.  You can also experience toys and equipment that you might not be willing to invest in at home, such as St. Andrew's cross's (Ams' favorite!), hooks and bars or suspension play, spanking benches and impact toys.  To get an expert's opinion, the Wives interview Mistress Justine Cross, owner of Dungeon East in Los Angeles, California.  Finally, the Wives set themselves sexy homework: visiting an actual dungeon for newbie night...and more… About Mistress Justine Cross she/her Mistress Justine is a professional BDSM consultant and lifestyle Dominatrix based in Los Angeles. Talking with Carinne was like talking to a kindred spirit in the world of women's health. She always knew that she wanted to follow in her mother's footsteps, as both an entrepreneur and an advocate for women's health. After graduating university, she joined forces with her mother to develop the DivaCup, a modern redesign of a concept from the 1930's. They started Diva on a shoestring budget from their kitchen table. Challenging a male-dominated industry, their product was often rejected as an unwanted threat to disposables. Nineteen years later, DivaCup has taken menstrual cups mainstream and disrupted the industry. The DivaCup is now sold in over 40 countries. Internationally, Diva has sold over 6.5million DivaCups to date. Carinne is a highly sought-after speaker and panelist, joining conversations all around the world on the state and future of the menstrual care industry. She has won multiple awards for her entrepreneurship and innovation, including EY's Entrepreneur of the Year, RBC Canadian Women Entrepreneur Awards Woman of Influence of 2019, and was named Canada's Top 40 Under 40.Our conversation took us from: How she became an entrepreneur in the period cup businessWhat were some of her struggles in being a female founderWhat was it like working with her mother as her partnerWhat was it like to carve out a new product in the women's wellness spaceHow she got involved in the menstrual equity movementBeing a mamma and an entrepreneur what does her idea of balance look likeHer inspiration for other busy working moms and women in not only being healthy for themselves but also for their childrenAnd lastly her personal health why and her personal wellness routineFollow her on these social Handles: Instagram: @carinnedivacup Twitter: @CarinneChambers LinkedIn: Carinne Chambers-SainiSend me a DM on the gram @wellwomennetworkAre you subscribed to my podcast?
