Beginning at a young age, Brenden felt compelled to become an accountant in order to relieve his parents of their financial burden. Now he's the founder of MasterTalk where Brenden refers to himself as "a public speaker, communicator and facilitator." Brenden is the first in his family's lineage to complete higher education.  My guest currently lives in Montreal Canada where he purchased a home for he and his mother in order to eliminate two mortgages. Culturally, as the first born, he had inherent responsibilities, including being very protective of his mother. Unfortunately his father, who passed away in 2019, was affected by  alcoholism and made things challenging around the home.  Both parents worked hard as factory workers, but just couldn't make ends meet. Brenden, who says, he was always good with numbers, studied accounting and got great jobs out of college and was eventually able to pay off all outstanding debt. Brenden admires and loves his mother tremendously. He says, "my mother has a very different life now than what she struggled through in the last ten years. Culturally, "you don't just walk away from your partner or family member who is struggling. You continue to support them and provide for them.  My #1 priority was making sure everyone was safe," says Brenden. Sri Lanka, is an island country located in South-Central Asia, and Brenden shares stories of both his parents who grew up in Sri Lanka. His mother is the youngest of a large family and she loved to tend to the family garden.  She married at 30 years old and immigrated to Canada.  His mother taught her son many wonderful life lessons including  his story that he shares about the $10 bill he found on the ground. Vijee hoped that her son understood that " even if we don't have a lot, we have a lot more than other people do and always be generous and lead with that generosity." After years of studying to be an accountant, then technology consultant, he was able to shift into doing what he really loved. He felt all of his steps in life where important. "That first step was absolutely necessary to get to the person I am today." Kumarasamy continues, " I got out of survival mode later in life and started to focus on the bigger picture of what I could do to serve the world" Brenden's Youtube channel is full of wonderful videos with professional advice for improving ones public speaking skills. He is self taught and wants everyone to understand that it wasn't easy in the beginning. He practiced hundreds of times before he felt he was ready. He was very fearful of launching that first Youtube video. Newsham highlights that over 600 million Chinese citizens live on less than $5 a day, and even the CCP elite, including Xi Jinping, keep wealth overseas as a hedge against the system's future. He argues that China's high-tech focus on AI and robotics does not solve its massive youth unemployment. Newsham concludes that China is a "big power but not a great one," functioning as a "rigged casino" without property rights or the rule of law, which is increasingly deterring foreign direct investment. My guest was born in Ukraine then moved to Russia with her family. At 16, Natasha felt the need for some sort of spiritual connection in her life.  Neither her mother or father believed in traditional religious beliefs, so she started attending services in different temples and churches. But it wasn't until she met Rachelle, that my guest was encouraged to find her own calling. Rachelle did not  persuade Natasha to do anything specific in life, yet there was a mutual interest in caring for children who did not have families of their own. "Mom never allowed me to shy away from the challenges," says Chantal who refers to herself as a neurodiversity advocate. At a young age, Chantal's mom picked up that that her daughter's learning abilities seemed  off.  It was clear that Chantal's behavior at home didn't reflect correctly with her report cards.  Chantal struggled in school, in part due to her learning difficulties plus the social pressures from her piers and bullying. But again, it was Yvonne who continually encouraged her daughter to "not worry about it. You'll always run your own business." Chantal wishes she had seen her mom's sensibility earlier on instead of putting more pressure on herself to tackle fields of study that were  too rigorous,  ie, sciences and graphic design. According to my guest,  "my mother taught  me how to manage and look out for my burnout." One of the most important messages that Chantal wants to get across is " no one should ever be ashamed of the tools  or the accommodations  they need because of neurodiversity disabilities." Now, starting her own business has lessened the pressure on Chantal. SOCOLO came about because of the difficulties she had when reading and focusing on words specifically on white paper or causing 'visual stress.' "50% of the people with Autism and 50% of the people with Dyslexia also have visual stress or Irlin Syndrome. So white paper doesn't quite work with our group. Vivace is a very bright woman who received her undergraduate and graduate degree in Biology from Cornell University. She worked in the medical field for twelve years before becoming  a speaker and life coach. My guest explains that "my mother was my BFF and she lives for her children." This was all terribly hard because Vivace always wanted her mother "to feel  valued and honored yet she was at the bottom of everyone's totem pole." Unfortunately, the abuse toward she and her mother started when Vivace was very young and continued until both women left the family, leaving behind the two sons as they chose to remain with their father. Yet, Vivace recalls asking her mother on a regular basis  "can we leave today, can we leave today" but it was years before they left.  From a young age, Vivace would confront her father verbally about the abuse, but her bravery came with a price.  With $100 in their pocket, both women left the horrific beatings behind and found shelter with family members who unfortunately knew of the abuse, but never came to Jaleh's rescue. Through many years of depression, pain, anger, resentment and a planned suicide,  Vivace began her healing process through therapy, research and seeking the truth.  She uses her past experience as a tool to help her clients improve their self worth and confidence through compassion and understanding. I feel that I got an up close and personal invitation into the life of a female pioneer who because of her own accomplishments, worked alongside other fearless women who broke through barriers. So when your mother sets the bar super high, what do you do?  One follows suit apparently. And that's exactly what Andrea Ippolito has done. As I mention in my introduction, she has a very impressive background. Both mother and daughter are engineers and their lives/personalities are very much intertwined or "tangled" as Andrea says. In this episode you'll hear stories of Mary working with female astronauts redesigning the first female space suit so it's anatomically correct for a woman. That's something significant that never crossed my mind until I heard these stories. Andrea says that her mom is still an inspiration to her. "Mom raised us to stick up for ourselves" recalls Ippolito. Andrea says her mother was always there for her, she encouraged her to experience different things and situations. Splinter Parties and the Global Shadow Guest: David Pietrusza Book Title: Roosevelt Sweeps Nation: FDR's 1936 Landslide and the Triumph of the Liberal Ideal Beyond populist insurgents, Roosevelt had to contend with the Socialistand Communist parties, which held significant sway in urban centers. The Socialists, led by Norman Thomas, appealed to the intellectual "proto-faction" in New York City, drawing hundreds of thousands of votes. More complex was the role of the Communist Party USA, led by Earl Browder, who was hand-picked by Stalin for his compliance. Under Stalin's"Popular Front" strategy to combat Hitler, the Communists shifted from attacking Roosevelt as a "tool of Wall Street" to offering a deceptive endorsement. Browder realized an open endorsement would be the "kiss of death," so the party ran its own campaign while focusing its firepower on Roosevelt's opponents. This radicalism extended to the Midwest with the Farmer-Labor Party, led by figures like Minnesota Governor Floyd Olson. Olson, a radical agrarian who also harbored presidential ambitions for 1940, presided over a volatile political climate where political violence was not uncommon. These movements reflected a "different political geography" where radical agrarianism and urban socialism threatened to peel away parts of the Democratic electorate. Roosevelt remained wary of these factions, particularly in New York and California, where they were most active. Internationally, the brewing Spanish Civil War and the rise of European dictators added urgency to the domestic political landscape, as the Communists sought to keep Roosevelt in power as a potential ally against fascism. As the middle child of five, Ping experienced a lot of family pressure and political pressure as she was raised in China during The Cultural Revolution from 1966 through 1976. Enduring tremendous upheaval, it took a toll on Ping and her family. Perhaps because of Ping's past, she found it in her heart to stand up against society and family. Ping was there for her daughter at a number of crucial life changing events. She deserves a lot of credit for believing in her daughter and her daughter's behavior, when culturally it was frowned upon.  In one particular situation that you'll hear about in the interview  Leslie says "my mom's lack of response saved me." So many lessons to learn from two women, very similar personalities yet a generation apart. Leslie shares that she knew at a young age that she wanted to leave China and go to college in the United States and it was her mother who stood in front of thousands and advocated for her daughter and didn't succumb to the intimidation. Today, Leslie is a mom and business owner. She  is not a doctor, yet after her own experience of weight gain and years of studying and research, she now is able to help others with their food obsession. Her philosophy incorporates current day reasonings as well as Chinese traditions to reprogram your relationship with food.  "It's rather a lifestyle and a kind of mindset and routine which can help you loose the weight effectively without being addicted to this weight loss game," suggests Chen.   One of her suggestions for curbing further cravings for sugar is, "Teassert." My guest, Kristina, was fortunate to have at least two significant female role models in her life. One being her mother and the other, her maternal grandmother, Lucia, who was the more compassionate one. As the oldest of three children, Kristina felt that her mom was hardest on her.  She shares wonderful stories of cooking delicious Italian food with her mom, everything from scratch  and loves having all the family recipes. As an adult, Kristina has been in therapy and it's helped her to start her healing process.  This has been a difficult journey however, Kristina  has come to understand and appreciate that "her mom was doing the best with what she had.  She was working to  be the best version of herself every day." Lucia also shares with us her beautifully crocheted -Curiously Created Creations-Bella and friends.  Lucia's mom always wanted her daughter to be a teacher. Now, Kristina has created these darling children's books and stuffed animals "to help children process their feelings and help them navigate through their range of emotions. "These books are love letters to my mom. I think it's important to acknowledge the trauma, it's important to see the dysfunciton, but the healing is equily as important because it's showing that we do have a choice. My mom's choice was to raise the best kids she could possibly raise." Her main character of the series is Bella Lucia.  The mission of the series, explains Kristina, "is communication between parents and children. I like to  focus on that because when we're able to identify through our feelings and communicate with each other, we're able to acknowledge it and get down to the why."
