I got involved in competition BBQ back in the late 90', cooking with several teams. As a result, I became very interested in building competition smokers. Hence Pit O' Heaven was born. We built trailer mounted smokers from 2000-2004. My oilfield career became so busy that the competition BBQ and smoker building came to a halt. My desire to for competitive cooking was still burning inside. A good friend of mine got me involved in the SCA. Pam and I absolutely fell in love with it. We have traveled to Australia to compete and competed right on the beach in the Bahamas. Pam and I decided to create our own seasoning recipes for competition. As a result of these efforts we debuted of our PitGrit Seasonings Line to the public in March of 2021. The brand has been very successful on the SCA and BBQ competition trails around the world. Steve is a natural as a host. He found his passion for the radio business at the age of six, but wasn't able to fulfill that dream till a little later in life.   As you listen to the wonderful stories Steve shares,  you'll find out that he was raised by both his maternal grandmother and his mom.  "Grandmother was worthless until a crisis. Grandmother was my mother, my light. 'Mother', as he refers to his mom, was my 'dad'-the two women set up  those 'roles'," McCurdy shares. You'll hear Steve repeat over and over again how magnificent his mother was -"a powerful, independent woman with a great, great mind, yet she wanted to be wild and crazy and she never really got to do that." Plus, Margie never went to college because any money the family  had went to Margie's brother's wants and needs. Margie started working in a local bank  in Texas at 16 and because of her expertise, hard work and dedication over decades of running the Proof Department, she was able to apply for a  program through Southwest Institute Of Graduate Business Studies and SMU. Because she had never gotten and undergraduate degree, she was able to take an exam, passed the test with flying colors, got her undergraduate degree certificate based on her lifelong experience and the exam and became the first person to ever complete a Masters program at SMU without having actually attended college. There is more to this story  as it was taking place in the late 60's and the Civil Rights Movement. Steve's mother made a considerable effort to train the other female employees and not just overlook them because she knew they were intelligent and capable to do any job if trained properly. There's so much more to Steve's story. Robert Crutchfield is the founder of Crutchfield Cooks Food Blog and host and producer of Crutchfield Cooks Podcast.  Robert Crutchfield is the eldest of three children and  my guest shares that they really had their mother to thank for helping them understand the significance of sibling relationships -they generally loved one another, again thanks to his mother.  On the other hand, Robert says, "I loved my mother, but my mother was scary." She worked for the Director of the FBI, J Edgar Hoover , during the Korean War. And she didn't hesitate to say what was truly on her mind.  Robert loves that his mom was an "avid reader and she desperately wanted to be a writer." She was  a little jealous that Robert was getting paid to write. She attended business school, but never completed her degree.  Don't think that that was going to hold her back in any way.  Marilyn was determined to stay home with the kids when they were small, even though it was a financial struggle.  She began teaching her daughter how to cook and then she was determined to teach her two sons, because "she'd be hell bent if any son of hers starved because he didn't know how  to turn the stove on, " Robert recalls fondly.  Proud of both his parents, Robert was determined  to share that his parents were a pair/teammates. They worked together raising the kids and they supported one another always. Robert attributes his cooking  prowess to his mother, but also his paternal grandfather. He's been fortunate to have generations of chefs in his lineage. "I learned most of my early knowledge of cooking and food from her,"Crutchfield offers.  "It was intimidating to me," says Robert as he was learning and meeting professional chefs. Yet he found that his mother had taught him some of the same techniques, just not a fancy name. Robert admits to 'reinventing himself' many times over and each journey has played a significant role in his life and what he's achieved in his life. Rob truly enjoys writing his food blog-tweaking recipes after trial and error. He believes that he wants to hold his bar very high. Beginning at a young age, Brenden felt compelled to become an accountant in order to relieve his parents of their financial burden. Now he's the founder of MasterTalk where Brenden refers to himself as "a public speaker, communicator and facilitator." Brenden is the first in his family's lineage to complete higher education.  My guest currently lives in Montreal Canada where he purchased a home for he and his mother in order to eliminate two mortgages. Culturally, as the first born, he had inherent responsibilities, including being very protective of his mother. Unfortunately his father, who passed away in 2019, was affected by  alcoholism and made things challenging around the home.  Both parents worked hard as factory workers, but just couldn't make ends meet. Brenden, who says, he was always good with numbers, studied accounting and got great jobs out of college and was eventually able to pay off all outstanding debt. Brenden admires and loves his mother tremendously. He says, "my mother has a very different life now than what she struggled through in the last ten years. Culturally, "you don't just walk away from your partner or family member who is struggling. You continue to support them and provide for them.  My #1 priority was making sure everyone was safe," says Brenden. Sri Lanka, is an island country located in South-Central Asia, and Brenden shares stories of both his parents who grew up in Sri Lanka. His mother is the youngest of a large family and she loved to tend to the family garden.  She married at 30 years old and immigrated to Canada.  His mother taught her son many wonderful life lessons including  his story that he shares about the $10 bill he found on the ground. Vijee hoped that her son understood that " even if we don't have a lot, we have a lot more than other people do and always be generous and lead with that generosity." After years of studying to be an accountant, then technology consultant, he was able to shift into doing what he really loved. He felt all of his steps in life where important. "That first step was absolutely necessary to get to the person I am today." Kumarasamy continues, " I got out of survival mode later in life and started to focus on the bigger picture of what I could do to serve the world" Brenden's Youtube channel is full of wonderful videos with professional advice for improving ones public speaking skills. He is self taught and wants everyone to understand that it wasn't easy in the beginning. He practiced hundreds of times before he felt he was ready. He was very fearful of launching that first Youtube video. My guest was born in Ukraine then moved to Russia with her family. At 16, Natasha felt the need for some sort of spiritual connection in her life.  Neither her mother or father believed in traditional religious beliefs, so she started attending services in different temples and churches. But it wasn't until she met Rachelle, that my guest was encouraged to find her own calling. Rachelle did not  persuade Natasha to do anything specific in life, yet there was a mutual interest in caring for children who did not have families of their own.
