In this episode we wrap up the wonderful EQUITANA Australia VIP Super Ticket Holder events with Pedro Torres and Emma Booth.I have introduced Pedro in the 1stepisode of this series, so go back and have a listen to more about this Portuguese Working Equitation and Dressage star. Emma Booth is Australia and she is our international representative para equestrian. Emma is one person I’ve wanted to interview for a long time and I was lucky enough to do a full interview one on one with her at EQUITANA, it happened right before we recorded this VIP event. Emma’s solo interview will be up next week so tune in for that one.Emma rode in Pedro’s Masterclass at EQUITANA, it was so beautiful to watch. Pedro had a deep respect for Emma’s ability to ride and he also was as grateful as Emma was for the opportunity. So Emma was thrilled to be coached by Pedro and Pedro was thrilled to be able to watch Emma ride so close up in a Masterclass. You can hear the deep respect they have for each other. While at EQUITANA I also came across the team from Dolly’s dream. Following the tragic death of Northern Territory teenager Amy “Dolly” Everett on January 3, 2018, Tick and Kate Everett, Dolly’s parents, decided to establish Dolly’s Dream to create positive change and as a lasting legacy to their daughter, Amy. Who committed suicide after being bullied both in person and on the internet.I wanted to support the charity and buy a shirt to wear at EQUITANA, they had sold out of my size, so a Woman washed hers and brought it back for me the next day to wear to the VIP event. This is why you hear me ask the question about adversity. If you’d like to know more about this charity and show them support, please follow the links in the show notes or on my blog. Here is how you can connect with the guestsPedro Torres - Website, Facebook, Instagram, YouTubeEmma Booth - Website, Facebook, Instagram, TwitterEQUITANA Australia - Website, Facebook, Instagram, TwitterDollys Dream - Website, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter

In this week’s episode I’m thrilled to bring you day 3 of the EQUITANA Australia VIP super ticket holder sessions where I was the MC for the event. In this episode you will hear from Vicki Wilson from New Zealand, Vicki competes at the highest level of show jumping, she starts horses and also does Equine Therapy, by that I mean body work for horses. In my opinion Vicki is changing the way people all over the world, see horses with what they consider to be bad behaviour. In 2017, Vicki Wilson was the first New Zealander to win the coveted World Championship colt starting competition at the Road to the Horse in the USA. Vicki named her horse Kentucky and brought him home. Their journey is an inspiring story of a friendship which will take them together into the future, this story you can read on Vicki’s website. Vicki went on to win the Road to the Horse 2018, making her the back-to-back World Champion of Colt Starting.Vicki has a load of firsts at The Road to the Horse, but the one I personally love the most, is that she is the first person to ever use body work on their colt. That’s the change she is making to the world of horse people, she shows them how you can take a difficult horse to being quiet and responsive by understanding them and alleviating any pain they are feeling. On this panel there is also Dave Manchon from The Rooftop Express Show, David has an incredibly entertaining show that he wows audiences with all over Australia, I saw him and his team a few years ago at the local show and it was lots of fun, his show at EQUITANA is next level entertainment, if you ever get a chance to see them please do yourself a favour and get there. In his spare time he is a professional horse trainer with his business flex horse training. With David on this panel is his little sidekick Bella Southern who is 9 years old and also his long-time mate and also a part of his show Anthony Cootes. These guys are a lot of fun but don’t be fooled, they are very experienced horse people in their own right and have a lot to give to those around them. This is another great day and the thanks has to go to EQUITANA Australia for putting on a great event and allowing me to be a part of it. And also, allowing me to record these sessions and share them with you. Here are all the links you will need to get in touch with these guestsVicki Wilson - Website, Facebook, Instagram, YouTubeDavid Manchon - Rooftop Express Show on Facebook, Instagram, Flex Horse Training FacebookTo see pictures of the day please go to my website www.comealongfortheride.com.au/blog

This week’s episode is another gem from the 4 days at EQUITANA Australia 2018 where I was the MC for the VIP super ticket holder event. This one is a cracker! On this day I was lucky enough to have Chris Burton who is one of Australia’s best eventers of the modern times. He represented Australia at the 2010, 14 and 18 World Equestrian Games, the London 2012 Olympic Games and the Rio 2016 Olympic games where he won a bronze medal on his young horse Santano II.Stacy Westfall the super decorated western rider is back again. Her bio is in the previous episode so go back and have a listen to the last episode if you’d like to know more about her. Then, there are the Double Dans from Double Dan Horsemanship. Dan Steers and Dan James who conduct clinics all around the world and are also great entertainers. Their show includes horsemanship, trick riding, comedy and a whole lot more. This is one of the moments I will not forget and I will tell this story for years to come. This is the day where one of the top equestrians of the modern times, learned something from a couple of Aussie Cowboys. This shows a strength in Chris Burton and a humbleness to be open to this kind of learning especially in front of a live audience. It also show that no matter who you are, you have value.Another massive thank you to EQUITANA Australia for giving me the opportunity to MC this event and also record it and broadcast it to you all.To see pictures of the day you can go to the blog on my website. How to connectChris Burton – Website, Facebook, InstagramStacy Westfall – Website, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTubeDouble Dan Horsemanship – Website, Facebook, InstagramEQUITANA Australia – Website, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter

This episode is a little bit different. If you follow me on social media, you will know that I have just spent 4 days at EQUITANA Australia. And I was there to be the MC of the VIP Super ticketholder events. The first event I was fortunate enough to interview Stacy Westfall and Pedro Torres. For anyone who does not know who that is, I’ll give you a bit of the intro from EQUITANA’s program. Stacy Westfall is one of the US’s top clinicians and competitors. She is a specialist in reining but rides most western disciplines. It would take me a long time to list all of her achievements, so I’ll name just a couple, in 2003 she won the National Reining Horse Association Freestyle competition where she performed without a bridle. She went on to win major reining freestyle competition riding bareback and bridle-less. I do also have to tell you how Stacy was the first woman to enter and win, the prestigious Road to the Horse colt-starting competition.Pedro Torres is a world champion Working Equitation specialist who trains using classical Dressage principles and by establishing a respectful and kind relationship with his horses. His name is synonymous in Europe with harmonious classical horse training. It’s a wonderful opportunity to be able to interview people like Stacy and Pedro who are world class in their chosen discipline. It’s so lovely to speak to two people who do different disciplines, and who have more in common that you would think, and it’s lovely how they have so much respect for each other.A massive thanks to EQUITANA Australia for allowing me to record and broadcast this interview here for you all. Here are all the links that you will need to connect with each guest and EQUITANA.Come Along for the Ride Website blog with photosStacy Westfall Website, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTubePedro Torres Website, Facebook, Instagram, YouTubeEQUITANA Australia Website, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter

This interview is with Dr Tauri Simone an Aboriginal woman who has spent years writing a thesis on Aboriginal Stockwomen; Their Legacy in the Australian Pastoral Industry. Tauri is not only an incredibly well-educated woman, she is also a stockwoman, who lives in the outback of western Australia on a property that is 1.3 million acres. She musters cattle, no longer on horseback, but she used to. She lives a privileged life compared to the women she writes about. In this interview you will hear how it is for a stockwoman now and how it was for those who came before her. It’s a fascinating story for any horse lover to hear how these women trained and rode horses to round up cattle and jump off their horses and spear tackle cattle! Taurie is a brave woman choosing to tell this story, her legacy is that she is telling the story as something for aboriginal people to be proud of. She leaves out most of the atrocities as the trauma does not need to be opened again, but the story of these unbelievably resilient and capable women, must live on.I believe, this is the type of story that we need to keep telling to begin the healing of colonialism and to move forward as one people. To read Dr Tauri Simone's full paper you can go to this link and download the pdf and have a good read. please have a read, let's all keep these stories that matter circulating so they can't be lost. This episode was brought to you by EQUITANA Australia.

In this episode I speak with Callie King from CRK Training. Just like so many other trainers I’ve interviewed on this podcast, Callie wanted to find a better way to do things after the experience she had with a difficult horse. So today I wanted to first of all, pay tribute to those horses, the ones who are on the frontline of absolutely stubbornly refusing to respond in any positive way to old training methods of domination and negative reinforcement, they are forcing us to make the changes we need within the horse industry to be kinder, more gentle and truly connected to our horses. I’m sending a big thanks and lots of love to those stubborn and apparently unable to be trained horses, and also to the trainer, like Callie who have listened and not given up.Callie has a wonderful story of how she took the time to learn as much about behaviour as she could, will all different species, to find a better and kinder way to train horses. She found mentors along the way and as a young person, is yet another leader for her generation of teaching humans how we can go deeper with our horses and have the kind of relationship that we have previously only dreamed of.To connect with Callie and her incredible online learning programs you can go to her website. Tanya uses the Alexander technique which I have heard about before but never took the time to understand. It fits completely with the values I love to promote on this podcast. It works to find the root cause of the problem and then gives the body an opportunity to do things differently. It requires empathy and sensitivity. It is gentle and profound.Tanya found this technique for herself after her own serious health issues that affected her balance. She now teaches it to humans and horses giving them balance and a deeper connection with their horse. This work is a collaboration between horse and rider where the horse can tell you where you need to adjust your body to give them better movement. Whether they are retired, never made the track at all or have just had enough and don’t want to race anymore. The best part about this program and what Harness Racing Australia are doing, is that they can start to gather real stats about where their horses are going that are being registered for racing. This is sorely missing from all areas of the equestrian world, knowing how many horses are leaving the industry and where they are going. The wastage is sports like Thoroughbred racing are evident, but the statistics are floored at best. This organisation is making inroads into making the world a better place for all Standardbreds.
