Struggling with unbalanced, rushed, or messy canter transitions? You're not alone. And the good news is, it doesn't have to stay this way. In this episode of Strides Revisited (from 2020) of the Daily Strides Podcast for Equestrians, I'm sharing 3 practical steps you can implement on your very next ride to dramatically improve your canter transitions. Whether you're riding alone in a back paddock or schooling in an arena, these simple mindset and position shifts will help you plan better, ride with more clarity, and finally allow your horse to move freely into the canter. This is a must-listen for any rider who has ever felt like they were catapulted into canter… or worse, ended up rushing into it with no balance or connection.

The more the merrier :) Ask any rider what they want to make happen when it comes to their riding aids and, hopefully, creating truly independent aids will be high up there on that list. Because, let's face it, your aids can only be as clear and useful in direct relation to how independent they are. But saying you want independent aids and working towards developing independent aids are two very different things. Especially when, as a whole, your aids are almost always used in conjunction with each other - not independently on their own... And yet, for each aid to become a useful member of your team of aids, I believe that you should first isolate each one and develop it intentionally and individually. Having one 'strong' independent aid when the rest are flapping about won't be enough to create clear conversations with your horse. Each aid must be strengthened in its own right and then be allowed to contribute to the overall team effort. Make sure that you're on my newsletter list to get more on this topic and so, so much more for riders who are working the majority of the time alone with their horse... https://stridesforsuccess.com/newsletter Have you ever considered how different it could all be if you could open up more as a rider? Specifically around how, physically in the saddle, if you could expand yourself a little bit more, the difference it could have on your riding. And your mindset. Even your horse's way of going... Over the past few months, I have been running an in-person program on my farm South Africa based on Connection and Groundwork. It has been such an amazing experience working with all these different riders We focused specifically on energy work, and becoming more aware of how we can intentionally use this to connect with our horses. It was so much fun. And, it got me thinking about riding and how so many riders are blocking the kind of flow with the energy in their riding, especially with their physical body. So, in this week's episode of the Daily Strides Podcast, I would love to walk you through a few simple exercises you can do, from the saddle, to begin to identify where you are, potentially, contracting as a rider. Join Daily Strides Premium TODAY and get all 4 exercises straight to your phone https://stridesforsuccess.com/dsp If there is one place where the ‘endless circle' reigns supreme, it is in the small arena… Or any smaller space riders find themselves having to make use of for prolonged periods. In fact, this was the very reason I began the Daily Strides Podcast way back when! Saying a lasting, even final, 'Goodbye' to the endless circle should be a goal that all riders want to achieve... Especially if riding in a smaller space! However, having a smaller area is not as limiting as many riders think it will be. In fact, riding in a smaller space can often help both you and your horse to become more focused and accurate. And these are always useful and helpful when you finally do move out and begin riding in a larger space. This month I want to challenge you to look at those same ‘limitations' as opportunities for you to develop and build your conversation with your horse instead. Exercises for a Smaller Space This week's episode of the Daily Strides Podcast is the 'Monday Lesson' of a week of audio horse riding lessons from Daily Strides Premium. In this group of lessons, we work on 4 different exercises that you can ride to develop and train your horse when in a smaller space. So you're back in the saddle. It feels amazing and you love how each ride is jam-packed with learning new things and rediscovering little things you'd forgotten. However, once the initial excitement begins to wear off, you'll probably start thinking about how to improve your skills. Self-assessment is a skill all riders can practice and improve. And it is essential if you want to improve your riding – and your horse's overall way of going. The challenge can be knowing what to look for. Being able to identify the root cause of an issue from a symptom of something else. This takes practice. Here are a few things to look out for in those initial rides to create a solid foundation for your comeback to riding. I want to begin by reminding you that you can start this process at any time throughout the year. The date is not important. Planning out the upcoming year in your riding will help you to get really clear on what you and your horse are working towards together. I also suggest taking the time to complete a review of the previous 12 months if this applies to you. This way, you can begin creating a plan that actually works for you and your horse. It should be a great time and there will be plenty to do besides trail riding. Please listen until the end, as a few facts changed between recording and releasing this one, so corrections are at the end.https://laequinecouncil.com/

I know it’s been a while and I’ve been irregular on posting podcasts, so thank you so much for hanging in there with me. I’m back now and will be posting this new episode today, then I will do weekly playback of our most listened to episodes, then another new episode in a month then some more favourite episodes and then the following month I will get back into new weekly episodes. It’s time to dive back in and keep making the world a better place for horses! If you’d like to support the podcast and all the work that I do then you can! Just head on over to patreon.com/comealongfortheridepodcast and sign up. From as little as a cup of coffee a month, you can help me keep this podcast going. There are many tiers that you can choose from and if everyone who listens gave only $5 per month, it would make a massive positive difference to me. There is a tier in there for a small business subscription just like the one Peter Papp took up from Peter and the Herd, this is the one where your business gets a mention each week on the podcast. Peter works with equine behaviour and trauma recovery. Equine communication. Human and horse relationship building. Peter has had communication with my mare Gypsy, who is the mare with me in the podcast picture and he was spot on about everything so I can highly recommend his work personally. Click here to connect with Peter and the Herd. This weeks episode is with Dominique Day, Dominique has a business called Equiosity which she runs with Alexandra Kurland, who was one of the original people in the world to bring positive reinforcement training to the horse world. Together they do a podcast called Equiosity as well as online courses and webinars. Dominique was one of the creators of Cavalia and it’s a wonderful story to hear about how it all began, but it is certainly not the most interesting part of her story. She has had a wonderful progression from watching more traditional methods of horse training into positive reinforcement. Keeping strong with her gut feeling and knowing there must be a better way, you may very well be able to relate to this very closely. You are going to love this story as much as I did recording it.Dominique Day on FacebookEquiosity website where you will also find the Equiosity podcast.
Hi everyone, it’s wonderful to be back in your ears again. A huge Happy New year to you all, may this new decade bring joy and love and abundance to us all.First I’d like to say thank you to our Patreon subscribers. As it’s a new year I want to shout out to all of you. So a big thank you to Amanda Phillips, Amy Lopez, Belinda Daws, Elisa Mansfield, Kathryn O’Bree, Liz Ehrich, Peter Papp, Rachel Beddingfield and Signe of Horses. You all mean the world to me and I am so grateful that you are on this ride with me literally. Please remember our small business patrons. Belinda Daws is an incredible Connection Training Coach who is calm, confident and incredibly skilled, Belinda can help you with training your horse just like she has helped me with mine. I can highly recommend her beautiful coaching work.A huge shout out to our other small business patron Peter Papp from Peter and the Herd. Peter has just had to evacuate his beautiful herd due to bushfires where he is living. His community came together to help out and it was so beautiful to watch as they all worked to get his horses to safety well before the fires got close.Peter does with equine behaviour and trauma recovery. Equine communication. Human and horse relationship building. I had a reading myself with Peter and I found him to be completely spot on with his insights. It’s a great way to support him through these bushfires and trying times is to support his business. You can find the links to both Belinda and Peter in the show notes. You may remember from the last episode my life is in a bit of turmoil at the moment. At the end of last year I separated from my partner and Oliver and I are staying with my sister down in the Riverina in NSW for now until we can get some finances together to get back to Qld and start a new life. I’ve learned an enormous amount in the last few months about other people not behaving in the way you do. I thought we could separate and have an adult conversation and divide assets and work to both thrive and move on through a difficult time. I was very very wrong. Even though I am going through a steep learning curve, Oliver and I are very safe, safe from harm and safe from the fires raging in Australia at the moment. We drove about 1500km from Qld down to the Riverina along the coast and I saw the devastation from the fires first hand. The fires had crossed highways and burned so much land, it was black for about 30km with small patches of green where they had worked so hard and saved houses in the middle of these catastrophic fires. We were nowhere near the fires as we travelled but the smoke was everywhere. There were no days travelling when I did not wake to be reminded of the destruction happening to people, animals and especially the native animals that were unable to flee.In Australia now people have just got into action to help horse owners get the supplies they so desperately need. If you are in Australia please check with your local Vet, produce store or Horseland, these are a few who are taking donations for horse people and shipping them to those in need.I have also set up a gofundme page for Horse Owners Affected by Australian Bushfires. I will put the link in the show notes. https://www.gofundme.com/f/horse-owners-affected-by-australian-bushfires?utm_source=customer&utm_medium=copy_link&utm_campaign=p_cp+share-sheetKnow that every dollar you give will go directly to horse owners in need. As we reach our goal of $5,000 I will get the funds to where it is needed and it will be completely transparent. Then we can set about raising our next $5,000 and so on until we have done all that we can for horse owners who have been through this devastation. I would be donating profits of my own business to the cause but I’ve had to shut the business down as I’m so far away and unable to run it at this time. So if you have been to the site and wondering why everything says out of stock, it’s simply that I am not able to function it at this time. But know that I will be back, and this is going to be an amazing year for us all. A new year, a new decade, although things are difficult for so many, I still feel that we will come together and make it amazing. In all that has happened so far this year to me and those in the bush fires here in Australia. I wanted to start this years podcast with a truly inspirational story. Now I know that, like me, your blood may very well boil at how this horse went blind. However, what I have learned in the past few months of what I have been through personally is that you can’t live your life looking backwards into the past and expecting change, anger at the past gets you absolutely nowhere. It keeps you locked into the past and unable to see into and manifest the future that your heart truly desires. So take a few deep breaths through that part then allow your heart and mind to be opened by the amazing story of Ashlyn Dyer and her beautiful horse Wintara Cadence or as she calls her Cady. Cady is a blind horse who Ashlyn now takes out to dressage shows. It is such a beautiful and inspirational story and I hope you get as much out of this story as I did. Link to Ashlyn's Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/Wintara-Cadence-Cady-1537936826339698/Belinda Daws’ website is journeyequine.com and you can find her on all the usual social Facebook, Instagram and twitter. You can find Peter Papp from Peter and the Herd through his Facebook page Peter and the herd or his Instagram by the same name.

In this episode I speak with Paul McGreevy Professor of Animal Behaviour and Animal Welfare Science. If you’ve ever had a difficult conversation with traditional horse people and you’ve wondered how your training methods and beliefs can be backed up by science, then listeners, this is the podcast for you!Paul has spent 23 years scientifically researching horse behaviour and welfare in both the UK and Australia. He has published 250 peer reviewed papers as well as books on equine and dog behaviour and he is the co-founder and honorary fellow of the International Society for Equitation Science. He also talks in this interview of his 8 weeks trek on horseback from Victoria to Canberra. So he is not a desk bound scientist, he is a real horseman who has a passion for equitation science and debunking myths that are out there around some methods of training.I believe it’s important for us as conscious horse people to keep up to date with this kind of science so we can have real conversations with people who think we are all a bit woo woo in our methods. Paul tell me where and how we can access this information and also how we can be a part of the new study they are doing where they are collecting data from all over the world that will help revolutionise horse training the world over.To connect with Paul you can follow the link belowWebsite http://sydney.edu.au/vetscience/about/staff/pmcgreevy.shtmlHere are links to some of the research papers we spoke about in the interviewFood reward and pressure and releasehttps://www.researchgate.net/publication/233588289_The_use_of_blended_positive_and_negative_reinforcement_in_shaping_the_halt_response_of_horses_Equus_caballusTrigger Treater:https://www.triggertreater.com/Cath Evans work with shape of head in dogshttps://www.researchgate.net/.../6436933_The_Distribution_of_Ganglion_Cells_in_the_...Donkey v horse brainhttps://www.researchgate.net/publication/331083791_Preliminary_investigation_into_relationships_between_donkey_and_horse_skull_and_brain_morphologyPaul's equine behaviour bookhttps://www.elsevier.com/books/equine-behavior/mcgreevy/978-0-7020-4337-6ISES, conference links on position statementhttps://equitationscience.com/equitation/position-statement-on-the-use-misuse-of-leadership-and-dominance-concepts-in-horse-trainingHere are some other research papers of Paul's that you might like to readMcGreevy, P, Boakes, R. Sarah works in the field of Trauma and Somatic Experience with both those who work in the field of Equine Assisted Therapy, and also horse owners, where she can teach more about trauma, what it is and give you the tools to notice it and find your way through for both you and your horse. In the last episode I spoke with Anna Collis who works to release trauma from horses herself, in this episode, Sarah and I go deeper into what trauma is and how it can be released from the body using different methods and how you can become a real expert on your horse and their nervous system to assist you in building a deeper connection to your horse through understanding their nervous system needs.I love that there are so many people working with trauma now and that it’s not some big scary word that sends us all into a spin, it happens and when we continue to talk openly about it, we can find ways through it for both ourselves and our horses. So sit back, feel the love and support of this community around you, and enjoy the amazing Sarah Schlote. To connect with Sarah follow any of the links belowWebsite https://equusoma.com/Website https://sarahschlote.com/Facebook https://www.facebook.com/equusoma/LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/sarahschlote/
In this episode I speak with Anna Collis from harmony for Horses. Anna can be called a body worker, but she also supports the release of trauma and locked emotions from you and your horse through a type of therapy called “The Emotion Code”.By now you will all know why body work is so important, Anna and I speak in this episode about the types of very real traumas that most horses in the world have. Some of them may very well surprise you? And some of them may not! It’s a great conversation to help you think a lot more from the horse’s perspective on many things to do with emotions and trauma as well as body work. We talk about how trauma gets trapped in the horse’s body, and how Anna is able to release it, with the horse’s permission of course. I hope you find this one interesting, I know I did.To connect with Anna please follow the links belowWebsiteFacebookInstagram
In this episode I speak with Hannah Weston and Rachel Bedingfield who created Connection Training. They are a mother and daughter team who have both learned so much of their craft from the one horse, Toby.Connection Training is a Holistic look at horsemanship which I love so much, and I know you guys love it too. The knowledge between these two amazing women is profound. If you’ve ever wondered why positive reinforcement training is so important to the horses, and their brain, then this is the podcast for you.To connect with Hannah and Rachel follow the links belowWebsite: https://connectiontraining.com/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/connectiontraining/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCar_Ot7XNlQ4nZG56TS12TwInstagram: Connection Training (@connectiontraining) • Instagram photos and videos
In this episode I speak with Tara Davis from Unbridles Goddess. And apart from having the best business name I’ve heard of yet, it’s a bit amazing isn’t it? She also has a beautiful story to go with it. It has illness, recovery, a ranch that allowed her to experience horses in a different way and that one horse who changed her life and training methods forever.Tara is a beautiful story teller and I loved hearing all about her journey to conscious horsemanship. I know that you will too.To connect with Tara you can follow the links belowwww.unbridledgoddess.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/unbridledgoddess/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/unbridledgoddess/
Pat Turpening, a Masterson Method Certified Practitioner, joins us for our 9th episode on Late Night Riders. We dive in to what the Masterson Method is and how it can really help both you and the horse! Watch as Pat & Debbie discuss how important it is for your horse to release tension through the bladder meridian and work with Pat's horse, Ultras Executive Order, out in the barn here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xZT4aJaatCI
In this episode I speak with Farah DeJohnette. Farah runs a horse property in North Brookfield Massachusetts where she teaches people about Holistic or Whole Horsemanship, where it takes a village to keep your horse happy and healthy and everyone is as important as the next including nutrition, dental, body work and training methods.Farah is doing an amazing job educating people on all aspects of keeping your horse happy and healthy, but the most important thing we must all begin with, is listening to your horse.I recorded this at 5am my time so if you are wearing headphones you may hear the Kookaburras waking up and the butcher birds making their morning song, you may even hear my dog snoring in there somewhere. This is a long one, so I won’t take up too much of your time on the intro, I’ll let you settle in and enjoy the ride.To connect with Farah please use the following links.Website-https://fdhorsemanship.comFacebook-Farah DeJohnette HorsemanshipInstagram-#fdhorsemanshipYoutube-fdh channel
In this episode I speak with Dr Audrey DeClue from DeClue Equine LLC.You are about to hear from someone who is literally revolutionising the horse world and how they treat Shivers and Stringhalt in horses. Audrey sees herself as an ordinary person who is changing the world for horses. You can see why I love this episode so much and I’m sure you will too.The most important thing that stands out to me about Audrey is not all of her incredible education of which there is years of with incredible breadth in both western and eastern medicines, but it’s that fact that she has treated thousands of professional sport horses and do you know how many she has been unable to help? One, just one, and that one breaks her heart.Audrey is revolutionising the horse world, but she also needs our help, have a listen to see how you too might be able to support her on her mission. To support or connect with Audrey you can go to her website or you can listen to her podcast.
In this episode I speak with Jayne Roberts from Equijay. Jane is here to bring the feminine back to the horse world. What does that mean exactly? Well you will hear more about it in the interview but let me just say, that you know all the trainers who I have interviewed who are going deeper into giving the horses a voice and a choice and working as a collaboration instead of a dominance power play model of horsemanship? Well, that’s what Jane is here to teach as well, and it’s in her own unique and deep style.Jane’s knowledge of nutrition is extraordinary and her level of consciousness around the horses emotional state, and their nervous system and their ability to absorb nutrients, well it’s ground breaking.I’m so excited to speak to someone like Jayne and have her tell her story for you. Her 3 pillars plus her embodiment of the feminine plus her deep love for horses will hopefully help and support you to make the changes you possibly always thought about, or maybe never considered for your horse. Either way, the world is a better place for you opening up to what Jayne has to say.To connect with Jayne you can do so through herWebsite (this is under construction right now)FacebookInstagram
In this episode I speak with Hannah Pikkat from It’s Crunch Time. Hannah is 20 years old and is a serious influencer in the world of social media as you will hear her speak about in the interview. The amazing part about Hannah is the message she spreads to the world of hundreds of thousands of followers. It is one of kindness, positive reinforcement training, and building a long and lasting partnership with your horse in order to do great things together. I believe the word inspirational is used a little too often these days, but I can assure you that Hannah is the perfect person to be inspiring the next generation of horse people. Wisdom usually comes from age and experience and I’m not sure Hannah really understands the positive impact she is having on the world. However, Hannah is still a very wise young woman and one to take note of for the future. I for one will delight in watching her grow and see what more she goes on to do to make a positive difference to the horse world. To connect with Hannah you can find her at herWebsiteFacebookInstagramPersonal instagramYouTube
In this episode I speak with Alexa Linton. Alexa is what this podcast is all about, she is herself bringing consciousness to the horse world through all of her skills which include animal communication, equine sports therapy, kinesiology, BodyTalker, Author and teacher. But most of all, she is a student of the animals she loves. Hear how her life with animals and working with horses has come about, hear the depth of how far she goes with animals and humans and also hear about the courses she has put together that are incredibly comprehensive and something you may want to look further into. We are so lucky here on this podcast to have such a high calibre of interviews each week. It excites me to no end to think of all of you working with any one of these people to take your life with your horse more conscious and deep. For now, sit back, enjoy the ride and everything that the incredible Alexa Linton has to offer. To connect with Alexa, you can find her on herWebsiteFacebookInstagramTwitterThe Whole Horse Podcast
In this episode I speak with Cathy Mahon from Life Lesson with Horses. Cathy has a wonderful story of her life so far and how her many years in teaching have brought her to horses and assisting and supporting people in life lessons as a coach, using her herd to help people find their way in life and so much more.Cathy has an incredible list of skills in her toolbox, one of my favourites is the Centred Riding created by Sally Swift. She has also done some Alexander Technique, liberty horsemanship, dressage and women’s empowerment. She has attended more horsemanship clinics than I could possibly mention. Now Cathy uses all of her skill that she has acquired through her years of learning and education, to her passion, which is, being a teacher and allowing you to live the life of your dreams. To connect with Cathy you can go to her WebsiteNew WebsiteFacebookInstagram
In this episode I speak with Jini Patel and boy oh boy she is next level of consciousness in my opinion. As you heard in the snippet, she waits until all the things that we do with horses, are the horses idea!I know that when someone is talking, and I start to fidget and feel uncomfortable, that my buttons are getting pushed to a place I have been resisting to go. This happened during this interview. Jini pushed my buttons by the end of this podcast, and I mean that in the best way possible. The depth she has gone to with her horses made me so uncomfortable, simply because, I’m not ready to go there, yet! I will get there, I’m just not there yet. There is so much surrender that is needed so I’ll be taking it one step at a time. This is a long one, as you have probably come to expect from this podcast by now. So grab a cuppa or a glass of wine, enjoy the ride and immerse and challenge yourself in what the amazing Jini has to say.To connect with Jini you can go to herWebsiteYouTubeFacebookInstagram
In this episode I speak with Kate Neligan from Conscious Rockstar. Kate’s story is fascinating. She works with people and horses as a coach for humans to bring about their real self and to live the best life that they can. You’ll hear how horses have taught Kate so much and how she is now able to now support others in the lessons her horses taught her. Kate is a beautiful woman who is connected to all things ethereal and is deep. She is also a very clear communicator and owns every part of herself and lets herself shine. She really does embody her business name Conscious Rockstar.Oh and please keep listening after I say thank you to Kate as I go on to ask her another question about world domination by horses so keep on listening to the end so you can hear our thoughts! You can find Kate's links herewebsitefacebookinstagramyoutube
In this episode I speak with Adele Shaw from The Willing Equine. Adele is a horse trainer who works in a completely holistic way with horses. She teaches her clients that a horse needs a good environment, a good diet, a body that feels good and a human that is aware of their body language before even getting to how to train a horse. All this before even getting into the saddle. Ahhh imagine if all horses were afforded the same respect? This is an interesting conversation with a refreshing and skilled horsewoman. In every podcast I learn a lot for my own training and how to go about things and this is yet another moment where I am given information to be able to take my horses and to the next level. I really how it does the same for you.You can find Adele on her website, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube
Just a quick drop in to let you know where I was for the last part of 2018 and how I brought in the New Year with insights, totems and a very large Wombat!A bit about who you can expect to hear from in the coming weeks and more about my intention for 2019.And a big thanks for Coming Along for the Ride with me and hoping that 2019 is going to be bigger and better than ever as we strive to bring consciousness to the horse world.
In this episode I speak with Dr Anne Bondi, not only has she set up the saddle research trust but she also has had a really interesting life and career with horses. And in this episode we cover it all. If you’ve ever wondered about saddle fitting and what the research is and how far we have come and why it is so hard to find scientific proof of some things we may feel intuitively, then Anne may very well answer that for you today.Anne’s trust is working hard to have a voice for horses and she also strongly believes we should not blame the rider all the time when the saddle moves or we have an unbalanced horse. Nor should we blame the saddle when things don’t go right. They want to educate people of the intimate relationship of the horse the rider and the saddle and how to figure out what the problem really is. They are working to help people collaborate to bring the best information possible to each other in the research field so that we as horse owners and riders as well as obvious professionals in the field, can get the best evidence based information. And as it is on this podcast, it’s a nice long one so enjoy the ride.To connect with Anne you can go to her website. It's a quick one where I drop in to say thank you and read you some awesome things that people have sent to me over our first year of this podcast and I give you a little insight into next year. Have a safe and wonderful holiday season, I'll be in the snow in the north pole somewhere when you are listening to this, and get yourselves strapped in for an awesome and abundant 2019!!!
In this episode you will hear from Emma Booth who is a truly extraordinary human being. She has represented Australia at the Olympics and this year at WEG as a para equestrian.Emma has been at the forefront of my mind for an interview since I heard her story through another podcast so I was thrilled when she said “yes let’s do it tomorrow” at EQUITANA when I asked her for an interview. Some people might take pity on people who are not fully able bodied, or have been through the kind of trauma Emma has. I personally have a reverence for them. Especially Emma, she is strong and capable and sits with intention and will not be seen anything other than an incredible athlete in her own right, because listeners, that’s exactly what she is.I hope you can hear how extraordinary she is and that you enjoy this interview as much as I did.To connect with Emma you can find her on her Website, Facebook, Instagram, TwitterYou can also see pictures from the day on the blog on my website www.comealongfortheride.com.au/emma-booth-para-equestrian
In this episode we wrap up the wonderful EQUITANA Australia VIP Super Ticket Holder events with Pedro Torres and Emma Booth.I have introduced Pedro in the 1stepisode of this series, so go back and have a listen to more about this Portuguese Working Equitation and Dressage star. Emma Booth is Australia and she is our international representative para equestrian. Emma is one person I’ve wanted to interview for a long time and I was lucky enough to do a full interview one on one with her at EQUITANA, it happened right before we recorded this VIP event. Emma’s solo interview will be up next week so tune in for that one.Emma rode in Pedro’s Masterclass at EQUITANA, it was so beautiful to watch. Pedro had a deep respect for Emma’s ability to ride and he also was as grateful as Emma was for the opportunity. So Emma was thrilled to be coached by Pedro and Pedro was thrilled to be able to watch Emma ride so close up in a Masterclass. You can hear the deep respect they have for each other. While at EQUITANA I also came across the team from Dolly’s dream. Following the tragic death of Northern Territory teenager Amy “Dolly” Everett on January 3, 2018, Tick and Kate Everett, Dolly’s parents, decided to establish Dolly’s Dream to create positive change and as a lasting legacy to their daughter, Amy. Who committed suicide after being bullied both in person and on the internet.I wanted to support the charity and buy a shirt to wear at EQUITANA, they had sold out of my size, so a Woman washed hers and brought it back for me the next day to wear to the VIP event. This is why you hear me ask the question about adversity. If you’d like to know more about this charity and show them support, please follow the links in the show notes or on my blog. Here is how you can connect with the guestsPedro Torres - Website, Facebook, Instagram, YouTubeEmma Booth - Website, Facebook, Instagram, TwitterEQUITANA Australia - Website, Facebook, Instagram, TwitterDollys Dream - Website, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter
In this week’s episode I’m thrilled to bring you day 3 of the EQUITANA Australia VIP super ticket holder sessions where I was the MC for the event. In this episode you will hear from Vicki Wilson from New Zealand, Vicki competes at the highest level of show jumping, she starts horses and also does Equine Therapy, by that I mean body work for horses. In my opinion Vicki is changing the way people all over the world, see horses with what they consider to be bad behaviour. In 2017, Vicki Wilson was the first New Zealander to win the coveted World Championship colt starting competition at the Road to the Horse in the USA. Vicki named her horse Kentucky and brought him home. Their journey is an inspiring story of a friendship which will take them together into the future, this story you can read on Vicki’s website. Vicki went on to win the Road to the Horse 2018, making her the back-to-back World Champion of Colt Starting.Vicki has a load of firsts at The Road to the Horse, but the one I personally love the most, is that she is the first person to ever use body work on their colt. That’s the change she is making to the world of horse people, she shows them how you can take a difficult horse to being quiet and responsive by understanding them and alleviating any pain they are feeling. On this panel there is also Dave Manchon from The Rooftop Express Show, David has an incredibly entertaining show that he wows audiences with all over Australia, I saw him and his team a few years ago at the local show and it was lots of fun, his show at EQUITANA is next level entertainment, if you ever get a chance to see them please do yourself a favour and get there. In his spare time he is a professional horse trainer with his business flex horse training. With David on this panel is his little sidekick Bella Southern who is 9 years old and also his long-time mate and also a part of his show Anthony Cootes. These guys are a lot of fun but don’t be fooled, they are very experienced horse people in their own right and have a lot to give to those around them. This is another great day and the thanks has to go to EQUITANA Australia for putting on a great event and allowing me to be a part of it. And also, allowing me to record these sessions and share them with you. Here are all the links you will need to get in touch with these guestsVicki Wilson - Website, Facebook, Instagram, YouTubeDavid Manchon - Rooftop Express Show on Facebook, Instagram, Flex Horse Training FacebookTo see pictures of the day please go to my website www.comealongfortheride.com.au/blog
This week’s episode is another gem from the 4 days at EQUITANA Australia 2018 where I was the MC for the VIP super ticket holder event. This one is a cracker! On this day I was lucky enough to have Chris Burton who is one of Australia’s best eventers of the modern times. He represented Australia at the 2010, 14 and 18 World Equestrian Games, the London 2012 Olympic Games and the Rio 2016 Olympic games where he won a bronze medal on his young horse Santano II.Stacy Westfall the super decorated western rider is back again. Her bio is in the previous episode so go back and have a listen to the last episode if you’d like to know more about her. Then, there are the Double Dans from Double Dan Horsemanship. Dan Steers and Dan James who conduct clinics all around the world and are also great entertainers. Their show includes horsemanship, trick riding, comedy and a whole lot more. This is one of the moments I will not forget and I will tell this story for years to come. This is the day where one of the top equestrians of the modern times, learned something from a couple of Aussie Cowboys. This shows a strength in Chris Burton and a humbleness to be open to this kind of learning especially in front of a live audience. It also show that no matter who you are, you have value.Another massive thank you to EQUITANA Australia for giving me the opportunity to MC this event and also record it and broadcast it to you all.To see pictures of the day you can go to the blog on my website. How to connectChris Burton – Website, Facebook, InstagramStacy Westfall – Website, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTubeDouble Dan Horsemanship – Website, Facebook, InstagramEQUITANA Australia – Website, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter
This episode is a little bit different. If you follow me on social media, you will know that I have just spent 4 days at EQUITANA Australia. And I was there to be the MC of the VIP Super ticketholder events. The first event I was fortunate enough to interview Stacy Westfall and Pedro Torres. For anyone who does not know who that is, I’ll give you a bit of the intro from EQUITANA’s program. Stacy Westfall is one of the US’s top clinicians and competitors. She is a specialist in reining but rides most western disciplines. It would take me a long time to list all of her achievements, so I’ll name just a couple, in 2003 she won the National Reining Horse Association Freestyle competition where she performed without a bridle. She went on to win major reining freestyle competition riding bareback and bridle-less. I do also have to tell you how Stacy was the first woman to enter and win, the prestigious Road to the Horse colt-starting competition.Pedro Torres is a world champion Working Equitation specialist who trains using classical Dressage principles and by establishing a respectful and kind relationship with his horses. His name is synonymous in Europe with harmonious classical horse training. It’s a wonderful opportunity to be able to interview people like Stacy and Pedro who are world class in their chosen discipline. It’s so lovely to speak to two people who do different disciplines, and who have more in common that you would think, and it’s lovely how they have so much respect for each other.A massive thanks to EQUITANA Australia for allowing me to record and broadcast this interview here for you all. Here are all the links that you will need to connect with each guest and EQUITANA.Come Along for the Ride Website blog with photosStacy Westfall Website, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTubePedro Torres Website, Facebook, Instagram, YouTubeEQUITANA Australia Website, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter
In this episode I speak with Sandra Poppema from HippoLogic. And no, she does not work with Hippo’s! Her business name is rooted in her history and lineage and it beautifully reflects the work she does in helping horses, by helping their humans.Sandra, like a lot of us, knows that any issues with the horse can usually be traced back to us in some way, and that if she works on the confidence and self esteem of the humans as well as the thought processes in their training, then the horse will respond and perform differently as well.Sandra has a background in animal behaviour, she studied it at university level. It’s so interesting to hear what she learned and how she implements that into her work now.As a special treat for you, Sandra created a special coupon code "Comealongfortheride2018" this will get you get 50% off her eBook "Key Lessons, Your Key to Success in Positive Reinforcement Horse Training" which is valued $27 CAD. Here is the link https://clickertraining.ca/product/ebook-key-lessons-your-key-to-success-in-positive-reinforcement-training/If you'd like to get to know Sandra a bit better or are curious to experience what online coaching is and how it can help you, then why not sign up for a free 30 minute Discovery call with Sandra. Or you can sign up for her newsletter (same link) and get, a few times a year, free training templates, training tips and discounts nobody else gets. You will also find Sandra on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
In this episode I speak with Dr Lena Clifford from Animal Biomechanical Solutions. Lena studied veterinary science in her homeland of Germany, doing a doctorate there before coming to Australia to be with her now husband Darrell who is an extraordinary horse person in his own right. You will hear how Lena felt the vet world taught her scientific skills but there were holes to be filled, she found a teacher and mentor in Traditional Chinese Medicine TCM and her world changed forever.Lena will get you thinking, if you haven’t already, about why you rug your horse, at what age you might like to think of starting your horse under saddle based on science, how much support foals needs once it is born and so many other interesting topics. This is a insightful conversation and I’m so glad I can share it with you.To connect with Lena you can go to her website or Facebook. You can also go to the blog on my website to see photos of Lena with her horses.
It has taken me 31 episodes but I've finally taken the time to record my story so far. I've told this story a few times in the past weeks to various people so I thought I'd record it as an episode to save my voice from having to say it many more times! This is how my life began with horses. It is how I did my horse journey in the reverse order to most people and why that needed to be. It's about the reason I started this podcast and where we go from here.It also has a treat at the end where I share an email I received last week that lifted me up and I wanted to share it with you. It's the relatively short version of my life so far and it is definitely not the end of my story but I am glad I am able to share it with you.
In this episode I speak with Karine Vandenborre from Horsefulness Training. Karine has, over the years, put mindfulness and horsemanship together. The thing I love about Karine is that she has a breadth of experience in horses, and it’s her choice to always put the horse first and see what fits for them, that makes her a great trainer in my eyes. When I ask her about why she rides bitless, she says it’s simply because all the horses she rides prefer it that way. Even though she’s trained in biomechanics and could probably give me scientific reasons as to why she prefers to ride bitless, she still puts the horse first. I love this!Karine also had the chance to be anything she wanted when she was younger and her teachers and parents all tried to talk her out of working with horses. Can you believe it! Luckily for us, Karine followed her heart and we can now have access to her wisdom and online courses. To connect with Karine you can go to her website or Facebook page. You can also find Karine's 3 podcast episodes on her website.
I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the impact that we have on horses as their owners and riders and I wanted to highlight that in this episode. So I’ve gone back over the interviews I have done since the beginning of this podcast and I’ve selected what I believe are some pearls of wisdom. The main reason I want to do this is to get you thinking more about the impact we have on horses. Like I said before, I’ve been pondering it A LOT and wanted to open the conversation with you guys. As I know you are on the same path as me.This is about how we as a humans influence horses in their body and function. This is not even in our training methods or feed or where we house them so to speak. This is about us directly, how does our body and emotions effect the body and emotions of our horse. In this episode my intention is to not make it too long, not talk too much myself or go into my own story. These incredible horsepeople say it so beautifully, my hope is that these words will stay with you and really get you considering these things they speak of.Please let me know what you think. You can reach me on my website, Facebook, Instagram or Twitter. The trainers I have referenced from previous episodes are as follows. In this episode I speak with AJ Millions from Leading the Way International. AJ does one of my passions, she has an experiential horse facilitated learning centre. AJ works with people of all ages and from many different walks of life. Her experience in life is extraordinary. It began on a large ranch in Canada with her Grandfather, learning how she did NOT want to train horses. You will hear how AJ worked with first Canadian elders in a womens correctional centre where she assisted in an equine program to help rehabilitate women into society without reoffending and entering the cycle of corrections.AJ has worked with so many amazing horse people in her life so far, one of which was Ray Hunt when she was only 18.AJ has also been lucky enough to study with Linda Kohanov who brings such wisdom to any horse assisted therapy work.AJ’s passion is working with at risk youth and you will hear stories of how she facilitates change with her incredible herd, for these kids who do not fit the current education system.AJ also has a passion for making sure her horses are well taken care of in every way. Healing work can have a big impact on horses as well and we speak about the way Aj is able to care for her herd to make sure they do not have any negative responses or setbacks from this work as well.To connect with AJ you can go to her website or Facebook page. Here is a link to the book that she speaks of in the interview, written by Yvonne Johnson, one of the Women in the correctional centre in Canada.
This interview is with Dr Tauri Simone an Aboriginal woman who has spent years writing a thesis on Aboriginal Stockwomen; Their Legacy in the Australian Pastoral Industry. Tauri is not only an incredibly well-educated woman, she is also a stockwoman, who lives in the outback of western Australia on a property that is 1.3 million acres. She musters cattle, no longer on horseback, but she used to. She lives a privileged life compared to the women she writes about. In this interview you will hear how it is for a stockwoman now and how it was for those who came before her. It’s a fascinating story for any horse lover to hear how these women trained and rode horses to round up cattle and jump off their horses and spear tackle cattle! Taurie is a brave woman choosing to tell this story, her legacy is that she is telling the story as something for aboriginal people to be proud of. She leaves out most of the atrocities as the trauma does not need to be opened again, but the story of these unbelievably resilient and capable women, must live on.I believe, this is the type of story that we need to keep telling to begin the healing of colonialism and to move forward as one people. To read Dr Tauri Simone's full paper you can go to this link and download the pdf and have a good read. please have a read, let's all keep these stories that matter circulating so they can't be lost. This episode was brought to you by EQUITANA Australia.

In this episode I speak with Andrea Datz from Integrative Horsemanship. There is so much gold in this episode. I am so happy for you and your horses that you have tunes into this one. From learning to listen to your horse, to understanding the principles of dancing the Tango and taking them into your time with your horse, and to the beautiful gift that I received during this podcast, calmness.Andrea was so calm and clear I her communication throughout this podcast that after a night of barely any sleep, waking at 4am to record the conversation at 5am, no breakfast and a usually highly excitable nature, I felt calm and grounded by Andrea’s presence from the other side of the world! I hope you feel this too while listening to Andrea and the beautiful message she has to share. To connect with Andrea you can go to her website, Facebook page or you can follow her on her blog. In this episode I speak with Callie King from CRK Training. Just like so many other trainers I’ve interviewed on this podcast, Callie wanted to find a better way to do things after the experience she had with a difficult horse. So today I wanted to first of all, pay tribute to those horses, the ones who are on the frontline of absolutely stubbornly refusing to respond in any positive way to old training methods of domination and negative reinforcement, they are forcing us to make the changes we need within the horse industry to be kinder, more gentle and truly connected to our horses. I’m sending a big thanks and lots of love to those stubborn and apparently unable to be trained horses, and also to the trainer, like Callie who have listened and not given up.Callie has a wonderful story of how she took the time to learn as much about behaviour as she could, will all different species, to find a better and kinder way to train horses. She found mentors along the way and as a young person, is yet another leader for her generation of teaching humans how we can go deeper with our horses and have the kind of relationship that we have previously only dreamed of.To connect with Callie and her incredible online learning programs you can go to her website. You can also follow her on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. In this episode I have gone back over the trainers that I have spoken to in each previous episode and found the Top 5 Horse Training Tips. What I love about these tips is that they all have a similar focus. These trainers are from varied disciplines and from all over the world, yet their foundations are similar, their naming of it may be a bit different, the way they do it may be slightly different, but the intention and end result are all very similar. They all work with calmness and taking your time to build a strong connection with their horse. Here are the links to the trainers that I speak of in the podcast.Mosie Trewhitt from Liberty HorsemanshipKirsty Hagger from Willowvale Spanish MustangsEmma Bryant from Equality Equine ServicesValence Williams from Soul Horse RevolutionMel Fleming from Connecting with Horses, Riding with SynchronicityAnna Blake from Relaxed and ForwardDonna Anderson from One Horse Life Australia and New ZealandTo let me know of your training questions you would like answered please connect with me on my website, or through Facebook, Twitter or InstagramThis episode was brought to you by EQUITANA Australia. She has also written 4 books and coaches people all over the world in dressage, one of the amazing things Anna brought to the horse world is the awareness of calming signals. These are signals that we may take as disrespect or disobedience from our horses, when actually, it’s our horses way of asking us to calm down please, and let’s work this out together.I imagine that if everyone in the horse world understood these signals and listened to their horse in this way, then oh my, what a beautiful world it would be for horses! If you'd like to buy Anna's books then you can go to book depository here.To read Anna's blog, organise a session with her or see where her next workshop is you can go to her blog website. She also has an author website here.To read the book Anna mentions Turid Rugaas' Calming Signals you will find it at book depository hereTo read the book Language Signs and Calming Signals of Horses : Recognition and ApplicationBy (author) Rachaël Draaisma, you can go to book depository here.To see photos of Anna you can go to the blog on my website here. This weeks show is brought to you by EQUITANA Australia. In this episode I speak with Tanya Bevilaqua from Mindfully Mounted and Fit. I found this talk fascinating. Tanya uses the Alexander technique which I have heard about before but never took the time to understand. It fits completely with the values I love to promote on this podcast. It works to find the root cause of the problem and then gives the body an opportunity to do things differently. It requires empathy and sensitivity. It is gentle and profound.Tanya found this technique for herself after her own serious health issues that affected her balance. She now teaches it to humans and horses giving them balance and a deeper connection with their horse. This work is a collaboration between horse and rider where the horse can tell you where you need to adjust your body to give them better movement. I know right, fascinating! To get in touch with Tanya you can find her on Facebook. you can find out more about the Alexander Technique hereYou can also go to the blog on my website to see photos of Tanya and her horses and some of the work she has done with horses. This episode is brought to you by EQUITANA Australia. In this episode I speak with Kim Walnes from The Way of the Horse. This one is along one folks, I thought about doing it in 2 parts but couldn’t make you wait that long for this incredible story. Through most of this interview I had a lump in my throat and at the end of it I just wanted to reach through the internet, all the way across the ocean to America and give Kim an enormous hug and say “My word you’ve been through a lot”.Kim Walnes knows what it’s like to live your dream at be at the pinnacle of the horse riding world winning Rolex on her horse the Grey Goose in 1982. She tained with internationally renowned Jack LeGough and rode at Badminton. She has also ridden as a double to Melissa Gilbert in the movie Sylvester. However in 1991 she also experienced the lowest of lows when she lost her daughter who was murdered. I now right.Kim then later had a car accident where she had to be revived, her explanation of this time is incredible, her daughter was there, she wanted to stay but it wasn’t her time.Kim is one of those people who was born part horse. Horse was her first word, she can hear when they speak and she has now decided a great life lived is one where she can teach people about these incredible sentient beings and how you too can have true connection with your horse. To connect with Kim you can go to her Way of the horse website or her Facebook page. This episode was brought to you by EQUITANA Australia. I'll be there this year doing interviews for this podcast so make sure you grab your tickets and come and say hi.
In todays episode I speak with Mosie Trewhitt from Liberty horsemanship. Mosie is someone who gives me great hope for the future of horses on the planet. She is young and had the courage to understand there was a different way of being with horses from a teenager, and as a natural part of the social media generation, has a large following on Instagram, and is showing the world of horsepeople young and old, what is possible through choice and positive reinforcement. She is still young and knows that even though she is working in a new way, that there is even further for her to go. She is at a stage of really listening to her horses and seeing what they have to say, on where they can go together. I will be keeping a close eye on Mosie’s work as she develops it over the coming years, she is a real leader for her generation and I love that she was willing to share her story with a fellow podcaster. Mosie could easily have seen me as competition, but she instead saw me as a fellow traveller working with the same dream, to make the world a better place for horses, and she was happy to be interviewed and share her story. You can connect with Mosie on her website or Instagram account. You can also find her podcast on her website or on most podcast aps, it's called In the Spirit of Horse.

In todays episode I speak with Fiona Darroch Speedie from Dancing with Horses. Fiona spent her early life in north western queensland and where her sense of freedom and adventure was nurtured and horses, and relaxed baby boomer parents, were the facilitators of that freedom. On moving to Brisbane she began dancing lessons and became an instructor, but it was the time that she found a true Latin dance teacher that her life with dancing changed for good.In time Fiona decided that dancing, horses and leadership, which she was teaching in the corporate world, were too good a mix to not explore. So began her life creating Dancing with Horses. When I speak to people about dancing with horses, they either feel excited and curious or they squirm in their seat. It’s something that can really be an incredible mirror to your behaviours when it comes to your leadership styles. Once again we find that horses are here to give us so much in their gentle and non-judgemental way. I wonder how this will make you feel?To connect with Fiona you can go to her website, Facebook page or instagram account.
In todays show I speak with Gary Wells an Emmet Therapist for horses and humans. Gary’s name in the horse industry is held very high. Any time I’m on social media and see people ask for a body therapist, his name is always in the mix so when I started this podcast his name was one that I always kept in the back of my mind for approaching for an interview. And now you can find out why.Gary’s spent a lot of time in the horse racing industry and I am so glad that there are people in the industry who care for their horses enough to employ people like Gary, they care for their horses and their recovery and by using Gary and his Emmett therapy work, they are choosing a kind, gentle and so very effective way to keep their racers on the track.Gary works with all types of horses and as with most people I have interviewed on this podcast so far, the story of how they came to be doing their line of work is just as interesting as the work that they do.To connect with Gary you can go to his Gary Wells Practitioner Group website, or Facebook page or his Horse 360 website or Facebook page.
In Episode 12 I speak with Kate pilcher from Globetrotting. Kate is a person who not only loves horses, but loves to travel the world, and after a spiritual crisis in her young adult years, she trekked off around the world riding horses along the way, and decided to make a living out of her two loves. Hence globetrotting was born. When we become mothers, business owners and horse owners it can be easy to let the every-day grind stop you from doing the things that you love. Kate has kept such great balance in her life as every trek she sells, she rides herself first, before anyone else, she designs the whole experience for you in person with her little family in tow. She says she has the best job in the world, and after this interview, I am hard pressed to disagree with her!I had the pleasure of going to the Margaret river ride in 2017 and it was a trip of a lifetime. But when I booked it I knew that every trek on the website had the same feel about it, and after talking to other globetrotters it seems we all felt the same. It was after that trip that I really wanted to get the full story of how such an incredible business was brought to life, so I was thrilled when Kate agreed to be interviewed for the podcast. So this episode is a little different this one is not about training or working with horses, it’s about the pure pleasure of travelling the world and having a full cultural experience on horseback.During this interview it was a bit hard for me to stay focused as the virtual tour I had on horseback was so great I found it hard to come back to earth for a while. So for this episode I invite you to sit back, relax and enjoy your very own virtual tour of the world on horseback. If you would like to get in touch with Kate and her team and organise your very own life changing horse trek somewhere in this incredible world of ours, you can find her at her Globetrotting Website, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Pinterest or Google Plus. I hope to meet some of you in person out there on horseback one day! For now, enjoy Kate and her incredible story so far.
In this episode you will hear from Donna Anderson from One Horse Life Australia. Donna is at the end of many years of learning and is at the beginning of her teaching journey with horses and people.Donna started her life with horses as a lot of people did by getting her first pony when she was young. Then there was the catalyst that changed her horse training for ever. When one of Donna’s horses died while she was in the UK visiting her Mum, she felt lost and unable to go on with horses for the time being. When Donna finally made a promise to the horse she lost that she would change the way she trained and make sure she was always kind and gentle with horses, the universe delivered her, with one last test of her word, a new horse.Donna found One Horse Life with Anna Marciniak and spent years training online and then in person. This is the foundation of her training methods.Donna teaches connection with your horse and always giving your horse a voice. No matter your discipline or level of riding, Donna and her training can teach you to have the connection that you have always dreamed of.Like so many other trainers on this podcast series, it seems deep connection with your horse comes from deep self work, the horse is a mirror of your soul and seems to be here to teach us to let go of all that is holding us back.Donna has a great story to tell and is yet another brave and wonderful human who is here to listen to as much as she is to talk to her horses. To connect with Donna you can go to her Facebook page.
On today’s episode you will hear from Sandy Robertson from SEQ, that’s for South East Qld where she is located, Brumby Association. Sandy has always had a place in her heart to rescue horses and find them a loving home. She hasn’t ever seen a problem horse, just misunderstood horses who need some time and kindness.Sandy has worked for many years in land conservation so knows a lot about how to take care of the land and is someone who has spent her life giving to others. When she was asked to take over the SEQ Brumby Association she jumped at the chance to do her part and for the last few years has been bringing in, retraining and rehoming Australian brumbies for life in a domestic home. There is a lot in the news at the moment about the Kosciusko Brumbies. The Brumby bill has just been passed and will serve to protect the Brumbies and acknowledges the part they play in the history of Australia. Their numbers will be managed, and the aim is to strike a balance between conservation of the brumbies and the land where they are grazing. If their populations become too big they will be trapped in the most humane way possible and given to associations like SEQ Brumby and retrained for domestic life. After hearing Sandy’s story about the incredible nature of our iconic Australian Brumbies, my hope, is that we can all open our eyes and our hearts to these incredible horses and have a think when it’s time for us to purchase our next horse. I certainly have an eye on one as my next horse, with 4 horses currently I will have to wait a bit before taking the plunge. When the time comes, however, it will be an easy choice to make.Sandy is an incredible human and her passion, and tireless work with these gentle guys, all voluntary and from her own pocket, shine through, the brumbies are as lucky to have Sandy as she is to be a part of their story. You can connect with Sandy via her website or Facebook page. You can see pictures of Sandy and all of the horses she spake about in the interview and much more at the blog on my website.
Episode 5 is with Emma Bryant from Equality Equine Services. I was lucky enough to attend a clinic at Emma’s place and I was blown away with her patience and gentle way of teaching. Some people talk about wanting an equal relationship with their horse, Emma lives this every day. She takes the time that it takes, and will do whatever it takes for the horse she is working with to feel safe, and ready, before taking any more steps.Emma learned so much of her craft by working a long life with horses, especially traumatised ones, they taught her new ways to reach them, and all because Emma showed patience and put herself in their shoes time after time. Even the time Emma had to leave training horses and took what seemed like a sideways step, she still learned so much about herd and prey animals and it helped her with horses in the end as well. She then returned to her first love, training horses and has many stories to tell of the positive changes she has been able to make in both horse and rider’s life.Emma teaches bravery in her clinics for both horse and rider. This does not mean she teaches us how to face our fears and jump big jumps or take on something huge. She empowers both horse and rider by teaching safety and clear communication. You can find out more about Emma and her work at her website and you can also follow her on Facebook or Instagram or her YouTube Channel.
Angela Davison is The Horse Herbalist, she has spent her life and career with horses in many different ways. Starting out in showjumping in her native country of England, she came to Australia to visit her Dad and decided to make a life here.Angela was one of the first licensed female jockeys in Australia. Now her story up until this point would make an excellent episode in itself. However, it gets even more interesting when she decided, after seeing so many horses who were not able to be helped by modern medical methods, when she herself was always back on the horse quite fast from her chiropractic treatments and the herbal remedies that her chiropractor gave her, to go on and study herbalism and body work for both humans and horses. This led her to a career of giving back to horses in quite a fascinating way. Angela took 7 years to develop a technique she calls hair testing. This is not taking hair and putting it into a machine and getting a report back. This is about connection with the horse on a deep level to find the cause of the symptom. In herbalism Angela learned how to treat the whole being instead of just the symptom so she developed this method to give her this edge and be able to get real results faster than she could without them. There was no need to do hundreds of dollars worth of tests to try and find the problem, she created a method to get right to the source. It might all sound a bit hard to believe, but after 20 years of results and thousands of cases of success under her belt, Angela is definitely the real deal. As a Horse Herbalist Angela has treated top performance horses including the partnership she sponsors Shannan Goodwin and her horse Astro who are competing in dressage at Grand prix level. This episode is full of great information for how we can all understand our horses a bit better and see them as whole beings. But the best part, for me, was hearing all of the stories of horses that she helped along the way. She tells such great stories of the results she has gained for horses all over the world from all disciplines and breeds. You can find more information on Angela and her hair testing and products at her website. And you can follow her on her Facebook page.
When I choose people to come and work with my horses in any way, I look around for someone others highly recommend, then I check their credentials, and then I look for something else. What I look for is a complete passion, almost an obsession, for the work that they do. Someone who lights up when they talk about their work. Someone who can make you almost as excited as they are about the work that they do. And these people certainly see what they do almost as an honour, who feel blessed to be able to do so much to give back to horses in some way.In this episode I speak with Anna Minogue, who is an Equine Dentist, and Anna is one of those people I speak about above. In the interview you will hear the passion in her voice and if you miss it at all, just wait until we talk about brushing our horses teeth, that made her very excited indeed!I also chose to speak with Anna as she spent a long career initially as a vet nurse, so she lived in the word of pharmaceuticals and especially sedation in working with animals. Yet as an equine dentist she only uses sedation if she absolutely has to, every 200 horses or so. This really peaked my interest and I just had to speak with Anna to see how and why she made the transition to equine dentistry and how she is able to work so gently with horses doing what can be an invasive treatment for horses. She decided to get herself educated on horse behaviour and learned some techniques to help a horse feel at ease with her before putting a rasp in their mouth and waiting to see what would happen next! You will hear stories of some of the horses she has helped and how she loves our horses almost as much as we do. I certainly learned a lot in this conversation about horses teeth and the type of things to look for in my horses, as well as the questions to ask any dentist who I choose to work with my horses.I hope every horse out there gets an equine dentist with as much passion, knowledge and gentleness as Anna has.To find out more about Anna or to book her to work with your horse if you are in SE Qld, you will find her on her website and her Facebook Page
In our very first conversation here at Come Along for the Ride you will hear from Kirsty Hagger of Willowvale Spanish Mustangs who decided that she would be the first ever person, and so far, the only person ever, to import this critically endangered breed to the southern hemisphere. This is not only an incredible story about a woman who brought the first ever Spanish Mustang horses to Australia and is thus far still the only breeder here. It is also a story of transition from traditional dominant methods of horse training, to natural horsemanship, then to a very gentle way of training and being with horses where relationship and choice are paramount.I have 4 horses and when I asked the photographer to come and take photos for the cover of this podcast I thought that Gypsy’s mother, Kiowa would be the cover shot as she is so photogenic.Little did I know that Gypsy had other plans. She brought herself into position for the photo and proceeded to stare straight into the camera and gave us the shot we were after! It seems she had her own plans to get her face and the Spanish mustang breed known. So it seemed only fitting that the first ever podcast would be about this beautiful breed and Kirsty who was the first person to bring them to our shores.Kirsty speaks about her life with horses, the one horse, Woody, that changed everything for her when she was younger and who changed the way she trained all horses. She talks about her Australian Brumby Mare Sienna who made her change her ways even further to have to be so gentle as even looking at her was far too much pressure for this traumatised horse to handle. After years of seeing soundness and confirmation problems in many horses here in Australia, Kirsty came across the Spanish Mustang breed. This led her to a lifelong love and obsession with the breed. Kirsty tells us how she travelled across America and how she chose the horses, or rather how they chose her, who have been the foundation of her breeding stud here in Australia. She goes deep into the breed and the type of horse they are, the type of human you have to be to own one and the type of training they need in order to thrive. She also let’s us know the horses that she has up for sale at the moment, just in case you became as enamoured for the breed as I did when I first met them all those years ago.I have known Kirsty for many years and I am thrilled to be able to bring you her story. She is one of those people who is part horse, she is so gentle and kind with her horses and on her Facebook page you can read the incredible stories of her journey with the breed, how and why she trains them as she does and the results that she obtains. To find out more about Kirsty you can find her on her website or her Facebook pageI hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did.
