About Ghost MusicIt's only been a month since Dawn's musician husband, Clark, suddenly died. When his former student shows up with missing pages from Clark's unfinished book, voices from the pages are reawakened. A portal from the past cracks open, transporting us back to German Romanticism and renowned pianist Clara Schumann. As she desperately tries to preserve the dignity of her husband, the brilliant composer Robert Schumann, he descends further and further into madness. Separated by a gulf of both time and space, Dawn and Clara grapple with grief and lunacy, and the hope that long-ago melodies can heal their broken hearts. This production is sponsored in part by the AthensWest Emerging Play Grant awarded to the theater program and sabbaticals for both Dr. Greg Partain and Professor Tosha Fowler. The production will feature a team of professional actors and a director working in residence at Transylvania. The production will include the live musical performance of Dr. Greg Partain as an essential component of the play's concept and design. Professor Tosha Fowler will be helming the role of Clara as well as head producer. Professors Daniel Bennett and Melissa Gilbert will lead the design team. For more and to connect with us, visit https://www.artsconnectlex.org/art-throb-podcast.html
We kick things off with a little chat about Alison Balson, who played the unforgettable Nancy Oleson, along with some fond (and hilarious) memories from Dean and Alison. Here's a quick shout-out to Nancy—she brought a whole new level of wild to Walnut Grove! Let's hear it for a little Nancy love! Now, cue the bug spray and brace yourself—it's time for The Campout! An epic misadventure in the great outdoors where the Olesons and the Ingalls attempt a relaxing weekend of camping, (spoiler: no one was relaxed), a questionable school project and some very odd ideas of what one would consider a "vacation".This episode marks the beginning of Katherine MacGregor's comedic brilliance on the show, while also giving us a peek into Mrs. Oleson's more vulnerable side. Yes, underneath all the feathers and finger-pointing, she's got feelings! And this peek behind the curtain only deepened our love-hate obsession with her. It also opened up a whole new dimension to the Olesons and deepened our love-hate relationship with them. Especially the hate part.Alison spills the tea on what the Olesons were actually eating at that dinner table, how they filmed the now-iconic floating-down-the-river moment (it was way more dangerous than it looked), and the very creative (read: gross) way she and Melissa Gilbert stayed warm in their wetsuits. Let's just say it involved a bodily function and a lot of friendship. Dean and Alison also dive into Katherine MacGregor's unique approach to her role, including how she wove elements of her real life into many of Mrs. Oleson's unforgettable moments. And finally, things get real when Pamela asks the question we didn't know we needed:“What's your damage, Pa?!”Grab your bonnet, pour some of Ma's coffee, get out your anti-itch ointment, and join us for a laugh-filled, memory-soaked deep dive into one of the most delightfully chaotic episodes Little House ever gave us. This one's a classic! Then join Pamela, Dean, and Alison over on Patreon for an honest and heartfelt conversation about the growing negativity on Little House social platforms. We're taking a stand against toxic, bigoted, and harmful behavior from those who, somehow, believe there's space for hatred in the world of Walnut Grove. It's a powerful moment of reflection, solidarity, and setting the record straight—and one you won't want to miss.Don't forget to subscribe, comment, leave a review, and share this episode with fellow Bonnetheads.Links and Resources:Haven't signed up for Patreon yet? Alison is still living the French dream, while Dean teases us with hints of another thrilling Little House event. Meanwhile, Pamela cozies up with her puppy as we dive into this week's recap of “The Collection”—an episode featuring two of the biggest stars of the era, Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash. This is, without a doubt, the juiciest episode of the podcast we've ever recorded! We reveal never-before-heard details about what was happening behind the scenes, including the real reason Melissa Gilbert wasn't in this episode. And yes, we even get confirmation straight from Melissa herself during a live text session! You'll also find out why Pamela has an unexpectedly deep knowledge of the Carter-Cash family and what led Johnny and June to guest star on Little House. She also discusses “the two faces of Mary”—because yeah, Melissa Sue Anderson will serve some hardcore wrath at the drop of a hat! Johnny and June deliver stellar performances in this powerful episode, but we still stand by the golden rule: Never get on a horse with a perfect stranger! Then join Pamela, Dean and Alison on Patreon! OK, Hearties, here he is, Jack Wagner who plays Bill Avery on When Calls the Heart. The former soap star has played the sheriff-turned-judge character for 12 seasons on the Langley, BC-based Hallmark and Super Channel series. As viewers will see on the Saturday, Feb. 8 episode, Avery will be re-introduced to Georgie McGill, played by special guest star Melissa Gilbert whose credits date all the way back to her child star days on Little House on the Prairie. 'Bout time Avery got in on the romance on this series, says Wagner, a veteran of several soaps, including General Hospital, The Bold and The Beautiful and Santa Barbara. He also played a romantic lead on Aaron Spelling's frothy primetime serial Melrose Place. All this and the guy is a scratch golfer, the only non-professional athlete winner of a major pro-am tournament. Listen for his story about golfing with Sean Connery. We also talk about his chart-topping mid-'80s hit "All I Need," his previous encounter with Gilbert (both were on Dancing with the Stars) and his theory as to why When Calls the Heart is the perfect show for 2025.
We know you love a good Dumpster Dive (our analytics make that very clear!), so we're back with another rundown of all the celebrity news that fits. In the dumpster this week: A case from the UK where a 25-year-old woman has pleaded guilty to "cyber-farting" messages to her boyfriend's ex as a form of harassment. Melissa Gilbert took some strays from washed up emotional vampire Megyn Kelly over a Little House on the Prairie reboot and let's just say that America's Sweetheart was having none of it. Actress Isla Fisher ended 2024 with a note of gratitude as she navigates her post-divorce life from comedian Sacha Baron Cohen. Biana Censori, partner or wife of antisemitic rapper Ye, let it all hang out at the Grammys the other night, before police escorted both of them away from the event. Is Jennifer Garner's boyfriend trying to bail? Page Six has an odd piece about a supposed "insider" complaining on businessman boyfriend John Miller's behalf about how much time Jen is spending with her ex-husband Ben Affleck. Something to watch? “Little House on The Prairie” is scheduled for a reboot through Netflix, and conservative mouthpiece Megyn Kelly threatened to ruin the project if it went woke. Former star of the show, Melissa Gilbert, responded to the Kelly post saying how woke the original series really was and perhaps she should give it a rewatch. But first, Target is booted as a sponsor by Minnesota Pride due to their backpedaling of DEI initiatives. Finally, the cannabis community is helping victims of the LA fires with donations to replace some paraphernalia that may have been lost. To begin this month of love in all its guises, we reached out to a person who teaches the kind of love that makes communities thrive. Courtney Gambrell brings a long and rich background in behavioral health and spiritual care to wellness work. She's is a licensed clinical social worker in Texas and practiced psychotherapy there for many years. More recently, with an additional graduate degree she's served as a board certified spiritual care provider and staff wellness coordinator at Boulder Community Health in Boulder, Colorado. Most of her work has been in high acuity settings like the Emergency Department and Intensive Care Unit. Over the years, Courtney has developed rituals with the wild just outside the hospital door, using it to support humans as nature in life shifting changes for patients, their family members and healthcare staff. Throughout, Courtney continues awed by self-inquiry processes, humbled and heartened by the benefits of gathering in mutuality and shared purpose. You'll hear this awe throughout our conversation. Listen closely and you'll also hear echoes of the breeze, the songs of contented birds and perhaps a whisper of what might be a gentle brook. This is the vibe Courtney brings to things. Courtney shares her work as one way to affirm the power of community. She honors the connection of human and beyond human community as a source of health, and a source of healing. Our conversation today stands as an invitation to all of us to give abundant attention to the unity that is the living world of which we are a part.If you're interested in more on how our social ecologies can be tended in ways that are good for all ecologies, Courtney suggests you consider the work of Richard Schwartz on Internal Family Systems. Most recently, Schwartz has teamed up with Melissa Gilbert to produce this audio series. It's finally Sweater-Weather season! Alison and Dean recap last week's live screening of "Country Girls" in Simi Valley, where people arrived in full Prairie drag, reminiscent of the Rocky Horror Picture Show... (good idea, am I right?!) They were joined by this week's guest, who also premiered in "Country Girls"--the incredible Tracie Savage, who played Christy Kennedy in the first 2 seasons of LHOTP. Tracie hadn't seen the cast in 48 years until she joined them at the 50th Anniversary festival in Simi Valley this past March! Fun fact: Tracie came from an entertainment family, and was the one child up against Melissa Gilbert for the role of Laura Ingalls. But she isn't bitter -- because she went on to have an incredible career in entertainment, (notably having a great death scene in the infamous Friday the 13rh franchise) and then found her calling in broadcast journalism, landing in Los Angeles, covering history-making stories such as the OJ Simpson trial. Speaking of OJ, Tracie tells a harrowing and riveting story of her experience having had to testify at the trial--and we are shook! Currently, Tracie is a college professor, where she feels the most gratified. Tracie is seriously awesome, you will love her story--and we are so happy that she a part of the Little House family. Then, Alison answers some of your listener questions, specifically for Nellie Season 1!And for more fun, join us on Facebook for the Little House Food Contest!! That's right, Alison Arngrim premiered as Nellie Oleson on Little House on the Prairie, and our worlds have never been the same. Find out how being bullied in real life lent itself to her channeling the nastiness of Nellie Oleson, and how her "prairie drag" helped to transform her into the role. The immediate connection felt between Alison and Melissa Gilbert allowed them to achieve one of the all-time greatest TV rivalries and how the enjoyment of the kill is comparable to Alison's hero, Hannibal Lecter! Alison's experience of being the most hated person to one of the most beloved people is nothing short of amazing, as is Alison's embracing of the character and her place in TV history--and all of our hearts--as our favorite Prairie Bitch. As Alison so perfectly says it: "BEAUTY IS FLEETING--VILLAINY IS FOREVER" Then join us on Patreon for another fun segment! Melissa Gilbert grew up in front of all of our eyes playing Laura Ingalls Wilder on Little House on the Prairie, and she managed to avoid some of the pitfalls that beset other child stars. Then she met Rob Lowe, and America's Sweetheart started a whole new chapter. It's included two divorces - one trashy, one very much not trashy - and a whole lot of spiderwebs. Today we have a very special guest, one that lives in the hearts of all Bonnetheads: Karen Grassle, otherwise known as Caroline Ingalls--or "Ma"! Beginning with the Little House pilot, her performance on Little House captured the hearts of millions, embodying strength, warmth, and resilience. Beyond her work on Little House, she has enjoyed a varied career in theater, film, and television, earning a reputation as a versatile and dedicated performer. Her contributions to Little House continue to be celebrated world wide and she is beloved as one of the most iconic TV moms in television history. Her belief of Ma being a strong woman and not an archetypal ingenue was a big deal in 1974.We reminisce about the enthusiastic reception for her during the Simi Valley 50th Anniversary Festival, and how Karen didn't know how beloved she was until she was 80 years old--the year she published her memoir, "Bright Lights, Prairie Dust". She talks about accepting her destiny as Ma and how it influenced the trajectory of her career, how recovery from alcohol addition was a huge milestone in her life, and shares memories of some favorite moments on set, including Victor French, Melissa Sue Anderson and the iconic “A Matter of Faith” episode. #chickenwireKaren shares how acting was her calling from a young age and how writing her personal and vulnerable memoir was healing for her. Karen answers some of your listener questions, and then joins us on Patreon for a very personal conversation about difficulties on the Little House set behind the scenes and with Michael Landon during her time on Little House. It is safe to say, this is the most anticipated episode since we began this podcast! Today's guest is an original, essential, and beloved member of the Little House family. Episodes featuring her rich, dramatic, and traumatic life on the prairie setratings records for the series. She became famous and unforgettable as Mary, the eldest Ingalls daughter--Today she is Melissa Sloan, but fans will always know her as Melissa Sue Anderson. You take the good, you take the bad--and Melissa is here clearing up some misconceptions that might have been ruminating about her, including her on-screen love interests, her letting go of the past and embracing new friendships with cast members, and some behind the scenes happenings that were frankly...not cool. With an adult perspective now, she looks back on her time on Little House which is truly illuminating--and revealing. Find out how Melissa got the role, why she left the show, and why Pamela will forever be #TeamMary. Mo Rocca has been on Pamela's shortlist for "Dream Guests" since this podcast began. And we're thrilled he's here! Mo Rocca is widely praised for his multifaceted career as a writer, humorist, and television correspondent. He is particularly known for his engaging storytelling style, which blends humor, historical insight, and a touch of irony. In addition to his writing, Rocca's work as a correspondent on CBS Sunday Morning and hisroles in various television programs, including "The Daily Show", "I Love the 70s" and "I Love the 80's", "My Grandmother's Ravioli" on the Cooking Channel, and "Henry Ford's Innovation Nation" on CBS has cemented his reputation as a versatile and engaging media personality. His work often highlights underappreciated figures and lesser-known historical facts, making his content both educational and entertaining, as shown in his Podcast and Book, "Mobituaries". His latest book, "Roctogenarians", celebrates individuals who achieved significant milestones later in life, drawing praise for its inspiring and often humorous profiles of these late bloomers--one of them being none other than Laura Ingalls Wilder. Join us as we discuss all things Prairie and how Mo got started on his eclectic and multifaceted career. Find out if Mo is #TeamAdam or #TeamManly, why Nellie is a gay icon, why old people are his "jam", and what our imaginary Walnut Grove nightclubs would be named. Ever the Bonnethead, Mo asked as many questions to Alison and Dean as we asked him...and quickly discovered he could be the biggest Nellie Oleson fan of all time. Quite simply, Mo Rocca ROCKS.For more info go to:www.LittleHouse50Podcast.com to connect with our hosts and link to their websites.*The merch shop is under renovation - we will keep you posted on the status!*www.LivinOnaPrairieTV.com Check out this Award Winning Series created by Pamela Bob, with special guest stars Alison Arngrim and Charlotte Stewart.Little House 50th Anniversary Bus Tours - www.SimiValleyChamber.org select Little House 50th Anniversary and then Bus TicketsFacebook/Instagram/TikTok:Dean Butler @officialdeanbutlerAlison Arngrim @alisonarngrimPamela Bob @thepamelabob, @prairietvMO ROCCA:Mobituaries - https://www.mobituaries.com/Rocktogenarians - Rocktogenarians Book - Info and Where To BuyMo interviews Melissa Gilbert: Melissa Gilbert InterviewInstagram: @mobituariesFACEBOOK LIVE with PAMELA and DEANhttps://fb.watch/sXZvDxawWr/LITTLE HOUSE EVENTSJuly 19th-21st Walnut Grove, MIAddress: 330 8th StreetWalnut Grove, MN 56180July 26th-28th SD, Carrie DaysKeystone Community CenterAugust 16th-17th Tombstone, AZBook SigningAddress: 530 East Allen St. Tombstone AZ 85638August 30th-Sept. 1st Watertown, CThttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/little-house-50th-cast-reunion-ct-tickets-753166881417Address: Connecticut Convention Center100 Columbus Boulevard Hartford, CT 06103September 3rd-4th 2024, Lancaster, PA https://www.eventbrite.com/e/792807006097?aff=oddtdtcreatorFarm & Home CenterAddress: 1383 Arcadia Road Lancaster, PA 17601September 14th-15th Lyles, TNJohnny Cash's Hideaway FarmAddress: 9347 Old Highway 46 Lyle, TN 37025September 27th-29th Mansfield, MOWilder DaysAddress: 100 E ParksquareMansfield, MO 65704United StatesOctober 4th & 5th - Tulsa, OKOctober 18th & 19th - Almanzo Wilder HomesteadNovember 16th & 17th - Branson, MOBranson Convention Center200 South Sycamore Street Branson, MO 65616December 6th-8th : Corsicana, TXhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/923124278567?aff=oddtdtcreatorCONFESSIONS OF A PRAIRIE BITCH-ALISON'S ONE-WOMAN SHOWJuly 12, 13 & 14. To quote one of the greatest movies of all time, Waiting For Guffman... "It's the day of the show, y'all!". That's right, Dean's memoir "Prairie Man" is officially launched! And we're so honored to spend this morning (taped on July 25th) talking about how he got here and realizing this is just the beginning of the beginning! We answer many of your fantastic listener questions sent in as a part of the Facebook Live event Pamela hosted with Dean for LittleHouseOnthePrairie.com this past Monday June 24th. (If you'd like to see the entire conversation, the link to the Facebook video is below). Finally, we hear about Alison's French escapades at the Monte-Carlo Television Festival with several fellow cast members including Matthew Labyorteaux and Melissa Sue Anderson. They wined, they dined, they were weirdly color-coordinated. But the real question is, did Alison end up buying some of those Margaritas for Melissa Sue Anderson? Perhaps we'll be seeing Melissa Sue soon on the pod...All Prairie-related events and Alison's solo show "Confessions of a Prairie Bitch" are listed below. For more info go to:www.LittleHouse50Podcast.com to connect with our hosts and link to their websites.*The merch shop is under renovation - we will keep you posted on the status!*www.LivinOnaPrairieTV.com Check out this Award Winning Series created by Pamela Bob, with special guest stars Alison Arngrim and Charlotte Stewart.Little House 50th Anniversary Bus Tours - www.SimiValleyChamber.org select Little House 50th Anniversary and then Bus TicketsFacebook/Instagram/TikTok:Dean Butler @officialdeanbutlerAlison Arngrim @alisonarngrimPamela Bob @thepamelabob, @prairietvFACEBOOK LIVE with PAMELA and DEANhttps://fb.watch/sXZvDxawWr/LITTLE HOUSE EVENTSJune 27th - Book Signing for "Prairie Man" at the Grove at 7pmJuly 19th-21st Walnut Grove, MIAddress: 330 8th StreetWalnut Grove, MN 56180July 26th-28th SD, Carrie DaysKeystone Community CenterAugust 16th-17th Tombstone, AZBook SigningAddress: 530 East Allen St. Tombstone AZ 85638August 30th-Sept. 1st Watertown, CThttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/little-house-50th-cast-reunion-ct-tickets-753166881417Address: Connecticut Convention Center100 Columbus Boulevard Hartford, CT 06103September 3rd-4th 2024, Lancaster, PA https://www.eventbrite.com/e/792807006097?aff=oddtdtcreatorFarm & Home CenterAddress: 1383 Arcadia Road Lancaster, PA 17601September 14th-15th Lyles, TNJohnny Cash's Hideaway FarmAddress: 9347 Old Highway 46 Lyle, TN 37025September 27th-29th Mansfield, MOWilder DaysAddress: 100 E ParksquareMansfield, MO 65704United StatesOctober 4th & 5th - Tulsa, OKOctober 18th & 19th - Almanzo Wilder HomesteadNovember 16th & 17th - Branson, MOBranson Convention Center200 South Sycamore Street Branson, MO 65616December 6th-8th : Corsicana, TXhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/923124278567?aff=oddtdtcreatorCONFESSIONS OF A PRAIRIE BITCH-ALISON'S ONE-WOMAN SHOWJuly 12, 13 & 14. Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth Interview with Dean Butler, Actor, Producer, Director, “Almanzo Wilder” from “Little House on the Prairie” About Harvey's guest: Today's guest, Dean Butler, is a beloved actor, producer and director who has been immortalized for his unforgettable portrayal of “Almanzo Wilder”, the innocent and pure-hearted young man who won “Laura's” heart and married her, on one of the most cherished and treasured television series ever made, “Little House on the Prairie”, which is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its debut in 1974. Our guest also appeared in the 3 “Little House” movies, “Look Back to Yesterday”, “The Last Farewell”, and “Bless All the Dear Children”. He also wrote, produced and directed the 2008 video, “Almanzo Wilder: Life Before Laura”. And he produced and directed the 2015 video, “Little House on the Prairie: The Legacy of Laura Ingalls Wilder”. And in 2012 he co-produced the hugely popular PBS Music Special, “Pa's Fiddle: The Music of America”. And yes, he and his co-star Melissa Gilbert have the singular distinction of having won the 2006 TV Land Award for the Most Memorable Onscreen Kiss, which warmed everyone's hearts, and still resonates in all of our memories. But our guest has had a highly successful career that has gone well beyond his work on “Little House”. He co-starred in the TV movie “Forever”, and the ground-breaking 1985 LGBTQ feature film, “Desert Hearts”. And he's also remembered for his portrayal of “Moondoggie”, Gidget's husband, in the TV movie “Gidget's Summer Reunion”, which generated the TV series “The New Gidget”. And he had a recurring role as Buffy's father “Hank Summers” in the hit TV show, “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”. Our guest has also had a distinguished stage career, having appeared on Broadway in “Into the Woods”, which ran for 11 months, and he starred in “West Side Story” in a highly acclaimed tour of Japan. And if all of that weren't enough, he's had a highly successful career as the producer of the immensely popular interview program, “FAIR-ER-TY”, which ran for 10 seasons on the NBC Golf Channel. And now our guest is releasing his brand new memoir entitled “Prairie Man: My Little House Life and Beyond”. This is an illuminating, intimate and poignant book in which our guest shares his personal journey of family, relationships, a diverse career, and the remarkable experience of being part of a legendary show which is so deeply entrenched in American pop culture. If you're a woman who is part of Generation X or the baby boomers, then you probably, like me, spent your Monday nights growing up watching one of America's most enduring and endearing TV series. The show followed the wholesome Ingalls family and their life in Walnut Grove, Minnesota in the 1800s, loosely based on the books by Laura Ingalls Wilder. The show's star was Melissa Gilbert who played little Laura Ingalls, an optimistic, curious and mischievous young girl who quickly became America's sweetheart. The pilot for the show aired 50 years ago on March 30th on NBC and the series ran for a remarkable nine seasons. Melissa joins The Excerpt to talk about the show's outsized impact on American culture and share her experience being part of it.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
