Coming to you from Equitana in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, Warwick interviews Brett Parbery in front of a live audience as a part of the Equitana programming. Brett Parbery was born to ride, growing up in Dorrigo, NSW, in a family deeply immersed in horse culture. His father professionally broke and trained horses, specializing in cattle horse sports like campdrafting and cutting, and Brett was involved in stable life from a young age, helping train horses before and after school. Weekends were spent competing in various equestrian activities, from campdrafting and polocrosse to pony club and agricultural shows, where Brett's passion for rodeo was ignited by watching saddle bronc riding at night-time events. Determined to become a cowboy, Brett pursued saddle bronc riding nationally and internationally from 1989 to 2000, consistently ranking among Australia's top 20 riders. However, his love for training horses led him to transition to dressage, and in 2000, he moved to Europe to train under top professionals before returning home to establish his own stable. Over the years, Brett has excelled in dressage, representing Australia at two World Equestrian Games and earning numerous accolades, including over 30 Australian Championships and a standout 2010 season featuring an 8th-place finish at the World Games in Kentucky. With extensive training under legendary riders like Edward Gal and Ulla Salzgeber, Brett developed a horse-friendly training system, which he now shares through “Performance Riders,” an online education program co-founded with Natalie Foxon to mentor riders of all levels, guiding them from foundational skills to high performance. In this episode with reknowned equine body worker Jim Masterson, I got to know the origin story behind the Masterson Method and ask Jim about his perspective on a wide range of important topics including consent, pain and environment for our horses.  One of my favourite take-aways from our conversation is the simple yet profound power of observation. Jim is skilled in mindful observation when it comes to attuning to horses and helping them release tension, and this is a skill that anyone can learn. We chatted about how, over time, this visual awareness begins to translate into a felt sense and improved palpatory skills, and how ultimately working on our horses' physical bodies becomes a relationship and trust building activity.  If you've yet to try Jim's cornerstone technique, the Bladder Meridian, head over to YouTube or The Masterson Method website to learn how, and be sure to let us know how your horse responds!  Jim Masterson is the founder of The Masterson Method – a breakthrough form of equine bodywork which helps enhance performance, suppleness, mobility, and comfort whilst developing the relationship and bond of trust between the horse and owner. He began his career in 2000, working on horses competing in U.S. Show Jumping events, before going on to become the Equine Bodywork Therapist for the USEF Endurance Team from 2006, through 2014. Since then, Jim's worked on thousands of equine athletes, competing in events such as the FEI World Cup, Pan American and World Equestrian Games competitions. He's the author of Beyond Horse Massage and Dressage Movements Revealed, and last year he paired up with Dr. Robin Robinett, DVM to release a new book, Beyond Dog Massage which applies the same intuitive and hands-on approach to help relieve soreness and achieve connection. Since 2006, over 10,000 people have attended Masterson Method Weekend Courses, and Jim and his instructors have trained over 500 Certified Practitioners in 20 countries. Jim's vision is to have every horse on the planet experience the Bladder Meridian Technique at least once, and to empower owners, carers, competitors or professionals with the means to deeply connect with their horse or dog.

My guest for this episode is Jane Pike. I first heard Jane's name in context of the World Equestrian Games in 2018. She was the mindset coach for Warwick and Robyn Schiller, who competed in reining, and scored their best scores during an extremely high-pressure event. Prior to those games, I had never heard of reining; however, it was the discipline that captivated me then and has ever since. Back to Jane. I was very intrigued by Jane's approach to mindset training. Not only does she align with my experience of what really works, she aligns very much with the natural world. I met her in 2022 at the Journey On Podcast summit, and also got to spend time with her on at the 2023 event as well. I was thrilled when she agreed to come on this podcast.  This conversation flew by for both of us. We started and were immediately in the flow, speaking about topics like what to do with discomfort, the distinction between the action of fear and the emotion of fear, the way our mind can get in loops like Groundhog Day, and so much more. There were many quotable moments in this conversation. One of my favorite's was this: Our role is not to police other people's passions.  Here's what Jane has to say about herself:  Jane Pike is a writer, poet, and horsewoman from the South Island of New Zealand. In the horse world, her work focuses on practices and understandings that increase vitality for both humans and horses, incorporating nervous system awareness to both mindset and movement. The methods she teaches explore physical and emotional patterns at their most foundational level- the brain and the nervous system- with the aim of creating adaptability and responsiveness, both in and out of the saddle. Jane has featured and written for various magazines around the world and is a sought after international clinician and trainer through her business Confident Rider. Jane's passions and expertise also extend to how we can best live full and creative lives, and develop the tenacity and courage to do so. Her deep appreciation for writing and the arts has also seen her skip down the garden path of how it is we can all find and allow for our own unique creative expression, sharing her own writing and teaching retreats and workshops that focus on giving ourselves permission to and making the time for following the things that we love.
