In this conversation, we review the highlights of this paper, and discuss things like The Matching Law, making desired behavior more efficient in generating reinforcement, making problem behaviors less efficient, and how altering reinforcement parameters like delay, magnitude, and schedules can enhance learner progress. We also talk about the work that Steve does with his company, Whole Child Consulting, as well as a Q & A he will be doing on this topic that's coming up on April 23rd, 2025. In this episode of The Horsemanship Breakthroughs Podcast, I'm joined by the incredible Kelly de Geus: an amazing horsewoman known for her ability to train horses the piaffe in a light, soft, willing, biomechanically correct way. Kelly de Geus is a dedicated horse trainer and coach from the Netherlands, who has been captivated by horses for as long as she can remember. For over a decade, Kelly's main focus has been on training horses herself, developing a specialty in teaching horses to piaffe and passage in hand. This is always a result of optimal communication and body use, and never a quick fix or trick. Having trained over 1000 horses in hand, Kelly now primarily focuses on sharing the knowledge she gained by doing so, thereby helping more people (and, in turn, more horses) feel better, improve posture and optimise performance. I first reached out to Kelly for online lessons years ago after being mesmerised by how light and happy her horses looked in the piaffe. At the time, she didn't have online resources, but she agreed to help me through online lessons and I was blown away by her approach. She taught me that that piaffe is reflection of correct basics, and that there are a sequence of things that need to be in place before the piaffe is possible. Her values in training horses align closely to my own so I am so happy to share her voice with the horse world. In this episode, we cover: ✨ The true purpose of piaffe as a diagnostic and gymnastic exercise (it's more than just fancy footwork and it's not a ‘circus trick'!) ✨The importance of conncection, communication, & biomechanics ✨ Common mistakes & how to know if your horse is ready to start training the piaffe ✨ The groundwork that sets the foundation for collection ✨ Adjusting her training approach to different horses ✨The role of positive reinforcement in her training ✨Plus so much more! If you've ever dreamed of training the piaffe, this is THE episode for you!

In this episode, I'm pulling back the curtain on one of the most misunderstood concepts in behavior... positive reinforcement. It's a term that gets tossed around, misunderstood, and sometimes weaponized through welfare-washing. But the science? It's clear. Reinforcement exists, but it may not mean what you think it means - and especially when you see it being used in marketing! Visit us at shapedbydog.com I sometimes receive comments that some dogs need all 4 quadrants of dog training. But what does that mean, why does it matter for your dog, and what does science tell us? We all need to be aware of the blurred lines between quadrants, so I'm discussing each. Plus, I'm sharing experiences and insights on what unintentional punishment can be for dogs and how to avoid it, what reinforcement really is, and how it's possible to reinforce a dog for behavior you don't want. In this episode, you'll hear: • How the four quadrants of operant conditioning apply to everyday dog training. • An explanation of Positive Reinforcement, Positive Punishment, Negative Punishment and Negative Reinforcement - +R, +P, -P, -R • How to recognize what quadrant you are training in and my experiences. • The importance of reinforcers and using what's reinforcing for your dog. • How I built value for my dog Swagger to watch other dogs work. • Control and lessons from B.F. In this engaging conversation, Phil and Eugene Banks explore the profound impact of education, the journey of becoming an educator, and the art of teaching. They discuss the importance of connection, positive reinforcement, and authentic engagement in the classroom, emphasizing that teaching is not just about content but about the context and relationships built with students. Eugene shares his personal journey into education, highlighting the challenges and triumphs he faced along the way, and the strategies he employs to foster a dynamic learning environment. They also explore the importance of embracing mistakes in education, setting clear expectations, and fostering a growth mindset among students. Eugene shares his teaching strategies, including the 'We Do' approach, which emphasizes collaborative learning. They discuss the need to challenge traditional educational practices and the significance of inspiring young minds through literature. Eugene also highlights the urgency of pursuing dreams and the impact of his books aimed at empowering young black children. Positive reinforcement can significantly impact student engagement. Finding your teacher voice takes time and experience. Education requires a long-term commitment to improvement. Teaching is an art form that evolves with practice. Authenticity in teaching resonates with students. Student voice should dominate over teacher voice in the classroom. Engagement strategies are crucial for maintaining student focus. Mistakes in teaching are opportunities for growth. Building relationships with students enhances the learning experience. Mistakes are part of the learning journey. Setting clear expectations minimizes room for error. The 'We Do' strategy encourages collaborative problem-solving. Facilitators guide students rather than dictate learning. Growth mindset is essential for overcoming challenges. Education should prepare students for real-life situations. Rewards should be earned, not given for mere participation. Challenging traditional practices can enhance learning. Books can inspire and empower young minds. Acting with urgency can lead to fulfilling dreams. If you've ever found yourself questioning what is the most ethical way to train horses, felt like an outsider when it comes to exploring different methods, and/or you're a mum trying to balance horses, life, and kids…then this episode is for you! A while ago, I received a message on Facebook from Chloe Bailey, who had joined the new free Horse Mums FB group. She sent me a Google Doc in response to a question I had posted about how people navigate the use of reinforcements. Her response was so insightful that I knew it had to be shared, so here we are! I sat down with Chloe Bailey, a welfare-concious ‘amateur' horse trainer who has, like many of us, been asking those horse welfare questions and contemplating on how we can best navigate the use of reinforcement types in training. We spoke about: Chloe's horse journey and how she navigates the use of reinforcements in training What led her to explore positive reinforcement (R+) Overcoming guilt from past training methods and advice for others facing the same struggles Balancing idealism with practicality in training The biggest misconceptions about positive reinforcement (R+) and negative reinforcement (R-) Dealing with a shift in identity after moving away from traditional horse communities Experimenting with longer delays between the click and reward – key insights The future of R+ in the horse world – what changes Chloe hopes to see in the next 5–10 years How becoming a mother has changed her horsemanship The challenges of being a horse mum and human mum – and how she manages them Chloe's latest horsemanship breakthrough Her favourite horse books and resources- including 2 authors that are completely new to me which I'm excited to read Her personal horse goals for the future Plus so much more!
In this episode, 195 - Is There Something Wrong With Me?, I tackle the common narrative that there is something wrong with today's youth and young adults. I share my frustration with this perspective and explain why it can be so detrimental. The key is understanding confirmation bias - the way our brains seek to prove what we already believe to be true. When we tell someone they are broken or lacking in some way, that's all their brain will focus on. Instead, I encourage focusing on what's going right, looking towards a positive future, and lifting others up. We need to quit pointing out problems and instead empower the rising generation to see their own worth and potential. Ultimately, there is nothing wrong with you. You are a divine creation of our Heavenly Parents, and any struggles you face are part of the human experience. With the Savior's help, you can overcome anything. Let's shift the narrative and start celebrating all the amazing things young people are capable of. As always, if you found this episode helpful, I want to invite you to subscribe if you aren't already, share this episode with your friends and missionaries you know, and write a review. This is an excerpt from our live parrot recall training, focusing on the pitfalls of over-training and the importance of recall in various scenarios. We share examples of a black palm cockatoo named Jupiter, whose wings were rehabilitated using falconry techniques, and a 24-year-old cockatoo named Henry, who was initially clipped. Hillary emphasized the need for systematic and methodical training, avoiding forceful interactions, and using neutral or positive reinforcers. She highlighted the importance of generalizing recall to different environments and surfaces, and the potential issues of circular reinforcement. She also addressed specific questions about training a blue and gold Macaw, stressing the need for space and appropriate training methods. What to listen for:In part two of their discussion with the brilliant Denise Fenzi, our hosts Robin Greubel and Crystal Wing explore the delicate dance between striving for precision and cherishing the quirks of canine behavior!“Your dog has to have a lot of ‘want to.' If they don't have a lot of ‘want to,' they're not the right dog for the job.”Denise explains why picking the right dog for the job from the get-go is foundational to success. When you bring a dog with the right desire to the table, your job as a handler–controlling and shaping that desire–becomes much easier. She also talks about identifying essential behaviors like a reliable whistle recall and advocates for a training philosophy driven by motivation and enthusiasm rather than obligation. She tackles ethical dilemmas faced in high-pressure operations and tells us to always prioritize the well-being of both the dog and the handler.Denise also discusses the controversial use of e-collars and the pursuit of perfect recall. She explores the sensitive topic of rehoming, advocating for it as a positive solution when there is a mismatch between the dog's needs and the owner's expectations.“Leadership is about setting a path. You can't take on a leadership position if you're not willing to say unpopular things.”Denise gives her thoughts on leadership and personal growth through the lens of dog training. Early socialization, adaptability, and setting boundaries are crucial themes in building confidence and respect in dogs. Finally, Denise tells us why she believes dogs are being over-socialized today, and why she's totally against doggie daycare for puppies!Key Topics:Reinforcing Nonnegotiable Behaviors (02:28)Choosing the Right Dog for the Job (10:00)Rehoming Your Dog (22:05)Denise's Thoughts on Negative Online Discourse (22:34)Setting Boundaries and Becoming a Better Leader (32:11)Giving Your Dog Freedom (43:05)Box Feeding (47:33)What's Next for Denise? In this episode, we discuss the importance of pointing out the positive, fight night, and pride in a blended family.
In this episode, recorded on November 6th, I recap some of the weird moments having to do with pets and other animals in the run up to the election, from Peanut the Squirrel to Kristi Noem shooting her puppy, several stories about people eating dogs and beyond. But the apex of the weirdness came to me in in a speech where Carlson Tucker starts off talking about how American's are too nice to dogs, and then devolves into talking about how those on the left need to be, well… spanked. As a positive reinforcement trainer, I cannot help but reflect on the Trump's win through the lens of animal behavior, as I've come to understanding it through working with dogs. This leads me to wonder what would happen if political governance wasn't rooted in punishment? Is it possible that helping people to better understanding and applying positive reinforcement in dog training could have broader implications for society? Maybe? Maybe. Maybe if we all spent more time training, we'd at least spend less time doomscrolling… This episode includes parts from the last two chapters of my new book, How To Train Your Dog With Love + Science, one about studies that have been done on spanking kids and the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior's recommendations on using punishment with dogs, and the other on BF Skinner's suggestion for change people's behavior on a societal level without force. An audiobook version of the book has just been released from Tantor Press, narrated by Eunice Wong. Anamarie and I recorded this episode separately because we had different things we wanted to communicate in a format that wasn't really right for conversation.Me first: What if you're someone who has strong feelings about putting dogs in shock collars and... one of your friends publishes a paper on research she did that involved putting shock collars on dogs? What if that person is your podcast host?Hi, I'm Annie, and this is my life. The day after I publish a book that is essentially a paean to Positive Reinforcement dog training rooted in science and research, a major journal publishes a paper (rooted in science and research!) that says that using a shock collar may be more effective when teaching a dog to stop chasing than reward-based training would be in the same period of time. Anamarie was one of the authors.Do you hop on the bandwagon and hate on this person?Do you yell at the angry mob -- which contains many of your colleagues -- to stop hating on her because she is someone you respect and love?Do you hit your desk on the head several times because you know that 99.9 percent of US dog owners don't care about the studies or the ethics and will never consult with experts but are going to use these things anyway because THEY'RE COMPLETELY LEGAL?Do you ... buy a shock collar?Join me as I confirm all my worst fears during a series of phone calls with shock collar retailers. In the 2nd part of the episode, Anamarie responds to attacks on the study that has been the source of so much criticism in the Positive Reinforcement dog training community over the last few weeks. You can read the study here:More:GET MY BOOK!
