In this episode I speak with Steph Kallstrom Steph was born in Peru and adopted by her mother and raised in Canada. As for most of us equestrians she fell in love with horses the first time she saw them and went into the world of Hunter/jumpers. Steph is a big part of the voice of Black Equestrians. And she has so much to teach us, if we can stop and listen. I have been waiting with great anticipation for this chat from the moment Steph said yes and booked in to have her interview. Steph is someone whose voice I listen to. Every time she posts on her socials or writes a new blog I read up and take note. I always learn something new. Steph is a minority in our equestrian world in many ways. She had a choice to stay in her lane and keep doing her thing and be happy enough. As you will hear in this interview, she is busy enough already, she didn’t need to take on another cause. But this is not just another cause for Steph, this is her life, she writes from experience and her perspective always teaches me something new. As a white woman I can only use my imagination for a lot of the racism that black equestrians encounter on a daily basis. And a lot of it is not a big event trauma, it’s the little things every day that are ever present and eat away at the most basic need we all have as humans, the need to belong. And it’s not just giving me perspective that I admire and learn from Steph. It’s how she writes and the feeling I get when I read her work. In Steph’s words I hear a strong and very intelligent Woman who is fierce and will not be bullied into submission by those trying to dull her words and make her sit down and wait her turn. She reminds me of the wild horses making trainers change their ways as they will not submit to the old traditional training methods. I love reading Steph’s work as I strive to be a voice in the way that she is. Her words are thoughtful, heartfelt and moving and always, every single time they are the truth. She calls out anyone who tries to shame or stifle her. That’s what I mean by fierce. I hope you enjoy our conversation and I hope you go and follow Steph on her socials and support the incredible change she is making in the horse world. In this episode I speak with Jim Masterson, the creator of the Masterson Method. The Masterson Method is a form of body work that you can learn to do on your own horse and you can also go deeper into training and become a practitioner.I’ve always marvelled at the amount of body work modalities in both the human and horse world and love the fact that there are so many because it is a reflection of the individuality of both humans and horses. With all of our complexities and differences, we can look at what can support us and our horse at any moment in time. The Masterson Method is one of those that you may very well want in your tool-box, and not just for the sake of body work. What I learned in this conversation with Jim is how this is more than a body work for horses. It is also a way to connect with your horse. If you can do this method of body work, then you will be a conscious horse person. Because to do this work you have to let your mind go, let go of the outcome and see what your horse has to say, or how they respond, in each moment.Sounds amazing right?Well I thought so to.Thank you to those of you who believed Jim was going to be a great podcast guest and asked me to interview him as you were right. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did.To connect with Jim and The Masterson Method click any of the links below.Website: https://mastersonmethod.com/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/MastersonMethodInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/mastersonmethod/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCdCz74CUaLv8YnNhcRyACOwhttps://www.youtube.com/user/mastersonmethodTwitter: https://twitter.com/MastersonMethod

Robin is the sister of Linda Tellington-Jones, the creator of the Tellington TTouch method of bodywork.Robin and I talked about the Tellington TTouch Method and how it came about in the first place. It is amazing to hear how someone was able to experience something for themselves and then go on to create their very own form of bodywork to help horses.Robin is an amazing woman and horse person in her very own right. We spoke about so many topics in the horse world including how we as women need to advocate for our horses and be in our power. We also talked about how to choose a trainer of any kind.About their words matching their actions. Robin suggested we look at what do they do when what they are doing doesn’t work.We even talked about why having water available for your horse during any training or body work session is really important for both you and your horse. This is a rich conversation that I enjoyed immensely.I have put a couple of links in the show notes but there are so many different pages and groups on facebook that I suggest if you want to follow the Tellington TTouch Method that you put Tellington TTouch into the search bar of Facebook and find the one that is in your country. As Robin says, there are a lot. So head on over there after you’ve listened to find out more about what is happing in your area. You can also gather more information on Tellington TTouch here https://ttouch.com/index.htmlhttps://ttouch.ca/© Copyrighted

Riders needed one hand to hold a sword and fight, so their horse needs self-carriage with the rider using one hand for the reigns.Anja videoed the best modern dressage horses in the world and slowed the video down to show us all, that the movements they were making and how they are executed are not true to form.We talked about how in modern dressage comps the horse who is best ridden does not win. It’s the horse who is the best natural mover, who may not be ridden as well as the others, that wins. Everything is in reverse.I asked how in the world we can begin classical dressage competitions to overtake the modern dressage competitions. We talked about how much change that would realistically take.Anja also talked about that she believes that there is no such thing as an unwilling horse and how we as humans can do so much more for our horses just in the way that we train and think when we train.Anja has online courses now and if you have ever wanted to try classical dressage go to her website and have a look as there are a few to choose from. There are comprehensive ones and also ones that are broken down to just the canter. And if you think you have the wrong kind of horse for dressage then listen in as we discuss that as well. This was an inspiring talk and I do hope that I hope is one that can plant the seed and bring about real change in the dressage world for all horses. To connect with Anja you can follow the links below.ONLINE COURSES https://elopage.com/s/AnjaBeranWebsite https://www.anjaberan.de/enInstagram https://www.instagram.com/anjaberanfoundation/YouTube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC5DrV-LBVMm9eAzBcmqTAIQFacebook https://www.facebook.com/Classical-Equitation-by-Anja-Beran-556970431001651/© Copyrighted

You may even find the episode where I was a guest on their podcast talking about my life with horses and how this podcast and the conscious horse movement came about. In this episode I spoke with Mark Langley from Equine Ability. Mark is a man who grew up with horses and like so many from this podcast, started to question the training methods he had learned while travelling overseas. He saw a lot of push button horses that were shut down and he got curious as the driving pressure seemed to be shutting them down. And as happens so many times when you begin to question things, he was led to books written by Mark Rashid who gave him permission to take a different direction. He changed his main training method to “How can I help?” he realised that like Tom Dorrance said, a horse follows a feel not getting chased by it and his new way of training was born. It’s really interesting to hear that Mark began to see more shut down horses than ever when he started hosting clinics. We had a great conversation about shut down horses and he gives a lot of tips and examples and a lot of things to think about. And he made a great point, it’s us that shuts down horses, not pressure.I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did. The wonderful Lauren Arcay from Canada has joined the team and is doing the reaching out to guests for me and the podcast. The relief and joy I have of seeing a booking for a podcast interview come through into my emails is the best. So thank you Lauren for all you are doing it is so appreciated. In this episode, thanks to Lauren, I speak with Dr Sue Dyson. When I interviewed Dr Ann Bondi from The Saddle Research Trust she suggested I speak with Sue and I’m so glad that we found the time to speak with her because oh my she is out to change the horse world in a wonderful way. She has developed a tool on how to recognise the 24 behaviours indicating pain in the ridden horse. And she is backed by all the science you could possibly ever need.I could read out all Dr Sue Dyson has achieved in her lifetime thus far but it would probably take me 20 minutes to get through it all, and I’m not exaggerating! I’ll shorten it somewhat to give you an idea.Sue is a qualified vet who went on to specialise in clinical orthopaedics and lameness and poor performance in horses. Sue has been awarded fellowships PhD’s and is a Founding Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation.Sue has lectured internationally and published widely on equine orthopaedics and diagnostic imaging. She has published more than 310 refereed papers in scientific journals, relating to lameness and diagnostic imaging in the horse.Sue is a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the Equine Veterinary Journal, Equine Veterinary Education and acts as a regular peer reviewer for a large number of journals.Sue was been a long-standing member of Council of the British Equine Veterinary Association and is a past President. She has also been a long-standing member of the Board of the World Equine Veterinary Association and Vice-President.Sue has been awarded far too many prizes to list and has been made an honorary member of Societa Italiana Veterinari Per Equini (SIVE), Italy. Sue was inducted into the University of Kentucky Equine Research Hall of Fame.Sue also holds the Instructors and Stable Managers Certificates of the British Horse Society (BHSI) and has competed at advanced level in both horse trials and show jumping, producing horses that have subsequently competed successfully at the Olympic Games and World Equestrian Games. She is a former veterinary advisor to British Eventing. Sue is veterinary advisor to the Saddle Research Trust and to Moorcroft Equine Rehabilitation Centre. And that folks, is her CV cut down to about 5%.Sue as you can see is not only a vet but she is an accomplished horsewoman who knows that to find the real issue with a horse you must do the basic check that most vets do then you have to see the horse ridden to see if the rider has any biomechanical issues that are effecting the horse, then she may even ride the horse herself to see if those issues are still present with a balanced rider like herself.Sue’s tool that she has created will save you money on vet visits, it will give you an educated opinion for your vet to consider, and it may even help to educate your vet on how to deal with pain in horses.Sue has created a tool that we as horse owners need as we know there is an issue with our horse but no vet can find it. Well this tool can.I hope you enjoy this talk and I really hope you can spread the word about Sue’s creation as horses all over the world will benefit if you do.To connect with Sue herself you can email her sue.dyson@aol.comTo see the Ridden Pain Ethogram course click here© Copyrighted Tracy Malone

It was Paul Szauter from Equisec who recommended this book to me so thanks Paul, I bought it on audible and listened to it twice. For those who know my background in years gone by in Equine Assisted Counselling, this book is such a gem about the horse human relationship. The book is the true story of Ginger’s work on an alternative to prison ranch where she gets a phone call from residents who are part of the horse team who have horses that are dangerous and aggressive to the point of physical harm to the humans feeding them. Ginger heads out there and helps out. This book tells the story of the residents and horses that Ginger helps and how they grow and change together, beautifully wound with the telling of Ginger’s own story from her childhood. And as happens so many times when working with horses and humans in this way, Ginger found that she needed to be here helping these people and horses just as much as they needed her. She does not get paid for this work.I loved this book as I said before. Please read it or please listen to it on audible. It shows just how powerful the horse human relationship is. I believe it’s one of the most powerful and beautiful things on the planet. And reading this book shows me that I may just be right.Ginger is a pleasure to speak with, I was so happy to find out more about some of the people in the book, where they are now, did they make it or not. Ginger still helps out at the ranch when she can get there, due to Covid it’s been difficult. Thanks to Nina who on Instagram told me about Chris, once I took one look at his website I asked for an interview, I knew he’d have some gems for us all.Chris grew up in a home that was not safe and as a sensitive child honed his skills in reading body language like so many of us have done from these types of upbringing. He also learned that the lack of congruence was not safe either, what people are saying and their actions were not aligned, this does not allow us to relax, we cannot rest in our nervous system, we are living in our fight flight mode. We have choices in this situation as a child, fight, leave or shut down. A lot of people I know chose to shut down. Chris was brave enough to leave and this is what eventually led him to a life with horses. When Chris started working with horses people told him that it was not like he was learning to train horses, it looked like he was remembering horses. I believe this is the skills that he honed in his early life in a not safe environment about body language. Horses spoke his language and he spoke theirs.I have always believed that as horse people we are doing the best we can with the information we have, this is why I started the podcast, to get more information out into the world so that when we know better we can do better. There are some great gems in this conversation from Chris about body language that can help us do better. To connect with Chris please follow these linkswebsiteFacebook

Paul is a scientist. He is actually the Chief Scientific Officer of EquiSec who are one of the few places in the world you can test your horse for PSSM2.Recently I was made aware of a disease called PSSM1 in a friends horse, as she is my horse, Gypsy’s half-sister I got her tested as well as she was exhibiting some of the symptoms. Gypsy came back negative but as I am who I am and I do what I do, then my interest was peaked. And this happened because as I asked more and more people about PSSM1 I realised there was little to no awareness of this condition. So I decided to find someone who did have knowledge. This is how I came across Paul and his work. Most of the podcasts that I do are of value to share as they can support changes to training and handling of horses all over the world. This podcast is one of the most important ones for you to share as every single horse person in the world needs to be made aware of this disease and if you are ever buying a horse, this test needs to be done if your breed is on the long list that is knows to have had the disease. Together we can make a difference by talking about it with other horse owners and understanding the symptoms to look out for. This is especially important for trainers to be aware of as the gait abnormalities is something they will easily see when working with PSSM2 horses. So have a listen to the podcast, take it all in, and then please share and open our horse world up to PSSM 1 and 2 and let’s make a positive difference to the lives of horses. To connect with Paul and to see the videos we spoke about in the podcast please see the links below.Website: http://equiseq.com/index.phpEquiSeq's Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/EquiSeq1Paul's Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/paul.szauterPaul and the EquiSeq team are frequently on the following forums on Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/groups/202978353056065https://www.facebook.com/groups/833944333446431The videos we spoke of in the podcast are as followsLimb-Girdle Muscular Dystrophy 2A walking human https://youtu.be/TKL5krEsiVILimb-Girdle Muscular Dystrophy 2A Human rising from the ground https://youtu.be/uc5VJMrE0mcPSSM & MFM Symptoms - Horse at Canter https://youtu.be/EHXEPLEZOG0

Martin is a great trainer in his own right and also keeps up his own training, he is currently working under Steph Vincent to develop his in-hand work.I was lucky enough to attend one of Martin’s clinics in Brisbane about 5 years ago with my mare Gypsy. He works in such a gentle and intuitive way with horses and it is a true partnership and 2-way communication. In this conversation we talk about many things, one of them being what the word liberty really means and I’m so glad we did as it is something that I feel has been a little misused in the horse world. To be at liberty a horse is not just free of tack. I will read you the dictionary definition of liberty so you have something to ponder while listening to Martin’s story. It means the quality or state of being free. The power to do as one pleases. Freedom from physical restraint. Freedom from arbitrary or despotic control, despot means a ruler with absolute power and authority. The positive enjoyment of various privileges. The power of choice. So while you ponder that, sit back and enjoy this conversation. To connect with Martin please click on the links belowFacebookhttps://www.facebook.com/MartinContrerasHorseTrainingatLiberty/Instagramhttps://instagram.com/martin_contreras_horsemanship?igshid=1blrtdrmm7kghFor clinics, in-person or online Lessons, contact Martin via social media or at horsetrainingatliberty@gmail.com.

It’s a real privilege to speak with someone who has given so much to the gentle training of horses for so many years.Franklin as a boy found himself always seeking peace due to loudness in his life. This is how he came to connect with horses so well. He saw in them what he was looking for himself. He does not believe in bad horses, he also believes horses are always right. Franklin says horses when they react to something are in a state of fear, not disrespect, and you can be a great horseperson when you are able to realise that the horse is simply a peace seeker. So instead of punishing a horse or correcting a horse what you can do is lead the horse to a place within themselves of safety and peace. This is a beautiful conversation with a beautiful man and I hope you get as much out of it as I did.To connect with Franklin follow the links belowWebsite http://www.acourseinhorse.com/index.phpFacebook https://www.facebook.com/franklin.levinson

As you will all be aware there is a movement finally getting the air time it deserves, it’s the #blacklivesmatter movement and it’s important to take a moment to talk about it.As a white woman I have stayed quiet for some time as it is so difficult to know what to say. I want to speak up and out for black lives in both the US and Australia, but I don’t want to say the wrong thing or disrespect anyone. So I’ve donated to gofundme legal accounts for 3 Indigenous court cases looking to find answers to black deaths in custody. I post a lot on my personal social media pages and always speak up to those who post racist comments or get in on the all lives matter argument.I’ve since reached out to African American people in the horse world but they seem to be inundated at the moment and I don’t get any replies. I will keep trying, this does not have a time limit. If you know of any people of colour working with horses in any way please let me know.Usually I only interview people working in gentle and ethical ways with horses but I believe that there is racism in the horse world and it runs deep and that people of colour are not given the opportunities that we as white people have been given. They may not even know that our way exists. I also believe that in order to make change in the world we need to invite everyone in, especially those who are in the minority in the horse world. We can’t make change by excluding people because we see pain in the eyes of their horse or because we don’t like the way that they train. We make change by inviting those people in and with love and respect, hearing their story and introducing them to the possibilities. So if you know of anyone who would like to be heard and tell their story here on the podcast then please get in touch with me.You will notice in the intro of this podcast I do an acknowledgement of country. This is one way that I show respect at all times to the first Australian’s and their culture and people. I wanted to do it from the outset of my podcast but didn’t know exactly how to do it respectfully, so I waited until I interviewed Dr Tauri Simone and asked her advice.I do the acknowledgment of country as it is an aboriginal Australian creation that they use and have shared with us as white Australian’s, I believe that when you are given a gift of the culture of your land, the least you can do it use it with respect. I don’t make huge changes or do it my way. I show it the respect it deserves and deliver it in the way they have done for thousands of years.I searched for a long time when I started this podcast for indigenous horse trainers and found absolutely no one. In 2018 NAIDOC week which is an acronym for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee the theme was Because of her we can. This is where I saw the work of Dr Tauri Simone where she researched the influence of aboriginal women on the Australian pastoral industry. It took me weeks to find a contact for her as she is not on social media, I had to go through her university website then finally found her on linkedin. She then months later when she logged onto LinkedIn agreed to an interview and we arranged a time. It was always tricky as she lives on a station in Western Australia and may or may not have internet coverage on any given day or may be out bush working. But we got there eventually.I wanted to replay this interview once again as it is the one I am most proud of, in all the interviews I have done being able to bring the culture of the land I live on to the world makes me very proud. It is also important to hear what first Australian women endured when colonisation occurred. Tauri and I talked off mic about how she kept the interview and the story positive but the research and interviews and accounts she read during her research were heart breaking and she almost gave up so many times as the pain was so strong for what her ancestors endured at the hands of white man.So as you listen to this please know that while things are better for aboriginals today, they’re not that much better really and slavery and the stolen generation are the grandparents of young adult first Australians today. They carry a lot of trauma and some still have no idea where their family is.On a positive note in the podcast you can imagine what kind of women they were and how on earth they were able to ride horses at night to round up cattle who were on a blind run. It’s an amazing story on every level and I thank you for taking the time to listen to this episode. I’d also ask that this is the episode to share with friends, share the story of horse Australia was built and the extraordinary skill of these indigenous women.May we all come together and look back on this time as the moment we remember that the world truly changed to a kinder place and a safer place for all people of colour. If you'd like to support this podcast you can by going to www.patreon.com/comealongforhteridepodcast where you can become a subscriber and help me to keep this podcast going.© Copyrighted

This was the evening of day 1 of the clinic. I love doing solo interviews but I really love a live audience where everyone can be involved and great questions are asked, which is what happened here. So being October 2019 this was way before covid so groups of as many people as you like were allowed, it’s hard to remember that kind of time but it happened! I really loved the group that came along to this clinic. It was a place of such great conversation and learning and I’m so glad to be able to share this podcast with you today. If you’d like to learn more about Anna Blake you may want to listen to the first interview I did with her back in episode 22 of the podcast. To connect with Anna you can follow any of these linksIf you'd like to buy Anna's books then you can go to book depository here.To read Anna's blog, organise a session with her or see where her next workshop is you can go to her blog website. She also has an author website here.To connect with Petep Papp from peter and the Herd you can do so here.FacebookInstagram

    A Candid Conversation

Hi everyone. I’m coming into your ears for a different reason today. I usually always keep the narrative positive and dislike and negativity being used around my brand at any time. So I’m way out of my comfort zone here but it’s time to be brave and vulnerable and honest. You see I started this podcast and my business Eden River Equestrian a few years ago now. It had been a dream of mine for a very long time and it took the catalyst of my mother passing away and me doing the eulogy at her funeral for me to truly realise that life is way too short to not live your dreams. So I dived in and began this podcasting journey and it’s been amazing to be able to make such a positive change in the lives of so many horses from all over the world. My passion to build my business was to literally make the world a better pace by selling natural and sustainable products, sourcing products from trusted suppliers and making some myself with the planet that both us and our horses eat from and gain out nutritional needs from, was always in the forefront of my mind. However just like in life, things need to be sustainable in more ways than just the products that I have for sale and for the information given over this podcast. It needs to be sustainable for me, the person who spends my life putting countless hours into these passions. While life had taken a toll on my health last year, and then the breakdown of a relationship meant I had to stop for a few months. This year Eden River Equestrian and this podcast Come Along for the Ride need to be able to sustain me and my son and my horses and animals. Otherwise it needs to all be shut down. Because the truth is, it is not sustainable for me. I make absolutely no profit from these two ventures and I have been putting time and energy into them for over 2 years now. I am not only not profiting, but I am running at massive losses and as you know, this is not sustainable. If you could see the messages I get and the information that I give to people via email and messenger you would easily think I was making a hefty profit, people’s lives have been changed, horses have been saved as their humans finally wake up to another way. The trainers I interview and the sponsors on my podcast all do well financially from this venture and for this I am eternally grateful and very proud of the positive impact I have made. But to go on like this with no profit to myself is just another form of self-harm, and I’m done with this very dark part of my life and story. To continually give to others without receiving in return is no longer what I am willing to endure in any area of my life.So I am here to ask you, what needs to change? What does this podcast have to do, what changes does it have to make for you to give $5 a month? Or even $2 a month. I know by the messages I receive and the amount of continual downloads that the information is valuable. So I am truly asking you what will make the difference for you to go to patreon and give $5 a month. If everyone who listened to this podcast gave $5 a month, I would be having a totally different conversation with you right now. For those who now support me and have done through this whole journey, my truly heartfelt thanks. You are the reason I have been able to come this far and have been able to make a difference. You are my people and I thank you every day.I’d also love to know what Eden River Equestrian can do for you to make the choice to purchase from the website. The amount of people, even friends who ask for advice about feeding and herbs and then make the choice to buy their herbs form somewhere else is quite honestly breathtaking. I’d love to know what you want me to provide for you that you would be willing to purchase? Tell me what your values are, what do you regularly buy that you want me to stock. How can I make this business turn a profit to then be able to make an even bigger change to the lives of horses? You see my dream was so much bigger than a podcast and a website. I truly know how to go about making a global positive change for horses. But to do anything like this takes investment, not just of time but resources. It’s a very vulnerable decision to put this out there and ask these questions and ask for your help and honesty. But it came to the point of do this or disappear. If it is time to shut it down then I will do so quietly and I will do something else. I am a creative person who is able to turn my hand at anything and a new idea will come and I will make it happen as I always do.I will pick myself up and go on, I just can’t go on like this.So please send me and email to info@edenriverequestrian.com or shoot me a dm through my socials and let me know what needs to change and if the changes are possible I promise to make them. Thanks for taking the time to listen to this all the way through. I appreciate it and truly hope to be able to serve you better in the future.

I’d love for you to consider it it’s at patreon.com/comealongfortheridepodcastIn this episode I speak with Jane Myers from Equiculture. Jane and her husband Stuart created the Equicentral system of managing horse properties in a sustainable way out of Stuarts constant questing of why things are done a certain way. Why do we have to take the hay out to the horse, why can’t they come in for it? In the coming years they have refined and are continually adding new information to this amazing system. We talk about so many of my favourite topics, soil, regenerative farming methods, manure and dung beetles, mulch and how you too can make a huge difference to your horse property.I’ve been an organic gardener for over 10 years now so I was a kid in a candy store in this conversation but the best part for me was that in the course of this conversation Jane converted my entire mindset from horses are bad for the land and environment to horses are great for the environment, bad management makes them look bad but they are not.I hope you get some great insights and tips from this interview as I did.To connect with Jane please follow any of the links below.Website: www.equiculture.netFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/equicultureJaneMyersTwitter: https://twitter.com/EquicultureJaneInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/horseridersmechanic/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/EquicultureandHorseRidersMechanicPinterest: https://www.pinterest.co.uk/janem5144/Linked in: www.linkedin.com/in/jane-myers-equiculture© TracyMalone

He believes you are the perfect person to train your horse. The great part about talking to Warwick for me is that his story reminded me of why I started this podcast and brought me back to my core values as a horse person. I believe that we have such an influence on horses by what we are holding in our bodies and minds and we bring it to them every time we approach or train or ride them.He also reminded me that horses really want one thing only from us and that is our presence.I didn't want to get into training specifics with Warwick as such as he gives you all of this online already. I wanted to know about his personal story on his change in who he is and how he does things. Tauri is not only an incredibly well-educated woman, she is also a stockwoman, who lives in the outback of western Australia on a property that is 1.3 million acres. She musters cattle, no longer on horseback, but she used to. She lives a privileged life compared to the women she writes about. In this interview you will hear how it is for a stockwoman now and how it was for those who came before her. It’s a fascinating story for any horse lover to hear how these women trained and rode horses to round up cattle and jump off their horses and spear tackle cattle!Taurie is a brave woman choosing to tell this story, her legacy is that she is telling the story as something for aboriginal people to be proud of. She leaves out most of the atrocities as the trauma does not need to be opened again, but the story of these unbelievably resilient and capable women, must live on.I believe, this is the type of story that we need to keep telling to begin the healing of colonialism and to move forward as one people. To read Dr Tauri Simone's full paper you can go to this link and download the pdf and have a good read. please have a read, let's all keep these stories that matter circulating so they can't be lost.

Her family were well known horse people and she was able, through hard work and support from her family, to go through the ranks of the horse world and work at a high level of dressage, to the highest level of natural horsemanship where she worked internationally with Pat and Linda Parelli among many other internationally renowned trainers.Mel is one of those people who keeps asking questions, she never settles for less. It seems she needs to go deep and make sure the horse is alright on every level as her deep need to connect fully with the horse and make a true partnership comes before the end performance result she is seeking. This is what has taken Mel all over the world developing her skills as she goes, the need to find someone who has the answers to her questions. In asking these questions Mel has been able to form her own style of horsemanship. On her website she says. “I think that true horsemanship is horsemanship from the horse’s perspective. What would horse’s call horsemanship and who would horses call a horseman?”“TRUE HORSEMANSHIP means putting yourself in the horse’s skin, seeing things through their eyes, thinking how they are thinking and feeling how they are feeling. Going beyond merely perceiving them as prey animals and knowing the individual beings (the spirits) that they are. In equal proportion to understanding the spirit of who horses are, true horsemanship also means understanding their physical bodies, so they can be ridden with true balance and healthy biomechanics. This is the only way that the ridden horse can stay sound, be healthy, be calm and yet responsive, enjoy their work and maximise their performance. This is what “Connecting with Horses & Riding with Synchronicity” strives to achieve.”Mel has the ability and the formula to go deep into each horse and help build a bond between horse and rider that is strong, and because of the biomechanics element, long lasting and sound. You can find out when Mel is coming to a town near you on her website and you can follow her on Facebook.Mel will open your mind to the difference between the use of techniques versus true connection when working with horses. She will challenge your current beliefs around horsemanship, and that can only be a good thing. I love learning more about true connection and Mel certainly gave me a lot to consider.I hope you enjoy this interview as much as I did.

Click here to connect with Peter and the Herd.Angela Davison is The Horse Herbalist, she has spent her life and career with horses in many different ways. Starting out in showjumping in her native country of England, she came to Australia to visit her Dad and decided to make a life here.Angela was one of the first licensed female jockeys in Australia. Now her story up until this point would make an excellent episode in itself. However, it gets even more interesting when she decided, after seeing so many horses who were not able to be helped by modern medical methods, when she herself was always back on the horse quite fast from her chiropractic treatments and the herbal remedies that her chiropractor gave her, to go on and study herbalism and body work for both humans and horses. This led her to a career of giving back to horses in quite a fascinating way. Angela took 7 years to develop a technique she calls hair testing. This is not taking hair and putting it into a machine and getting a report back. This is about connection with the horse on a deep level to find the cause of the symptom. In herbalism Angela learned how to treat the whole being instead of just the symptom so she developed this method to give her this edge and be able to get real results faster than she could without them. There was no need to do hundreds of dollars worth of tests to try and find the problem, she created a method to get right to the source. It might all sound a bit hard to believe, but after 20 years of results and thousands of cases of success under her belt, Angela is definitely the real deal. As a Horse Herbalist Angela has treated top performance horses including the partnership she sponsors Shannan Goodwin and her horse Astro who are competing in dressage at Grand prix level. This episode is full of great information for how we can all understand our horses a bit better and see them as whole beings. But the best part, for me, was hearing all of the stories of horses that she helped along the way. She tells such great stories of the results she has gained for horses all over the world from all disciplines and breeds. You can find more information on Angela and her hair testing and products at her website. And you can follow her on her Facebook page.

Peter has had communication with my mare Gypsy, who is the mare with me in the podcast picture and he was spot on about everything so I can highly recommend his work personally. Click here to connect with Peter and the Herd. This weeks episode is with Dominique Day, Dominique has a business called Equiosity which she runs with Alexandra Kurland, who was one of the original people in the world to bring positive reinforcement training to the horse world. Together they do a podcast called Equiosity as well as online courses and webinars. Dominique was one of the creators of Cavalia and it’s a wonderful story to hear about how it all began, but it is certainly not the most interesting part of her story. She has had a wonderful progression from watching more traditional methods of horse training into positive reinforcement. Keeping strong with her gut feeling and knowing there must be a better way, you may very well be able to relate to this very closely. You are going to love this story as much as I did recording it.Dominique Day on FacebookEquiosity website where you will also find the Equiosity podcast.

Hi everyone, it’s wonderful to be back in your ears again. A huge Happy New year to you all, may this new decade bring joy and love and abundance to us all.First I’d like to say thank you to our Patreon subscribers. As it’s a new year I want to shout out to all of you. So a big thank you to Amanda Phillips, Amy Lopez, Belinda Daws, Elisa Mansfield, Kathryn O’Bree, Liz Ehrich, Peter Papp, Rachel Beddingfield and Signe of Horses. You all mean the world to me and I am so grateful that you are on this ride with me literally. Please remember our small business patrons. Belinda Daws is an incredible Connection Training Coach who is calm, confident and incredibly skilled, Belinda can help you with training your horse just like she has helped me with mine. I can highly recommend her beautiful coaching work.A huge shout out to our other small business patron Peter Papp from Peter and the Herd. Peter has just had to evacuate his beautiful herd due to bushfires where he is living. His community came together to help out and it was so beautiful to watch as they all worked to get his horses to safety well before the fires got close.Peter does with equine behaviour and trauma recovery. Equine communication. Human and horse relationship building. I had a reading myself with Peter and I found him to be completely spot on with his insights. It’s a great way to support him through these bushfires and trying times is to support his business. You can find the links to both Belinda and Peter in the show notes. You may remember from the last episode my life is in a bit of turmoil at the moment. At the end of last year I separated from my partner and Oliver and I are staying with my sister down in the Riverina in NSW for now until we can get some finances together to get back to Qld and start a new life. I’ve learned an enormous amount in the last few months about other people not behaving in the way you do. I thought we could separate and have an adult conversation and divide assets and work to both thrive and move on through a difficult time. I was very very wrong. Even though I am going through a steep learning curve, Oliver and I are very safe, safe from harm and safe from the fires raging in Australia at the moment. We drove about 1500km from Qld down to the Riverina along the coast and I saw the devastation from the fires first hand. The fires had crossed highways and burned so much land, it was black for about 30km with small patches of green where they had worked so hard and saved houses in the middle of these catastrophic fires. We were nowhere near the fires as we travelled but the smoke was everywhere. There were no days travelling when I did not wake to be reminded of the destruction happening to people, animals and especially the native animals that were unable to flee.In Australia now people have just got into action to help horse owners get the supplies they so desperately need. If you are in Australia please check with your local Vet, produce store or Horseland, these are a few who are taking donations for horse people and shipping them to those in need.I have also set up a gofundme page for Horse Owners Affected by Australian Bushfires. I will put the link in the show notes. https://www.gofundme.com/f/horse-owners-affected-by-australian-bushfires?utm_source=customer&utm_medium=copy_link&utm_campaign=p_cp+share-sheetKnow that every dollar you give will go directly to horse owners in need. As we reach our goal of $5,000 I will get the funds to where it is needed and it will be completely transparent. Then we can set about raising our next $5,000 and so on until we have done all that we can for horse owners who have been through this devastation. I would be donating profits of my own business to the cause but I’ve had to shut the business down as I’m so far away and unable to run it at this time. So if you have been to the site and wondering why everything says out of stock, it’s simply that I am not able to function it at this time. But know that I will be back, and this is going to be an amazing year for us all. A new year, a new decade, although things are difficult for so many, I still feel that we will come together and make it amazing. In all that has happened so far this year to me and those in the bush fires here in Australia. I wanted to start this years podcast with a truly inspirational story. Now I know that, like me, your blood may very well boil at how this horse went blind. However, what I have learned in the past few months of what I have been through personally is that you can’t live your life looking backwards into the past and expecting change, anger at the past gets you absolutely nowhere. It keeps you locked into the past and unable to see into and manifest the future that your heart truly desires. So take a few deep breaths through that part then allow your heart and mind to be opened by the amazing story of Ashlyn Dyer and her beautiful horse Wintara Cadence or as she calls her Cady. Cady is a blind horse who Ashlyn now takes out to dressage shows. It is such a beautiful and inspirational story and I hope you get as much out of this story as I did. Link to Ashlyn's Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/Wintara-Cadence-Cady-1537936826339698/Belinda Daws’ website is journeyequine.com and you can find her on all the usual social Facebook, Instagram and twitter. You can find Peter Papp from Peter and the Herd through his Facebook page Peter and the herd or his Instagram by the same name.

Hi everyone, it’s so great to be back in your ears again. I have to tell you that I have been going through, and still am going through, one of the most difficult times of my life right now. I can’t say too much publicly but I will put a video up under the paywall of Patreon so those who are subscribers can know what is going on. So if I’m a bit all over the place with getting a podcast up, please hang in there with me. It’s not deliberate, just know I’m doing the best that I can right now.I’d love to tell you about one of our wonderful patrons Peter Papp, Peter is a small business patron who gets his business promoted on every podcast and on my social media pages. Peter’s business is Peter and the Herd. He works with equine behaviour and trauma recovery. Equine communication. Human and horse relationship building. Peter was kind enough to do a reading or communication session with my mare Gypsy, it was fantastic, he told me things that only I could understand and how Gypsy would like more fun in her life but she understands, so even when Peter had no idea what I was going through, he as able to give me a beautiful message from my girl that she does know what I’m going through and at the other side can we have some fun please? Peter was also able to speak to me about her pain and where it was happening, a few weeks later I had an osteo look over Gypsy and she confirmed what Peter said. So I can personally highly recommend Peter and his work. You can find Peter through his Facebook page Peter and the herd or his Instagram by the same name. Our other small business patron is Belinda Daws from Journey Equine. Belinda is based on the Gold Coast and can travel to surrounding areas. Belinda is a Connection Training Coach who is calm, gentle and a very knowledgeable trainer, so much so that she is my trainer for me and my girls. I’d love for you to consider it it’s at patreon.com/comealongfortheridepodcastIn this episode I speak with Caroline Ingraham who does something completely amazing it’s called zoopharmacognosy, so what is that? Caroline will explain it much more eloquently than me but for now let me just say that it is something that is in the dna of all animals, domestic or otherwise and it is the ability for them to heal themselves through offering them plant extracts that would contain the same or similar constituents to those found in an animals natural environment. This kind of work amazes me as this is how I believe we can make a huge difference in the lives of our horses, we just need to know how. This is a conversation not only about horses but also about a baby elephant Caroline was flown from the UK to help, and the way she helped was beautiful and the elephant made a full recovery. This is, I believe, a text book that is essential reading for all horse owners, even the ones who do not believe in positive reinforcement. A lot of you may believe in affirmative training, but not the use of treats, that’s ok, there is still so much for you to learn from this book. And if you still use negative reinforcement, then you really need to listen to this podcast and then get to amazon and purchase the book. This has the science behind how horses learn. It speaks about calming signals. Rachel spent time presenting with Rachel Draisma on Calming Signals, she has spent many years researching the best possible way to train horses, and her daughter Hanna has spent the time taking the research to the horses and putting it into practice and making it fun for both horses and humans. The book is full of pictures and practical things you can take to your horses right now. It’s not the kind of book you read and put down and wonder what to do next. It has step by step guides and plenty of video resources and also a club you can join at the end if you feel you need more support.Let’s get into this interview, it’s not surprisingly, a long one. I read this book and had a lot of questions, but I also wanted to give you a good feel for what you are getting in this book and why it’s a must read.To buy the book go to www.amazon.comYou can connect with Rachel and Hannah hereWebsiteFacebookInstagramYouTube

Monty teaches classical dressage through positive reinforcement, so she is a trainer after my own heart. The best way to introduce her is to read directly from her website, this is a quote from her home page. This quote is by Nuno Oliveira from 1961"I believe that there are two categories of equestrians, those who, while skilled, use the horse as a tool, and those who love him and allow him to express the brilliance of which he is capable. The former are not less expert than the latter. During dressage tests they may even triumph although never taking the risk of making a mistake when the opportunity to yield with the hand occurs and lightness presents itself. The latter always risk being the damned poets of this art. They are misunderstood by the masses of riders who cannot distinguish between the means used by the former or those of the latter.Only the latter enjoy the true pleasure of feeling how a creature cooperates without constraint, as a friend."It’s a bit special and a beautiful way to introduce the wonderful Monty Gwynne. To connect with Monty you can do so through these linkshttps://www.equispeak.com/contacthttps://www.youtube.com/user/d1fairyhttps://www.facebook.com/equispeak.positive.reinforcement.training/To connect more with our community here at Come Along for the Ride Podcast please follow one fo the links belowhttps://www.patreon.com/comealongfortheridepodcasthttps://edenriverequestrian.com/https://www.facebook.com/CAFTRPodcast/https://www.facebook.com/groups/376101009782763/https://twitter.com/CAFTRPodcasthttps://www.instagram.com/comealongfortheride/

She also shares with us the story of how she was one of first people in the world to use positive reinforcement training with horses. And of course she got to start right at the top with international show jumpers! She also got offered to spend time with Tom Dorrance, one of the creators of the natural horsemanship movement. She could literally have changed his world and the natural horsemanship movement, but I’ll let her tell you that story herself. It would be easy to think that Shawna might have a bit of ego at play with all of her years of extraordinary experience, but of course, she is true to this training movement and like all of the other trainers I have interviewed, she is great because of her lack of ego. So he is not a desk bound scientist, he is a real horseman who has a passion for equitation science and debunking myths that are out there around some methods of training.I believe it’s important for us as conscious horse people to keep up to date with this kind of science so we can have real conversations with people who think we are all a bit woo woo in our methods.
