Mare reproductive challenges can range from endometritis to ovarian irregularities such as hemorrhagic anovulatory follicles, ovarian hematomas, and persistent corpora lutea, all of which can disrupt normal cycles and fertility. Older mares often face anatomical complications that increase contamination and impair conception. Hormonal tumors such as granulosa-theca cell tumors might spur erratic behaviors and cycle abnormalities, while pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID, formerly Cushing's disease) can further dampen reproductive performance by causing abnormal cycles, anovulation, and recurring endometritis. Vigilant diagnostics—including ultrasound, hormone panels, and uterine evaluation—are essential in identifying and managing these issues efficiently. During this Ask TheHorse Live Q&A two experts answer your questions about common mare reproductive problems. This episode is sponsored by Equithrive. About the Experts: Carleigh Fedorka, PhD, assistant professor of equine reproductive physiology at Colorado State University, in Fort Collins, is a global expert in reproductive immunology. She has focused her research on understanding the relationship between the immune system and the reproductive tract, evaluating the efficacy of treatments on various reproductive disorders, and discovering biomarkers for reproductive health. Fedorka earned her BS degree from St. Lawrence University, in Canton, New York, and her PhD in Veterinary Sciences from the University of Kentucky, in Lexington, after working in the industry as a manager of a commercial Thoroughbred breeding farm. She maintains a presence in the equine industry by retraining countless off the track Thoroughbreds, including her personal event horses Judge Johnny (JJ) and Strike Two (Jeter). In her spare time, she enjoys fly fishing, spending time with her husband and their dog, and cheering on the Buffalo Bills.Jenna Ward, DVM, Dipl. ACT, is a clinician and lecturer in large animal reproduction at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center, in Kennett Square. She earned her DVM at Texas A&M University, in College Station. Ward's research includes stallion reproductive health and genetic-related embryonic loss in horses.
Lifelong horse industry veteran, Jeff Hooper, CEO of Highlander Training Center, joins the podcast to discuss how their program is redefining Thoroughbred racing far from Kentucky bluegrass country and deep in the heart of East Texas.

In this installment of RRP Trainer Chronicles, an OTTB on Tap Original Series, we catch up with returning trainer Chelsey O'Brien as her 2025 RRP Makeover journey takes shape. This year, Chelsey is retraining two very different OTTBs—each with their own story and style.✨ Peppy (JC name: The Pepsodent Show) has stepped into the hunter ring, showing the elegance Thoroughbreds can bring to the discipline. His second Makeover division is still undecided, but one thing is certain—he'll be available for adoption through Pastured Place after the competition, ready to shine in a new home. ✨ Fuzzy Wuzzy, her fiery mare “built like a French Bulldog,” is tackling barrels and ranch work—proving that OTTBs can excel in Western arenas just as much as English ones.Chelsey opens up about how she decided which disciplines fit each horse, the obstacles they've faced along the way, and how she balances her roles as a trainer, breeder, and mom. She also takes us behind the scenes at the Virginia Thoroughbred Association Yearling Futurity, where she proudly presented homebred colts and fillies just a year after foaling them out. With her philosophy of striving to be 1% better every day, and her belief that training is an art form, Chelsey shares one of her go-to OTTB training tips that listeners can put into practice. If you love stories of OTTB versatility, retraining insights, and the heart behind the Retired Racehorse Project Makeover, this episode is a must-listen.

We're back with Stephanie Parkot for round two of her RRP Trainer Chronicles journey—and wow, what a summer she and her OTTB Sterling Honor (by Honor Code, from New Vocations) have had. From tackling a Mounted Police Clinic with her son to braving the atmosphere of the Erie County Fair Hunter/Jumper Show, Stephanie shares the highs, the challenges, and the big takeaways as she and Sterling prepare for the 2025 RRP Makeover.Noise sensitivity, buddy sour moments, show-ring chaos—Sterling has tested her patience in all the classic OTTB retraining ways. But he's also shown just how much heart Thoroughbreds bring when given a chance. Stephanie breaks down what's working, from earplugs to confidence-building hacks, and why figuring out her horse's “comfort zone” has been such a game-changer.And remember that mounting block dance from her first episode? That's now a success story. Stephanie walks us through how she taught Sterling to stand still for mounting—a small detail with huge safety implications for any OTTB rider. As always, Stephanie keeps it real about balancing family life, motherhood, and horse training, sharing how a supportive husband, a training log, and even a backyard-built water obstacle are helping her get ready for Kentucky. With her trademark “flexible consistency” and a clear focus on progress over perfection, she's proof that the road to the Makeover is just as rewarding as the event itself.Photo by Megan Pattern

Horse racing was the most popular sport in early America, drawing massive crowds and fueling a cultural obsession with horses’ speed and pedigree. In the early 1800s, every town in America with a few thousand people had a horse racing track, with major cities drawing crowds of up to 50,000. In the midst of this was Alexander Keene Richards (1827–1881), one of the nineteenth century’s most significant Thoroughbred importers and breeders. Richards was like automotive designer Carroll Shelby, Matt Damon’s character in Ford v. Ferrari, who revolutionized the sport by blending innovation with a relentless drive to perfect the breeding and training of Thoroughbreds. Today’s guest is Gary Odell, author of Reinventing the American Thoroughbred: The Arabian Adventures of Alexander Keene Richards. We explore how Richards traveled thousands of miles on expeditions into the heart of the Syrian desert to obtain Arabian stock of the purest blood. He became the first American to venture into the desert to bargain directly with nomadic tribesmen for their horses. The Civil War interrupted Richards’s equine breeding experiment. After the war, he was bankrupt and spent the rest of his life attempting to rebuild his Thoroughbred facility. But Richards’ willingness to look globally for solutions—traveling to the Middle East for superior bloodlines—parallels today’s international talent scouting and cross-cultural exchanges in sports, fostering a legacy of globalized athletic improvement that shapes how American sports, from horse racing to other disciplines, prioritize scientific innovation and cultural adaptability.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode: Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis just slashed millions of dollars in funding for river restoration, public radio, and well-behaved inmates who want to phone their families. But the Republican governor also approved pork-barrel projects supporting the Inter Miami Major League Soccer team, owners and breeders of thoroughbred racehorses, and a giant real-estate developer near Daytona Beach. We take a closer look at what DeSantis decided to veto — and, more importantly, what he chose to approve — in Florida's new $115 billion state budget. So you're going to have groups — like there's a group in New York City, Success Academy, and they've been able to do very well in New York City, which is very tough because the unions want to kill charter schools up there and the elected officials are negative — they're going to be able to go in the most dire areas of Florida and open up these schools and potentially change people's lives for the better…I'm glad we were able to work with the Legislature to get that through in this extended session.”Civics Seal of Excellence teacher training“We created this Civics Seal of Excellence program.
