This episode features an in-depth, personal conversation with Tik Maynard, an elite-level eventer, trainer, clinician, and author. Tik's balanced and artful approach to horsemanship is changing the way trainers prepare sport horses for their work, in many different disciplines. His first book, "IN THE MIDDLE ARE THE HORSEMEN", is a favorite among horse owners across the globe. In this episode, Tik talks with Helena about competing in this year's Road to the Horse colt-starting contest (a somewhat unusual goal for an eventer), what he expects to get out of the experience, his competitive career, his horses, the growth of Liberty training, and how all of it will fit into the pages of his next book. Listen in! This episode is brought to you by: AMERICAN STALLS Feature photo credit: Shannon Brinkman

This is Episode 14 of Season Three. And in it, we give Wise Ass Wallace the mic again to talk about two juicy topics: helmets and colt starting competitions. Wise Ass got some help from the likes of Mark Rashid and Amy Skinner on the colt starting bit. And around helmets, he had some communication with the board of the Best Horse Practices Summit. WiseAss is having his day because of what Jec and I see as a troubling trend we are in the horse world. There seems to be an increased focus on what we're calling the warm and fuzzies. We define the warm and fuzzies as strategies, practices, ideas, methods, and proclamations that may indeed serve the human and her need to feel connected and in a relationship, but don't serve the horse. Or, even worse, they confuse or neglect the horse. We sometimes see this audience sucked into the belief that they are making real connection and real progress with their horses. The reality looks a whole lot different; the horse is left in the dark and the so-called journey is nefarious at best. The result is a whole lot of sanctimonious feel-good sessions among this population of warm and fuzzy followers. How is the horse helped and what's getting accomplished? We are not sure. WiseAssWallace is a long-time, beloved guest columnist for Cayuse Communications. From his pasture in southwestern Colorado, he's on a quest to improve horse-human connections and make lives better for his fellow equines. WiseAssWallace has a series of videos and articles which we will link to in the show notes. In this episode, we're featuring two short pasture monologues. WiseAss has an entire library of recordings, videos, and articles. We'll link to them in the show notes. Our title sponsor is Lucerne Farms, producers of quality forage feeds. Forage is chopped, packaged hay. Sometimes it's alfalfa, sometimes timothy, sometimes blended, and sometimes with a touch of molasses. Always scrumptious. After hay and grass, it's pretty much the best alternative and a great way to supplement your winter feeding. Check them out at here or at your local feed story. And thank you, Redmond Equine and Pharm Aloe – two sponsors with no-nonsense products for your horses. Check out links to their pages in our show notes. We thank Patagonia WorkWear for their continued support. And, hey, we have a Donation Page set up. If you get something of value from our podcast, please drop a tip in the jar for us. We sure would appreciate it. That's it. Another episode in the can and out of the barn. Thanks for listening, y'all!

Craig is a first generation horseman from Cornville, Arizona. He started riding as at thirteen years old and competed in high school and college rodeo. He then went on to work for a couple of horse trainers and found a passion for working with horses and personal development. Craig has successfully competed in roping events, obstacle challenges, and Extreme Mustang Makeover events. He was a 2021 Wildcard for Road To The Horse and while he didn't gain a title from that, he did gain many new fans and friends from the experience. Craig currently lives in May, Texas and trains client horses with his wife Katie. They enjoy training horses and attending competitions. One weekend they might be team roping and the next weekend they might be at a Ranch Horse show or performing a freestyle act with their mustangs. They enjoy helping horses and people as much as they possibly can.

In this week’s episode I’m thrilled to bring you day 3 of the EQUITANA Australia VIP super ticket holder sessions where I was the MC for the event. In this episode you will hear from Vicki Wilson from New Zealand, Vicki competes at the highest level of show jumping, she starts horses and also does Equine Therapy, by that I mean body work for horses. In my opinion Vicki is changing the way people all over the world, see horses with what they consider to be bad behaviour. In 2017, Vicki Wilson was the first New Zealander to win the coveted World Championship colt starting competition at the Road to the Horse in the USA. Vicki named her horse Kentucky and brought him home. Their journey is an inspiring story of a friendship which will take them together into the future, this story you can read on Vicki’s website. Vicki went on to win the Road to the Horse 2018, making her the back-to-back World Champion of Colt Starting.Vicki has a load of firsts at The Road to the Horse, but the one I personally love the most, is that she is the first person to ever use body work on their colt. That’s the change she is making to the world of horse people, she shows them how you can take a difficult horse to being quiet and responsive by understanding them and alleviating any pain they are feeling. On this panel there is also Dave Manchon from The Rooftop Express Show, David has an incredibly entertaining show that he wows audiences with all over Australia, I saw him and his team a few years ago at the local show and it was lots of fun, his show at EQUITANA is next level entertainment, if you ever get a chance to see them please do yourself a favour and get there. In his spare time he is a professional horse trainer with his business flex horse training. With David on this panel is his little sidekick Bella Southern who is 9 years old and also his long-time mate and also a part of his show Anthony Cootes. These guys are a lot of fun but don’t be fooled, they are very experienced horse people in their own right and have a lot to give to those around them. This is another great day and the thanks has to go to EQUITANA Australia for putting on a great event and allowing me to be a part of it. And also, allowing me to record these sessions and share them with you. Here are all the links you will need to get in touch with these guestsVicki Wilson - Website, Facebook, Instagram, YouTubeDavid Manchon - Rooftop Express Show on Facebook, Instagram, Flex Horse Training FacebookTo see pictures of the day please go to my website www.comealongfortheride.com.au/blog
Elise’s guest on today’s Because of Horses podcast is the renowned trainer, clinician, and competitor, Stacy Westfall. Stacy’s remarkable style of riding without a bridle or a saddle has set the bar for true horsemanship. Though the list of championships and purses is far too long to detail, here are just a few highlights from Stacy’s incredible career: in 2003, she won the National Reining Horse Association Freestyle competition riding without a bridle; she went undefeated for two years straight in major US freestyle Reining competitions; in 2006 she won twice while riding without a bridle or a saddle; and she was also inducted into the National Cowgirl Hall of Fame in 2012, and has been on the cover of magazines like Horse & Rider. One of her biggest accomplishments was her 2006 All-American Quarter Horse Congress Freestyle competition that created an absolute sensation. She dedicated her ride to her father who passed away only days prior and the video went viral online. She won with a score of 239, the highest score ever recorded — and of course, did it without a bridle or saddle. Stacy has also appeared on the Emmy Award-winning Ellen Degeneres Show, even teaching Ellen to ride her beloved Quarter Horse mare, Roxy. These days, Stacy and her husband, Jessie, own and operate Westfall Horsemanship; a training facility in Ohio where they live with their three boys. Stacy gives clinics, trains horses, produces DVDs, and continues to compete and perform in exhibitions. Thursday March 16th Noon CDT on EQUESTRIAN LEGACY RADIO with host Gary Holt and Jennifer Denison Our special guest on the CAMPFIRE CAFE' are David Wilkie and Denise Withnell of the Award Winning group, Cowboy Celtic. David, the founder of Cowboy Celtic, has been tracking down the roots of cowboy music all the way to the Celtic isles for more than a decade. As Wilkie has discovered, the cattle industry has been going on in Scotland and Ireland for hundreds of years, and cattlemen from Ireland and Scotland brought their culture and musical traditions with them when they moved to North America. The music of Cowboy Celtic demonstrates that those traditions live on in the cowboy songs of today. Cowboy Celtic, centered in Turner Valley, Alberta, includes David on mandolin and vocals, Denise on guitar and vocals, Keri Lynn Zwicker on harp and vocals, and Joseph Hertz on fiddle. Their second CD, “Cowboy Ceilidh,” won the National Cowboy Hall of Fame Wrangler Award for Outstanding Traditional Western Music Album in 1999. They were the first Canadians to ever win this award. “This is more than music. It's theatre and imagery and history and storytelling and more, all wrapped up in sagebrush and tartan.” We're pleased to welcome Denise Withnell and David Wilkie to the CAMPFIRE CAFE' Get Ready for the Ride as we Saddle Up with Tootie Bland, Owner & Producer of ROAD TO THE HORSE, on SADDLE UP AMERICA!
