In this latest episode of The Para Dressage Podcast we talk to Denmark's superstar Tobias Thorning Jorgensen, the current Paralympic, World and European Individual and Freestyle Grade III champion. Tobias reflects on his career to date, his successful defence of his European titles in Spetember 2023, and on his hopes for Paris 2024.
In this episode of The Para Dressage Podcast we talk once again to Denmark's former para Dressage World and European Champion, and Paralympic medallist, Stinna Tange, to look ahead to this week's FEI Para Dressage Championships, taking place in Reisenbeck, Germany. Normally Stinna and I would be at the Championships together, writing about it for the FEI, but I'm away so she'll be doing that, brilliantly, on her own. We discuss the riders and horses to look out for, and make our predictions regarding potential medallists. My lack of preperation is fully exposed! Good luck to all the riders taking part this week, and Stinna and I will get together in the next few weeks to see how we did (she'll be better than me). And just a warning, there are a couple of times where my sound is a bit dodgy. Hang in there though as it's only temporary!
It's Mothers' Day in The Para Dressage Podcast world as we speak to Canada's Lauren Barwick and Great Britain's Natasha Baker about the challenges of balancing global Para Dressage careers with motherhood. Lauren is Mum to nearly six-year old Viola and one year old Braxen, while Natasha celebrated the birth of her first child, Joshua, just a few months ago. They discuss their parenting methods, the importance of a good team to support and, in a first for The Para Dressage Podcast, we use the words 'correct bra equipment'. Happy PDPC Mothers' Day!
This was a fun one. Recorded at the Hong Kong Jockey Club's Sha Tin Racecourse, site of the equestrian competitions at the Beijing 2008 Olympic and Paralympic Games. There I met with Hong Kong's multi Paralympic and World Championships competitor Natasha Tse, a Grade I rider. We talked about her career which dates back to London 2012, where she was the youngest rider to compete, the burgeoning success of the Hong Kong team and her frequent flights to and from Europe, and her hopes for Paris 2024.
In this latest episode of The Para Dressage Podcast we speak again to The Netherlands' European, World and Paralympic multi-gold medal winning Sanne Voets. We look back on Sanne's global championship breakthrough ten years ago, at the 2013 European Championships, her prpgress since then, her hopes for this year's Europeans in september and, of course, Paris 2024. She also talks about her recent visit to the Paris 2024 Equestrian venue - Versailles - and how that has fired her up for next year even more.
After a bit of a break, which I explain, we're back with a new episode of The Para Dressage Podcast. This interview with Amanda Bond, chair of the FEI's Para Dressage Technical Committee, took place at the beginning of the year but is still relevant as she talks about the new competition rules and formats which have been in place since the start of the season.
Is this the most expensive sport?? At a young age Emma Booth was lucky enough to win free horse riding lessons for a year and never looked back, putting her heart and soul into the sport. In 2013 on the way back from a competition Emma's car was hit by a truck on the Melba Highway which caused spinal injury and would change the trajectory of her life but also lead to her representing her country. Emma embarked on a new goal of becoming a Paralympian in time for the 2016 Rio Games travelling all over the world to find the perfect horse, Emma's long journey of finding the perfect 4 legged partner resulted in a trip ten minutes down the dirt road at home. Today on track for the Paris 2024 Games, Emma shares the highs and lows participating in the sport not only physically but mentally, the criticism of her sport on social media and the financial investment of her chosen career. I flipped, hit him with my leg, changed my rotation in the air and landed on my back. I severed my spinal cord and became permanently paralyzed from the waist down.” In this podcast we talk about her recovery, (which she describes as ongoing), why it took her so long to feel comfortable on a horse again, dating and marriage as a paraplegic, identity and self worth, occupational therapy, and developing a new product to increase freedom for wheelchair users. In this episode you will hear from Emma Booth who is a truly extraordinary human being. She has represented Australia at the Olympics and this year at WEG as a para equestrian.Emma has been at the forefront of my mind for an interview since I heard her story through another podcast so I was thrilled when she said “yes let’s do it tomorrow” at EQUITANA when I asked her for an interview. Some people might take pity on people who are not fully able bodied, or have been through the kind of trauma Emma has. I personally have a reverence for them. Especially Emma, she is strong and capable and sits with intention and will not be seen anything other than an incredible athlete in her own right, because listeners, that’s exactly what she is.I hope you can hear how extraordinary she is and that you enjoy this interview as much as I did.To connect with Emma you can find her on her Website, Facebook, Instagram, TwitterYou can also see pictures from the day on the blog on my website www.comealongfortheride.com.au/emma-booth-para-equestrian
In this episode we wrap up the wonderful EQUITANA Australia VIP Super Ticket Holder events with Pedro Torres and Emma Booth.I have introduced Pedro in the 1stepisode of this series, so go back and have a listen to more about this Portuguese Working Equitation and Dressage star. Emma Booth is Australia and she is our international representative para equestrian. Emma is one person I’ve wanted to interview for a long time and I was lucky enough to do a full interview one on one with her at EQUITANA, it happened right before we recorded this VIP event. Emma’s solo interview will be up next week so tune in for that one.Emma rode in Pedro’s Masterclass at EQUITANA, it was so beautiful to watch. Pedro had a deep respect for Emma’s ability to ride and he also was as grateful as Emma was for the opportunity. So Emma was thrilled to be coached by Pedro and Pedro was thrilled to be able to watch Emma ride so close up in a Masterclass. You can hear the deep respect they have for each other. While at EQUITANA I also came across the team from Dolly’s dream. Following the tragic death of Northern Territory teenager Amy “Dolly” Everett on January 3, 2018, Tick and Kate Everett, Dolly’s parents, decided to establish Dolly’s Dream to create positive change and as a lasting legacy to their daughter, Amy. Who committed suicide after being bullied both in person and on the internet.I wanted to support the charity and buy a shirt to wear at EQUITANA, they had sold out of my size, so a Woman washed hers and brought it back for me the next day to wear to the VIP event. This is why you hear me ask the question about adversity.
