Points for the Food Pantry

Philipstown organization gets a triple boost Seamus Carroll and his wife, Marie Wieck, began shopping at Foodtown in Cold Spring when it opened in 2003 following a fire that had destroyed the previous supermarket at the location, the Grand Union. Like other customers, they started accumulating 10 points in Foodtown loyalty awards for every dollar spent. The points could be redeemed for grocery gift cards. Three months ago, the couple became the first Foodtown customers to reach 1 million points, according to the store manager, Mike Wilson. Carroll said they decided to push for 1 million in 2008, when they hit 100,000. "It became a family joke," he said, noting he would scold his daughters if they cashed in points to get discounts at the checkout. "I told them we were saving for 1 million; they laughed at that." When they hit the mark earlier this year, Carroll sent a photo of the receipt to his daughters, who live in England and China, respectively. They responded with smiley faces, he said. This week, Carroll and Wieck donated their points to the Philipstown Food Pantry, which operates on Saturday mornings at the First Presbyterian Church in Cold Spring. The pantry redeemed the points for $1,150 in Foodtown gift cards. The supermarket donated another $350 in cards for an even $1,500. "We thought this would be a way to leverage the gift cards, prompting others to donate," Carroll said. "It's a reminder that you can give points to the food pantry [at the customer service desk]; I'm sure people forget this option." The food pantry will receive another unexpected gift on Saturday (June 14) when Donna Anderson delivers a $1,017 donation from Philipstown Senior Citizens of Putnam County, which disbanded at the end of 2024. Food Insecurity Widespread Even amid wealth, many people struggle to make ends meet. An annual report by the United Way known as ALICE (for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) "is an alarm bell for what we see every Saturday" at the Philipstown Food Pantry, said Kiko Lattu, its coordinator. In May, the pantry provided food and other necessities to an average of 71 households each week. The United Way argues that the federal poverty level does not accurately reflect the number of people struggling financially to meet basic needs. Using census and other federal data, it calculated for its latest report, released in May, that 38 percent of Cold Spring/Philipstown and 35 percent of Garrison households don't earn enough to cover the costs of essentials such as housing, food, transportation, health care, child care and a basic phone plan. "Even more troubling, 51 percent of seniors and about two-thirds of single-parent households in Putnam County are likely struggling," Lattu said. In Putnam County, the United Way calculated that a single adult needs at least $54,180 annually to meet basic needs, or $135,660 for a family of two adults with two children in child care. In Beacon, the United Way calculated that 42 percent of the city's 8,367 households struggle to meet a basic survival budget for Dutchess County of $40,296 for a single adult with $114,996 for a family of two adults and two children in child care. By contrast, the federal poverty level is $14,580 for an individual and $30,000 for a family of four. Anderson, who served as president for the final two years, said the club was formed in 1974 and at one time had more than 100 members. But by last year, the remaining members voted to dissolve the club and donate its fund balance to the pantry because many seniors suffer from food insecurity. Anderson was a vocal advocate for establishing a county senior center at the redeveloped Butterfield Hospital site. After the Philipstown Friendship Center opened there in 2018, she said the need for a seniors' group diminished. On June 1, a Nelsonville family - Karen and Ryan Peters and their daughters, Callie and Sadie - set up a table outside Foodtown to solicit donations for the pantry. In less than three ho...

In this compelling episode of the Must Read Alaska Show, host Ben Carpenter welcomes Donna Anderson, a retired educator and the Kenai Chapter Chair for Moms for Liberty, to discuss the pressing issues facing Alaska's education system.   With over 30 years of involvement in the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District as a teacher, substitute, parent, and grandparent, Donna brings a wealth of firsthand experience to the conversation. She opens up about her decision to retire after 26 years of teaching, driven by frustration with inconsistent policies, questionable curriculum choices like Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA), and a growing disconnect between district leadership and classroom realities.   Now, as a leader in Moms for Liberty—a national organization dedicated to empowering parents and holding government accountable—Donna is channeling her passion into grassroots advocacy. She sheds light on overcrowded classrooms, controversial age-inappropriate content, and the district's failure to address teacher burnout or conduct exit interviews to understand why educators and families are leaving. From her regular presence at school board meetings to her role in launching a statewide legislative committee, Donna explains how Moms for Liberty is mobilizing concerned parents, grandparents, and even dads across Alaska's four chapters (Fairbanks, Mat-Su, Anchorage, and Kenai Peninsula) to demand transparency and better outcomes for students.   Listeners will gain insight into the challenges of curriculum rushed into implementation, the financial waste of unused materials, and the broader cultural and policy shifts needed to retain both students and teachers. Whether you're a parent, educator, or citizen seeking solutions, this episode offers a candid look at the state of public education and a roadmap for getting involved. Contact Donna at moms4libertykpen@gmail.com or 907-252-7207 to join the effort, or visit momsforliberty.org to connect with a chapter near you and “find your people.”

Boardroom Governance with Evan Epstein
Donna Anderson, Head of Corporate Governance at T. Rowe Price: "This Has Been A Very Surprising Proxy Season"

Boardroom Governance with Evan Epstein

Intro.(1:30) - Start of interview.(2:14) - Donna's "origin story": She grew up moving a lot since her dad was a Navy pilot. She attended Trinity University (started at 16). After college she worked as a newspaper reporter at a small daily in Washington State and then worked in the PR office for the State Department in Brussels. She later got an MBA at the University of Texas at Austin with the objective of becoming an investment analyst. After graduation she joined Dyer, Robertson & Lamme ('96-'98) in Houston as an equities analyst. She then joined Invesco ('98- ‘07) as director of equity research, including responsibility for voting the proxies. She joined T. Rowe Price ('07- Present) with a specialty in corporate governance.(6:34) - Her description of T. Rowe Price (NASDAQ:TROW), a global investment management firm with ~$1.59 Trillion of AUM. "This firm is virtually all active management (95%)." It's pure play asset management, deeply rooted in fundamental investment research. Corporate governance became more relevant around the time of the financial crisis (2007), so a decision was made to create a corporate governance specialty group.(10:42) -  How does T. Rowe Price think about its corporate governance function? "I think that our corporate governance approach is complementary to the passive investors." "We have a set of guidelines but nobody gets wedded to that, we approach each situation case-by-case." "This year brought so many exceptions, such as compensation during the pandemic." They look at every single vote. The proxy team is comprised of 3 people. They have a separate responsible investment team that covers ESG matters.(17:21) - On ESG and its impact on corporate governance: T. Rowe Price had 1,002 engagements with companies in 2020: 53% dealt with ESG matters. The job of the ESG folks is still centered around getting the information they need (disclosure of relevant data is still an issue with ESG). "We have a very disproportionately large footprint in small and mid cap companies, plus private companies, and they need a lot of coaching on ESG, DEI or corporate governance matters."(20:11) - On corporate governance of private companies (pre-IPO). We are early in the life-cycle of these companies so we can show them what are the corporate governance trade-offs (particularly from the shareholder side).(24:14) - Her take on dual-class share structures (enlightened by her role in the private investments valuation committee at T. Rowe Price). They plan to be long term investors, so they make sure that the companies that they have invested in understand the trade-offs involved in decisions such as having dual-class shares (for example, exclusions from S&P500 index if dual class shares don't expire). "It's reasonable to start with a classified board and graduate to an annually elected board later." On dual-class shares: "over time we have concluded based on years of experience that [the dual-class share structure] is not aligned with our interests... but...we are perfectly comfortable with a time-based sunset provision of 7 to 10 years." "This is a market where dual-class stock is accepted, so we think that a road-map idea and compromises like time-based sunset provisions are the right pragmatic solutions" "I think a lot of investors view that sunset provisions are the perfect compromise in this market, where there are not many alternatives."(29:39) - Her take on the current proxy season: "This was a very surprising year but I would not put [the Exxon proxy fight] on that bucket. Anyone that was surprised by that outcome was not playing close enough attention." "We don't see [the Exxon case] as a watershed event where investors will push E & S directors into boardrooms." "I think the conditions were very Exxon specific and that same fund with those same directors brought at any other company would have had a different outcome."(30:46) - On compensation issues in this proxy season. "We've been really surprised at how investors had their pitchforks out over companies that made comp changes in the heat of the moment in Q2 last year."(31:32) - On how some large shareholders flipped their views in favor of E&S shareholder proposals. "Those results were surprising to me and to a lot of companies."(32:31) - On the shareholder proposal process: "I think that shareholders have yet to reckon with the fact that the shareholder proposal process in this market has been taken over by non-shareholders [such as advocacy groups including E&S activist groups 'harnessing the power of shareholders' to foster social change]" "I think it's really questionable whether some of these activists actually want [companies such as] Amazon, Exxon, Chevron or Kroger to exist in 10 years." It's questionable whether these groups are aligned with shareholders interests.(34:04) - On companies arm twisting to bullying on vote outcomes this proxy season: "The Sunday night late calls that we've gotten, the votes put on hold for some time, this kind of thing is not allowed in other markets but it is allowed here. I thought this year they were particularly aggressive. I hope it's not a trend but I've been pretty alarmed by the lengths that the companies went through to engineer an outcome that is not real."(36:35) - On board diversity: "This is an area where the pace of progress is pretty surprising, and what it took to get there was shareholders coalescing around board diversity." T. Rowe Price wrote a letter to support the Nasdaq board diversity proposal. "Our take on board diversity is that [there must be a target], whether you want to call it a quota or not. If it's only aspirational guess what, the progress is very, very slow."(36:35) - On the Business Roundtable "purpose of the corporation" restatement (2019). "I don't put a lot of stock in it." See "The Illusory Promise of Stakeholder Capitalism" Bebchuk & Tallarita (2020). Also, if you talk to IR professionals, it's clear that shareholders are still a priority for companies.(43:58) - The books that have greatly influenced her life:Wuthering Heights (1847), by Emily Brontë.Seven Choices (2003), by Elizabeth Harper Neeld.Caste (2020), by Isabel Wilkerson.(45:47) - Her mentors:The editor at the newspaper where she worked post college that taught her how to write, in a week.Brian Rogers (former Chairman and CIO at T. Rowe Price).(47:21) - Her favorite quotes:"You can get so much farther with a kind word and a gun than with a kind word alone" by Al Capone."A man who carries a cat by the tail learns something he can learn no other way" by Mark Twain.(48:08) - Her "unusual habit": searching weird rocks!(59:04) - The living person she most admires: "women crushing it in a male dominated field" (ie Angela Merkel, Oprah, etc.) but she's fascinated by Mellody Hobson, co-CEO and President of Ariel Investments.Donna Anderson, the Head of Corporate Governance at T. Rowe Price (NASDAQ:TROW), a global investment management firm with ~$1.5 Trillion of AUM. Donna leads the policy-formation process for proxy voting, chairs the firm's Proxy Committee and leads the firm's engagement efforts with portfolio companies. She serves as a specialist for incorporating ESG considerations into the firm's investment-research process. In this episode I have gone back over the trainers that I have spoken to in each previous episode and found the Top 5 Horse Training Tips. What I love about these tips is that they all have a similar focus. These trainers are from varied disciplines and from all over the world, yet their foundations are similar, their naming of it may be a bit different, the way they do it may be slightly different, but the intention and end result are all very similar. They all work with calmness and taking your time to build a strong connection with their horse. Here are the links to the trainers that I speak of in the podcast.Mosie Trewhitt from Liberty HorsemanshipKirsty Hagger from Willowvale Spanish MustangsEmma Bryant from Equality Equine ServicesValence Williams from Soul Horse RevolutionMel Fleming from Connecting with Horses, Riding with SynchronicityAnna Blake from Relaxed and ForwardDonna Anderson from One Horse Life Australia and New ZealandTo let me know of your training questions you would like answered please connect with me on my website, or through Facebook, Twitter or InstagramThis episode was brought to you by EQUITANA Australia. In this episode you will hear from Donna Anderson from One Horse Life Australia. Donna is at the end of many years of learning and is at the beginning of her teaching journey with horses and people.Donna started her life with horses as a lot of people did by getting her first pony when she was young. Then there was the catalyst that changed her horse training for ever. When one of Donna’s horses died while she was in the UK visiting her Mum, she felt lost and unable to go on with horses for the time being. When Donna finally made a promise to the horse she lost that she would change the way she trained and make sure she was always kind and gentle with horses, the universe delivered her, with one last test of her word, a new horse.Donna found One Horse Life  with Anna Marciniak and spent years training online and then in person. This is the foundation of her training methods.Donna teaches connection with your horse and always giving your horse a voice. No matter your discipline or level of riding, Donna and her training can teach you to have the connection that you have always dreamed of.Like so many other trainers on this podcast series, it seems deep connection with your horse comes from deep self work, the horse is a mirror of your soul and seems to be here to teach us to let go of all that is holding us back.Donna has a great story to tell and is yet another brave and wonderful human who is here to listen to as much as she is to talk to her horses. To connect with Donna you can go to  her Facebook page.
